only after nixon threatened to withdraw
all aid from south vietnam and
guaranteed that the u.s would enforce
any peace treaty militarily did north
and south vietnam sign the paris peace
accords in january of 1973.
the u.s evacuated its last combat troops
that same year but peace didn't last and
when the war resumed north vietnamese
troops quickly overwhelmed southern forces
forces
the united states declined to live up to
nixon's pledge to defend the treaty by
military force by 1975 despite a decade
of direct american military engagement
vietnam was united under a communist government
