0:00 [Music]
0:01 beginning this
0:06 evening we want to be looking at eight
0:09 crisis experiences in the Earthly life
0:11 of Our
0:14 Lord I'm calling these experiences the
0:17 Milestones with the
0:19 master I think it's important that you
0:23 and I have our christology
0:25 straight and we're going to be looking
0:28 at these eight experiences his
0:32 birth his b baptism his
0:35 temptation his
0:39 Transfiguration his presentation as
0:41 king his
0:45 death his resurrection and his
0:48 Ascension and our purpose is going to be
0:51 to discover all that we can for our own
0:54 Hearts about the person and the work of
0:57 the Lord Jesus
1:00 Christ if we are confused about Jesus
1:04 Christ in his person and in his
1:06 work we're going to be confused about
1:09 the whole scheme of
1:12 Salvation if we don't understand who he
1:14 is and what he did we're not going to
1:16 know what he did for us and how we can
1:20 have it and how we can enjoy it and live
1:24 it we begin in Hebrews because our theme
1:27 tonight is the birth of the Lord Jesus
1:29 Christ we're not going to turn to
1:31 Matthew Matthew or
1:34 Luke these give the historic events
1:36 we're going to look at Hebrews which
1:38 gives us the spiritual
1:42 meaning behind the historic facts are
1:44 the spiritual
1:46 truths and you would be amazed at how
1:48 much the book of Hebrews has to say
1:51 about the body the physical body of the
1:52 Lord Jesus
1:55 Christ Hebrews chapter
1:58 10 I'm going to read through Verse 18 a
2:02 long Passage but a very important
2:06 one for the law having a shadow of good
2:09 things to come and not the very image of
2:12 those things can never with those
2:16 sacrifices which they offered Year bye
2:21 continually make those who came to it
2:23 perfect for then would they not have
2:24 ceased to be
2:27 offered because the worshippers once
2:30 purged should have no more consciousness of
2:32 of
2:35 sins but in those sacrifices there is a
2:39 remembrance again made of sins every
2:41 year for it is not possible that the
2:43 blood of bulls and of goats should take away
2:44 away
2:49 sins wherefore when he cometh into the
2:53 world he Seth sacrifice and offering
2:56 thou wouldest not but a body hast thou
3:00 prepared me in burnt offerings and
3:03 sacrifices for sin thou Hast had no
3:07 pleasure then said I lo I come in the
3:10 volume of the book it is written of me
3:13 to do thy will oh
3:16 God above when he said sacrifice and
3:19 offering and burnt offerings and
3:22 offering for sin thou wouldest not
3:24 neither had pleasure in them which are
3:27 offered by the law then said he lo I
3:30 come to do thy will oh God
3:32 he taketh away the
3:35 first that he may establish the
3:38 second by which will we are Sanctified
3:41 through the offering of the body of
3:44 Jesus Christ once for
3:47 all and every priest standeth daily
3:49 ministering and offering the same
3:52 sacrifices which can never take away
3:56 sins but this man after he had offered
4:00 one sacrifice for sins forever sat down
4:03 on the right hand of God from henceforth
4:06 expecting till his enemies be made his foot
4:07 foot
4:10 stol for by one offering he hath
4:14 perfected forever them that are
4:17 Sanctified and the Holy Spirit also is a
4:21 witness to us for after he had said
4:23 before this is the Covenant that I will
4:25 make with them after those days sayth
4:29 the Lord I will put my laws into their hearts
4:30 hearts
4:33 and in their minds will I write them and
4:35 their sins and iniquities will I
4:37 remember no
4:41 more now where remission of these
4:46 is there is no more offering for
4:48 sin gracious
4:52 father as we consider this tremendous
4:55 truth of the
4:58 Incarnation Grant by your spirit that we
5:02 will understand and what you have for
5:05 us great is the mystery of
5:10 godliness God was manifest In the
5:14 Flesh and father this is far beyond
5:18 us we need the holy spirit that we might
5:21 not only understand but
5:25 appropriate and so teach us we pray in
5:33 everything that our Lord Jesus Christ
5:38 did on Earth depended upon his
5:40 birth this was the
5:44 beginning we have here the remarkable
5:48 account of the son speaking to the
5:51 father as he comes into the
5:54 world now we aren't going to pinpoint
5:56 the time when this
6:00 happened but we have God the son coming
6:03 in a human body and saying to God the
6:07 father as he came into the world lo I
6:11 come to do thy will oh
6:14 God Jesus Christ the son of God took
6:17 upon himself a human
6:21 body and the question we're asking is
6:24 why why did Jesus Christ take upon
6:27 himself a human
6:29 body and the answer to that is that he
6:32 might fulfill certain Divine purposes lo
6:36 I come to do thy will oh God God the
6:39 father had certain Divine purposes for
6:42 God the son to fulfill and he could only
6:46 fulfill them in a human
6:49 body now what are these purposes the
6:51 book of Hebrews suggests to us that
6:54 there are at least four purposes that
6:56 our Lord Jesus Christ
6:59 fulfilled by taking upon himself a human
7:01 body purpose number
7:03 one he revealed
7:05 revealed
7:09 God now God as to his nature is
7:12 invisible in one of our favorite worship
7:15 hymns we sing Immortal invisible God
7:19 only wise a text that is taken directly
7:22 from the word of God now unto the king Immortal
7:24 Immortal
7:26 invisible God is
7:30 spirit and because God is Spirit he is
7:32 invisible to the human
7:36 eye when Jesus Christ wanted to reveal
7:40 God to man it was necessary for him to
7:44 come on the level of man which meant he
7:46 had to become
7:49 man many years ago I remember hearing an
7:51 intervarsity speaker talking about the
7:54 Incarnation using the familiar
7:56 illustration of
7:59 insects I'm not crazy about insects is
8:01 why I stay away from picnics because I
8:03 don't like
8:07 bugs but um have you ever in a summer
8:09 season been somewhere where a group of
8:12 ants have been busy down there doing
8:14 something dragging something or
8:17 gathering something and your Shadow
8:20 Falls across them and they scatter now
8:23 you have no intention of stepping on
8:25 them you have no intention of
8:27 frightening them but they scatter and so
8:29 you stand there and you say to them look
8:31 don't run away I'm not going to hurt you
8:35 I'm not on an anti- ant Crusade just uh
8:37 they just keep on running why because
8:40 you can't communicate with ants and they
8:42 can't communicate with you the only way
8:45 you'd be able to tell these creatures
8:47 these little insects would be if you
8:49 were to get down to their level and say
8:51 now just a minute whenever you see that
8:53 shadow Don't Run Away don't be afraid
8:56 I'm not here to hurt you now this gives
8:58 us some small illustration of what our
9:01 lord Jesus had had to do now God had
9:04 been revealing himself to man in many
9:07 ways the heavens declare the glory of
9:09 God God had revealed himself to man
9:12 through his Creation in fact Hebrews
9:15 begins this way I think the book of
9:19 Hebrews Begins the greatest of any book
9:22 in the New Testament it starts off
9:27 God that's all it starts God who at
9:33 sunry times and in diverse manners
9:36 spoke God has spoken that's a tremendous
9:38 thing if I were God I wouldn't speak to
9:41 anybody the way they treat my law the
9:44 way they treat me but God has spoken now
9:47 how has he spoken he has spoken in time
9:50 pass under the fathers by the prophets
9:54 now hath in these last days spoken unto
9:57 us in his
10:01 son in other words one reason why Jesus
10:04 Christ took upon himself a body was that
10:08 he might come and be heard and be seen
10:12 so people would know what God was like
10:13 now if you'll turn back to Hebrews
10:17 chapter 10 you will notice a remarkable statement
10:18 statement
10:23 here he says lo I
10:27 come now no other baby could make that
10:29 statement Jesus Christ wasn't just
10:33 simply born he said I came into the
10:35 world you know what that means that
10:38 means he existed before he came into the
10:42 world that's why Hebrews chapter 10 says
10:46 a body hast thou prepared me in other
10:50 words our Lord Jesus Christ existed
10:54 before his birth he existed before his
10:57 mother he existed before his foster
11:00 father he existed before all
11:03 time when our Lord says I come he is
11:06 declaring his deity Jesus Christ can
11:10 reveal God because Jesus Christ is God
11:13 we go back once again to Hebrews chap 1 verse
11:14 verse
11:18 three speaking about the Lord Jesus who
11:21 being the brightness of his glory and
11:24 the express image of his person you know
11:26 what that means he is
11:30 God if I stood before you and said I am
11:32 the brightness of the glory of God you'd
11:35 shake your head and say no I am the
11:38 express image of his person you'd say
11:41 sorry you haven't seen yourself
11:45 lately but Jesus Christ could dare to
11:49 say and no one could contradict it he
11:51 that ha seen
11:54 me hath seen the
11:57 father Philip said to him show us the
12:00 father and we'll be happy Jesus said
12:03 have I been so long time with you and
12:06 yet you don't know me he that has seen
12:09 me has seen the father and so Jesus
12:13 Christ reveals God to us because he is
12:15 God now when someone comes to your front
12:19 door and denies that Jesus Christ is God
12:21 we have Hebrews chapter 10 telling us
12:25 very very clearly he came in a prepared
12:27 body now when I was born I didn't come
12:29 in a prepared body
12:31 according to the word of God there are
12:34 only four ways to get a body you better
12:36 remember these you can get a body
12:40 without a man or without a woman that's
12:44 the way Adam got his God made his body
12:47 directly or you can get a body with a
12:49 man but no woman that's the way Eve got
12:53 hers she was made from part of Adam or
12:55 you can get a body with a man and a
12:57 woman that's where Cain and Abel got
13:01 theirs the normal process of birth or
13:03 you can get a body with a woman but not
13:07 a man that's the way Jesus got his
13:09 Joseph was not the father of the Lord
13:12 Jesus Christ he was the Foster father
13:15 the legal father but not the begetter of
13:19 the Lord Jesus Christ Jesus Christ came
13:21 in a prepared body we have here the Virgin
13:22 Virgin
13:26 birth we have here that amazing Miracle
13:29 of the holy spirit of God that even
13:32 surprised and stultified
13:36 Mary Jesus came into this world in a prepared
13:37 prepared
13:41 body that he might be able to reveal God
13:45 now nobody can explain this that's why
13:48 Paul wrote great is the mystery of
13:52 godliness God was manifest in the flesh
13:54 but I am glad that this is the way it
13:56 happened it tells me that Jesus Christ
13:59 is God it tells me that I am not an
14:02 idolator when I worship Jesus Christ it
14:05 tells me that Jesus Christ is
14:09 sinless Holy harmless undefiled as you
14:11 read through the book of Hebrews over
14:13 and over again the writer talks about
14:16 the sinlessness the separateness of Jesus
14:17 Jesus
14:19 Christ he had to come into this world
14:22 with a prepared body had he come in with
14:26 our nature he would have been sinful he
14:29 came with a prepared nature conceived of
14:32 the Holy Spirit
14:35 sinless and so the first purpose that he
14:39 fulfilled was that of revealing God when
14:42 you see Jesus Christ you see God when
14:46 you hear Jesus Christ you hear
14:49 God now before I move on to the second
14:51 purpose I want to make a bit of an
14:53 application here with our old Puritan
14:56 friends used to call improving the text
14:59 it's this your Bible
15:02 becomes a new book to you when you
15:05 realize that Jesus Christ is God and reveals
15:07 reveals
15:10 God some of us can never forget in our
15:14 early Christian lives the excitement I
15:17 mean by that the real excitement of
15:20 discovering Christ in the Old
15:22 Testament many of us when we were first
15:24 Saved enjoyed reading the four gospels
15:26 we even enjoyed reading some of the
15:28 Epistles but don't ask us to read the
15:30 Old Testament starts off pretty good but
15:32 after a while you get to all those tent
15:35 pegs and all of these curtains and all
15:39 of these wars and then these prophecies
15:41 and so you flip over and you start
15:44 reading Matthew Mark Luke and John again
15:46 and then one day you discovered in the
15:49 volume of the book it is written of me
15:52 the key to the Bible is Jesus Christ his
15:56 birth his life his death his coming
15:59 again you see Jesus Christ is written in
16:03 the Old Testament he is the key to
16:05 history all of the history in the Old
16:07 Testament is preparation for his
16:10 birth when I discovered that Old
16:12 Testament history took upon a whole new
16:15 meaning for me I understood why God
16:17 chose Abraham he had to have a nation
16:20 why God chose Judah he had to have a
16:23 tribe why God chose David he had to have
16:26 a family and all of Old Testament
16:29 history begins to make sense he's coming
16:31 he's going to be born he's going to be
16:34 born and Satan's doing everything he can
16:36 to keep him from being born fouling up
16:39 the Hebrew Nation at one point in Old
16:42 Testament history one little baby boy
16:44 was all that was left in the
16:47 link of the chain of Messianic
16:50 prophecy he's the key to Old Testament
16:52 prophecy when you read the Old Testament
16:54 prophets if you take out Jesus Christ
16:58 you're reading in the dark he's the key
17:01 when you read the Old Testament
17:04 typology I used to skip over Leviticus
17:06 and exodus I mean I wasn't too
17:08 interested I couldn't build a birdhouse
17:10 why worry about a tabernacle and I
17:12 wasn't interested in I wasn't interested
17:14 in slaughtering a bunch of animals and
17:15 then one day someone said you want a
17:18 picture of Jesus Christ is that right
17:20 tell me about it and I discovered that
17:23 Jesus Christ is the key to prophecy and
17:25 history and typology he's even the key
17:26 to the
17:29 Psalms when you read the Psalms you feel
17:31 the Heart of Jesus Christ the feelings
17:34 of Jesus
17:36 Christ and so the Bible becomes a brand
17:38 new book to and you realize that all the
17:41 Old Testament is pointing to his birth
17:43 that he might reveal God in the four
17:45 gospels he does reveal God then he goes
17:47 back to heaven and leaves behind a
17:50 spiritual body to take his place to
17:52 reveal God and that we might do a good
17:54 job of it he gives us Romans through
17:56 Revelation to show us how to live that
17:59 we might reveal God Jesus Christ
18:02 glorified God in his body and you and I
18:04 should be glorifying God in our bodies
18:07 you see the world can't see God all they
18:08 can see is
18:12 us we're the only Bible they read we're
18:13 the only thing they ever see that points
18:17 to God he came to reveal God now there's
18:20 a second purpose in our Lord's coming
18:22 taking upon himself a body Hebrews
18:27 chapter 2 verses 14 and 15 he came to
18:33 for as much then as the children are
18:36 partakers of Flesh and
18:40 Blood he also himself likewise took part
18:42 of the same in other words Jesus Christ
18:45 took upon himself human nature that
18:49 through death he might destroy him that
18:52 hath the power of death that is the
18:55 devil and deliver them who through fear
19:00 of death were all their lifetime
19:03 subject to bondage in other words in
19:05 order to defeat
19:08 death he had to have a body that he
19:12 might be able to die now God cannot die
19:14 God is
19:16 eternal being Eternal he has no
19:19 beginning and no ending many of us can
19:22 recall I'm sure you do when as a child
19:24 the truth of God begin to Dawn upon you
19:26 and I remember lying in bed trying to
19:29 figure out eternity
19:32 everything that I held dear was dear to
19:34 me because I was going to lose it
19:37 someday you grow out of childhood and
19:39 maybe Mother and Dad pass away and I was
19:41 just lisening to myself all the things
19:43 that I had and they were precious to me
19:45 because they weren't going to last how
19:49 could anything be precious forever and I
19:52 would try to conceive of Eternity going
19:56 on and on and
20:00 on and you wake up with a headache
20:01 have you ever done
20:06 that it's a tremendous thing now Jesus
20:08 Christ is eternal he has no beginning
20:10 and no ending you and I are not Eternal
20:11 we've had a
20:13 beginning some of you don't want to
20:15 remember your Beginnings you stopped
20:18 counting your Beginnings but you had one
20:19 but you're never going to have an ending
20:22 we are Immortal we're going to go on
20:23 forever and another either in heaven or
20:26 in hell those who have trusted Christ as
20:28 their savior eternity in heaven those
20:31 who have rejected him eternity in hell
20:34 what a tragedy now our Lord Jesus Christ
20:37 took upon himself a body that he might
20:40 be able to fight the devil and defeat
20:42 the Devil and rest from the Devil the
20:44 power of
20:48 death in our new himno the one verse of
20:51 the song Death of death and hell's
20:54 destruction that's what he did on the
20:56 cross one of the great Puritan writers
20:58 has a book called The Death of death
21:01 death in the death of
21:03 Christ you see the Lord Jesus Christ by
21:06 taking on himself a body defeated Satan
21:08 by the way we won't take time to do it
21:10 but it's rather interesting to
21:14 contrast our Lord's attitude and Satan's
21:18 attitude Satan said ye shall be his
21:22 God Jesus Christ was God and became man
21:25 Satan said lift yourself up and be
21:28 somebody important I will be like the
21:29 most high
21:31 Jesus Christ was the most high and came
21:35 down to become the lowest of the law a
21:39 servant Satan said y hath God
21:41 said Jesus said in the volume of the
21:43 book it's written of me I've come to do
21:47 your will Satan said ye shall not die
21:50 Jesus came and did die and defeated
21:53 death by dying Satan said You shall know
21:54 good and
21:58 evil Jesus Christ took upon himself the
22:00 sins of the the world when he died now
22:03 he could not have defeated Satan and
22:07 conquered death unless he could die all
22:08 of this started as you know way back in
22:12 Genesis 3:1 15 when God declared war on
22:15 the devil and God said that the seed of
22:18 the woman would one day defeat the seed
22:21 of The Serpent and one day the Serpent's
22:23 head was going to be crushed and that's
22:25 what happened at the
22:27 cross sometime whenever the devil is
22:29 getting after you and you feel like he's
22:31 going to win the battle just turn to
22:35 Colossians chapter 2 and read it to the
22:37 devil just read it to
22:40 him just taunt him with
22:43 it Colossians
22:46 2:14 blotting out the handwriting of
22:50 ordinances that was against us which was
22:53 contrary to us and took it out of the
22:57 way nailing it to his cross and having
23:01 spoiled Prince principalities and Powers
23:05 he made a show of them openly triumphing
23:09 over them in it in the cross on the
23:12 cross when my Lord was at his weakest he
23:15 won his greatest battle completely
23:18 defeating Satan and all of his
23:21 hosts but he had to have a body to do
23:25 this when Satan brought sin into this
23:29 world he did it through the body of
23:36 Adam in one man one man's Disobedience
23:39 all of us were plunged into sin when our
23:41 Lord would bring Victory into this world
23:44 he did it in a body of the last Adam
23:48 Jesus Christ he had to have a body to
23:51 defeat Satan I often think of those
23:53 words of the Lord
23:57 Jesus in John 12 as he was approaching
23:58 the cross
24:03 now is the Judgment of this world now
24:08 shall the prince of this world be cast
24:12 out and I if I be lifted up from the
24:16 Earth shall draw all men unto me now
24:18 being lifted up doesn't mean honored and
24:20 glorified by our Praises being lifted up
24:23 means being crucified and he had have a
24:26 body for that there's a third purpose
24:29 that our Lord fulfilled this is going to
24:32 be a surprise to some of you Hebrews chapter
24:33 chapter
24:38 5 beginning at verse 7 Hebrews 5:7 he
24:41 took upon himself a body to reveal God
24:44 if you want to see Jesus read your Bible
24:46 he's there and he reveals God he took
24:49 upon himself a body to defeat Satan we
24:51 don't fight for victory we fight from
24:54 Victory thirdly he took upon himself a
24:58 body to learn obedience
25:02 does that shock you Hebrews 5:7 speaking
25:05 about our lord Jesus who in the days of his
25:06 his
25:08 flesh that is when he was here on Earth
25:10 in a human body not yet
25:13 glorified when he had offered up prayers
25:16 and supplications with strong crying and
25:20 tears unto him that was able to save him
25:22 out of
25:24 death speaking here about the
25:26 resurrection and was heard and that he
25:29 feared God didn't save him from from
25:32 Death obviously he died God saved him
25:34 out of death it was not possible that
25:36 the cords of death should hold him verse
25:40 8 though he were a
25:45 son yet he learned obedience by the
25:48 things which he suffered and being made
25:53 perfect being perfected in his Humanity
25:56 through what he experienced he became
25:58 the author of Eternal salvation
26:02 unto all them that obey him called of
26:06 God a high priest after the order of
26:08 melchisedec now how in the world can God learn
26:14 anything how can you teach God anything
26:17 who is his counselor with whom does God
26:18 come and get
26:21 advice obviously it's ludicrous to even
26:24 say such a thing God knows everything
26:26 from the very beginning he's talking
26:29 here about the days of his flesh now the
26:32 Incarnation is not as easily explained
26:35 as some people like to believe there are
26:38 many mysteries about his Incarnation
26:39 that we'll not be able to understand
26:42 till we get to Glory our Lord Jesus
26:44 Christ had perfect power and yet he was
26:48 weak our Lord Jesus Christ knew what was
26:51 in men yet he asked where did you bury
26:54 Lazarus how long has he been
26:56 dead well of course when our Lord showed
26:59 up at the grave of Lazarus huh he'd been
27:02 dead for 4 days and he raised him from
27:04 the dead and yet he stood there and wept
27:06 he wept and then he exercised
27:08 resurrection power and raised him from
27:10 the dead how long has your boy been like
27:12 this he asked the
27:15 father there are Mysteries here when my
27:19 Lord came in a human body he emptied
27:22 himself not of his
27:24 deity but apparently he emptied himself
27:27 of the independent exercise of his deity
27:30 I do always those things that please him
27:33 whatever the father says that's what I
27:36 do we're going to see when our Lord was
27:39 tempted that he defeated Satan not as
27:41 God but as
27:44 man certainly God can defeat Satan but
27:47 I'm not God Jesus Christ defeated Satan
27:51 in his temptation as man man shall not
27:53 live by bread alone what's he talking
27:57 about here he's saying this and I Marvel
28:00 at this when my Lord came to this earth
28:03 he took upon himself a body and went
28:06 through the experiences of life that you
28:08 and I go
28:12 through as the God man he learned
28:15 submission through the things that he
28:18 suffered he has gone through hunger and
28:20 thirst he's gone through
28:23 misunderstanding and criticism he's been
28:25 lied about he knew what it was to be
28:27 poor he knew what it was to be a member
28:29 of a
28:32 downtrodden minority
28:34 race our Lord went through the
28:37 onslaughts and the assaults of Satan
28:39 don't ever get the idea that once he
28:41 finished those Temptations in the
28:42 wilderness that was the end not on your
28:45 life Satan was constantly after him
28:48 there were people blaspheming the Lord
28:51 Jesus he's a drunkard he's a wine Biber
28:53 the Lord Jesus went through things you
28:56 and I have gone through and
28:58 more he went through the suffering in
29:01 the garden he went through that arrest
29:03 and being treated like he lost his
29:06 rights lost his human rights lost his civil
29:07 civil
29:09 rights and then he was
29:12 crucified and nobody in this Auditorium
29:13 can ever come to him and say now you
29:15 don't know what I'm going
29:17 through that's one reason why he took
29:20 upon himself a body he learned to depend
29:23 upon the father through the things that
29:26 he suffered he learned to walk by faith
29:29 he was perfected he was equipped for his
29:31 ministry what Ministry the ministry of
29:33 being our high
29:36 priest I suppose everybody here at
29:39 sometime or another has said nobody
29:41 understands lots of times children say
29:44 this this to to their parents well
29:47 mother you just don't know how I
29:50 feel well now dad you just don't know
29:51 how I feel well I do know how you feel
29:54 no you don't know how I feel look I went
29:55 through no you nobody's ever gone through
29:57 through
29:59 this ever talk like
30:01 that and someday they get married and
30:03 have their own kids and one day their
30:04 kids come and say you know you don't
30:06 know what I'm going through they say uh
30:08 oh that sounds
30:10 familiar you can never come to Jesus
30:12 Christ and say you don't know what I'm
30:14 going through he knows what you're going
30:15 through in fact he knows what you're
30:17 going through more than you do because
30:20 when he went through it he had no sin in
30:22 his life to dull
30:25 it when he went through Temptation it
30:27 was the the whole thing when he went
30:30 through test in trial he had a super
30:33 sensitive nature he had the holy nature
30:35 of God and he felt this far more than
30:37 you and I feel
30:40 it he knows what you're going
30:43 through that's why Hebrews chapter 2
30:47 says what it says in verses 9 and 10 we see
30:48 see
30:50 Jesus who was made a little lower than
30:54 the angels for the suffering of death we
30:57 see him crowned with Glory and Honor
30:59 that he by the grace of God should taste
31:01 death for every
31:04 man for it became him it was suitable
31:07 for him for whom are all things and by
31:09 whom are all things in bringing many
31:12 sons un Glory it was suitable for him to
31:15 make the captain of their salvation
31:18 perfect through suffering verse 17
31:21 wherefore in all things it behooved him
31:24 to be made like his Brethren that he
31:26 might be a
31:30 merciful and faith faithful high priest
31:33 in things pertaining to God for in that
31:36 he himself hath suffered being tempted
31:40 he is able to help them that are tempted
31:44 and that encourages me as my high priest
31:46 he can keep me from
31:49 sinning if I'll just come to the throne
31:52 of grace and let him do it now the
31:55 reason many Christians get bitter when
31:56 they're going through difficulty is
31:59 because they forget this
32:02 some Christian fails you life fails you
32:05 say well God doesn't care God doesn't
32:07 know what I'm going through dear friend
32:10 of mine he knows more of what you're
32:12 going through than you know all you have
32:14 to do is come to that throne of grace
32:17 and say Lord when you were here on Earth
32:20 you experienced this you know how I feel
32:22 you know what I'm going through here I
32:24 am give me the grace that I need you're
32:27 merciful and you're gracious now just
32:31 give me what I need to see me through
32:32 one little word about this and we'll
32:42 obedience by going through
32:46 suffering the only way to really learn
32:50 the will of God is to suffer a lot of
32:51 folks want to know the will of God Like
32:53 You Do the instructions for running your
32:55 um vacuum
32:58 cleaner no God has to put us through
33:00 difficulties he learned through
33:03 obedience so often we learn through
33:07 failure uh Hebrews 10 quotes back from
33:11 Psalm 40 where it says um a body thou
33:14 Hast prepared me Psalm 40 says my ears
33:15 hast thou
33:17 opened here's a case where the New
33:20 Testament expands the Old Testament the
33:22 psalmist said speaking about the Lord
33:25 Jesus my ears hast thou opened when the
33:27 Holy Spirit wrote it in Hebrews 10 he
33:30 said a body thou Hast prepared me I came
33:32 to do thy will oh God no contradiction
33:35 here if you'll read at your leisure
33:38 Isaiah chapter 50: 4 and 5 where it
33:40 talks about the Lord Jesus having his
33:43 ears open to the will of God that's all
33:46 he's saying you gave me a body to obey
33:49 your will my ears are open to your will
33:52 I'm going to obey it now he's able to
33:55 sympathize with you don't get
33:58 bitter don't get critical don't stay
34:00 away from church and say well nobody
34:03 understands Jesus understands if you
34:05 want the kind of sympathy and comfort
34:08 and consolation and strength that really
34:10 makes a difference go to the throne of
34:13 grace it was a fourth purpose that our
34:15 Lord fulfilled by taking on himself a
34:18 body and we go back to Hebrews
34:20 10 that he might die for
34:23 Sinners he took upon himself a body that
34:24 he might reveal
34:27 God he took upon himself a body that he
34:30 might might learn obedience that he
34:32 might be able to defeat Satan and that
34:35 he might die for Sinners the word
34:38 perfect is used in verse one of chapter
34:41 10 it's used in verse 14 it's one of the
34:43 key words in the book of Hebrews he's
34:46 talking about that which is perfect now
34:48 if you'll turn back to Hebrews
34:52 9 you'll discover in verse
34:55 9 that the gifts and the sacrifices of
34:58 the old Covenant
35:01 could not make him that did the service
35:04 perfect Mark that the sacrifices made nothing
35:06 nothing
35:09 perfect turn back to chapter 7 of the
35:10 book of
35:12 Hebrews verse
35:16 11 if therefore Perfection were by the
35:19 levitical priesthood the priests made nothing
35:20 nothing
35:24 perfect verse 19 of chapter 7 for the
35:27 law made nothing perfect now here we
35:30 have the three great components of the
35:33 Hebrew religion the sacrifices made
35:37 nothing perfect the priests made nothing
35:40 perfect the law made nothing perfect and
35:42 when you get to Hebrews chap 10:1 he
35:46 sums the whole thing up the law can
35:49 never with those sacrifices which those
35:52 priests offered Year bye continually
35:54 make those who come to it perfect in
35:57 other words the old Covenant never
35:59 brought in anything to Perfection it was all
36:01 all
36:03 temporary now it's obvious that the
36:05 blood of bulls and goats can't take away
36:07 sins here's a man who is a moral
36:10 creature made in the image of God here
36:13 is a sheep how can the blood of a sheep
36:17 an animal ever take care of the sins of
36:22 a moral creature made in the image of
36:26 God man's sin is deliberate this sheep
36:29 is not voluntary ing to die his death is
36:32 involuntary he's taken up to the altar
36:39 volunteer the blood of bulls and goats
36:41 could only
36:45 temporarily cover sin and every year
36:46 they had to go through the day of
36:49 atonement every year every year the same
36:51 ceremony and you'll notice that he says
36:54 that these sacrifices did not bring the
36:56 remission of sin they brought the
36:59 remembrance of sin verse three in these
37:02 sacrifices there's a remembrance of sin
37:06 the animal sacrifices failed the alar
37:08 failed the priests made nothing perfect
37:11 the sacrifices made nothing perfect the
37:14 whole system of law made nothing perfect
37:16 but there came one into the world who
37:20 was perfect who had a perfect birth who
37:22 lived a perfect life and I want you to
37:26 notice he died a perfect
37:28 death each of of these
37:31 sacrifices is fulfilled in the Lord
37:34 Jesus Christ he is the burnt offering
37:36 and he is the peace offering and he's
37:38 the meal offering and he's the sin
37:41 offering and he's the trespass offering
37:43 all of those Old Testament sacrifices
37:46 are wrapped up in Jesus Christ and so
37:48 when he died he
37:51 fulfilled all of the Old Testament
37:54 sacrifices and his blood watch this
37:57 being the blood of the Eternal son of
37:59 God made
38:04 flesh is able to wash away
38:07 sin when John the Baptist stood there by
38:09 the Jordan River and pointed to Jesus
38:13 and said Behold the Lamb of God that
38:15 taketh away the sin of the world it must
38:19 have made those Jewish people shake who
38:22 would ever say the Lamb of God we have
38:25 Lambs but those are man's Lambs those
38:27 are men bringing Lambs to God here's God
38:29 God bringing his lamb to
38:33 men those Lambs only covered sin with
38:37 their blood this lamb takes away sin
38:40 those Lambs covered the sins of Israel
38:43 here is a lamb that takes away the sin
38:48 world to us it isn't a very amazing
38:51 statement to them it hit the headlines
38:53 John the Baptist declares there is a
38:56 lamb that can do what no other lamb can do
38:58 do
39:00 take away the sins of the world and
39:02 that's what Hebrews 10 is
39:05 saying the statements here are so
39:08 amazing I think we read them and we
39:12 aren't stirred by them look at verse 10
39:15 by the witch will because he did the
39:18 will of God in dying on the cross we are
39:21 Sanctified through the offering of the
39:25 body of Jesus Christ once for
39:29 all verse 12 this man after he had
39:32 offered one sacrifice for sins what's
39:35 the next word
39:38 forever does that shake you at all does
39:40 that make you want to get up and shout
39:43 hallelujah one sacrifice for
39:47 sin until you sin the next time oh no
39:52 one sacrifice for sin forever sat
39:54 down now you always sit down when your
39:57 work is done his work was finished sat
40:00 down on the right hand of God look at
40:07 verse 14 for by one offering he hath
40:10 perfected forever he likes that word
40:14 doesn't he them that are
40:19 stifi Verse 18 now where remission of
40:22 these is to remit sin means to send it
40:25 away to forgive it to get rid of it to
40:27 carry it off now where remission of of
40:40 sin in other words we've got a finished
40:43 completed perfected
40:47 salvation don't you add to it the Ten
40:50 Commandments or baptism or the Lord's
40:53 supper or foot washing or fasting or
40:57 feasting or anything else
40:59 a perfect
41:04 birth a perfect life a perfect death and
41:13 salvation and it's all by
41:16 faith I'm glad the Lord Jesus Christ
41:18 took upon himself a
41:21 body I'm glad that he took upon that
41:23 body your sins and
41:27 M I'm glad that today I can offer to you
41:31 what he offered to me and I received it a
41:32 a completed
41:34 completed
41:36 salvation is
41:40 done it's finished it always will be
41:48 you that's how
41:52 um Jay Hudson Taylor got
41:55 saved the great founder of the China
41:58 inland mission was a rebellious
42:01 teenager his mother left him home one
42:03 day while she had to make a trip to
42:06 visit some friends and she'd be gone for
42:08 sometime and so he went up and found a
42:11 box full of pamphlets and he said well
42:13 these are religious pamphlets but
42:15 there'll be a story in them anyway he
42:17 started reading this one pamphlet and
42:20 was reading the story that was in it and
42:24 he came to the phrase the finished work of
42:25 of
42:28 Christ now what he didn't know was that
42:30 miles away his mother had suddenly
42:33 gotten a burden for her teenage boy and
42:36 she'd gone off by herself and prayed and
42:38 prayed and prayed until God released the
42:41 burden and she knew he'd get
42:44 saved and he was reading the finished
42:47 work of Christ and something hit him if
42:50 that work is finished said he to himself
42:53 then all I have to do is accept it and
42:55 right then and there he did and he was
42:59 born again and God made out of him a
43:01 tremendous tremendous missionary
43:05 leader a perfect salvation by one
43:09 offering he's perfected forever them
43:12 that have been set apart Have you shared
43:13 in that
43:16 salvation can you say I know I'm saved
43:19 forever our Lord Jesus Christ took upon
43:22 himself a body that he might reveal God
43:24 he's done that he is doing that that he
43:27 might defeat Satan he's done that and he
43:28 is doing
43:32 that that he might be your high
43:35 priest and sympathize with you and help
43:38 you that he might be your savior now if
43:41 you've never received him do so because
43:44 Jesus Christ is not going to do one more
43:47 thing than what he has
43:50 done he finished his work father I have
43:52 finished the work that thou gavest me to
43:54 do he went back to heaven now he's
43:57 engaged in his unfinished work praying
43:59 for his
44:01 people but my unsaved friend Jesus
44:03 Christ won't do one more thing to save
44:06 you now it's between you and the Holy
44:08 Spirit the spirit of God speaks to your
44:10 heart if you've never trusted Christ do
44:14 so and he'll give to you a finished
44:16 perfected Eternal forever
44:19 forever
44:21 salvation gracious
44:25 father we Marvel at all that you
44:27 accomplished in the coming of Jesus
44:31 Christ to this world how that even in his
44:33 his
44:37 birth he was able to accomplish your
44:42 will and give to us through his
44:44 death a completed
44:46 salvation I pray that there will be
44:48 those here tonight who will trust him
44:50 and be born
44:53 again and father help us as we live in
44:56 these bodies and as Jesus lives in these bodies
44:58 bodies
45:01 to realize that he knows and he
45:05 understands bless now this closing
45:09 hymn help people to respond to your love
45:11 I pray in jesus'
