0:03 who killed John Ain and why it's one of
0:05 the biggest mysteries driving the early
0:07 action in A Song of Ice and Fire but who
0:10 actually did it hi everyone this is
0:12 Robert welcome to inde deep geek on this
0:14 channel we cover a song of vice and fire
0:16 and all of georgea Martin's wider World
0:18 Of Ice And Fire along with the Lord of
0:21 the Rings and The Witcher if you're new
0:24 welcome John Aaron's death which happens
0:26 just before the start of the main story
0:28 in A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the
0:30 key Mysteries that drive the action in
0:33 the first couple of books John was hand
0:36 of the king respected by almost everyone
0:39 and trusted by King Robert barathan then
0:42 he died although he was not a young man
0:44 we are encouraged almost immediately to
0:46 view his death as suspicious
0:48 particularly when like for most of book
0:51 one we see this from a stark perspective
0:54 John Ain was Ned's Foster father and
0:56 Cat's brother-in-law so this was
0:58 personal for the Starks and straight
1:01 away we're told that it was murder
1:03 through a letter from Lysa Aaron John
1:06 Aaron's wife to her sister cat in code
1:08 so only she would understand it we don't
1:11 read the exact text but she names Cersei
1:14 Lannister as having murdered
1:17 JN cat then pushes Ned to accept the
1:19 post of hand of the king and go to
1:21 King's Landing then he can investigate
1:24 and find out the truth so that is what
1:27 Ned is thinking as he heads down south
1:29 and what he starts investigating did
1:32 Cersei do it and if so why what possible
1:35 motivation could Cersei have for killing
1:37 good old John Aaron not that Ned needs
1:39 much persuasion that the Lannisters did
1:41 it he already held them in quite low
1:44 esteem particularly Jamie but why the
1:47 clues quickly start racking up Jon's
1:50 Last Words the seed is strong that book
1:52 he had been reading with the hair colors
1:54 of the children of each Noble family
1:56 seeing Robert's bastard children and how
1:58 they had such black hair and looked a
2:01 lot like him and The Curious Case of Sir
2:03 Hugh of the veil John Aaron Squire who
2:05 was knighted and seemed to come into a
2:08 lot of money immediately after his death
2:10 and was then brutally killed himself by
2:12 the mountain A Lannister loyalist at the
2:14 H's turny just before Ned could question
2:17 him Ned comes to the conclusion that
2:20 John Ain had been investigating the
2:22 parentage of cersei's children had
2:24 discovered about the whole twinsest
2:26 thing and Cersei had ordered his death
2:28 probably paying Sir Hugh of the veil to
2:31 poison him while he was Square then
2:32 ordering the mountain to kill Sir Hugh
2:35 to cover her tracks and to be fair to
2:37 Ned this is pretty much where the
2:39 evidence he had led Jon had been
2:41 investigating the parentage of cersei's
2:43 children Varys had confirmed that Jon
2:45 had been poisoned using the tears of
2:47 lease and said it must have been someone
2:49 close to John hinting heavily that it
2:52 might have been Hugh and Sir Hugh had
2:54 undeniably mysteriously come into some
2:57 money Littlefinger pushes Ned towards
2:59 this conclusion and we learn later that
3:02 that even pyel thought that this is what
3:05 happened and Ned confronts Cersei about
3:06 it all being The Honorable if rather
3:09 naive man that he is but interestingly
3:11 during that confrontation he never
3:13 actually accuses her to her face of
3:16 killing John Aaron instead leaving it
3:18 implied so we'd never actually see her
3:20 reaction to that the closest he gets is
3:23 to say that I know the truth John Aaron
3:26 died for to which she responds by rather
3:28 wearily accusing him of speaking in
3:31 riddles and then the conversation turn
3:33 swiftly to the bigger issue of cersei's
3:34 children and what Ned is going to do
3:36 with the knowledge that they are Jim's
3:39 not Roberts through it all Ned assumes
3:41 she ordered Jon's death to cover her
3:43 tracks but she never actually admits
3:45 anything like that despite being very
3:48 open about everything else and the
3:50 pattern of The Wider story then follows
3:52 the pattern of that conversation anyone
3:55 who thinks about it just assumes that's
3:57 what happened and it gets rather
4:00 overtaken by events but then then Tyrion
4:03 starts to investigate first he gets
4:06 accused of doing it himself by ler Aaron
4:08 which he finds a bit odd then when he
4:10 gets to King's Landing he asks Cersei to
4:15 her face who murdered John Aaron Cersei
4:18 yanked her hand back how should I know
4:20 The Grieving Widow in the Eerie seems to
4:22 think it was me where did she come by
4:25 that notion I wonder I'm sure I don't
4:28 know that fool edad Stark accused me of
4:30 the same thing he hinted that Lord Aaron
4:33 suspected or well
4:36 believed they go on to discuss twincest
4:38 but although again she doesn't exactly
4:41 deny murder she is still rather
4:43 dismissive of the notion then Tyrion
4:45 raises the matter with Littlefinger
4:47 while they happen to be discussing Lysa
4:51 Aon John's Widow little finger starts I
4:53 understand she hates you she believes
4:55 she has good reason when I was her guest
4:58 in the eie she insisted that I'd
4:59 murdered her husband and was not
5:02 inclined to listen to denials he leaned
5:05 forward if I gave her John Aaron's true
5:08 killer she might think more kindly of me
5:11 that made Littlefinger sit up true
5:14 killer I confess you make me curious who
5:17 do you propose it was tyrion's turn to
5:21 smile gifts I give my friends freely
5:23 lyser aarin would need to understand
5:26 that so Tyrion hint a little finger that
5:28 he knows who really killed John Aaron
5:31 which seemed to Rattle him slightly then
5:34 Tyrion questions pyel or well
5:36 interrogates him really shagger the
5:38 mountain Clansman is on hand to provide
5:41 muscle John Ain was sending his wife
5:42 back to the Eerie and his son to be
5:46 fostered on Dragonstone he meant to act
5:50 so you poisoned him first no pyel
5:52 struggled feebly shagger growled and
5:54 grabbed his head The Clansman hand was
5:56 so big he could have crushed the MA's
5:59 skull like an eggshell had he squeezed
6:02 Tyrion tusked at him I saw the tears of
6:05 lease among your potions and you sent
6:07 away Lord ain's own maester and tended
6:09 him yourself so you could make certain
6:14 that he died yes he whimpered yes colan
6:17 was purging so I sent him away the queen
6:20 needed Lord Aon dead she did not say so
6:23 could not varis was listening always
6:26 listening but when I looked at her I
6:28 knew it was not me who gave him the
6:31 poison though I swear it the old man
6:35 wept Faris will tell you it was the boy
6:38 his Squire Hugh he was called he must
6:41 surely have done it ask your sister ask
6:44 her so pyel thought Cersei was behind
6:46 the poisoning and so he just let John
6:49 aarin die rather than treat him but by
6:51 this point we are already pretty sure
6:53 Cersei didn't do it we get our final
6:55 confirmation in the last proper chapter
6:58 of A Storm of Swords it's from sansa's
7:00 point of view and we see Lysa aarin
7:02 talking to Littlefinger or sobbing at
7:06 him tears tears tears she sobbed
7:09 hysterically no need for tears but
7:10 that's not what you said in King's
7:13 Landing you told me to put the tears in
7:16 Jon's wine and I did for Robert and for
7:19 us and I wrote to katn and told her the
7:22 Lannisters had killed my Lord husband
7:24 just as you
7:28 said so Lysa definitely killed her
7:30 husband because little finger told her
7:31 to we should take a moment to
7:33 acknowledge that although this was an
7:35 horrendous act she was clearly not of
7:37 sound mind at the time and under little
7:40 finger's influence but now we can piece
7:42 it all together when confessing Lysa
7:45 says she did it for Robert as well as
7:47 for Littlefinger that's her son Robin
7:51 Ain sweet Robin not Robert barathan what
7:54 is he to do with all this well John Aon
7:56 was planning to send sweet Robin off to
7:58 be fostered by Stannis Baratheon Robert
8:00 barathan also later thought he could be
8:03 fostered by Tywin Lannister and lyser
8:06 would do anything not to lose her child
8:08 little finger suggested the way to stop
8:11 all this was for Jon to die and lyser to
8:13 escape back to the safety of the aie
8:16 with sweet Robin perhaps little finger
8:18 here was also planning ahead and getting
8:20 L's husband out of the way he knew that
8:22 she would want to marry him and that
8:25 would make him even more powerful little
8:27 finger procures a poison and gives it to
8:30 her which she uses perhaps pisel might
8:32 have been able to save John Aaron's life
8:34 but we'll never know because he thought
8:35 it was Cersei who had done it and so he
8:38 did nothing pyel is a Lannister loyalist
8:41 after all and in the meantime
8:43 Littlefinger saw an opportunity to stir
8:46 the pot a bit more and create some chaos
8:48 he always backed himself to advance
8:50 during chaos he got lyser to write to
8:53 cat telling her that Cersei did it cat
8:55 would believe her sister lyser and Ned
8:57 would surely soon be heading down to
8:58 King's Landing to become a hand of the
9:01 king Littlefinger could set the Starks
9:03 and Lannisters against each other
9:05 Littlefinger then carefully pushes Ned
9:07 to find evidence that provides a motive
9:09 for Cersei to kill John Aon remember Ned
9:12 isn't looking for evidence she did it
9:14 he's already been told that she did just
9:17 an understanding of why and we probably
9:19 have to give Littlefinger a bit of
9:22 credit here he did cover his tracks well
9:23 most of the major players in King's
9:26 Landing assumed it was Cersei
9:28 incidentally Sir Hugh of the veil
9:31 remember him was mostly a red herring he
9:33 wasn't involved at all and his death
9:35 wasn't a Lannister hit job perhaps
9:37 little finger lent him the money for a
9:39 deposit for a horse and armor perhaps he
9:41 manipulated the lists so Sir Hugh would
9:43 be facing the mountain but George Ora
9:46 Martin has confirmed that the mountain
9:48 needed no reason to kill Sir Hugh s
9:51 barriston noted that Hugh wasn't ready
9:53 to be a knight and the Hound noticed
9:55 that his gorgette hadn't been tied
9:57 properly and the mountain was just a
9:59 sadistic brute of a man
10:01 and if you're wondering why Lysa
10:04 confuses things by accusing Tyrion not
10:05 Cersei of the murder when he is her
10:08 prisoner well we don't know for sure
10:10 perhaps she just got a bit confused or
10:12 couldn't remember exactly what she'd
10:14 said in her note to cat later she just
10:16 talks about the Lannisters having done
10:19 it not Cersei specifically but it was
10:21 probably just her opportunistically
10:23 trying to cover her own back she
10:26 obviously knew that she had done it but
10:28 if Tyrion was tried and found guilty of
10:30 it in the of Gods and Men then that
10:32 would be the official truth of the
10:34 matter from then on it didn't work but
10:36 you can see the logic and after
10:39 questioning most of the key players
10:41 perhaps Tyrion had figured all this out
10:43 he certainly hinted to Littlefinger that
10:45 he had and perhaps Littlefinger
10:47 responded by getting Mand and Moore to
10:48 try to kill Tyrion in the battle of the
10:50 Blackwater I did another video on that
10:53 if you're interested but regardless as
10:55 far as Littlefinger was concerned the
10:57 biggest weak Link in all this plotting
11:00 was lyser Littlefinger had to use her
11:03 for this but she wasn't exactly
11:06 stable which leads us to why this
11:08 matters in the long run yes the mystery
11:10 was one of the things that sparked the
11:13 whole war in the first place but there's
11:15 a chance it may also play a big role
11:18 later in the story Littlefinger may
11:19 think that he has covered himself by
11:22 killing lyser and dealing with melan the
11:24 minstrel who had witnessed what happened
11:26 but there is one other witness to L's
11:30 confession Sansa and and what a way this
11:33 would be to round off Littlefinger story
11:35 we often think of Littlefinger story arc
11:37 needing to come round to Vengeance from
11:39 the Starks for what he did to them but
11:43 it's also a Tully story he killed lyser
11:46 and defamed Cat and an Arin story too it
11:49 is John Ain who was killed after all
11:51 there would be some poetic irony if the
11:53 cause of his ultimate downfall is not
11:57 just a stark but a Tully and Sansa is
11:59 the most Tully like of all the Starks
12:01 and someone from the veil and
12:02 Littlefinger currently seems to be
12:04 plotting to marry Sansa to Harry The
12:08 Heir the heir to the veil John Aaron's
12:10 murder is not just a starting point for
12:13 the action in the story it may well be
12:15 the end for one of the most cunning and
12:17 manipulative characters to play The Game
12:20 of Thrones if or when Sansa ever reaches
12:23 a safe place she now knows the secret
12:26 that can bring him down eventually
12:28 little finger lies and his creepy
12:30 obession with Sansa preventing him from
12:33 killing her we'll catch up with him if
