2:10 sociologists have been studying bullying
2:12 for decades they just don't call it
2:13 bully and they've always called the
2:15 dominance behavior that it's other
2:17 people trying to overpower others and
2:19 it's just like the animal kingdom
2:21 you know the alpha male mentality that's
2:23 what's happening on campus and so when
2:25 we understand it in terms of dominance
2:27 behavior people trying to have power
2:30 over another that helps us understand
2:32 what to do about bullying when we really
2:34 understand what it is all the bullying
2:37 experts agree on one thing that bullying
2:40 is an imbalance of power that someone's
2:42 trying to have power over you they want
2:45 to see you lose and they want to win you
2:47 see the experts say it's an imbalance of
2:50 power let me put it this way let's say a
2:52 bully says they hate your guts I hate
2:53 your guts
2:57 if you respond out of anger shame the
3:03 bully loves that never do you don't care
3:09 that's the point stupid you see the more
3:13 upset you get the more angry you get the
3:16 more fun they have but what would happen
3:18 if we were resilient everybody say
3:21 resilient what if we were emotionally
3:24 strong everybody say strong what if we
3:25 were mentally tough everybody say tough
3:29 then no matter what the hater says you
3:32 wouldn't care I hate your guts that's nice
3:34 nice
3:39 you smell like body odor you're nasty
3:42 thanks for the information
3:46 your face is ugly you have a face of an
3:51 angel three cheeks okay maybe that was
3:55 too far but how awesome would it be if
3:58 you the victim of relentless teasing and
4:01 taunting or bullying decided to not get
4:04 upset to have tough skin to allow the
4:07 hateful mean words of others bounce
4:09 right off you and not care what the
4:12 other person says if if you explain to
4:14 students that bullying is nothing more
4:16 than a game about winning and losing and
4:19 that the way that they can win is by not
4:21 getting upset and the bully will lose
4:24 and when people lose they don't like
4:25 playing the game so they'll leave you
4:28 alone when you explain that to a student
4:30 it's simple it's concrete it's not
4:32 abstract it's not ethereal it's not
4:34 complex it's simple
4:36 don't get upset no matter what they say
4:40 I'm not saying it's easy but in logic
4:42 it's very simple now it's important to
4:45 know this when I say boolean I'm only
4:47 talking about when someone's hurting
4:50 your feelings if you can understand
4:51 bullying in terms of someone hurting
4:53 your feelings then the solution is very
4:56 simple but some people think bullying is
4:58 more complex than hurting your feelings
5:02 they think bullying is like violence let
5:04 me make it very clear when I say
5:05 bullying I'm not talking about when
5:08 someone punches your face I actually
5:10 believe that you know you should get
5:12 upset if someone punches your face
5:13 that's not bullying that's called
5:15 assault and battery okay don't just
5:23 no dude if someone straight-up punches
5:25 your face get upset why cuz that's a
5:29 crime that's not bullying it's a crime
5:32 and crime should be punished and if you
5:33 ever feel like your life is in danger
5:36 you should be protected you should reach
5:38 out for help [Music]
