0:22 welcome we first meet Quai when she is
0:24 part of the honor guard that escorts
0:26 Daenerys into kth with her newly hatched
0:29 dragons one of three dignitaries along
0:32 with Pat PR and zaro x and daxos she
0:35 doesn't say much then just warning Danny
0:37 to beware everyone basically because
0:39 they will try to take her dragons from
0:42 her qu follows this up later by telling
0:44 Dany that she should leave the city
0:46 while she still can Danny asks where
0:50 else she might go and Quai says to go
0:52 north you must Journey South to reach
0:54 the West you must go east to go forward
0:57 you must go back and to touch the light
1:00 you must pass Beneath The Shadow
1:03 asai Danny thought she would have me go to
1:03 to
1:07 asai will the asay give me an army she
1:09 demanded will there be gold for me in a
1:11 Shai will there be ships what is there
1:14 in a Shai that I will not find in
1:18 kth truth said the woman in the mask and
1:20 bowing she faded back into the
1:23 crowd Danny's mind here goes to a shy
1:25 because qu tells her that in order to go
1:27 north and west which is the direction of
1:30 Westeros from where she is she must go
1:32 south and east and the only place of any
1:35 real note in that direction is asai or
1:37 to give it its full name asai by the
1:39 shadow which ties in with the idea of
1:42 passing beneath the shadow it's a quite
1:44 literal interpretation of what Quai says
1:47 but Quai noticeably doesn't correct Dany
1:49 instead she allows her to go on thinking
1:51 that that's where she should go even
1:53 telling her a reason why she might want
1:56 to go there and that's the last we see
1:59 of Quai in person as far as we know she
2:02 stay in C but she appears to Dany three
2:04 more times as Visions perhaps through
2:07 the use of glass candles she first just
2:10 repeats the same advice she gave before
2:12 probably as a way to identify herself
2:14 but then when Danny is in Marine Quai
2:17 appears again to say the glass candles
2:20 are burning soon comes the pale Mare and
2:23 after her the others caken and dark
2:26 flame lion and Griffin the son's son and
2:29 the Mama's Dragon Trust none of them
2:33 remember the undying beware the perfumed
2:36 cachell now at the time this seemed
2:38 quite confusing to Dany but with the
2:39 knowledge of what's going on in The
2:41 Wider world we can see that this is
2:43 actually quite an accurate list of who
2:46 or what will come to her in Marine the
2:48 pale May is the name of the plague that
2:50 hits the city later in the story then
2:52 there is a list of people who are
2:54 currently trying to get to Dany mostly
2:56 unbeknownst to her the kren is
2:58 presumably Victorian Greyjoy who has
3:01 been sent by yuron the dark flame is
3:04 presumably Moro the Red Priest The Lion
3:06 presumably Tyrion the Griffin John
3:09 connington the son's son Quentin Martell
3:12 and the M's Dragon aegon I 6 or young
3:14 Griff if you prefer this is new
3:17 information but the message is the same
3:21 like before Quai wants Dany not to trust
3:23 any of them she also wants her to
3:25 remember the undying who Dany trusted
3:28 and then they tried to kill her and we
3:31 assume Steal Her Dragons and also throws
3:34 in someone else the perfumed cell who
3:36 could be any one of two or three
3:37 different people that Danny shouldn't
3:40 trust so qu's interactions with Dany
3:43 thus far were about building trust with
3:44 her by telling her things that were yet
3:47 to happen telling her not to trust
3:49 anyone else and telling her that there's
3:51 a truth in the Shai that she needs to
3:54 hear all Clues to what Quai might want
3:57 but we'll come back to that in a moment
3:59 because then we come to the final and
4:01 most sign ific vision from Quai it
4:03 happens right at the end of A Dance with
4:06 Dragons Dany is out alone in the dothi
4:09 sea with drogon then qu appears with a
4:12 mask made of Starlight saying remember
4:16 who you are Daenerys the dragons know do
4:18 you what follows which may or may not
4:21 also be from Quai are visions of viseris
4:23 the only other Targaryen she ever knew
4:26 and Jorah Mormont telling her to get to
4:29 West Ros already the message is clear
4:32 Dany should be more targaryan again
4:34 because she hadn't been she'd spent most
4:37 of the last book ruling in Marine not
4:39 going to Westeros and making compromise
4:42 after compromise chaining up her dragons
4:43 marrying someone she didn't love
4:46 reopening the fighting pits and so on
4:49 and then taken out into the Dothraki Sea
4:52 by drogon she is symbolically purged of
4:55 all that was Marine her hair her titles
4:56 even the contents of her stomach after
5:00 she ate some dodgy berries she's just a
5:02 Targaryen on her own with a dragon in a
5:06 cave that she calls Dragon Stone and
5:08 then she encounters the dothi again she
5:11 really is about to go back to the start
5:14 of her story in order to move forwards
5:16 and this seems to be qu doing or at
5:18 least she's happy to encourage Dany down
5:21 this path there's quite a rabbit hole
5:23 here to go down if you wish but one of
5:24 the few times George Aram Martin has
5:27 ained on online content about his work
5:29 was a decade or so ago when he said that
5:33 the mirin blot blog just got it in
5:35 saying that the a dance with dragon's
5:37 Daenerys plot line was about her
5:39 choosing between two paths or aspects of
5:42 her personality and landing on Fire and
5:45 Blood so given all of this what does it
5:47 seem that qu wants from Dany or wants
5:50 her to do well she wants her to survive
5:52 she warns her about some real present
5:54 threats people wanting to steal her
5:57 dragons in kth the pale mare in Marine
5:59 she wants her to trust no one else
6:02 outside of her own close Circle and qu
6:04 herself she wants her to be truly
6:06 targaryan she wants her to get to
6:08 Westeros with her dragons and she wants
6:11 her to know the truth from asai let's
6:13 deal with the asai thing first because
6:16 clearly Danny doesn't go to asai despite
6:18 qu's apparent urgings the boring
6:20 literary answer is probably that this
6:22 fell victim to George's Gardener writing
6:24 style and his decision not to include a
6:27 5-year time Jump between books but in
6:30 World Dany not going to a Shai is easily
6:32 understood as her simply not taking qu's
6:35 advice Quai told her she should go there
6:37 and learn some truth and Dany decided to
6:39 do something
6:41 different why did Quai want Danny to go
6:45 to asai for knowledge presumably when
6:47 Aon the F wanted to hatch dragon eggs he
6:50 sent for pyromancers from asai The
6:52 Legend of Azora High seems to have come
6:54 from asai and qu herself obviously also
6:58 at least spent some time there might qu
7:01 believe that Dany is aor High reborn it
7:03 seems to fit the facts and it could well
7:05 fit in with some other dreams that Dany
7:07 had about destroying an army dressed in
7:10 ice with Dragonfire or trying to escape
7:12 something cold for example but let's
7:14 come back to that and first look at who
7:15 Quai might
7:18 be the fact that she is masked all the
7:21 time does raise a question in our minds
7:22 as well as the fact that she can speak
7:25 fluent westerosi odd for a woman from a
7:27 Shai living in kth and she is clearly a
7:30 magic user and sear of vision from the
7:32 future in some way and seems to be
7:34 wanting to advise Dany rather than steal
7:36 her dragon say the boring
7:38 straightforward answer here is that she
7:41 is what she presents herself to be a
7:43 shadow binder from kth who sees
7:46 something in Dany and is trying to help
7:49 but that doesn't explain why in
7:51 particular why she wants Dany to lean
7:54 into her targaryan self not trust people
7:57 and so on might it be that the mask
7:59 hides someone we the reader might know
8:02 know I'll admit that I usually dislike
8:04 this line of thought my view is that the
8:06 world is often a much larger and more
8:08 complex place if not everyone is
8:11 secretly someone else but this time I
8:13 think that there might be something in
8:16 it because why would a random magic user
8:18 from the other side of the world be so
8:20 keen on Dany remembering who she is a
8:22 Targaryen unless she also had an
8:25 interest in targaryens and why does she
8:28 care so much about Dany personally so
8:31 let's go back to those Clues a magic
8:34 user speaks fluent Wester Rosie hides
8:36 her face so perhaps something about that
8:38 might be a clue wants Dany to reclaim
8:40 her targaryan Fire and Blood approach to
8:43 life and not trust anyone and apparently
8:46 comes from a Shai that rules out a lot
8:49 of possible candidates a targaryan
8:51 linked magic user who was probably in
8:53 West Ross at some point and then headed
8:56 east oh and connected to stars because
8:58 stars are mentioned a lot in connection
9:00 with qu
9:01 some in the asang of isce and fire
9:04 Community have suggested asara danan the
9:06 star symbolism would certainly work and
9:09 she is missing presumed dead but there
9:11 was never a hint that she was a magic
9:13 user or that she particularly knew or
9:15 cared about her ladies husbands young
9:18 sister Dany and there's no particular
9:19 reason why she might have escaped all
9:22 the way to a Shai it's possible but
9:24 seems to be driven more by a desire for
9:26 ashara D to reappear in the story than
9:28 the clues we already have to qu's
9:31 Identity so let's look at the other name
9:34 that has often been suggested Shira sear
9:37 she was one of the great Bastards of Aon
9:38 the fourth along with Blood Rave and
9:41 bittersteel and Damon Blackfire though
9:43 of the four she's definitely the one we
9:46 know least about her mother was from OS
9:48 and was reputedly a sorceress and this
9:50 is how Georg ARA Martin described her
9:53 for amok an artist whose excellent work
9:55 often appears on this channel to help
9:57 with a picture there's a link to ok's
9:59 work in the description this is what
10:03 George said she was the greatest beauty
10:06 of her age a slender and elegant woman
10:09 slim of waist and full of breast she had
10:11 the silver gold hair of the targaryens
10:14 thick and curling and wore it very long
10:17 she had a heartshaped face full lips and
10:19 her mismatched eyes were strangely large
10:22 and full of mischief her Rivals said she
10:25 used them to melt men's hearts even at
10:27 an early age she was a great reader she
10:30 spoke a dozen tongues and surrounded
10:32 herself with ancient Scrolls like her
10:35 mother she was reputed to practice the dark
10:36 dark
10:39 arts so immediately we have someone who
10:41 might wish to cover their face to avoid
10:44 being recognized has a link to OS
10:46 through her mother is multilingual and a
10:49 magic user and as a Targaryen closely
10:51 associated with blood Raven and the
10:52 search for the prince that was promised
10:54 her fascination with Dany makes a lot of
10:57 sense we even have a confident assertion
11:00 from a young egg that she bathes in
11:03 blood to keep her youthful looks and as
11:05 a literary mirror in different ways to
11:08 blood Raven and Melisandre it makes
11:10 thematic sense if she has managed to
11:12 live a long life through magical means
11:15 but why might she be in a shy if she was
11:18 born in Westeros well I'll be honest
11:19 that this was for a long time the
11:21 missing link for me she seemed to fit
11:23 the clues we had but I couldn't link her
11:26 across to a Shai in truth she rather
11:28 disappears from The Narrative we have in
11:29 the world of Ice and Fire
11:31 we get no explanation of what happened
11:34 to her she was definitely around while
11:36 blood Raven was hand of the king to arys
11:38 I first we read about that in the Duncan
11:41 egg stories but then it all goes a bit
11:44 quiet then I noticed that just a few
11:47 years later we had a clear link across
11:51 from the targaryens to asai aegon I
11:53 that's egg when he becomes king became
11:55 obsessed with trying to hatch dragon
11:58 eggs and we read that he commissioned
12:00 Journeys to to places as far away as a
12:03 shy by the Shadow with the hopes of
12:05 finding texts and knowledge that had not
12:07 been preserved in
12:09 Westeros we have no more detail than
12:12 that but who might he send this was
12:14 clearly important to him so he needed
12:16 someone he could trust who perhaps
12:18 shared his desire to hatch dragons
12:20 someone who could speak the language and
12:22 would be able to distinguish between
12:26 real magic and charlatans Shir seista
12:28 seems easily the most obvious choice she
12:32 was family she was from OS spoke many
12:34 languages was magically inclined spent
12:37 her time surrounded by ancient Scrolls
12:39 yes unless there was a rift we don't
12:40 know anything about it would be a
12:44 surprise if he didn't send her so it
12:46 makes sense for Shara to be there in a
12:48 shy and as she was obsessed with magical
12:51 Toms and the like it makes sense that
12:52 she might have stayed there for a time
12:55 though a shy with its constant gloom and
12:57 lack of fresh water and fresh food may
12:59 not be somewhere you want to stay for a
13:02 long time hence K and thus far I think
13:04 we can say that all this makes logical
13:06 sense and fits the facts though we don't
13:09 have any specific supporting evidence
13:12 but when we meet qu that changes
13:14 immediately because the sea star
13:16 supporting evidence is almost
13:19 overwhelming the first time she appears
13:22 magically to Dany she hears seawater
13:24 lapping against her boat the second she
13:27 is in water in a bath and Moonlight
13:29 shines from qu's eyes the Third time we
13:33 get this repeated language the Stars
13:35 wheeled around her and whispered secrets
13:39 in her ear qu Danny called Where Are You
13:44 qu then she saw her mask is made of
13:47 Starlight so qu's mask the thing that
13:50 hides her identity is made of Starlight
13:53 like sheer a sea star and then we get to
13:56 what Quai clearly wants from Dany she
13:58 wants to keep her safe to prevent others
14:00 from stealing her dragon for her not to
14:02 trust the Myriad of voices around her
14:05 and ultimately to embrace her targaryan
14:08 nature remember who you are Daenerys the
14:11 Stars whispered in a woman's voice the
14:13 dragons know do
14:17 you let's say Shira sear did travel to
14:19 asai read their ancient prophecies and
14:21 learn their magic then headed to the
14:25 comfort of K as all seems very possible
14:27 how would she react if Dany suddenly
14:29 emerged out of the red waste with three
14:32 dragon hatchlings I think exactly how
14:35 she did react warning her about the
14:37 dangers of kth all the people who would
14:39 try to take her dragons or trick her try
14:42 to get her to embrace her in a Targaryen
14:44 not just become a foreign Queen ruling
14:46 over Marine through compromise she may
14:49 even get a bit emotional at seeing Dany
14:51 when she thought all of her family were
14:55 dead and Magic gone forever and Dragons
14:57 gone forever and sure enough when Dany
15:01 does see her she sees is this yet there
15:04 she stood eyes wet and shiny behind the
15:09 implacable red lacer mask was that qu
15:11 crying and all this might be exacerbated
15:14 if Shear had by this point also come to
15:17 the conclusion that Dany was a Zora High
15:20 reborn which she may have done we're
15:22 told that Legend comes from a Shai and I
15:24 don't think it's a coincidence that's
15:26 just before Quai magically appears to
15:28 Dany the first time Dany gets a vision
15:31 of her riding Bion and burning or
15:34 melting an army of ice Dany wakes to
15:37 think that this is how it was meant to
15:41 be and then Quai appears pretty on the
15:43 nose and it's also an echo of a dream
15:46 that Jon gets we think from blood Raven
15:48 of him seemingly as the same Prince that
15:51 was promised figure with a flaming sword
15:53 at top the wall killing the undead which
15:56 brings me to the literary irony of all
15:58 this and why I consider that George Aram
16:00 Martin would love the idea of Quai being
16:04 Shear sea star blood Raven and Shir were
16:06 close very close they were lovers and
16:08 magical collaborators in the most
16:11 magical era of targaryan rule there is
16:13 every reason to believe that they were
16:15 together trying to identify or bring
16:17 about somehow the birth of the prince
16:19 that was promised through the targaryan
16:22 line in Westeros the most important and
16:25 Central task for both of them saving the
16:27 world from the threat of the others long
16:30 story short blood Raven went to the wall
16:32 then north of the wall then became a
16:35 tree Wizard and decided that JN as the
16:37 son of rhaegar and lyanna must be the
16:39 prince that was promised it's too much
16:41 of a digression for this video but he
16:43 guides him protects him sends him
16:45 weapons to use against the others gives
16:48 him Visions Etc how ironic would it be
16:51 if Shira sear his lover and Confidant
16:54 had left for esos a bit later fell out
16:57 of contact with him then stumbled across
17:00 Dany and decided that she was the prince
17:02 that was promised both of them unknown
17:04 to the other as they had fallen out of
17:06 contact blood Raven even tells bran that
17:09 he tried to contact her and failed were
17:11 now guiding their candidate towards
17:13 their fate as they saw it and at some
17:16 point in the next two books they will
17:19 finally meet it just works at a literary
17:22 and emotional level who is the real
17:25 Prince or princess that was
