0:02 in this video we'll discuss the
0:04 different levels of communication and
0:06 examine where public speaking falls in
0:08 the context of broader communication
0:10 studies for the purposes of our
0:12 discussion we'll break down
0:14 communication into five categories or
0:18 levels in TR personal interpersonal
0:21 small group public speaking and mass
0:23 communication while we don't have the
0:25 time to have a comprehensive discussion
0:27 of each of these levels right now I will
0:29 give you a little information on each so
0:31 that you you can have a better
0:32 understanding of where public speaking
0:35 fits in the larger spectrum of
0:38 communication put simply inpersonal
0:40 communication is communication with
0:43 yourself how many of you talk to
0:45 yourself either out loud or just in your
0:48 head do you ever debate a difficult
0:51 decision or make a mental to-do list
0:54 Daydream of course we all do don't worry
0:57 this is all perfectly normal put in the
0:59 context of the communication models that
1:01 we discussed in a previous video
1:03 intrapersonal communication it simply
1:05 means that you're both Communicator a
1:07 and Communicator
1:10 B interpersonal communication adds a
1:13 second person to the equation sometimes
1:15 called dietic communication
1:17 interpersonal communication involves a
1:20 diad or two people interpersonal
1:22 communication can be classified as
1:24 personal meaning that it takes place in
1:26 some sort of relational context think of
1:29 your family and friends there or impersonal
1:30 impersonal
1:32 which does not involve a relationship
1:35 think here of the cashier at Walmart or
1:36 random people who strike up a
1:38 conversation while waiting in
1:40 line while not all interpersonal
1:42 communication takes place in a
1:45 relationship interpersonal communication
1:48 is the foundation of all relationships
1:50 our need for and use of interpersonal
1:54 communication also changes over
1:57 time small group communication involves
1:59 a group of at least three people and can
2:02 include as many is 12 or so in order to
2:04 be classified as a true small group the
2:07 group must have a shared set of goals
2:10 and see themselves as a group in other
2:12 words eight people who just happen to be
2:14 walking on the same sidewalk at the same
2:16 time are not a small group they're just
2:19 an aggregation of people a small group
2:21 is working towards some type of goal
2:25 together and is conscious of doing so
2:27 the members of a small group also have
2:29 some level of interdependence meaning
2:31 that the behaviors of one group member
2:34 affects the other members of that
2:37 group public speaking typically involves
2:39 one person speaking to many people in a
2:42 face-to-face environment the language
2:43 and style of communication used in
2:45 public speaking is generally more formal
2:47 than that of interpersonal and small group
2:48 group
2:50 communication obviously we'll have much
2:52 more to say on the nature and practice
2:55 of public speaking in subsequent
2:58 videos the final level of communication
3:00 is mass communication in which an
3:02 individual or organization is
3:04 communicating to a mass audience
3:08 comprised hopefully of many many people
3:10 there are two additional factors that
3:11 set mass communication apart from the
3:14 other types of communication first mass
3:17 communication is mediated communication
3:19 that means that the channel always
3:21 involves some sort of
3:23 Technology the second difference is that
3:25 feedback is always delayed in mass
3:28 communication can you provide feedback
3:31 certainly but the person or organization
3:33 sending the message won't receive that
3:36 feedback simultaneously the message will
3:38 already be sent before they hear from
3:42 you now I have a question for you in
3:44 what ways do the other levels of
3:46 communication particularly intrapersonal
3:49 interpersonal and mass communication
3:52 impact speakers and public speaking go
4:16 if you need more time to answer that
4:18 question feel free to pause the video
4:21 now otherwise let's
4:23 continue in this video we discussed the
4:25 different levels of communication
4:28 intrapersonal interpersonal small group
4:31 public speaking and mass communication
4:33 and examined where public speaking falls
4:35 in the context of broader communication
4:38 studies check out some of our other
4:40 videos for more insight into the public speaking
