0:33 I Paul say to you that if you are
0:36 circumcised that is if you yield to the
0:39 false teachers who are telling you that
0:43 you must uh keep the law of circumcision
0:45 in order to be
0:48 justified Christ will be of no advantage to
0:54 you I testify again to every man who is
0:56 being circumcised that he is a debtor to
0:58 keep the whole
1:01 law you are Ed from Christ you who would
1:04 be justified by the
1:07 law you have fallen from
1:11 grace for through the Spirit by
1:15 faith we ourselves eagerly wait for the
1:16 hope of
1:18 righteousness for in Christ Jesus
1:21 neither circumcision nor uncircumcision
1:22 counts for
1:25 anything but only
1:28 Faith working through
1:31 love oh
1:36 Father we want to live in this Freedom
1:42 we want to stand firm and not submit to
1:46 a yoke of slavery so Grant I pray that
1:48 we would both understand what Paul's
1:51 talking about here and that we would
1:54 experience this kind of freedom for the
1:56 glory of Christ for the good of our own
1:59 souls for the advancement of his cause

2:16 freedom is called the the
2:20 goal of being set
2:23 free so he's got these two stages this is
2:24 is
2:27 conversion I presume we would all
2:32 agree and then this is ongoing life of
2:34 freedom in
2:37 Christ or as he says here

2:45 conversion is to be
2:48 maintained by standing
2:53 firm stand firm in this Freedom right
2:57 stand firm don't here's the that's the
3:00 positive the negative is don't
3:04 W submit again to yoke of
3:07 slavery so stand in this
3:11 freedom and don't go back see that word
3:14 again submit again to the Yoke of
3:16 slavery now what I want to do mainly in
3:19 this session is just use this
3:23 structure of an event that happens
3:26 followed by a life of maintained Freedom
3:30 or a warning that we are to stand firm
3:34 in that freedom and not go backward to
3:36 the slavery from which we have been
3:38 rescued and I want to take that
3:40 structure and show you that's been the
3:43 case all the way through this letter
3:45 this is just by way of review but it
3:48 helps me and I thought it might help you
3:50 as well so let's just go back and walk
3:53 through the letter where this structure
3:57 of starting well and going
4:00 bad is uh focused on so here's chapter
4:03 1: 6 I'm
4:05 astonished that you are so quickly
4:10 deserting him who called you in the
4:12 grace of Christ and are turning to a
4:14 different gospel so you see they were
4:16 going well now they've turned
4:20 back that's the problem in this letter
4:23 it looks as if he's not sure he's
4:26 perplexed about them that they are
4:28 abandoning the gospel in which they'
4:30 made such a good beginning here's
4:33 chapter 2 veres 4 and 5 because of false
4:37 Brethren secretly brought in who slipped
4:39 in to spy out our freedom so Paul had
4:43 gone up to Jerusalem with Titus a
4:45 gentile and he didn't have Titus
4:48 circumcised so they're going to Snoop in
4:50 there to see whether or not he had
4:53 obeyed the law and had Titus circumcised
4:56 he came in to to spy out our freedom
4:59 that we have in Christ namely we're not
5:02 under the law as a means of
5:05 justification so that they might bring
5:08 us into slavery in other words turn us
5:09 back we were we're walking in our
5:12 freedom and they want to take us back to
5:15 slavery under lawkeepers a way of
5:18 justification to them we did not yield
5:21 that's the same as saying stand firm
5:24 don't do this don't go back don't do
5:27 what they are trying to make you do do
5:28 we did not
5:31 yield in submission even for a moment so
5:34 that the truth of the Gospel might be
5:39 preserved for you or here's chapter 2:

5:48 Peter was eating with the Gentiles in
5:52 other words he was standing firm in
5:55 Liberty he was a Jew and yet he had the
5:59 freedom to go against the Customs that
6:01 were expected from Jews as good
6:03 lawkeepers and he was eating whatever
6:07 they put before him kosher or unkosher
6:11 but when they came he drew back he was
6:13 going this way standing in Freedom and
6:16 then he started to forsake his freedom
6:18 he drew back and separated himself
6:22 fearing the circumcision party so again
6:25 he didn't stand firm he had been set
6:27 free it seems but he wasn't living in
6:31 the freedom that Christ called him to he
6:35 was submitting again to a yoke of of
6:39 slavery here's Galatians 3 oh foolish
6:42 Galatians who has Bewitched
6:46 you it was before your eyes that Christ
6:47 Jesus or Jesus Christ was publicly
6:50 portrayed as crucified let me ask you
6:52 only this did you receive the Spirit by
6:54 works of
7:00 law no or by hearing of Faith yes faith
7:03 not works of law are you so foolish
7:06 having begun by the spirit are you now
7:09 being perfected are you Ending by the
7:12 Flesh in other words did you experience
7:16 this event of Glorious Liberation in
7:18 being converted through justification by
7:21 faith and now you are ready to throw
7:24 away this Freedom you're not standing
7:27 firm at least he's asking are you he's
7:30 not sure where they are are you going to
7:32 go back and submit again to a yoke of
7:38 slavery here chapter 4 verse 9 but now
7:40 that you have come to know
7:45 God or rather be known by God how can
7:49 you turn back there it is again they're
7:53 so they're going well walking in Freedom
7:56 and now the false teachers have somehow
7:58 Bewitched them so that they're turning
8:01 back to the weak and worthless
8:03 Elementary principles of the world and
8:05 remember we talked about these is
8:10 probably the a b c's of the law
8:14 basic circumcision Feast keeping you've
8:17 turned back because they persuaded you
8:20 that you can't be a Bonafide Christian
8:25 unless you follow these rules whose
8:30 slaves you want to be once more
8:33 then maybe one more Galatians
8:38 5:7 you were running well they were
8:41 running who hindered you from obeying
8:44 the truth so now you're starting to go
8:47 back so throughout this entire
8:51 letter the issue is not mainly how did
8:55 you get started they had embraced Paul's
8:56 Gospel of
9:01 justification not by law
9:02 but by
9:05 faith for in Christ Jesus neither
9:07 circumcision nor uncircumcision counts
9:11 for anything but only
9:15 Faith working through love Faith was the
9:17 means by which you were set
9:22 free and now you're not standing firm it
9:26 appears you are turning back again and
9:29 submitting to a yoke of slavery name
9:31 they have
9:34 evidently Bewitched you into thinking
9:37 that you really don't have a perfect
9:41 pure glorious standing with Christ by
9:46 faith and must become justified by lawke
9:51 keeping so that's the big issue in
9:53 Galatians and now the big question for
9:57 us next time becomes what's the nature
