0:02 Hello beauties. Today I'm sharing
0:04 something that can truly transform your
0:07 everyday look. How to style your hair to
0:09 enhance your face shape and natural
0:11 beauty. What can feel confusing and have
0:14 you secondg guessing will end today. As
0:15 a hair stylist of 18 years, I'll help
0:18 you determine your head shape, your
0:20 hairline, as well as your facial
0:21 structure that will allow you to
0:23 understand what hair part, styling
0:25 products, tips, and tricks will work to
0:27 create a hairstyle that elevates and
0:30 enhances your hair like never before.
0:32 Let's go. So, I recently did a video
0:35 that briefly touched on head shape, and
0:38 you guys loved that segment and asked
0:41 for more on it. So, ask and you shall
0:45 receive. To recap, because it can be a
0:48 little confusing, your head shape, the
0:51 top of your head, is known as your
0:54 cranial top. This refers to the height
0:57 and shape at the top of your skull. And
1:01 cranial tops are either high or low. A
1:04 high cranial top is when the visual
1:07 distance of your hairline in the top of
1:10 your head, so your crown is long. This
1:12 distance is typically longer than the
1:15 distance of your top third, which is the
1:17 distance between your hairline down to
1:19 right in between your brows. I dive into
1:22 facial proportions more in my previous
1:24 video, and I highly recommend that you
1:26 watch that if you haven't already. I'll
1:28 link it below. It will help you
1:31 understand the points that I'm making in
1:33 this video a bit more. So when your
1:37 cranial top is high, it creates a long
1:39 visual length through the top of your
1:42 head. Celebrity examples of high cranial
1:45 tops are Jennifer Aniston, Kendall
1:48 Jenner, and Laura Durn. As you can see
1:51 in these photos, they clearly have
1:54 distinct length through their part line.
1:56 High cranial tops create the look of
1:59 volume in the hair because of the height
2:03 and shape of the head. A low cranial top
2:06 is when your part line is shorter in
2:08 length and it creates a more flat
2:10 appearance in the top of your head.
2:13 Celebrity examples of low cranial tops
2:16 are Megan Markle, Olivia Cook, and
2:19 Carrie Washington. These women have less
2:21 visible length within their part line
2:23 and less height through the top of their
2:27 head rather than curving or rounding up.
2:30 It's definitely more flat looking. And
2:31 here you can see the difference
2:35 comparing high cranial tops versus low
2:39 cranial tops. High cranial tops I
2:42 suppose are what is the more desired
2:44 look. But this is not to say that low
2:47 cranial tops look bad. It all comes down
2:50 to how you choose to style your hair and
2:51 paying attention to your facial
2:54 proportions as well as what it is that
2:57 you want to minimize or enhance.
3:00 So, now that you understand high and low
3:03 cranial tops, you'll want to next
3:05 consider your face shape and facial
3:08 structure. This is important because it
3:11 allows you to figure out what works for
3:13 you over what works for someone else.
3:17 The rules of avoid this if you have that
3:20 are not a onesizefits all. So, we're
3:22 going to start with high cranial tops
3:25 and go over styling options that enhance
3:27 or minimize things within your face and
3:29 hairstyle. And don't worry, I will also
3:32 be going over low cranial tops as well.
3:33 And later in the video, I will be
3:35 breaking down easy and simple ways to
3:38 create the perfect hairstyle for you at
3:40 home on your own. Laura Durn, as
3:43 previously mentioned, has a high cranial
3:46 top and she has quite a bit of length to
3:49 her face. I would consider her an oblong
3:52 shape. Her entire body actually is quite
3:55 lengthy. She is 510 according to Google
3:58 and she has a long slender look, lots of
4:01 straight lines so to speak. If you share
4:03 a similar face shape and proportions to
4:07 Laura Durn, the rules would typically
4:10 advise that you avoid a middle part.
4:12 With your face being longer in length,
4:14 one would say that you don't need to
4:17 enhance or add to the length that you
4:20 naturally have. Majority of her facial
4:23 length is in her top and middle third.
4:26 However, she has a widow's peak, which
4:29 comes into play as to why a middle part
4:31 can work for her along with how she
4:34 chooses to style her hair, which this
4:36 will apply to you as well if you share
4:38 similar features as she does. So,
4:40 because of her widow's peak, this
4:43 automatically parts her hair at the
4:46 shortest point in her forehead, making
4:49 it appear shorter than it actually is.
4:51 But because of the natural length to her
4:54 face, as well as that high cranial top,
4:57 she still though keeps balance within
4:59 her face. You don't look at her and
5:03 think that she has a short forehead. A
5:07 middle part does however I think enhance
5:10 the narrowness she naturally has within
5:12 her face, which is again one of the
5:15 rules that apply to her face shape. But
5:18 as you can see in these photos, choosing
5:20 to wear her hair with texture, soft
5:23 waves, or even tucking adds to the
5:26 illusion of more width. This creates
5:29 balance, which is always the ideal goal
5:32 when it comes to styling your hair. A
5:35 side part shows off the highest point in
5:37 your forehead if you are like Laura
5:39 Durn, if you have similar features to
5:42 her, which one may consider to be a non
5:46 no, but it also allows for more of your
5:48 face to be seen and gives the illusion
5:51 of more width through your narrow shape.
5:54 The biggest thing that I noticed with
5:56 her when searching for photos is that
5:58 she most often wears her hair with a
6:02 deep side or offcenter part. usually
6:04 worn with some sort of waves. I think
6:07 that this works best for her over
6:10 wearing her hair straight. With her long
6:12 slender body and natural length in her
6:14 face, her hair worn with the waves
6:16 really balances her features best. The
6:19 angles that a side part creates along
6:21 with the waves complement the long
6:23 straight lines of her body and face.
6:26 They give her more contrast as a whole,
6:29 which is always the goal. and she is a
6:32 great example of how not following the
6:34 rules can work for
6:38 you. So now let's move into low cranial
6:40 tops and we're going to use both Carrie
6:42 Washington and Olivia Cook for our
6:45 examples. They both share low cranial
6:47 tops which is when the distance in your
6:50 part line is visibly shorter looking.
6:53 Low cranial tops have a flatter look to
6:56 them than high. So, while they both have
6:58 low cranial tops, they have very
7:00 different face shapes. Carrie Washington
7:03 has a length and narrowness within her
7:05 shape compared to Olivia Cook who is
7:08 more round and wide. And each of their
7:10 facial proportions are for the most part
7:13 quite even and their foreheads are both
7:16 a prominent feature. And Olivia Cook
7:18 specifically, her forehead is the widest
7:21 part of her entire face. In the previous
7:24 video I've referred to, I made the
7:26 mention of how low cranial tops when
7:29 wearing sleek straight styles parted
7:32 down the middle sort of make the face
7:35 appear a little larger. This is because
7:37 there is not that added height in the
7:39 top of the head as there is with high
7:42 cranial tops. So the eye sort of just
7:45 only has the face to directly look at.
7:48 This doesn't mean that you need to
7:51 completely avoid middle parts, though.
7:53 Your style will just need to be tweaked.
7:55 I'm going to show you some styling tips
7:57 that you can apply to yourself at home
7:59 in just a bit, but I first want to
8:02 explain a little bit more on why certain
8:04 styles work better for certain facial
8:06 proportions and prominent features. If
8:09 you are similar to Carrie Washington and
8:12 you have more length in your face than
8:16 width, a sleek middle part complements
8:19 and balances the imaginary horizontal
8:23 line that a low cranial top can create.
8:26 This type of horizontal line is more
8:28 visible in shapes like Olivia Cook
8:32 because you have more width than length
8:34 through your shape. It's almost like
8:37 having parallel lines over
8:39 perpendicular. Hopefully, this is making
8:42 sense to you guys. With a low cranial
8:45 top, one may automatically think that a
8:48 side part is the immediate answer, and
8:51 it can be, but this is where your
8:54 prominent features come into play for
8:56 choosing styles. So Olivia Cook
8:59 naturally has the most width through her
9:02 forehead and her face naturally curves
9:04 in a little at her jaw. One could say
9:07 that she is sort of a mix of both round
9:10 and heart shapes. When choosing to wear
9:14 a deep side part, it ends up enhancing
9:17 her forehead, which is already one of
9:19 her more prominent features. The side
9:22 part shows off her width and the natural
9:26 inward curve of her jaw only increases
9:28 the appearance of her forehead. Your eye
9:32 more so goes directly to this area. I do
9:34 think though when she has more length to
9:36 her hair, it's a little less noticeable
9:39 as there is more hair for the eye to
9:42 move around to. Carrie Washington. While
9:45 her forehead is a prominent feature due
9:48 to her face overall being less wide, a
9:51 side part in her case doesn't add any
9:53 excessive amount of width to her shape.
9:55 So whether she wears her hair more
9:58 waved, straight, or with a heavy side
10:01 bang, it adds to the illusion of more
10:03 height in her cranial top while creating
10:06 soft angles in her face as well. Bangs
10:08 are also a great option if you have
10:10 features similar to her. They will
10:12 minimize the height in your forehead as
10:15 well as bring the eye up a bit further
10:16 through the top of your head. This gives
10:19 the illusion of more height through the
10:22 head, giving those high cranial top
10:24 vibes. The best style for shapes and
10:27 features like Olivia Cook, I think, are
10:30 still actually opting for a middle part
10:33 with some sort of soft curtain style
10:35 bang or face frame. This helps to
10:38 minimize the natural width you have in
10:40 your forehead, creating those soft
10:42 angles that complement the natural
10:44 angles you have through your jaw. You
10:47 sort of get that diamond feel through
10:49 your face. It may not give you the most
10:52 height in your cranial top, but it still
10:54 helps to balance your other features.
10:57 So, you don't want to just focus on one
10:59 set aspect. You want to look at the
11:02 whole picture. Also, her opting for a
11:05 style with her hair pulled back and up
11:07 with a curtain bang or even a full bang
11:10 really compliments her as well. She has
11:12 the added height in the top adding to
11:15 the illusion of that higher cranial top
11:17 which now leads us into our final
11:19 segment of styling tips for you low
11:22 cranial top ladies. I am excited for
11:23 this part.
11:27 So, the goal with low cranial tops is to
11:30 add the illusion of height in the top of
11:32 your head, which is going to require
11:36 products and tools that create volume in
11:39 your hair. Volume products are going to
11:42 create the texture needed to lift and
11:44 plump the hair. So, a volume mousse is
11:47 the most ideal product to use for this,
11:50 and it works for all hair types. If you
11:52 have fine thick straight hair like
11:55 myself, you might do well pairing a root
11:56 lifter with it as you need a little
11:59 extra boost. But any other hair type, a
12:02 mousse is going to be your best bet. So
12:04 when your hair is wet, you will apply
12:07 your volume products to the top section
12:09 of your head and make sure that you're
12:11 working the product into that back side
12:14 of your crown as well. You want to apply
12:17 your mousse first and then apply your
12:19 other styling products if you need
12:21 something for frizz control or something
12:23 that's going to maybe tame down your
12:24 wave. And I will link some of my
12:26 favorite options in the description and
12:28 pinned comment below if you guys are
12:30 looking for any suggestions to try
12:33 during your blow dry. When you get to
12:36 this top section, you want to make sure
12:40 you are lifting the hair straight up.
12:42 Whether you just rough dry, if you use a
12:45 blowout brush or a separate round brush,
12:48 be sure that you lift that hair to
12:51 create the most volume here to help add
12:53 that illusion of more height in your
12:55 cranial top. And you want to do this
12:58 regardless of where you part your hair.
13:00 So, if it's on the side or middle, you
13:02 are going to blow dry the same way,
13:05 lifting up. After your hair is dry, I
13:07 like to break out a hot tool I can't
13:10 live without, which is the Volu. This is
13:12 going to create that extra level of
13:15 volume here to help give the illusion of
13:18 more height in your shape. Paired with
13:20 your volume products, this is going to
13:24 create and hold your volume in your hair
13:27 much longer than teasing alone would.
13:28 And it's much less stressful on the
13:30 hair. You don't have to take massive
13:33 precaution brushing out your hair post
13:35 use like you do with teasing to be sure
13:37 you're not breaking up your hair. It's
13:39 just much more gentle. You're going to
13:42 use this in your top sections by simply
13:45 closing it onto your hair in sections
13:47 similar to how you hold a flat iron, but
13:49 you're not gliding it through your whole
13:52 hair. And the only concern with this
13:55 tool is that you want to be sure that
13:57 you leave enough of your hair on your
14:00 top section where you part it to cover
14:03 the texture created by a volu. You don't
14:06 want the texture to be visible. When I
14:08 first started using this tool years ago,
14:11 it did take me a couple of times to
14:13 figure out exactly how high up I could
14:16 bring it along my part line, but once I
14:18 got it down, I just have found it to be
14:21 one of the easiest ways to create volume
14:24 and added height in the hair. Here you
14:26 can see a sideby-side comparison of me
14:28 using it to create that added boost of
14:30 volume and height within my hair. You
14:33 can apply as little or as much volume as
14:36 you want to your own hair. It's very
14:39 easy to use, very customizable. And a
14:42 bonus tip for adding the illusion of a
14:44 high cranial top. If you are posing for
14:47 photos, simply angle your head down just
14:50 ever so slightly. This paired with your
14:52 volume products and hot tool will have
14:54 everyone fooled into thinking you have
14:56 that high cranial top. I so hope that
14:58 you all enjoyed this week's video. Be
15:00 sure to leave a heart emoji in the
15:02 comments if you did and let me know if
15:04 you would like to see more videos on
15:06 this topic. In the meantime, I will
15:08 leave you with this video right here to
15:10 find out what type of curls work best
15:12 for your face shape. Thanks for watching
