0:03 let's be honest even the most honest
0:06 truthful and ethical person will find
0:08 him or herself in the midst of a
0:11 full-blown ethical crisis at some time
0:13 in his or her career it is an
0:15 unfortunate yet inevitable event from
0:18 which no one escapes although you can't
0:20 hide from ethical dilemmas you can do
0:23 something to prepare yourself the first
0:24 step is to become aware and equip
0:27 yourself with knowledge and skills so
0:28 you'll be ready to handle whatever comes
0:33 your way so let's start with the
0:35 question what is ethics
0:38 well ethics are the basic moral ground
0:41 rules by which we live our lives we all
0:43 have either we have good ethics or bad
0:46 ethics you can't be devoid of it of
0:48 course you can have really really bad
0:51 ethics but that in itself is a form of
0:53 ethics it all has to do with our
0:55 conscience our conscience that more of
0:57 self awareness of our behavior that
0:59 tells us when something is right or
1:02 wrong the question is what do we do with
1:05 it especially in the workplace well
1:07 despite your level of good ethics you
1:09 come to work and your employer has
1:12 certain specific expectations of you
1:14 such as playing by the rules obeying the
1:17 law being honest in your behavior and
1:18 speech to look out for the company's
1:20 best interest and to show respect for
1:23 property and people these are the basic
1:31 so where do workplace ethical dilemmas
1:33 come from understand that ethical
1:35 dilemmas are everywhere the workplace
1:38 provides no shortage of ethical dilemmas
1:39 to test your ethical decision-making
1:43 skills they lie in the way you deliver
1:47 service or respond to crises how you
1:49 react to the policies and practices of
1:52 your company the choices you make
1:56 personally and in team situations how
1:57 you fulfill your obligations to
2:01 co-workers and customers how you present
2:02 your company and its products to
2:05 customers and shareholders how you deal
2:08 with outside agencies contractors and
2:10 vendors remember that everyone is
2:13 watching your ethics are always on
2:15 display to others be aware and careful
2:27 of course ethical dilemmas come in all
2:30 shapes and sizes some ethical dilemmas
2:32 are issues of consciousness while others
2:34 come from outside your sphere of
2:36 influence whatever kind of ethical
2:39 dilemma is each one has its own twist
2:41 and strategy for getting through it
2:43 first there are issues of conscience
2:46 such as should I call in sick or go to
2:48 the beach should I use the photocopy
2:50 machine or my personal project should I
2:53 use my computer laptop or my second job
2:55 can i pocket a little extra cash by
2:57 pledging the travel expense report that
3:00 no one seems to notice of course some of
3:02 these issues have few stakeholders and
3:05 others that many stakeholders such as
3:07 should I keep quiet about an
3:09 unnoticeable but costly manufacturing
3:11 mistake when everyone else seems to
3:13 ignore inflated sales and financial
3:15 numbers do you report it will just go
3:18 with the flow do I report harassing or
3:20 intimidating behavior of Supervisors or
3:23 others that can make trouble for me for
3:24 all these ethical dilemmas there is
3:27 usually a right and wrong answer an
3:29 ethical option and an unethical option
3:32 it may not be so easy because we have
3:34 strong needs and feelings as well as the
3:36 ability to rationalize and make excuses
3:39 to get what we want but you do have
3:41 freedom of choice to make the wrong or
3:43 right decision and you are obligated as
3:45 a functioning member of society to make
3:47 the honest choice for some of the consequences
3:48 consequences
3:51 this is why we have lost police and
3:54 jails we choose to obey and play by the
3:56 rules or face punishment
3:58 it's our conscience and our choice [Music]
4:07 the other kind of ethical dilemma comes
4:09 from outside your sphere of influence
4:12 you didn't ask for them and you've done
4:14 little if anything to encourage them
4:17 examples might be my boss is making lewd
4:21 sexual remarks in advances I work with
4:23 someone who can't tell the truth our top
4:26 management is corrupt and arrogant a
4:28 customer's always asking for special favors
4:29 favors
4:31 I am pressured to cover up for the
4:34 mismanagement of my supervisor I am
4:36 being isolated and discriminated against
4:39 for my views for these kinds of ethical
4:42 dilemmas you need strategy and a system
4:45 to help your ingenuity experience and
4:47 character may get you so far
4:50 but what you need are strategies that
4:58 regardless of whether you're dealing
5:00 with issues of conscience or with issues
5:02 outside your sphere of influence you
5:03 need to consider the stakeholders
5:06 stakeholders are all the people and
5:08 parties who have some connections to
5:10 your problem or situation you may not
5:12 think about the stakeholders who are
5:13 connected to your ethical decisions
5:15 because it's so easy to think only about
5:18 yourself interests and survival in an
5:21 ethical crisis but you are not alone
5:22 your decisions oftentimes have
5:25 consequences and stakeholders far beyond
5:28 what you initially considered so who are
5:31 the stakeholders well there are the
5:33 receivers these are the people who are
5:34 on the receiving end of your ethical
5:37 decisions third parties these are
5:40 individuals groups departments and even
5:42 communities that are affected by our
5:45 decisions the workplace environment and
5:48 culture because ethical decisions don't happen
5:49 happen
5:51 and can have a profound impact on
5:55 everyone and of course you physically
5:58 emotionally and spiritually
6:02 remember your career reputation family
6:06 safety and security are at stake it is
6:08 sobering to think about all the
6:09 stakeholders who are affected by your
6:11 ethical decisions you may not have
6:13 intentionally intended to hurt anyone
6:16 else or drag them into a crisis but you
6:18 did don't just assume that your
6:20 decisions will have no consequences
6:23 beyond your tiny world think about all
6:25 the stakeholders before you act not just
