0:04 welcome to the American Institute of
0:06 healthc Care Professionals video on
0:08 Christian Counseling foundations and
0:11 this is an essential video for those who
0:14 are in SC 570 because Christian
0:18 Counseling has its own science in in
0:20 terms of helping people through
0:23 counseling but within Christian
0:26 Counseling itself there are a variety of
0:30 different views and ideas that will make
0:33 one Christian counselor totally
0:36 different than another particular
0:38 Christian counselor so one of the
0:39 biggest questions is is Christian
0:42 Counseling and biblical counseling the
0:45 same thing well I think it's best to say
0:48 that biblical counseling is a type of
0:51 Christian Counseling but in many ways we
0:53 see the words biblical counseling and
0:56 Christian Counseling utilized and
0:59 interchanged uh little too Loosely if
1:01 you really understand what Christian
1:03 Counseling is so there's many different
1:05 interpretations of how Christian
1:09 Counseling is utilized with science and
1:11 scripture when I say science I mean modern
1:12 modern
1:14 psychology so ultimately though all
1:16 forms of Christian cantly has some
1:19 emphasis on Christ in scripture and it
1:22 exists within the Christian ruled view
1:26 but the differences between them will
1:30 rely more on the extent of its reliance
1:33 on Modern psychology versus its Reliance
1:36 on scripture some will be more extreme
1:39 to one side others will be more extreme
1:42 to the others others will be more
1:44 professional in their ethical standards
1:46 in dealing in a secular field and not
1:48 wish to bring religion into the
1:53 discussion others may be uh more a
1:55 Biblical believing that scripture needs
2:00 to be in every counseling session itself
2:02 some might want to separate Faith
2:04 completely but still have an
2:08 understanding that it exists so these
2:12 extremes exist I think there is some
2:14 usefulness in many of the views that
2:16 we're going to look at in this brief
2:19 video but at the same time I think the
2:21 truth kind of lies in between the two
2:25 extremes and I think when you go to most
2:27 universities that have some type of
2:30 Christian counseling or types of uh
2:33 organizations or nonprofits or churches
2:35 that have Christian Counseling I think
2:38 you're going to find more that lie in
2:41 the middle but some might have a
2:45 particular me uh a particular betterment
2:48 for an individual in a different setting
2:51 also so Christian counseling while
2:54 espousing a Christian world worldview
2:58 can vary far more from secular to less
3:01 secular to spiritual to less spiritual
3:04 it can be held to a very high clinical
3:08 standard or it can be again to a higher
3:11 pastoral standard and how that is
3:14 reflected I think again depends on the
3:18 individual who is going for counseling
3:20 the counselor or Pastor who is
3:24 administering counseling and of course
3:27 the view itself what kind of view does
3:30 one have now depending on the Li ensure
3:32 the individual training certain
3:35 Christian counselors can deal deeper
3:38 within the science of psychology and say
3:42 a pastor could a pastor has limits so
3:43 there are clinical counselors who do
3:46 Christian Counseling and there are also
3:49 pastoral counselors who do Christian
3:51 Counseling but they are limited because
3:54 they are not list uh they are not
3:58 licensed now the views that we are going
4:02 to look at in involve five total the
4:05 first one is levels of
4:07 explanation we're going to also look at
4:10 the integrated approach we're going to
4:12 look at Christian
4:15 psychology we're going to look at
4:18 transformational approach and we're also
4:21 going to look at biblical counseling now
4:24 some of these are very closely similar
4:26 just with a little bit of differences
4:30 While others uh are very different in
4:33 their uh extreme of their approach one
4:35 approaching more of a secular uh
4:37 psychological standpoint and the other
4:40 just going to completely scripture so
4:43 what we're going to do is analyze these
4:45 so that in your Christian Counseling
4:49 Practice you can have a better idea of
4:53 how you want to approach uh your client
4:56 and also what you're able to do within
5:00 your licensing uh capability or
5:03 capacity so first let's look at biblical
5:04 counseling and believe it or not
5:07 biblical counseling is on the more
5:11 conservative uh side of uh the Spectrum
5:13 uh those who adhere to Pure biblical
5:15 counseling approach within Christian
5:18 Counseling are usually pastors most of
5:21 them are pastors and they are not
5:23 clinical uh professionals but they are
5:26 able to counsel at a particular level
5:29 with their uh with their flock with the
5:32 me MERS within their church and they
5:35 stick to more usually a Biblical
5:38 approach that uses scripture as its
5:40 primary source now a lot of the things
5:43 within this concept are very applicable
5:46 and also very true uh sin is seen as a
5:49 primary issue and of course we all know
5:52 that sin is the cause of the fall of
5:54 humanity if you are a Christian the sin
5:58 of Adam so sin is theoretically the
6:01 primary issue but in biblical counseling
6:04 it is more than just Theory it actually
6:08 is very much more physically present in
6:11 what is going on uh there is also a need
6:13 for a in biblical counseling a
6:15 reconnection with Christ it's a
6:18 spiritual moment where reconnecting with
6:22 Christ heals and of course that is very
6:25 important within all Christian Life it's
6:30 a it's a theological concept uh but that
6:32 is the primary goal to reunite with
6:35 Christ so that Christ can heal we are
6:37 looking for a spiritual healing which
6:41 will bring a mental healing the biblical
6:43 counselor in the strict sense of the
6:45 word believes that everything in the
6:47 Bible for counseling is
6:51 supplied and it is also less observant
6:54 hence on secular ideals and
6:57 psychological methods so does this
7:00 system work well for some it may for
7:02 those who are very very spiritual this
7:05 type of counseling could really connect
7:07 with their heart and trigger a necessary
7:10 change it correctly recognizes
7:13 Humanity's Fallen nature it recognizes
7:16 the role of vice and virtue in moral
7:20 theology which many uh modern Sciences
7:23 uh dismiss completely and it recognizes
7:24 the need of Grace and relationship with
7:27 Christ and those are essential in in
7:29 maintaining but it does has its
7:31 limitations because it cannot be used
7:33 outside the faith and is strictly a
7:35 secular venue because you have other
7:37 individuals with different religious and
7:40 spiritual beliefs it can also if not
7:43 done properly create a bias within the
7:46 counselor and the counsil
7:48 relationship what if a particular
7:51 individual starts to come to a counselor
7:54 and they have a different moral View and
7:57 this can create a bias in regards to how
8:00 the counselor perceiv
8:04 the particular uh counsil or client it
8:07 can also overuse scripture Beyond its
8:11 spiritual purpose replacing very
8:14 important modern therapies and ideas
8:17 within psychology just simply by trying
8:20 to find it with scripture I think one of
8:22 the main thing that other Christian
8:25 counselors would say is that scripture
8:29 is not a psychology manual it is not a
8:33 science book yes there is truth found in
8:35 some of it that lays the foundation but
8:38 you will find many Christian counselors
8:41 who see this particular approach to be
8:45 misusing scripture in some ways under
8:48 the levels of uh explanation though
8:51 which we'll be looking at very shortly
8:54 uh it does not put Faith secondhand it
8:58 puts Faith first but in putting Faith
9:00 first it does does
9:04 abandon uh most modern psychological
9:08 ideas now Christian psychology is
9:11 closely related to biblical counseling
9:15 but it does tend to uh touch base with
9:19 modern psychology to some extent but it
9:22 just doesn't limit its psychological
9:25 experience with the last 200 years since
9:27 the enlightenment it looks throughout
9:31 the entire history of the Christian
9:34 tradition and it looks to formulate a
9:37 unique psychology that is Christian in
9:40 itself that is found within the prism of
9:42 scripture and the Christian tradition to
9:45 study mental processes and behaviors
9:50 from that type of stamp so this
9:52 psychology uh and counseling definitely
9:54 does work for more religious
9:57 individuals it is though less integrated
10:00 with modern psychology uh SE wise and it
10:04 leans more on the spiritual it is
10:07 obviously more pastoral than clinical
10:10 because of its strong religious nature
10:12 but unlike biblical counseling it is
10:15 more open to utilizing psychological
10:18 methods with a very strong scriptural
10:21 emphasis again if an individual is very
10:23 spiritual this might have a very
10:27 profound effect so it is obviously
10:30 different than biblical uh but it is
10:32 still very far from what we would refer
10:35 to as levels of explanation which we
10:37 will be getting to shortly the
10:40 transformational approach I referenced
10:43 earlier is the other more leaning
10:47 towards scripture more overtly religious
10:50 uh push and it is probably a little bit
10:53 more so even than Christian
10:55 psychology it's a very spiritual
10:57 approach that looks to transform the
11:00 human person it is again much more
11:02 pastoral in nature you're not going to
11:04 see as many clinical counselors doing it
11:08 and it has a purely biblical approach it
11:10 looks well beyond the empirical method
11:13 but looks also at phenomenology and
11:16 phenomenology is how the object within
11:19 science experiences things how the human
11:22 experiences and phenomenology is a very
11:25 important opening of science because so
11:27 long before the object was studied
11:31 strictly as it within an a priori system
11:34 and every type of scientific approach
11:36 through empiricism based everything
11:39 under the same criteria however Human
11:41 Experience how things are understood and
11:45 felt is the lens of phenomenology and in
11:47 the transformational approach
11:50 phenomenology is taken into account much
11:52 more and I think this is a very good
11:56 element of the transformational approach
11:59 so again it's aimed more for Spirit
12:01 spiritual individuals it is a little bit
12:03 more suspicious of more modern
12:05 psychological methods and like the
12:08 biblical approach it strongly correlates
12:12 sin and mental pathology as the same and
12:15 it looks to uh utilize scripture to help
12:19 the individual transform and become more
12:22 holy and closer to Christ which is again
12:25 a very good
12:28 thing now the levels of explanation approach
12:30 approach
12:33 is the opposite and we'll get into uh
12:35 the integrative approach which
12:37 personally is the one I think most
12:39 mainstream Christians utilize in
12:41 Christian Counseling especially those
12:44 who are clinical but also some that
12:47 might be pastoral that have uh a strong
12:50 uh background in Psychology but the
12:53 levels of explanation
12:56 approach is the opposite of the first
12:58 three that we looked at uh it really
13:01 puts scripture second it separates
13:04 church and state so to speak it relies
13:09 more entirely completely on the ideas of
13:12 psychology and faith has to conform to
13:15 it the ideas so you're not going to have
13:17 as much of a religious experience
13:20 although uh the counselor probably is
13:22 Christian uh but they're definitely
13:25 probably also a clinical licensed
13:28 counselor and uh the idea of Christ is
13:33 important but there is less value in uh
13:35 the Christian tradition and the biblical
13:38 than the others it's present but it's
13:40 not nearly as present at such a
13:43 spiritual level so you have the two
13:45 Extremes in that regard one that focuses
13:48 more on scripture uh and a few other
13:52 degrees that Focus maybe a little bit on
13:55 uh psychology and then you have a system
13:58 that completely uh disregards most of
14:01 the scripture that is needed it's almost
14:04 secular but it isn't completely the
14:06 integrative approach is the approach
14:07 that most mainstream Christian
14:12 counselors will utilize it is a balance
14:16 of biblical counseling and uh levels of
14:19 explanation it is done by pastors but
14:22 more so clinical counselors because they
14:26 usually incorporate various uh modules
14:29 of healing that are based off modern
14:31 psychology so the integrative approach
14:34 exists within the Christian world view
14:36 it does not
14:39 make spiritual life and the Bible
14:41 secondary to psychology but it will
14:45 utilize modern psychology now scripture
14:49 is the starting point but scripture is
14:51 not seen as a psychology
14:54 textbook Christ is seen as the ultimate
14:57 counselor but modern therapies are
15:02 necessary to help with treating various
15:09 pathologies so in that is sin seen as uh
15:13 a as part of the problem absolutely uh
15:15 the integrative approach would not
15:18 dismiss s sin as a reason for Illness
15:21 but it does not attribute a direct
15:23 correlation with it in the moment with
15:27 every pathology so sin is the general
15:31 problem but when we're facing depression
15:33 or something we're acknowledging ver
15:35 importance of virtue and vice but we're
15:37 also looking clinically and we're using
15:40 scripture as a starting point maybe
15:42 referring to the fact that Christ did
15:45 wept that Christ did console but then we
15:49 would in we would enter into a uh very
15:51 much a grief counseling session that
15:54 would have a variety of dual process
15:58 models Elizabeth kuer Ross looking at
16:01 grief trajectory iies so it would be
16:04 integrated by the name of the approach
16:07 itself very well uh I think those with a
16:09 religious mindset but also a clinical
16:12 mindset it would really work as the two
16:15 systems are approached uh unlike the
16:18 levels of explanation scripture is never
16:21 put second but is a strong starting
16:25 point and it also sees uh the importance
16:27 of Christian values to help individuals
16:30 heal from mental pathology ology but
16:33 within the guidance of psychology itself
16:38 so there we have a summary of Christian
16:40 Counseling but within Christian
16:43 Counseling five different schools of
16:46 thought I think a lot of them have
16:49 attributes that are extremely important
16:51 that can be Blended but you will have
16:55 some who are more pastorally
16:57 conservative that uh might even be
16:59 pastors themselves
17:02 uh that will just consider biblical
17:05 counseling the only way and every way
17:07 then you might have some uh Christians
17:10 who are a little bit more
17:13 liberal and they might put that more
17:15 second in their counseling to a
17:19 completely psychological look and I'm
17:22 not really if you want my opinion as an
17:23 instructor of many of these courses I'm
17:26 not really a fan of either
17:29 extreme I fall with I would say into the
17:32 integrated approach where biblical
17:34 counseling is a starting point but we
17:37 use those concepts of the Christian
17:41 worldview in concert with psychology
17:43 which is a different science than
17:46 Theology and try to find healing through
17:48 that the other approaches of
17:52 transformational approach or Christian
17:54 psychology are a little bit further to
17:56 the right than this because it
18:00 emphasizes more so scripture than the
18:03 science and the psychology so it really
18:07 then comes down to the individual what
18:09 helps the individual in counseling
18:11 better if they're looking for a
18:15 religious spiritual counseling uh
18:17 approach that can help them heal from
18:20 whatever trauma that they are facing so
18:22 I hope this helps a little bit uh I
18:25 recommend looking into uh these
18:26 approaches they can be found anywhere
18:29 online and you can learn a lot thought
18:32 about this uh I'm sure many individuals
18:35 whove just began this course or are also
18:37 just looking at the this video about
18:39 Christian Counseling are probably
18:42 surprised that there's even differences
18:43 within Christian Counseling and they
18:45 probably thought it was just one thing
18:47 or they thought it was Christian and
18:50 biblical the same thing so I hope this
18:53 video helps clarify some of these things
18:55 in some of these different views and
