0:08 hi my name is Freddy Wilkins I'm a ply
0:10 qualified British ski instructor based
0:12 in the three valleys in the French alpes
0:14 today we're going to look at my top tips
0:16 for your first day [Music]
0:22 skiing the first thing we're going to
0:24 look at is clothing most people use a
0:26 three layer system you want some sort of
0:29 thermal base layer uh normally a
0:31 synthetic or a Marino fabric personally
0:34 I prefer Marino you want to avoid cotton
0:36 cotton gets cold when wet and it stays
0:37 cold it will keep you cold on the
0:39 mountain then you want some sort of mid
0:41 layer usually a type of fleece or puffer
0:43 jacket is good for your third and final
0:46 layer you want some sort of good quality
0:48 waterproof ski jacket these cover lots
0:50 of different uh shapes and sizes and
0:52 variations either insulated or just an
0:54 outer shell with gloves you want
0:57 something nice and waterproof and warm
0:59 and if you struggle with the cold
1:01 mittens Always warm warmer than gloves
1:02 you also want some decent quality
1:05 waterproof ski cipet only parisians wear
1:07 jeans although it's not a legal
1:09 requirement it's a really good idea to
1:11 wear a helmet to stay safe if you don't
1:13 have your own you can usually rent these
1:15 from where you get your skis and boots
1:16 one item of clothing people tend to
1:18 forget it's some sort of snood or buff
1:20 this is really useful when it's cold or
1:23 windy to keep your face nice and warm
1:25 personally I really like the air hole
1:26 Buffs because you can tuck them into
1:28 your goggles and they don't steam up
1:30 they're also great for rubbing a [Music]
1:34 [Music]
1:35 probably the most important piece of
1:37 equipment you're going to wear are your
1:39 boots we have a video explaining on how
1:41 to put them on and get them fitted just
1:43 here the only thing you want to have in
1:45 your ski boots are your ski socks make
1:46 sure you don't have any thermals in
1:48 there personally I like to get 3/4
1:50 length thermals um so they don't go on
1:52 my boots if you do have full length
1:54 thermals you can always just roll them
1:56 up make sure the elastic strap doesn't
1:58 go in your boot it goes on the outside
2:04 [Music]
2:06 out next we're going to look at how to
2:08 carry our skis firstly put one of the
2:10 skis on the bottom doesn't matter which
2:12 they're symmetrical then the other one
2:15 goes on top make sure you pick up the
2:17 toe piece of the ski on the bottom and
2:19 then you can do this if you pick up the
2:22 one on the top this will happen Okay
2:25 once I picked it up I want it in a
2:28 position so I can swing it like that
2:29 that means I can walk around with it
2:31 that means I can rest my arm also if I'm
2:33 in a lift kebe if you've got longer to
2:35 walk the best way to carry our skis is
2:37 over our shoulder to start with put your
2:39 poles in the snow so you can use two
2:42 hands for your skis to the side you can
2:45 create them like this with two hands up
2:46 over on the shoulder and the most
2:49 important thing is to keep our hands
2:52 forwards at the front put the bottom ski
2:55 here on the top and that way it won't
2:58 move if it's the other way around quite
3:01 often this can happen happen which is
3:04 annoying okay if it does you can always
3:11 over before we start skiing you want to
3:12 make sure that you're skiing in the
3:14 right areas for your first day you want
3:18 to find somewhere as flat as possible in
3:21 North America and France green slopes
3:23 will be the easiest other European
3:25 countries blue slopes will be the lowest
3:27 level you want to find a beginner's area
3:29 ideally somewhere next to a magic carpet
3:31 will probably be the best place another
3:33 top tip is you don't necessarily need to
3:36 buy a full ski pass on your first day
3:38 there's lots of beginner areas that are
3:40 free normally next to magic carpets
3:42 check out the lift pass options in your
3:44 area in corser for example you can get
3:46 the mini pass for the day which is much
3:48 cheaper and gives you access to most of
3:55 ones when putting on our skis we always
3:57 want to start by putting the downhill
3:59 ski on first if it's a bit snowy like it
4:01 is today I always like to get the snow
4:03 off just by tapping on the front binding
4:07 you can alternatively hit the bottom of
4:09 your boots with your pole okay make sure
4:12 it's in find the bottom of the heel in
4:14 the middle push down make sure you hear
4:16 that click once you hear that click you
4:17 know it's on correctly if you don't hear
4:19 the click it could come off while you're
4:21 skiing let's just practice this with the
4:22 one ski first let's have a look at
4:25 taking it off okay make sure we get the
4:28 tip right in the bottom of that trough
4:30 and push down and lift stuff at the same
4:32 time now our ski is [Music]
4:35 [Music]
4:37 off it's always a good idea to put on
4:39 our pole straps if you don't have the
4:41 straps on and you fall over you might
4:43 have to walk a long way back up the
4:44 mountain to go and get them if you hold
4:46 your straps like this by putting your
4:48 hand down and then holding on that can
4:51 actually be dangerous cuz if you fall it
4:53 can pull on your thumb like that and you
4:53 can inj
4:57 yourself ah my thumb the best way hand
4:59 up like that open the thumb and finger
5:01 over the top top super strong and stable
5:03 grip in this position if I fall it's
5:12 safe now we've sorted out all of the
5:15 admin let's finally start skiing we'll
5:17 start by clipping in one ski start on
5:19 one ski and let's just have a little
5:21 walk around okay walk around on one ski
5:23 see how it feels see if you can keep
5:26 your weight in the front of your boot
5:28 bending down squishing into the front
5:30 Okay you always use the front of your
5:32 boot to support yourself have a little
5:36 walk around see how it feels you'll feel
5:38 that it's slippery and slidy we're
5:40 getting used to this sensation keeping
5:43 our weight forwards try and slide along
5:45 and eventually once you're comfortable
5:47 see if you can put a small slope putting
5:49 your ski down the mountain and see if
5:52 you can just balance on one ski use the
5:53 front of your boot we don't want to use
5:56 the back of our boot ever once you've
5:58 skied around on one ski for a while
6:01 let's take it off and swap it over skis
6:05 are symmetrical so you can put any ski
6:06 on any foot
6:08 foot
6:18 feet once we're happy sliding around on
6:20 one ski let's put both skis on it's
6:22 always good to use our poles to help so
6:25 we got three points of contact clip in
6:27 generally on the first day our poles
6:29 kind of get in the way we want to just
6:31 be focusing on what our skis are doing
6:33 so for this next step let's leave our
6:34 poles at the bottom or if you have to
6:36 take them with you or we need to hold
6:37 them in the middle once we've got two
6:40 skis on we can start walking around have
6:42 a feel of what it's like keeping your
6:45 balance see how it feels keep your
6:47 weight in the front of the boot you'll
6:49 find if you want to go uphill you start
6:51 walking it's not going to happen there's
6:54 two ways you can walk uphill okay let's
6:57 get a duct foot shape we're use your
7:01 edges to go up okay okay all the way on
7:03 one foot all the way on the other foot
7:06 like this and doing this you can get up
7:08 pretty much
7:10 everything okay once it gets a bit
7:12 steeper we can have a little look at
7:17 side stepping okay to side step we want
7:21 all of our weight on the downhill all of
7:23 our weight on the other leg okay a
7:26 really common mistake people make is
7:28 they they can't seem to walk up fully
7:31 load that leg and then you'll be able to
7:33 go up sideways all the way on this leg
7:37 using this Edge get those edges in small
7:40 steps once we found a a nice small
7:42 little slope like this with a nice flat
7:45 runoff we can do our first little slide
7:48 okay we want to be in a nice forwards
7:49 position bending our knees always into
7:51 the front of our boot okay straight back
7:54 weight forwards okay and we're going to
7:58 make small steps to turn okay stay
8:00 balanced bending into the front of the
8:04 boots and stay parallel and let the
8:06 terrain slow you down first bit of skiing
8:08 skiing [Music]
8:12 [Music]
8:14 fantastic the next part of our video and
8:17 arguably the most important we want to
8:19 know how to stop we're going to start by
8:20 doing a
8:23 snowplow we want to open our legs out
8:26 into a triangle and resist against these
8:28 two inside edges that's what's going to
8:29 be stopping us
8:32 okay pushing against those two edges
8:34 creating that resistance The Wider the
8:35 snow plow the more resistance you're
8:38 going to have I'm pushing my legs away
8:40 from me opening them up and at the same
8:42 time I'm pointing my toes together
8:44 keeping my tips pointing towards each
8:46 other it's good to get this movement
8:48 pattern and practice it a few times
8:51 before we actually do it on a slope just
8:54 practicing pushing those legs away so
8:55 once we've got used to that movement
8:57 pattern on the flat let's take it onto a
8:59 small slope okay
9:01 so Point our skis down the mountain
9:03 parallel to start with and then open
9:06 them up symmetrically resisting against
9:08 those two inside edges and that's how we
9:10 stop simple as that once you're
9:12 comfortable stopping just using your
9:15 skis for our poles we want them in front
9:17 of us like this with the tips of our
9:20 poles behind us okay if you hold your
9:21 poles like this we don't want to be
9:24 doing that if you fall boom you could inj
9:36 if you do fall over make sure you get
9:39 your skis below you okay so in this
9:42 position for example or this position
9:44 put your feet in the air it always helps
9:47 if you line on your back okay get them
9:49 below you if you try and get up in this
9:51 position you're going to slide forwards
9:54 if you try and get up in this position
9:56 you want to slide backwards make sure
10:00 your skis are 90° perpendicular to the
10:03 slope keep your hands forwards try and
10:06 get as small as possible okay and then
10:08 we can stand back up again if it's
10:10 really flat it's actually harder to get
10:12 up when it's flat if you can't get up
10:18 just take off the uphill ski like this
10:22 okay and then you can put it back on if
10:25 your downhill ski has fallen off okay
10:27 don't try and put the downhill ski on
10:29 like this okay it just goes away from
10:32 you pick up your ski okay come around
10:34 like this now I've got my downhill ski
10:37 on it's going to be way easier to put my ski
10:38 ski
10:41 on one final and really important thing
10:44 to consider if you fall is often your
10:46 binding might be up like this no matter
10:49 how hard you try and put the ski on it
10:51 won't go
10:53 in you just put that down and you're
10:55 good to go so make
10:59 sure the binding is always down
