0:04 hi everyone my name is dr. Joseph hammer
0:06 and this is a choose-your-own-adventure
0:10 therapy exercise where you'll be in the
0:14 seat of a therapist and across from you
0:17 will be a client who's come in for help
0:19 with mental health concerns and your job
0:22 is to listen to what the client has to
0:24 say and then choose one of two
0:28 interventions one of two things to say
0:30 in response that you think will help
0:32 move the session in a productive
0:36 direction and by choosing the
0:38 intervention that's a little bit better
0:40 you will help progress the session
0:44 towards the end of the exercise when you
0:47 choose an intervention that's less of a
0:50 good fit you will be taken to a dead-end
0:53 response where you'll see the client
0:55 respond as they might if you chose that
0:57 intervention and then you can click to
1:00 move back to the prior video and try the
1:02 other intervention to see how that works
1:05 instead and your goal is to try and
1:06 select the better of the two
1:09 interventions to reach the very end of
1:12 the exercise which is about twenty
1:15 back-and-forth and that's the
1:17 choose-your-own-adventure aspect of the
1:21 exercise I have structured the exercise
1:24 such that it's my clinical judgment as
1:26 someone who teaches people to do therapy
1:29 regarding which intervention is better
1:32 than the other and I'm not always right
1:33 so there's plenty of room for debate
1:36 about what a good intervention versus
1:38 the less good intervention is but these
1:40 choices exemplify some of those best
1:43 practices in core counseling skills that
1:46 I teach my graduate students so good
1:48 luck on your adventure and remember
1:51 after you've seen the client save their
1:54 statement click on the description of
1:58 the video to expand it look at the two
2:00 different intervention responses you
2:03 might use and click on the youtube link
2:06 underneath the response that you feel is
2:07 the better fit
