1:40 thousands of years to the stone age
1:43 this was when the first people lived in britain

1:47 they are often referred to as
1:50 hunter-gatherers because they did
1:54 exactly that they hunted and gathered
1:56 they hunted the animals and they
2:06 at this time britain was still connected
2:07 to the continent
2:10 there was a narrow strip of land
2:13 so people were able to come and go as
2:15 they pleased
2:18 often following the animals they were hunting
2:24 about 10 000 years ago britain became
2:28 separated from the continent by rising
2:32 sea levels and it has remained an island
2:39 around 6 000 years ago the first farmers
2:43 arrived in britain from the continent
2:47 they introduced a new way of life
2:51 they built houses and many monuments
2:54 one of the most famous
3:01 stonehenge is situated on salisbury
3:04 plain in the county of wiltshire it is a
3:09 large man-made circle of standing stones
3:12 it is thought that work started on this
3:18 magnificent structure around 4 000 years ago
3:24 nowadays there are many special
3:26 gatherings at stonehenge
3:30 such as for the winter and summer solstices
3:36 it was around this time four thousand
3:37 years ago
3:40 that people learnt to make bronze
3:41 and so
3:43 the bronze age began
3:46 the people who lived during this period
3:50 became incredibly talented at metalwork
3:53 and created beautiful objects in both
3:55 bronze and gold
4:02 many of these items often tools and
4:06 ornaments can be found in museums across
4:07 the country
4:14 the bronze age lasted about 2 000 years
4:17 the iron age followed the bronze age
4:20 this was when people learned to make
4:24 weapons tools and other instruments out of

4:32 the use of iron helped people to make
4:34 better tools for farming
4:37 the new iron tools and weapons were
4:41 stronger than the previous stone and

4:59 they chose to live there so they could

5:06 and could get prepared if they suspected
