0:14 hey guys Dr will here from Miami spine
0:16 and performance today I'm going to do a
0:18 special video for you guys I'm going to
0:20 talk about Dynamic neuromuscular
0:23 stabilization DNS so for those of you
0:24 that have seen my YouTube channel before
0:26 you've seen little bits and pieces of
0:29 these DNS exercise and positions and
0:30 certainly if you're a patient of mine
0:33 you've been exposed to DNS but I've been
0:34 getting a lot of new patients and a lot
0:37 of interest from the community thanks to
0:39 Dr Peter attia's book and the work he's
0:42 done with Michael rantala and Diana so I
0:43 wanted to put a video out for you guys
0:45 kind of explaining what DNS is because a
0:47 lot of people that are calling my office
0:49 and they're excited about DNS they're
0:50 not really sure what it is right they
0:53 know that it's a it's kind of a style of
0:55 training and they know that it helps the
0:56 body move better and they know there's
0:58 something to do with babies so I want to
1:00 give you guys just a short video to kind
1:03 of explain what DNS is and how I use DNS
1:05 in my practice here at Miami spider before
1:06 before
1:08 so Dynamic neuromuscular stabilization
1:12 is based on what's called developmental
1:14 Kinesiology okay and don't let that word
1:17 overwhelm you I know it's a lot of uh
1:18 it's a lot of letters but basically what
1:21 that means is it's based on the way that
1:23 we move as a baby specifically between
1:26 three months and 13 months right so from
1:27 the time we kind of first pop our head
1:30 up until we're actually standing that's
1:32 kind of the developmental sequence that
1:35 we go through right and as the baby kind
1:37 of Pops their head up starts to turn
1:40 starts to roll starts to crawl goes from
1:42 crawling to kind of half standing and
1:44 then all the way up to standing that's
1:46 really when the brain and the body are
1:48 learning how to move and coordinate
1:50 muscles right if you just look at
1:52 Anatomy book you'll see okay the PEC
1:55 does this the lad does this the
1:58 abdominis does this but really our
2:00 muscles work together to form movement
2:02 patterns right so if I go and I touch
2:04 the corner of that table I'm using a
2:06 whole bunch of muscles together and
2:08 there there has to be a motor program in
2:11 my brain that's showing me how to do
2:13 that so that I I'm able to hit my target
2:16 consistently every time right and that's
2:18 based upon developmental Kinesiology the
2:20 way that I learned initially how to
2:22 coordinate my muscles together and how
2:24 to develop good posture and how to
2:27 breathe properly occurred when I was an infant
2:28 infant
2:31 so the idea behind DNS is that as time
2:33 goes on through our lives whether you're
2:36 15 years old whether you're 35 whether
2:39 you're 65 eventually these kind of
2:41 perfect movement patterns and perfectly
2:43 even muscle tone and ideal breathing and
2:46 ideal posture starts to fade away has
2:48 different life stresses come at us right
2:49 we're in a society where we're on our
2:52 phone all the time stress is very high
2:55 sleep is low hydration is low diet is
2:58 poor work is sedentary sometimes you
3:00 know at this point half the country is
3:02 basically sedentary right meaning
3:04 they're not doing much exercise they're
3:05 certainly not stretching mobilizing
3:06 strengthening the things that they
3:08 should be now I know that you guys
3:10 watching this video probably are not
3:11 part of that group you guys are probably
3:13 the ones that are very active and you're
3:15 trying to optimize your movement that's
3:17 why you're reading Dr Tia's book and
3:19 that's why we're interested in DNS so
3:21 for you guys more so what happens is we
3:24 do CrossFit we do weightlifting we play
3:26 basketball we play tennis we dance and
3:27 all those different activities put
3:29 different stresses on the body that
3:32 cause imbalance okay so what we do with
3:34 DNS and what I do as a certified
3:37 practitioner is I put people through
3:39 these developmental sequences again as
3:40 adults right so you can see here there's
3:42 a baby in three months and then there's
3:44 an adult woman in the room
3:46 and so we actually use those positions
3:49 to re-teach the body how to move
3:51 optimally and that starts with good
3:52 breathing so those of you that have done
3:55 DNS with me we start with proper
3:57 respiration if we're not breathing
3:58 properly we're not breathing through our
4:00 abdomen we're not going to be able to
4:02 create the environment for optimal
4:04 movement once the breath is good and the
4:06 breathing is good then we start to take
4:08 you through the positions
4:10 now what this does is it's different
4:12 from let's say training the rotator cuff
4:15 by doing a banded rotator cuff exercise
4:16 there's nothing wrong with doing an
4:18 exercise like that but sometimes for
4:20 people we need to actually put them back
4:22 into the developmental position so the
4:25 body can learn how to use the rotator
4:26 cuff the way that it learned years ago
4:29 all in all of our brains the motor
4:31 program is there to move optimally we
4:33 just have to kind of jiggle the key a
4:34 little bit so we can actually unlock it
4:37 and in my experience DNS is one of the
4:39 best ways to unlock that optimal
4:41 movement pattern that's within all of us
4:43 the great thing about DNS is it can be
4:46 used in complement with Chiropractic
4:47 adjusting it can be used with in
4:49 complement with soft tissue therapy it
4:51 can be used to complement a regular
4:53 weight lifting energy right this isn't
4:54 to say you should stop what you're doing
4:57 and only do DNS DNS is meant to
4:59 complement all these other things so for
5:00 patients that come into my office
5:03 typically they'll come in with you know
5:04 maybe they have some shoulder pain maybe
5:06 they have a back issue so I'll actually
5:08 hand select the positions that I'll use
5:10 with them and the way that we move
5:12 through the position in order to
5:14 strengthen that specific joint
5:18 so in summary what we do with DNS is we
5:20 use these developmental positions to
5:23 help you breathe optimally help
5:25 reinforce optimal posture normalize
5:27 muscle tone and improve movement
5:30 efficiency so if that sounds good to you
5:31 I'm Dr Will from Miami spine and
