0:12 broken glitches you've ever seen portal
0:14 can be beaten in just about an hour
0:16 without the game's titular feature
0:20 well actually you do still need portals
0:22 the run is technically zero portals no
0:24 passing through portals so we don't
0:26 shoot any portals or travel through any
0:29 portals the game places for us but we do
0:31 still use the portals and we'll get to
0:33 that in a bit
0:35 since the game's release leased portals
0:37 has always been a point of discussion
0:40 for portal enthusiasts it begs the
0:41 question of how efficient you can be
0:43 with your portal placement to solve the
0:45 puzzle in the least amount of portal
0:48 shots or in some cases how creative you
0:50 can be to solve puzzles without portals
0:53 altogether it kind of goes side by side
0:55 with glitch hunting and speed running as
0:57 people really try to push the boundaries
0:59 of what is possible within the game and
1:01 the developers essentially recommend the
1:04 player to attempt least portals runs as
1:06 after beating some of the main levels
1:08 you unlock the challenge maps where the
1:10 game challenges you to beat the dual
1:12 portal chambers in the least amount of
1:16 time steps or of course portals
1:18 within the challenge maps there are
1:20 recommended amounts of portal shots for
1:23 bronze silver and gold completions some
1:25 of these are pretty cool like in chamber
1:28 14 where with a clever fling you can
1:30 solve the chamber in just two portals
1:34 however on other levels like chamber 15
1:37 the gold completion is an outrageous 14 portals
1:38 portals
1:40 but of course speedrunners and glitch
1:42 hunters can solve the puzzle with much
1:45 less instead of using portals physics
1:47 objects can be used to complete the chambers
1:48 chambers
1:50 more specifically there are some
1:52 glitches with physics objects that are
1:53 quite overpowered
1:55 prop flying is a glitch originally seen
1:58 in half-life 2 where by mashing grab and
2:00 jump the player can repeatedly jump off
2:03 of a physics object and essentially fly
2:05 being able to reach almost anywhere on
2:06 the map
2:08 however prop flying is patched in the
2:11 version of source that portal is on as
2:13 valve changed prop mechanics so that
2:15 physics objects are at a fixed distance
2:17 from the player when they are picked up
2:19 so that when the player tries to jump
2:21 the object will be too far in front of them
2:22 them
2:24 but there is still a variant of the
2:26 glitch that we can do in portal because
2:29 if you perform a prop climb against a wall
2:29 wall
2:31 the wall pushes the prop below the
2:33 player in such a way that you can jump
2:34 off of it
2:37 this is called a wall climb and using
2:39 this glitch you can scale basically any
2:42 wall in the game all it takes is a
2:45 physics object like a radio cube wall
2:48 camera or turret and a lot of mashing on
2:50 the grab and jump buttons
2:52 this glitch can completely break some
2:55 chambers like 17 and 18 where you can
2:57 pretty easily solve these chambers
2:59 without portals by just wall climbing
3:01 over any obstacles
3:04 wall climbing is by far the most broken
3:06 glitch for leased portals but there are
3:08 still some other glitches that can help us
3:08 us
3:12 accelerated backwards hopping or abhing
3:13 is the standard movement glitch in
3:16 portal whereby repeatedly jumping
3:18 backwards we can exploit a faulty speed
3:21 cap to exponentially gain speed we can
3:24 use abhi to cross most horizontal gaps
3:26 in the game like the one at the start of
3:29 chamber 18 and in chamber 3.
3:31 accelerated backwards hopping can also
3:34 single-handedly solve chamber 8 without
3:36 any portals by performing a trick titled
3:38 abh over goo
3:40 but there's one trick that trumps them
3:42 all that basically allows for any
3:45 chamber to be solved in only two portals
3:47 and that's the save glitch and camera fly
3:48 fly
3:50 the save glitch is one of portal's most
3:53 broken glitches by saving and loading
3:55 the game while stuck in the edge of a
3:57 portal the player can maintain a portal
4:00 collision state it's quite complicated
4:02 and there are many side effects to it
4:03 but all you need to know for at least
4:06 portals is that while save glitched most
4:08 surfaces in the game that aren't next to
4:11 a portal become non-solid such that the
4:13 player can just walk through walls and
4:15 fall out of bounds
4:17 then there's the camera fly glitch which
4:19 utilizes faulty collision with the wall
4:21 mounted cameras
4:23 by detaching a camera on the wall and
4:25 jumping on it in a certain way you can
4:28 gain a ton of speed like a stupid amount
4:30 of speed you can use this to basically
4:33 fly through an entire level by combining
4:35 this with the safe glitch you can fly
4:37 through walls and ceilings to
4:38 essentially go from the start of the
4:41 level to the end of the level almost
4:43 instantly manipulating the speed from
4:46 the camera fly is incredibly challenging
4:48 so this strategy is only used when necessary
4:49 necessary
4:52 but with just two portals you can detach
4:54 a camera from the wall and activate the
4:57 safe glitch making basically every level
5:00 in portal solvable in just two portals
5:03 combining a lot of these glitches and a
5:06 couple more small ones glitch hunters
5:07 pretty quickly figured out that you
5:10 could beat all of portal with just 15 portals
5:11 portals
5:13 the portals in the least portals run
5:16 looked a little something like this
5:18 one portal was used as a seamshot in
5:20 chambers 4 and 5 which is basically
5:22 shooting the super small space between
5:25 two walls one portal in chamber six to
5:27 solve the puzzle
5:29 another portal in chamber 10 to get up
5:31 to the main part of the level
5:33 one in chambers 11 and 12 to get the
5:34 safe glitch
5:37 2 in chamber 15 to do the safe glitch
5:39 and camera fly combo
5:42 2 in chamber 16 to get past the great at
5:43 the end of the level
5:46 2 in chamber 19 to do the safe glitch
5:48 and camouflage combo
5:50 2 and escape 0 to get past the fence
5:52 near the end of the level
5:56 2 in escape 01 to get past the vent
5:58 and in escape 02 one portal is preserved
6:01 from the previous map so you only need
6:03 one portal to get past the great at the
6:04 start of the level
6:07 and that's it it was thought that 15
6:09 portals was the game's limit
6:12 in 2016 a group of speed runners made a
6:14 segmented speed run of the lease portals
6:16 route which beat the game with 15
6:19 portals in under 15 minutes
6:21 it had a ton of cool strats like in
6:24 escape 02 where a turret is used as a
6:26 ramp to do an accelerated backwards hop
6:27 off of
6:29 it's a super impressive run
6:32 but let's face it it's not the reason
6:35 you clicked on this video so how exactly
6:37 do you improve upon this and beat portal
6:40 without shooting any portals
6:52 it's one of the more broken glitches in
6:54 the game that completely breaks the
6:56 physics objects
6:58 despite the name the glitch actually has
7:00 nothing to do with the normal save
7:02 glitch but rather a really weird
7:04 interaction between portals and physics
7:07 objects can impose a safe witch-like
7:09 state onto the props causing them to
7:12 float around skid on the floor pass
7:14 through walls out of bounds and
7:16 essentially defy all known laws of physics
7:17 physics
7:19 activating the item save glitch is
7:22 really hard and somewhat random too but
7:25 once it's activated the glitch is so
7:27 powerful that it persists between playthroughs
7:28 playthroughs
7:30 the only way to turn off the item save
7:33 glitch is by restarting portal in its entirety
7:34 entirety
7:36 for a while isg became one of the
7:39 biggest gag glitches in portal something
7:41 that wasn't incredibly useful but was
7:44 really funny to show off at one point
7:47 runners started realizing how isg could
7:50 be used for leased portals in just about
7:52 every chamber in the game there's an
7:53 emancipation grill at the end of the
7:55 level which will fizzle any physics
7:57 object the player tries to preserve from
8:00 the previous test however with the item
8:02 save glitch you can push an item out of bounds
8:03 bounds
8:05 around the fizzler and then bring it
8:08 back inbounds effectively allowing you
8:10 to circumvent the emancipation grille
8:12 and preserve physics objects between
8:14 chambers which is pretty powerful
8:16 combined with all of our physics object
8:20 glitches in 2014 user margin 67 showed
8:22 off an alternative leased portal strat
8:25 for chambers 4 and 5 that only used one
8:27 portal to get the item save glitch
8:30 margin preserved a cube from chamber 4
8:32 into chamber 5 and then after restarting
8:34 their game to cancel the item safe
8:37 glitch they were able to solve chamber 5
8:40 in xero portals by using the extra cube
8:42 but it would take another discovery for
8:44 the item save glitch to find its true
8:46 potential and that being an older patch
8:49 of the game you see on most modern
8:51 versions of portal the player will get
8:53 stuck in out of bound space unless they
8:56 are in close proximity to a portal
8:59 however on version 3420 this is not the
9:01 case as the player can freely move out
9:04 of bounds this is huge because there
9:06 really aren't any obstacles out of
9:08 bounds so if we can move around freely
9:10 it's really easy to just get to the end
9:12 of the level without using any portals
9:15 the item save glitch also easily allowed
9:17 players to clip out of bounds by
9:19 stuffing a prop into the player and
9:21 saving and loading you can effortlessly
9:23 clip through the ground
9:25 in fact with the item safe glitch in
9:28 version 3420 of portal the game was so
9:30 broken that there was essentially one
9:32 technique that could solve every single
9:35 level in the game with zero portals it
9:37 went a little something like this
9:39 get item save glitch
9:41 using item save glitch get a physics
9:43 object stuck inside of you
9:46 then save and load to get both yourself
9:48 and your prop out of bounds
9:50 once out of bounds make a save and then
9:52 restart the game to cancel the item save glitch
9:54 glitch
9:56 then reload your save and using your
9:59 prop wall climb to the top of the level
10:01 now you can navigate through the level
10:04 fairly easily out of bounds and once you
10:06 reach the end you can clip back into the
10:08 level by saving and loading and then by
10:10 loading a previous save to reactivate
10:12 item save glitch you can bring your prop
10:15 back inbounds this strategy is quite
10:17 silly as it basically circumvents
10:20 solving the puzzles altogether and just
10:22 abuses source engine witchcraft to get
10:25 to the end of the levels the zero portal
10:27 run would truly become possible in
10:31 january of 2021 when a runner named
10:33 uncrafted name would find an item save
10:36 glitch setup inside of the vault right
10:37 at the start of the game
10:39 it involved placing the radio in a very
10:42 precise way so that the radio's hitbox
10:44 clips into the floor a little bit
10:46 then you could move the clipboard around
10:48 inside the radio until the game entered
10:50 an item save glitch state
10:52 dinos would be the first one to tackle
10:55 the zero portal run as he started
10:58 labbing out some strats in 2021 but
11:01 would finally attempt the run in 2022
11:04 funnily enough dinos used the speedrun
11:06 strats for the first two chambers which
11:08 uses a glitchy radio launch instead of
11:10 solving the puzzle which uses zero
11:12 portals anyways
11:14 since the speedrun strat doesn't travel
11:16 through any of the portals the run is
11:19 simultaneously a zero portals run and a
11:22 no passing through portals run
11:24 but we do still need portals to beat the
11:26 game as the vault portals are still
11:28 required to get save glitch and item
11:29 save glitch
11:32 before doing the speed run strat dino
11:34 sets up the item save glitch in the
11:36 vault and crucially makes a quick save
11:39 right after setting up the radio
11:41 dinos will come back to the save many
11:44 many times in the run as it basically
11:46 lets him trigger the item save glitch
11:49 whenever necessary dinos also makes sure
11:50 to take the radio with him from the
11:53 vault into the next levels while under
11:55 normal circumstances it's impossible to
11:58 take the radio out of the first level
11:59 dinos will end up bringing this radio
12:02 with him all the way until chamber 15.
12:05 it's worth noting that dinos did come
12:07 into some problems when routing mainly
12:09 because clipping out of bounds with a
12:11 physics object will always push the
12:14 player downwards and in some levels it
12:16 didn't seem possible to get on top of
12:18 the level after clipping down
12:21 dinos fixes this by clipping out of
12:24 bounds in very specific spots near pits
12:26 that actually extend a bit downwards in
12:28 out-of-bound space
12:30 with some quick reactions the player can
12:32 wall climb on these out of bounds walls
12:35 to get on top of the level other than
12:37 that the run mostly rinses and repeats
12:39 the same strat
12:41 get item save glitch clip yourself and
12:43 your physics object out of bounds wall
12:45 climb to the top of the level navigate
12:48 the level in out of bound space and clip
12:49 you and your physics object back in bounds
12:50 bounds
12:53 there are some smaller details like in
12:56 chamber 16 dinos replaces his trusty
12:58 vault radio with a turret because he
13:00 finds it easier to wall climb and clip with
13:01 with
13:03 this turret of course is kept for the
13:05 rest of the game until the glados boss fight
13:06 fight
13:09 escape o2 is also quite technical since
13:11 there are no pits in this level you have
13:14 to be really creative to get on top of
13:16 the chamber out of bounds
13:18 dinos loads the level while partially
13:20 stuck inside the wall
13:22 doing this you can barely break free
13:24 from the wall out of bounds and climb
13:27 back up which is a lot more tricky than
13:28 it looks
13:31 overall dinos has to restart his game a
13:34 whopping 36 times throughout this zero
13:35 portal run
13:38 and he has to wall climb over a ton of
13:40 massive walls which makes the run quite
13:43 annoying if you want to watch the run in
13:45 full it's linked in the description
13:48 below to this day only two other runners
13:51 have completed a zero portal run so it's
13:52 definitely not an easy feat to
13:55 accomplish but it's absurd that this
13:58 zero portal run is possible in the first
14:00 place as nearly 15 years after the
14:03 game's release we're still finding new
14:05 ways to break this timeless game who
14:08 knows what will be possible in 15 more
