0:01 all right well welcome
0:04 back we're embarking on installment
0:06 number nine now of summer in the
0:10 systematics our 24 2024 study of
0:13 christology um on Sunday evenings it's
0:15 been a great joy to me to be able to put
0:17 this together hope it's been a benefit
0:19 to you uh we'll move the tassel to the
0:21 other side of the cap next Sunday night
0:23 as we finish up our study of of
0:25 christology and by way of reminder we've
0:27 worked through the pre-existence of
0:29 Christ the deity of Christ the humanity
0:31 of Christ the natures of Christ the
0:33 Incarnation of Christ The Life of Christ
0:37 The Obedience of Christ the death of
0:39 Christ and then tonight we're going to
0:42 look at the resurrection of Christ and
0:43 of course this is a cardinal and
0:46 Cornerstone doctrine of the Christian
0:49 faith consider these words from Edward
0:51 Robinson he was a 19th century biblical
0:53 scholar he says the great fact of the
0:55 resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
0:58 dead by which he was declared the Son of
1:01 God with power Romans 14 and in which
1:02 God fulfilled the good news of the
1:05 promise made to the fathers acts 13
1:07 stands out everywhere prominently on the
1:09 pages of the New Testament as one of the
1:12 Cardinal doctrines of the Christian
1:15 faith then here's good old Spurgeon the
1:17 resurrection of our divine Lord from the
1:20 dead is the Cornerstone of Christian
1:22 doctrine perhaps I might more accurately
1:25 call it the Keystone of the arch of
1:27 Christianity for if that fact would be
1:30 disproved the whole fabric of the the
1:33 gospel would fall to the ground that's
1:34 exactly what Pastor Mike said earlier
1:35 when he was mentioning 1 Corinthians
1:37 15:14 we'll get into that later but
1:39 without the resurrection it all it all
1:43 falls to pieces or Bruce deerest at the
1:44 heart of the Christian faith is the
1:46 claim that Jesus Christ on the third day
1:50 rose from the dead and is alive forever
1:52 more just to get us started just to get
1:53 us warmed up a few of these quotes from
1:55 some notable theologians to get us
1:57 thinking about this and we've got a lot
1:59 of territory to cover this evening this
2:01 is a massive topic so to try to squeeze
2:03 it into one hour or less is going to be
2:05 pretty Herculean but we're going to give
2:08 it a go we have eight points tonight I
2:10 think I've preached like 17o messages
2:12 before so eight should be a breeze but
2:13 we have an eight-point outline you see
2:15 it on your worksheet there this evening
2:17 and we're going to go through eight
2:20 different key biblical and Theological
2:22 truths related to the truth that Jesus
2:25 of Nazareth after being crucified on a
2:28 Roman cross after dying really did rise
2:30 from the grave and in doing so conquered
2:34 death and sin and Satan and in doing so
2:35 secured for the believer the hope of
2:37 eternal life and as we're going to see
2:40 the reality of our own future
2:42 Resurrection here's our first point
2:44 number one of8 we're going to look first
2:46 at the Prophecies of the
2:48 Resurrection The Prophecies of the
2:53 Resurrection as acts 1:3 here notes the
2:54 resurrection of Our Lord was
2:57 demonstrated by many convincing proofs
2:59 he also presented himself alive after
3:01 his suffering by many convincing proofs
3:04 now recall that scene in in Luke CH 24
3:07 the the road to emus scene and the the
3:10 recently resurrected Jesus is there on
3:12 the road to EMAs and he's walking
3:14 alongside two of his disciples but they
3:16 don't realize it's him initially not
3:17 only do they not realize it's him
3:19 they're confused and they're perplexed
3:21 and they're discouraged that's the whole
3:23 set setup there and they're discouraged
3:25 over what had happened in Jerusalem in
3:28 recent days Jesus the one they had been
3:30 following had been Cru cified he had
3:32 died he'd been buried in this tomb and
3:33 though he's standing there right in
3:36 their midst they don't recognize it and
3:39 look how Luke records their words of
3:41 discouragement this is from Luke 24
3:43 where these two disciples note how the
3:46 chief priest and a rulers delivered him
3:47 to the sentence of death they're saying
3:49 this as he's right there with them and
3:52 crucified him but we were hoping that it
3:54 was he who was going to redeem Israel
3:56 indeed besides all this it is the third
3:58 day since these things happen you can
4:01 sense the discipline ointment well
4:03 eventually it clicks for them and
4:04 eventually they realize that they are in
4:06 the presence of the Risen Lord and they
4:09 they did so as Jesus in his resurrected
4:12 State explained the scriptures to them
4:14 and how the scriptures all pointed in in
4:16 in some sense to him and his
4:19 resurrection he says this in Luke 24
4:21 these are my words which I spoke to you
4:23 while I was still with you that all
4:25 things which are written about me in the
4:27 law of Moses and the prophets and the
4:30 Psalms must be fulfilled then he opened
4:32 up their minds to understand the
4:34 scriptures and he said to them thus it
4:37 is written that the Christ would suffer
4:40 and Rise Again from the dead the third
4:43 day now Luke here doesn't record which
4:45 Old Testament text Christ was
4:47 referencing here when he says thus it is
4:48 written that the Christ would suffer and
4:50 Rise Again from the dead the third day
4:51 but as we're going to see here
4:54 momentarily there were several Old
4:55 Testament passages that he could have
4:59 been referring to there or then consider
5:00 the Apostle Paul PA's testimony before
5:04 King agria in Acts 26 he says this after
5:06 being seized and arrested and then
5:08 taking his appeal he says I stand Here
5:10 bearing witness both to small and great
5:12 stating nothing but what the prophets
5:14 and Moses said was going to take place
5:16 that the Christ was to suffer and that
5:18 as first of the Resurrection from the
5:20 dead he was going to Proclaim light both
5:23 to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles
5:25 so like Jesus in in Luke
5:28 24 Paul here doesn't specify which
5:31 section of the prophets of Moses he's
5:33 referring to that refer to Christ rising
5:36 from the dead so where do we go then
5:37 where where do we need to search and
5:40 find Old Testament scriptures and
5:42 prophecies concerning the future
5:44 resurrection of the coming Christ well
5:46 at the top of the list would be psalm
5:50 16 Psalm 16:10 specifically which says
5:52 for you will not forsake my soul to
5:55 sheol you will not give your Holy One
5:56 over to see
5:59 corruption this is the the clearest Old
6:00 Testament prophecy concerning the
6:03 resurrection of Christ where where God
6:05 through the inspired pen of David here
6:06 said that he would not allow his holy
6:10 one to undergo corruption or or Decay
6:11 and how do we know how do we say that
6:14 psalm 16 is referencing the Messiah how
6:16 do we know it was fulfilled in Jesus
6:19 well we go over to Acts chapter 2 here's
6:22 Peter's inspired words at Pentecost he
6:26 says men brothers I may confidently say
6:28 to you regarding the patriarch David
6:30 that he both died and was buried and his
6:33 tomb is with us to this day and so
6:35 because he was a prophet and knew that
6:37 God had sworn to him with an oath to set
6:38 one of the fruit of his body on his
6:41 throne he looked ahead and spoke of the
6:44 resurrection of the Christ that he was
6:46 neither forsaken to Hades nor did his
6:49 flesh see corruption so there you go
6:51 Peter moved by the spirit recognized
6:53 affirmed here in Acts Acts chapter 2
6:56 that psalm 16 pointed to to the Future
6:58 bodily resurrection of the Messiah who
7:02 we know was Jesus not only that though
7:04 in that same sermon at Pentecost Peter
7:06 noted that it was not only Christ's
7:09 death which was according to the
7:10 predetermined plan and forn knowledge of
7:13 God we see that here in Acts 2:23 you
7:15 nailed him to a cross by the hands of
7:17 Lawless men and put him to death but it
7:19 was also his resurrection that was
7:22 brought about by that same predetermined
7:25 plan of God God raised him up again
7:28 putting an end to the agony of death so
7:30 psalm 16:10 is one of those Old
7:33 Testament prophecies concerning the
7:34 resurrection of the coming Messiah there
7:36 are also other Old Testament prophecies
7:39 or proofs which would otherwise indicate
7:41 that the coming Messiah would not only
7:44 live but he would die and he would
7:47 rise job 19 is often cited as one that
7:50 at least anticipates our Lord's Rising
7:52 as for me I know that my redeemer lives
7:55 and at the last he will rise up over the
7:59 dust of this world or Isaiah 258
8:00 speaking prophetically says he will
8:03 swallow up death for all time that could
8:05 Encompass the
8:07 resurrection so those are some Old
8:09 Testament Prophecies of the Resurrection
8:11 now we're going to get into our second
8:13 point which is the proclamation of the
8:16 Resurrection so prophecies Proclamation
8:19 how am I differentiating the two well
8:20 I'm distinguishing the two at least for
8:22 purposes of tonight's Lesson by saying
8:24 prophecies that was our first heading to
8:26 refer to those Old Testament passages
8:28 which foretold the future resurrection
8:30 of the Christ
8:32 and by proclamation here I mean Jesus's
8:35 own words in the New Testament where he
8:38 speaks to his own disciples face to face
8:41 about his coming death and resurrection
8:44 and as we see recorded in his gospels in
8:47 the gospels during his years on Earth
8:50 Jesus did speak over and over about his
8:52 coming death and Resurrection like here
8:54 John 21:19 he says destroy this
8:58 Sanctuary or Temple and in 3 days I will
9:00 raise it up he spoke of laying down his
9:03 life and taking it up again in John 10 I
9:05 lay down my life so that I may take it
9:07 again no one takes it away from me but
9:10 from myself I lay it down I have
9:11 authority to lay it down and I have
9:14 authority to take it up again uh he also
9:16 made claims that were right in line with
9:18 the Old Testament in terms of what it
9:20 prophesied about Israel's Messiah when
9:22 he says I am the resurrection and the
9:25 life he who believes in me will live
9:26 even if he dies and everyone who lives
9:29 and Believes In Me will never die ever
9:31 and then there are several other direct
9:35 statements in the gospels like these uh
9:36 some are from Christ himself by the way
9:38 some are from the Holy Spirit directed
9:40 gospel authors but they all refer to the
9:43 fact that Christ would not only die but
9:45 that he would rise again from the dead
9:47 Matthew 17 here says the son of man is
9:49 going to be delivered into the hands of
9:51 men and they will kill him and he will
9:53 be raised on the third
9:57 day Matthew 2018 the son of man will be
9:58 betrayed to the chief priests and
10:00 scribes and they will condemn him to
10:02 death and will deliver him over to the
10:05 Gentiles to Mock and fog and crucify him
10:08 and on the third day he will be raised
10:11 up Matthew 26 but after I have been
10:14 raised I will go ahead of you to Galilee
10:17 Matthew 2661 this man stated I am able
10:19 to destroy the sanctuary of God and to
10:20 rebuild it in three days that's when
10:25 they're accusing Jesus Matthew 27 sir we
10:27 remember that when he was still alive
10:30 that deceiver said after after 3 days I
10:34 am to rise again Mark 9:9 and as they
10:35 were coming down from the mountain he
10:36 gave them orders not to recount to
10:39 anyone what they had seen until the son
10:43 of man rose from the dead Mark 9:31 for
10:44 he was teaching his disciples and
10:46 telling them the son of man is to be
10:48 delivered into the hands of men and they
10:49 will kill him and when he has been
10:52 killed he will rise again three days
10:56 later Mark 10 behold we are going up to
10:57 Jerusalem and the son of man will be
10:59 betrayed to the chief priest and the
11:01 scribes and they will condemn him to
11:02 death and will deliver him over to the
11:05 Gentiles and they will mock him and spit
11:08 on him and flog him and kill him and 3
11:11 days later he will rise again Mark 14
11:13 but after I have been raised I will go
11:16 ahead of you to Galilee Luke 18 for he
11:18 will be delivered over to the Gentiles
11:19 and will be mocked and mistreated and
11:21 spit upon and after they have fogged him
11:23 they will kill him and the third day he
11:25 will rise again I'm just going to read
11:27 these for 45 minutes we got okay no we
11:29 could go on and on but Matthew
11:32 16 from that time Jesus began to show
11:34 his disciples that he must go to
11:35 Jerusalem and suffer many things from
11:38 the elders and chief priests and scribes
11:39 and be killed and be raised up on the
11:43 third day one more Matthew 17 and as
11:46 they were coming down from the mountain
11:48 Transfiguration Jesus commanded them
11:50 saying tell the vision to no one until
11:53 the son of man has risen from the dead
11:55 so those are just a few of these
11:56 examples of the Proclamation of the
11:58 Resurrection that came from the lips of
12:00 Our Lord or from these New Testament
12:02 authors as they recorded his life uh in
12:05 the gospel accounts next we're going to
12:08 look at the proofs of the Resurrection
12:11 that's our heading number three now not
12:13 not withstanding all that I just read
12:15 off for you from the New Testament from
12:17 the gospel specifically from the book of
12:18 Acts from psalm
12:22 16 there have been Skeptics there have
12:24 been doubters there are not only those
12:27 who outright deny that Jesus ever
12:29 existed even as a historical figure
12:31 which is historically laughable as a
12:34 matter of objective research but there
12:36 are those who will admit that he lived
12:38 but deny that he rose and or at least
12:41 deny that he experienced a physical
12:44 bodily Resurrection but why why would
12:47 such a person ever make an argument like
12:49 that well the argument that's been out
12:51 there for centuries now is there because
12:55 if Jesus rose if he says who he says he
12:57 is that means he's owed the allegiance
12:59 he demands
13:02 and sinful creatures that we are before
13:05 God regenerates Us by a Divine work of
13:07 his Spirit we don't want to give Jesus
13:10 Allegiance we don't want to make him the
13:12 Lord of our life and so a natural point
13:14 of attack for the unbeliever is to go
13:17 after his resurrection and to deny that
13:19 Jesus rose physically from the Tomb in
13:22 which he was laid and all sorts of
13:23 arguments have been offered out there
13:25 through the years to argue against the
13:27 biblical testimony the proofs that we
13:29 just looked at concerning the
13:32 resurrection of Jesus some will argue
13:34 that Jesus never
13:38 died they'll call it the Swoon Theory
13:39 and the whole idea is that through the
13:41 pain through the agony through the
13:43 lashes and beatings and nails and the
13:45 rest he he just lapsed into a state of
13:48 unconsciousness but he he didn't die and
13:49 then what was would happen they would
13:51 say is that he was then placed in the
13:52 cooler air of the Tomb and then in the
13:55 cooler air of the Tomb he revived and he
13:57 woke up and then rolled back the the
14:00 stone and walked out only to eventually die
14:01 die
14:04 again well that view ignores many
14:06 details but I mean what about the fact
14:08 that a spear was driven into his side
14:10 that would have been the killshot to
14:11 somebody who was in such a weakened
14:14 condition as he was at that point or
14:15 what about the fact that the Roman
14:17 soldiers who were experts in in
14:20 brutality and death didn't bother to
14:21 break his legs because they were so
14:23 certain that he was
14:25 dead or what about the fact that there
14:26 was this armed Roman guard there
14:29 guarding carefully the tomb keeping
14:30 watch over it to make sure that very
14:33 thing the Skeptics say happened wouldn't
14:35 happen it it doesn't add
14:37 up another theory that's offered there
14:39 is that the resurrection was just this
14:42 fabricated story told by Jesus's
14:44 followers kind of a a warm memory that
14:46 they wanted to keep alive they didn't
14:48 want to lose their memories of the good
14:50 times so they wanted to perpetuate the
14:52 telling of his story his miracles his
14:54 good teaching for future posterity for
14:57 for generations to come but that theory
14:59 also makes no sense as it's complete
15:00 completely undermined by the way those
15:04 very followers lived after Jesus rose
15:06 right they they went from fleeing in
15:09 fear once he was put to Death To Boldly
15:11 proclaiming his resurrection not even
15:14 the threat of death or or losing family
15:17 or losing limbs could slow down their
15:20 proclamation of the Risen Lord and what
15:23 brought that about the reality of his
15:25 resurrection the reality that he rose
15:29 their bold stand their witness their
15:30 willingness to die for what they had
15:31 seen with their own eyes and what they
15:33 had heard with their own ears and even
15:35 touched with their own hands proved that
15:38 they weren't living for a
15:41 lie JP Morland notes they were willing
15:44 speaking of these post-resurrection
15:46 Witnesses they were willing to spend the
15:48 rest of their lives proclaiming this
15:50 without any payoff from a human point of
15:51 view it's not as though there was a
15:53 mansion awaiting them on the
15:55 Mediterranean they faced a life of
15:57 hardship they often went without food
15:59 slept exposed to the elements were
16:02 ridiculed beaten imprisoned and finally
16:04 most of them were executed in torturous
16:08 ways for what for Good Intentions no
16:10 because they were convinced beyond a
16:11 shadow of a doubt that they had seen
16:14 Jesus Christ alive from the
16:17 dead there's Simon Greenleaf he was
16:19 actually a law professor he says it was
16:21 impossible that the disciples could have
16:23 persisted in affirming the truth of the
16:25 Resurrection had not Jesus actually
16:26 risen from the
16:28 dead well there are many other false
16:30 theories out there which have been put
16:32 forth over the centuries by those who
16:34 reject the idea that Jesus underwent a
16:37 true physical bodily Resurrection we
16:38 don't have time to get into all those
16:40 but but ultimately for those who claim
16:43 that Jesus did not rise bodily from the
16:45 dead that he didn't resurrect what
16:47 they're doing is rejecting scripture
16:49 they're rejecting the very words of the
16:50 Living God and in doing so they're
16:51 rejecting God himself because the
16:54 scriptures are indisputably clear that
16:57 Jesus rose bodily from the
17:00 dead now so far I've just laid out the
17:01 counterarguments things like the Swoon
17:04 Theory or the the friend the friend
17:05 theory just preserving the good memories
17:07 of Jesus Theory well let's just look at
17:09 some of the biblical proofs
17:12 which establish beyond the shadow of a
17:14 doubt that Jesus really did rise from
17:15 the grave and he really did rise
17:18 physically in bodily form first of all
17:21 he was taken from the cross John 19 now
17:24 after these things Joseph of arthea
17:26 being a disciple of Jesus but secretly
17:28 because of his fear of the Jews asked
17:30 pilate that he might take away the body
17:33 of Jesus and pilate granted permission
17:35 so he came and took away his body not
17:37 his Spirit his
17:40 body also in John 19 we see that Jesus
17:42 was placed in a garden tomb now in the
17:43 place where he was crucified there was a
17:45 garden and the garden a new Tomb in
17:47 which no one had yet been laid therefore
17:49 because of the Jewish Day of preparation
17:52 since the tomb was nearby they laid
17:54 Jesus there we also know here from
17:57 Matthew 27 that that tomb was guarded by
17:59 soldiers who were there specifically to
18:02 prevent anybody from removing or
18:05 tampering or having access to the Lord's
18:08 body and then we see and we're going to
18:10 get into this much in much much more
18:12 detail later that he appeared he
18:14 appeared alive in bodily form to many
18:17 eyewitnesses acts one he also presented
18:19 himself alive after his suffering by
18:21 many convincing
18:23 proofs and ryy notes the number and
18:24 variety of people in a variety of
18:26 circumstances who saw the Lord after his
18:29 resurrection give overwhelming proof Pro
18:33 that he did rise from the dead and then
18:34 there are the are all the
18:36 post-resurrection appearances to
18:38 individuals where Jesus appeared bodily
18:41 we see here to Mary Magdalene after he
18:42 had risen early on the first day of the
18:44 week he first appeared to Mary Magdalene
18:47 from whom he had cast out seven demons
18:48 she went reported to those who had been
18:51 with him while they were mourning and
18:55 crying then he appeared to Peter Luke 24
18:56 they stood up at that very hour and
18:58 returned to Jerusalem and found gathered
19:00 together the 11 and those with them who
19:02 were saying the Lord has really risen
19:05 and has appeared to Simon to to Peter he
19:08 appeared to we saw this earlier the
19:11 disciples on the road to Emmas and it
19:12 happened that while they were conversing
19:14 and debating Jesus himself approached
19:15 and was going with them though they
19:17 didn't recognize him initially he
19:19 appeared to the disciples in the upper
19:20 room and it happened that while they
19:22 were conversing and debating Jesus
19:26 himself approached and was going with
19:29 them oh I just did Luke 24 again I'm
19:33 sorry wrong quote he appeared to the
19:35 seven of the disciples beside the Sea of
19:38 Galilee after these things he manifested
19:39 himself again to the disciples at the
19:41 Sea of tiberias and he manifested
19:44 himself in this way Simon Peter and
19:46 Thomas called dimus and Nathaniel of
19:48 canaa and Galilee and the sons of
19:50 Zebedee and two others of his disciples
19:52 were together he appeared to the
19:54 apostles and more than 500 Brethren and
19:57 to James his half brother the Lord's
19:59 half brother after that 1 Corinthians 15
20:01 he appeared to more than 500 Brothers at
20:02 one time most of whom remain until now
20:04 but some have fallen asleep after that
20:07 he appeared to James then to all the
20:10 apostles and then we know from acts 1:9
20:12 he appeared to those who witnessed his
20:14 Ascension after he had said these things
20:15 he was lifted up while they were looking
20:19 on and a cloud received him out of their
20:21 sight Now One account of course of a
20:23 post-resurrection appearance that I've
20:26 left out so far is that of Thomas
20:28 doubting Thomas as he's affectionately
20:30 known in day he deserves his own special
20:32 treatment here recall that Thomas had
20:34 this tremendous uncertainty about the
20:37 bodily resurrection of our Lord and what
20:41 was Jesus's response well he he gave
20:43 Thomas the chance to put him to the test
20:45 John 20 then he said to Thomas bring
20:47 your fing your finger here and see my
20:49 hands and bring your hand here and put
20:51 it into my side and do not be
20:53 unbelieving but
20:55 believing and then at that point Thomas
20:57 is convinced that that Jesus had risen
20:59 that he had conquered the grave and he
21:03 and that he was Thomas's Lord and God In
21:05 the Flesh Thomas answered and said to
21:08 him my Lord and my God after touching the
21:09 the
21:11 side so the Christians claim then our
21:15 our claim that that Jesus rose bodily
21:17 from the dead it doesn't just rest on
21:19 one isolated shred of evidence doesn't
21:22 rest on on the testimony of a singular
21:24 witness now we see as we work our way
21:26 methodically and carefully through the
21:28 gospels that over this period of many
21:30 many days on multiple different
21:32 occasions as recorded in a variety of
21:34 different scriptures Jesus appeared
21:37 alive sometimes it was to one individual
21:39 sometimes to two sometimes to larger
21:40 groups sometimes as we saw in 1
21:42 Corinthians 15 even to groups of
21:45 hundreds of people which is why Thomas
21:47 Arnold would note that the resurrection
21:50 is the best attested fact in human
21:53 history not only were there the
21:56 appearances there were the acts that the
21:59 Risen Lord performed which pointed to
22:01 the reality that he truly had risen
22:03 bodily through his
22:05 resurrection like he had breakfast he
22:07 prepared breakfast for his disciples
22:09 Jesus said to them come have breakfast
22:11 Spirits don't typically fix up the bacon
22:13 and the eggs I know it was fish but you
22:17 get the point he ate fish Luke 24 and
22:18 while they were still not believing
22:20 because of their joy and were still
22:21 marveling he said to them have you
22:23 anything here to eat and they gave him a
22:25 piece of broiled fish and he took it and
22:28 ate it before them Spirits don't do that
22:30 Peter even said that Christ ate and
22:33 drank with his disciples after the
22:35 resurrection acts 10 says God raised him
22:37 up on the third day and granted that he
22:40 appear not to all the people but to
22:42 Witnesses who were chosen beforehand by
22:44 God that is to us who ate and drank with
22:48 him after he arose from the dead uh he
22:50 invited his perplexed disciples to
22:53 examine the nail marks in his hands see
22:56 my hands and feet that it is I myself
22:58 touch me and see for a spirit does not
23:00 have Flesh and Bones as you see that I
23:03 have and as we just saw with Thomas he
23:05 invited him to touch the spear wound in
23:07 his side these aren't the actions in
23:10 other words of a a disembodied spirit
23:12 being these are the actions of a person
23:14 with a body and they point conclusively
23:18 to the fact that Jesus rose
23:21 bodily Rolland mun notes that only by
23:23 tampering with the biblical evidence
23:25 impugning the testimony of the numerous
23:28 eyewitnesses and disclaiming the verbal
23:30 inspir ation of the scriptures can the
23:32 bodily resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth
23:35 be denied
23:38 amen so those are some of the proofs of
23:40 the resurrection and next we're going to
23:43 get to our fourth Point here which is
23:46 the power of the Resurrection that's
23:48 your fourth heading there the power of
23:49 the Resurrection we'll treat this one
23:51 briefly but it's important to note that
23:53 the resurrection of Our Lord was was
23:55 underg guarded by and was a
23:59 demonstration of God's Mighty hand of
24:02 power now God's Mighty hand of power was
24:04 on display throughout the Old Testament
24:06 scriptures we know that and it was his
24:08 mighty hand of power which caused the
24:11 Red Sea to part it was his mighty hand
24:13 of power that caused Mana to fall from
24:16 the sky it was his mighty hand of power
24:18 that caused an axe head to float it was
24:20 his mighty hand of power that that
24:22 caused seemingly insurmountable enemies
24:26 of Israel to be defeated but all of
24:28 those manifestations of God's power
24:31 stand in the shadow ultimately of the
24:33 resurrection of Jesus Christ and the
24:35 divine power which undergirded that
24:38 specific event recall the words of
24:42 Paul how he wanted the Believers there
24:45 in Philippi to to know him and the power
24:46 of his resurrection Christ's
24:48 resurrection and the fellowship of his
24:51 sufferings being conformed to his death
24:52 in order that I may attain to the
24:54 resurrection from the dead the power
24:56 he's noting here of the Resurrection
24:58 note that Paul here isn't saying I wants
25:02 you to note the power of the the the the
25:04 Exodus out of Egypt he's not asking that
25:05 they would know the power of the
25:08 floating ax head he's not wanting them
25:11 to know the power of of Israel's Mighty
25:15 conquest of the you name the IES no he
25:16 wanted them to know the greatest form of
25:19 power this world has ever seen namely
25:21 the power of the
25:23 Resurrection he expressed a similar
25:26 sentiment in Ephesians
25:29 1 he say so that you the eyes of your
25:31 heart having been enlightened will know
25:33 what is the hope of his calling what are
25:35 the riches of the glory of his
25:37 inheritance in the Saints and what is
25:40 the surpassing greatness of his power
25:42 toward us who believe according to the
25:44 working of the might of his strength
25:47 which he worked in Christ by raising him
25:49 from the dead and seating him at his
25:51 right hand in the Heavenly places note
25:53 the reference there to God's power and
25:56 might and strength and how God's
25:58 omnipotence was displayed in raising
26:01 Jesus from the dead I agree with mun
26:03 again he says the resurrection of Jesus
26:05 Christ from the dead is the most
26:08 colossal demonstration of the power of
26:10 God of all
26:13 time that takes us to our next point
26:14 point number five we're going to look at
26:18 the prospect of the Resurrection we're
26:19 already turning over the sheet we're
26:21 right on time the prospect of the
26:24 resurrection and by that I mean that the
26:27 resurrection of Jesus from the dead
26:29 paved the way for our own Resurrection
26:33 our own future Resurrection unto life to
26:36 build out this idea we'll start here 1
26:39 Corinthians 15:20 says but now Christ
26:42 has been raised from the dead the first
26:45 fruits of those who have fallen
26:47 asleep here Paul is borrowing from the
26:50 Old Testament first fruits under the
26:52 Mosaic law refer to those those first
26:55 heads of of ripened grain which were
26:57 were dedicated to God and they were
26:59 dedicated to God in anticipation of his
27:02 his expected blessing of provision when
27:04 the whole Harvest or the full Harvest
27:07 came in so so the first fruits when a
27:09 first fruit deposit was made or a first
27:11 fruit offering was made it was like an
27:13 an earnest deposit a a down payment if
27:15 you will to thank the Lord for the
27:18 Harvest that was to come you see the
27:21 idea here in Exodus 23 you shall bring
27:23 the choice first fruits of your ground
27:26 into the house of Yahweh your God now in
27:28 a similar manner the resurrection of
27:31 Jesus Christ from the dead was the first
27:35 fruits of all men according to Paul
27:37 Jesus's resurrection paved the way for
27:41 the future resurrection of all people
27:42 including those who will be resurrected
27:44 under the resurrection of judgment and
27:45 those who will be resurrected unto a
27:48 resurrection of life and we see both
27:50 resurrections by the way mentioned in
27:53 this passage next couple of passages 1
27:55 Corinthians 15 again says for Since By A
27:57 Man Came Death By A man also came the
28:00 resurrection C of the Dead for as in
28:03 Adam all die so also in Christ all will
28:06 be made alive that's a a resurrection
28:08 reference or John
28:11 5:28 sayso not Marvel at this for an
28:12 hour is coming in which all who are in
28:14 the tombs will hear his voice and will
28:16 come forth those who did the Good Deeds
28:19 to a resurrection of Life those who
28:20 committed the evil Deeds to a
28:23 resurrection of judgment but but the
28:25 first resurrection though the the the
28:29 first fruits is that of Christ Christ
28:31 himself 1 Corinthians 15 again says but
28:34 each in his own order Christ the first
28:36 fruits and after that those who are
28:39 Christ at his coming then comes the end
28:41 when he hands over the kingdom to the to
28:43 God to the God and father when he has
28:45 abolished all Rule and all authority and
28:47 all power for he must Reign until he has
28:51 put all his enemies under his feet or
28:54 Acts 26 says therefore having obtained
28:56 help from God of this day I stand Here
28:58 bearing witness both to small and great
28:59 stating nothing but what the prophets
29:02 and Moses said was going to take place
29:04 that Christ was to suffer and that as
29:06 first of the Resurrection from the dead
29:09 there's that first fruit idea again he
29:11 was going to Proclaim light both to the
29:14 Jewish people and to the Gentiles now in
29:17 what sense was Jesus's resurrection the
29:20 first as it says here in Acts and also
29:22 over in 1 Corinthians well the word
29:24 could mean in in some contexts
29:27 chronologically first but in in the
29:28 context of the overall
29:30 New Testament witness what would be more
29:32 likely is that's this is referring to to
29:35 First in prominence or or first in
29:37 preeminence we have to remember as we
29:38 look at the whole of the old and the New
29:40 Testament there were other individuals
29:43 who died who and who came back to life
29:45 both in the old and the New Testaments
29:47 there there's the Widow of this there's
29:50 the son of the Widow of zarapa in First
29:54 Kings 17 the shite's son in 2 Kings 4
29:57 gyrus his daughter in Mark chapter 5
30:00 Tabitha in Acts chapter 9 udcus in Acts
30:04 chapter 20 Lazarus in John
30:06 11 but each ultimately then had to go
30:09 face death all over again did they not
30:12 yes they did none of those who Rose none
30:14 of those who came back to life none of
30:16 those who were quickened had a total
30:19 triumph over death now every single one
30:21 of those individuals I just mentioned
30:23 would die again and none of those
30:25 individuals received a a glorified
30:27 Resurrection body the way that Christ
30:30 did no no Christ who is preeminent over
30:32 all things as we saw last year in our
30:35 study of Colossians is also preeminent
30:37 in his death and preeminent in his
30:39 resurrection he is the only one to have
30:49 earlier
30:53 because Jesus rose from the grave
30:54 because he was
30:56 resurrected we know that we will one day
30:58 be too
31:01 1 Corinthians 6:14 now God has not only
31:04 raised the Lord but will also raise us
31:08 up through his power 2 Corinthians
31:10 4:13 but having the same Spirit of Faith
31:12 according to what is written I believe
31:15 therefore I spoke we also believe
31:18 therefore we also speak knowing that he
31:20 who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us
31:24 also with Jesus and will present us with
31:26 you I hope you hear me if especially if
31:28 you're newer to church or newer to our
31:30 study here or just haven't heard some of
31:31 these truths
31:35 before if we have put our faith in Jesus
31:39 Christ Our ultimate hope is not just
31:42 that we'll go to heaven and live in some
31:45 sort of ethereal float around on the
31:48 clouds and pass through walls sort of
31:51 experience that's not the ultimate hope
31:54 no Our Hope and our confidence is that
31:57 one day we will be given a new body a
32:01 physical body a glorified body not one
32:02 like this one that falls apart and
32:03 breaks down and the eyes go bad and
32:06 everything else but a perfect body at
32:09 our own Resurrection that's our ultimate
32:14 in-game hope John Kennedy not that one
32:17 said the resurrection of Christ is not
32:20 only a prophecy of our Resurrection but
32:23 it's guarantee it's Earnest and pledge
32:25 its first fruits and it is the
32:27 resurrection of Jesus Christ that
32:29 guarante that every believer again will
32:32 one day be raised from the dead Romans
32:34 8:11 but if the spirit of him who raised
32:37 Jesus from the dead dwells in you he who
32:39 raised Christ Jesus from the dead will
32:41 also give life to your mortal bodies
32:43 through his Spirit who dwells in you
32:45 Philippians 3 our citizenship is in
32:48 heaven from which also we eagerly await
32:50 for wait for a savior the Lord Jesus
32:52 Christ who will transform the body of
32:54 our humble State into Conformity with
32:56 the body of His Glory by his working
32:58 through which he is able to even even
33:00 subject all things to
33:03 himself now we know that 1 Corinthians
33:05 15 could have gone about this by just
33:07 exting first 1 Corinthians 15 but
33:09 there's so much to cover but we know
33:12 that 1 Corinthians 15 gives us the most
33:14 expansive treatment of this subject of
33:16 of the believer's Future Hope and the
33:18 believer's future Resurrection Paul lays
33:20 out there in 1 Corinthians 15 not only
33:24 Our Hope in Jesus's resurrection and its
33:26 centrality to the message of the Gospel
33:29 but it also lays out Our Hope in our
33:31 Resurrection which is anchored in the
33:35 fact that Jesus himself Rose from the
33:39 grave addressing that passage 1
33:41 Corinthians 15 note this Charles
33:43 Feinberg notes that the the fact to be
33:46 born in mind is that Paul was not trying
33:49 to argue in 1 Corinthians 15 the
33:52 resurrection of Christ that was taken
33:53 for granted among the Believers to whom
33:56 he was writing instead he was defending
33:58 the resurrection of Christian s which
34:01 some at the church in Corinth were
34:04 denying Paul proceeding on the basis of
34:06 the resurrection of Christ and its
34:07 apparent implications for those who are
34:10 in him pointed out that the resurrection
34:13 of Believers is certain and
34:16 secure and again that is our hope is it
34:19 not not only that we're saved though we
34:21 are if we put our faith in Christ not
34:23 only that we're forgiven though we are
34:25 if we put our faith in Christ but that
34:27 we are going on to God's Eternal King
34:31 Kingdom a physical Kingdom where where
34:33 we will having put off the old will put
34:35 on the new living forever and worshiping
34:38 God forever in these new physical glorified
34:43 bodies Point number
34:45 six we're going to consider now the
34:47 prominence of the resurrection and by
34:50 that I mean um the importance of the
34:52 Resurrection in terms of the amount of
34:54 attention that's given throughout the
34:56 New Testament uh for instance the
34:59 apostles in order to to become Apostles
35:01 had to be eyewitnesses of of Christ and
35:04 his resurrected condition we see that in
35:06 Acts one here uh therefore it is
35:07 necessary that of the men who have
35:08 accompanied us all the time that the
35:11 Lord Jesus went in and out went in and
35:13 out Among Us beginning with the baptism
35:15 of John until the day that he was taken
35:17 up from us one of these must become a
35:20 witness with us of his resurrection and
35:22 they knew this was a requirement which
35:24 is why John would say things like this
35:26 other Apostles said things like this as
35:29 well this is the disciple who is bearing
35:31 witness to these things and wrote these
35:33 things and we know that his witness is
35:36 true the witness the eyewitness idea and
35:38 in giving their testimony as T notes
35:41 Here the apostles could not have had any
35:43 ulterior motive for proclaiming so
35:45 stupendous of fact they proclaimed
35:47 Christ's Resurrection at the risk of
35:49 their lives the disbelieving disciples
35:51 believed when they saw the Risen Christ
35:53 and became
35:55 indefatigable Heralds of the Resurrection
35:58 Resurrection
35:59 the prominence of the Resurrection is
36:00 also displayed and how often it's
36:02 mentioned in the scriptures and we've
36:04 gone through several specific examples
36:06 already but the resurrection is of
36:09 course prominently recorded in all four
36:12 gospels Matthew Mark Luke and John all
36:13 all four gospels if you put them all
36:16 together you see a very clear story of
36:18 an empty tomb and then the Lord's
36:20 post-resurrection appearances in bodily
36:22 form and then his exhortations
36:24 post-resurrection to his disciples and
36:28 then his eventual Ascension into heaven
36:29 then beyond the
36:32 gospels there's the book of Acts where
36:34 again the resurrection of of the Lord is
36:37 is featured prominently here's Peter's second
36:38 second
36:40 sermon uh following the the sermon at
36:42 Pentecost he says you denied the holy
36:43 and righteous one and asked for a murder
36:45 to be granted to you but put to death
36:47 the author of Life whom God raised from
36:50 the dead a fact to which we Are
36:53 Witnesses and it continued on as the
36:55 witness of Christ and and what he was
36:58 doing expanded throughout Jerusalem acts
37:00 4 and with great power the apostles were
37:02 bearing witness to the resurrection of
37:04 the Lord Jesus and great grace was upon
37:07 them all here's Peter's testimony to to
37:09 Cornelius he says God raised him up on
37:11 the third day and granted that he appear
37:13 not to all the people but to Witnesses
37:15 who were chosen beforehand by God that
37:18 is to us and who ate and drank with him
37:20 after he arose from the dead it was
37:23 brought up at Paul's preaching here at
37:26 Antioch God raised him from the dead and
37:27 for many days he appeared to those who
37:29 came up with him From Galilee to
37:31 Jerusalem the very ones who are now his
37:33 witnesses to the people it came up at
37:36 Paul's preaching at Athens therefore
37:38 having overlooked the times of ignorance
37:39 God is now commanding men that everyone
37:42 everywhere should repent because he has
37:44 fixed a day in which he will judge the
37:46 world in righteousness through a man
37:47 whom he determined having furnished
37:50 proof to All by raising him from the
37:52 dead and then here's Paul's testimony
37:55 before the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem but
37:56 knowing that one group were Sadducees
37:58 and the other Pharisees Paul began
38:01 crying out in the Sanhedrin Brothers I
38:03 am a Pharisee a son of Pharisees I am on
38:05 trial for the hope and resurrection of the
38:06 the
38:09 dead last one here in Acts Paul's
38:12 defense before agria I stand Here
38:13 bearing witness both the small and great
38:15 stating nothing but what the prophets
38:17 and Moses said was going to take place
38:19 that the Christ was to suffer and that
38:20 as first of the Resurrection from the
38:23 dead he was going to Proclaim light both
38:25 to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles
38:28 and of course we don't have time now but
38:29 you go through every single one of those
38:32 Epistles and you see references to the
38:35 resurrection over and over and over
38:37 we've got two more points to cover two
38:39 more Blanks on your worksheet here's
38:42 number seven the purposes of the
38:45 Resurrection under this heading we're
38:46 going to explore some of what the scriptures
38:47 scriptures
38:50 teach about the resurrection and how it
38:54 ties into our position before God and
38:56 specifically to to our
38:59 Salvation let begin begin with belief in
39:02 the the resurrection is a a bare minimum
39:05 truth that a person must trust and
39:07 believe in in order to be saved Romans
39:09 10:9 if you confess with your mouth
39:11 Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart
39:13 that God raised him from the dead you
39:15 will be saved and that by the way is not
39:17 some some bald confession that's being
39:20 referred to here this is not merely
39:22 believing in the sense that you believe
39:24 that Montpelier is the capital of
39:26 Vermont it's not just intellectual
39:28 Ascent no this is confessing you see it
39:32 here Jesus as Lord which means
39:33 inherently that it's recognizing that
39:35 you are
39:38 not it's recognizing our need to be
39:40 saved look at the last word there which
39:42 stems from the the recognition that
39:45 without being saved we stand under God's
39:47 judgment and it's recognizing that
39:49 because he was brought to life we can be
39:51 brought to life and rendered free in
39:54 Christ but not free the way the world
39:56 thinks of free like like living the way
39:57 you want to live after you make your
39:59 profession of faith in him but rather
40:02 free from the shackles of sin which once
40:04 weighed you down and now free to put on
40:08 his yoke which is gentle and
40:12 light a person though only receives as
40:14 we see here the benefits of genuine
40:16 saving faith if they have True Heart
40:18 level belief at the most fundamental
40:21 level that God truly did raise him
40:24 raised Jesus from the
40:26 dead that's 1 Corinthians 15 in a nutshell
40:27 nutshell
40:29 now I make known to you Brothers The
40:31 Gospel which I proclaimed as good news
40:33 to you which also you received in which
40:35 also you stand by which also you are
40:37 saved if you hold fast the word which I
40:39 proclaimed to you as good news unless
40:42 you believed for nothing for I delivered
40:44 to you as a first importance what I also
40:47 received that Christ died for our sins
40:49 according to the scriptures and that he
40:51 was buried and that he was raised on the
40:55 third day according to the scriptures so
40:58 belief in the res res rection the
41:01 resurrection of Jesus Christ must underg
41:03 any true profession of faith we also
41:05 know that belief in the resurrection is
41:07 at the heart of the believer's
41:10 justification that is God's declaring
41:12 him righteous in his sight that's Romans
41:14 4:25 he who is delivered over on account
41:17 of our transgressions and was raised on
41:20 account of our justification in other
41:24 words only through a risen Christ can we
41:27 be deemed Justified before God which we
41:29 see summarized in these next couple of
41:32 quotes mun again says present day
41:35 Believers in the resurrected Christ that
41:37 is those who exercise faith in the
41:40 Divine promises as did Abraham of old
41:42 are justified by being given a standing
41:45 in righteousness and declared and
41:48 treated as such Forever by a holy God
41:50 John Murray says Jesus was delivered up
41:53 in order to atone for our sins and was
41:55 raised in order that we might be
41:58 justified Charles Feinberg notes that
42:00 Jesus's resurrection guarantees the
42:02 believer's justification the
42:04 resurrection of Christ proves Beyond a
42:07 doubt that God has accepted his death
42:09 for humankind as the full satisfaction
42:12 of his claims for human justification
42:14 and one more from
42:16 fineberg just as Christ was delivered up
42:18 on account of people's offenses because
42:20 they had grievously offended the
42:23 Holiness of God just so he was raised to
42:25 show that his death had fully and
42:27 completely availed for believers and
42:29 that now they stand in the presence of
42:32 God the Father Justified from all things
42:35 so the resurrection plays a role in our
42:37 justification and our Resurrection we're
42:40 going to see next plays a role in our
42:43 regeneration uh by the Holy Spirit which
42:45 is just really just another facet of the
42:47 whole entire salvation transaction if
42:49 you want to call it that where we go
42:51 from Darkness to light and from Death To
42:54 Life 1 Peter 1 blessed be the God and
42:56 father of our Lord Jesus Christ who
42:58 according to his great Mercy has caused
43:00 us to be born again that's regeneration
43:03 language to a Living Hope through the
43:05 resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
43:07 dead so the resurrection is linked to our
43:08 our
43:10 justification the resurrection is linked
43:13 to our regeneration now we're going to
43:16 see the resurrection is linked to our
43:20 sanctification Romans 6 sanctification
43:21 growth as
43:24 Believers therefore we were buried with
43:26 him through baptism into death so that
43:28 as Christ was raised from the dead
43:30 through the glory of the father so we
43:33 too might walk in newness of life for if
43:35 we had become United with him in the
43:37 likeness of his death certainly we shall
43:38 also be in the likeness of his
43:40 resurrection knowing this that our old
43:42 man was crucified with him in order that
43:45 our body of sin might be done away with
43:47 so that we would no longer be slaves to
43:49 sin this is sanctification
43:52 language and fineberg again picks up on
43:56 that he says through the death of Christ
43:58 positional sanctification that just
44:01 means salvation was affected for all
44:04 believers through the resurrection
44:07 experimental sanctification was made
44:08 possible that's a way of that's how we
44:10 would describe sanctification growing in
44:13 Christ in his death Christ died not only
44:17 for sin but he died to sin as well he
44:19 made it possible for believers to have
44:21 dominion over the power of
44:25 sin so on account of Our Risen Lord and
44:27 Savior who said I am the res
44:30 resurrection and the life we receive
44:33 spiritual sustenance through the same
44:36 power who raised Jesus from the dead of
44:38 the one who raised Jesus from the dead
44:40 we who have believed Upon Jesus Christ
44:42 have been given the ability to to live
44:46 for him and serve him and love him if
44:48 anyone's in Christ he's a new creation
44:50 the old things passed away behold new
44:54 things have come Galatians 2:20 I've
44:55 been crucified with Christ and is no
44:58 longer I who live but Christ who lives
45:00 in me and the life which I now live in
45:02 the flesh I live by faith in the Son of
45:06 God who loved me and gave himself up for
45:09 me mckune again notes that spiritual
45:11 life and the hope it entails are
45:13 possible because Christ validated his
45:16 atoning work against sin which resulted
45:19 in his death by triumphantly raising
45:22 rising from the dead Resurrection Life
45:24 being made alive in Christ acrs to the
45:27 Christian because he has by Faith been
45:30 identified with Christ in his death and
45:32 Resurrection Christ's victory over sin
45:36 and death becomes the Believers as
45:38 well and then last one under this
45:41 heading of the purposes of the
45:43 Resurrection is that through our Lord's
45:47 Resurrection not only has Christ been
45:50 exalted which he has we see that here in
45:53 Ephesians 1 19- 21 I won't read the
45:57 whole thing but in addition to that the
46:01 of Jesus Christ is seen by God as being
46:04 there with Christ in his Resurrection
46:06 being raised up with him and being given
46:08 an exalted position in the heavenlies
46:12 with Christ that's Ephesians 2 but God
46:14 being rich in Mercy because of his great
46:16 love with which he loved us even when we
46:19 were dead in our transgressions made us
46:22 alive together with Christ by Grace you
46:24 have been saved and raised us up with
46:26 him and seated us with him in the
46:30 Heavenly places in Christ Jesus the
46:33 resurrection of Jesus Christ then is
46:35 tied directly in with our position
46:37 before God in our
46:39 Salvation in our
46:43 sanctification and one day in our our
46:46 glorification that brings us to our
46:48 eighth and final point this evening
46:52 which is the problem of no
46:55 Resurrection the problem of no
46:59 Resurrection in words what if Jesus
47:02 never Rose what if he didn't rise what
47:05 if he didn't what if he wasn't
47:07 resurrected what would the consequences
47:09 what would the Fallout be if Jesus
47:11 actually didn't rise from the grave if
47:14 his his bones are buried somewhere in
47:18 the Holy Land even today well first his
47:19 credibility would be completely
47:22 shot trust in his word and Trust in his
47:24 promises would be completely
47:26 eroded I mean think about it if he was
47:28 wrong about his his own Resurrection why
47:30 would we give any weight or authority to
47:32 any one of his teachings on on topics
47:35 like God or mankind or sin or judgment
47:37 or the need to to repent why why would
47:39 we any longer accept or Embrace even his
47:43 claims to be God remember his his
47:45 resurrection is linked to his
47:49 deity Romans 1:4 he's designated as the
47:51 Son of God in power according to the
47:53 spirit of Holiness by the resurrection
47:55 from the dead he's designated as the Son
47:58 of God by the resurrection from the dead
48:00 in other words if Jesus didn't actually
48:02 rise from the grave we would have no
48:05 reason to think of him as anything more
48:09 than a mere man A A A wise man but
48:12 ultimately an incorrect man a flawed man
48:16 a mere man not only that if Jesus didn't
48:19 actually rise from the grave uh the
48:20 gospel would be
48:22 defanged the the message of the Cross
48:24 would be totally without power and the
48:26 cross would ultimately be reduced to
48:28 this this tragic
48:31 failure 1 Corinthians 15:17 if Christ
48:33 has not been raised your faith is
48:36 worthless you were still in your
48:39 sins did you catch that with without a
48:40 resurrection there would be no
48:43 forgiveness of sins because without a
48:46 resurrection it means that Christ wasn't
48:49 who he claimed to be he wasn't truly God
48:51 and if he wasn't truly God that means he
48:53 was an inadequate substitute for the
48:55 sins of the world and he was unable to
48:58 pay the price for our
49:01 Redemption and further if Christ did not
49:03 rise bodily from the grave Our Hope
49:06 again of our own future Resurrection is
49:09 just a sad illusion it's this pitiful
49:12 Mirage if Jesus's body actually decayed
49:14 in some tomb on the outskirts of
49:17 Jerusalem if any trace of his bones were
49:19 ever discovered we would still be dead
49:21 in our sins and enslaved to the power of
49:24 death and if that's the case we are of
49:27 all men most to be pied
49:28 Floyd Berman
49:31 notes if he had not risen then his death
49:33 would be of no value in Saving Sinners
49:37 and the gospel would be ineffective a
49:44 save but Jesus's body we know will never be
49:45 be
49:48 found and not because of the Ingenuity
49:50 or the the Zeal of some Roman soldiers
49:53 or or or Jewish authorities not because
49:54 they dispensed of it or they moved it or
49:57 they got rid of it but rather because we
50:00 know without a doubt that Christ was
50:02 raised and we know that because right
50:05 after 1 Corinthians 159 which speaks of
50:07 the hopelessness and the despair of a
50:11 world in which Christ didn't rise the
50:14 every next verse says but now Christ has
50:16 been raised from the
50:19 dead and there lies our hope
50:22 hope
50:25 amen I said there lies our hope
50:28 amen I mean that's it I mean what are we
50:30 doing here if that I can't get an amen
50:33 out of that I mean that's there lies our
50:37 hope amen amen all right now we're
50:48 dead earlier this week um I visited with
50:50 a a dear member of our church it was it
50:52 wasn't dick Bert but thank you Mike for your
50:53 your
50:56 wonderful uh words and tribute for dick
50:57 it wasn't was n dick who I visited with
51:01 earlier this week but um I did me visit
51:04 with a member who's in Decline and his
51:07 uh his Earthly tent is giving away and
51:09 he's ready for the new one and he's
51:12 ready to meet the Lord and he has the
51:14 hope that we're talking about and it was
51:17 such a joy to sit with him because he's
51:19 got you know he's got oxygen in and he's
51:27 slowly but the joy is there
51:28 the joy is there not withstanding the
51:31 the discomfort he's going through um
51:33 even if it's a little harder to to move
51:34 and and
51:37 breathe the joy is is in that man and it
51:39 is something truly to
51:43 behold and it all ties back to that
51:46 man's Resurrection
51:50 hope he knows that the Lord rose he
51:53 knows that he is going to meet that
51:55 Risen Lord he knows he has been
51:58 transformed from Philippians 3:10 by the
52:04 Resurrection as I was uh driving away
52:06 from that man's house this
52:09 week I I couldn't help but think of a
52:10 quote I've read in different settings at
52:13 different times it's a quote from DL
52:20 evangelist he said someday you will read
52:28 dead don't you believe a word of
52:32 it at that moment I shall be more alive
52:33 than I am
52:37 now that which is born of the spirit
52:39 will live forever
52:41 forever
52:44 amen praise the Lord for his death
52:46 praise the Lord for his
52:49 resurrection praise the Lord for our
52:52 hope God thank you for this time this evening
52:58 God I know these studies on Sunday
53:00 nights in the summer can feel like we're
53:02 sitting in a classroom but I
53:05 do hope and trust that we all understand
53:09 that this is reality this is not just
53:11 scribbling down verses this is preparing for
53:13 for
53:16 Glory and God we have that glorious hope
53:18 we have that promise that we will one
53:21 day be with you the promise that dick
53:23 had and held to that he is rejoicing in
53:27 in the presence of his savior right now
53:28 the hope that the other brother that I
53:32 just mentioned is is walking in right
53:34 now God if we have believed upon the
53:36 name of Jesus all because of your great
53:38 love for us and preparing a way for us
53:40 and making a way for
53:42 us we can have this
53:45 hope we can have the hope not only that
53:47 Jesus died which he did and not only
53:49 that Jesus rose which he did and that
53:52 our sins can be forgiven which they
53:54 are but we know that we will one day
53:57 also rise
53:58 and we will one day be given these
54:00 perfect glorified resurrected bodies
54:03 that are suitable and fit for worshiping
54:06 you forever in glory oh what a day that
54:10 will be and we anticipate it with with
54:14 joy so God I do pray that these studies
54:15 would really get down to the heart of
54:18 everybody here for we who believed upon
54:20 the name of Christ I pray these studies
54:22 would just just grow us in our
54:26 anticipation of being with you forever
54:28 and for anyone here who doesn't know you
54:30 I pray that they'd be asking the hard
54:31 questions and doing some soul searching
54:35 and reaching out to somebody here to
54:37 ask like the Ethiopian unic what must I
54:39 do to be
54:41 saved God I pray that you would do a
54:44 good work in our midst this week May our
54:46 our sights and our gaze be fixed on you
