0:01 sometimes I like to read several books
0:03 get in contact with historians that are
0:04 experts on the subject and make a pretty
0:06 serious video and other times I like to
0:08 get completely unhinged and rant about
0:10 some stuff that I think is funny and by
0:13 sometimes I mean I mean today right
0:14 now today we're talking about my
0:16 favorite tank ladies and gentlemen
0:18 America's only super heavy tank the T28
0:21 aka the Doom [Music]
0:23 [Music]
0:25 Turtle now I said this is my favorite
0:26 tank which is a completely
0:28 unquantifiable metric despite that
0:29 somebody in the comments is still going
0:31 to tell me that I'm wrong so if you
0:32 think I should have a different favorite
0:34 tank go ahead and tell me about it in
0:35 the comments below and maybe I'll do a
0:37 video about that one too okay just to be
0:38 clear when it comes to me and things
0:40 like tanks and planes and guns favorite
0:42 is not the best it's not the most
0:43 impactful it's not the most historically
0:45 relevant it's just the coolest SL
0:48 dumbest one around and in my opinion
0:49 this is it so let's go ahead and get
0:51 into this right after a awkwardly
0:52 Relevant Word from our sponsors this
0:54 video is brought to you by War Thunder
0:56 they've got over 25 200 tanks planes and
0:58 ships pretty much every military vehicle
1:00 from World War II until modern times
1:01 including all the cool weird and obscure
1:03 ones that may have never even actually
1:05 seen combat for example let's say that I
1:08 wanted to be the T28 aka the Doom Turtle
1:10 America's only super heavy tank I can do
1:12 that then I can go over to x-ray mode
1:13 look at all the different components
1:15 check out all the specs actually learn
1:16 about the tank then I can hop over and I
1:18 can customize it because let's face it I
1:20 don't just want to be the Doom Turtle I
1:21 want to be the Doom Turtle covered in
1:23 bushes so I can try to sneak up on the
1:25 enemy like I'm a 200,000 lb Wy coyote
1:28 with 105 mm Howitzer for a nose then we
1:30 throw an American flag on one side side
1:31 some smack talk on the other and now
1:32 we're ready to go play the game now once
1:34 we start playing the cool part is that
1:35 it's not like a lot of other games where
1:37 you just shoot at the other enemy tank
1:38 and a hit is a hit no matter where it
1:41 lands no in War Thunder you can take out
1:43 individual components of the enemy tank
1:44 for example let's say there was a guy on
1:46 a mobile artillery piece and that one
1:48 guy in particular was talking smack you
1:51 can address him individually or maybe
1:52 you're approaching an enemy tank and you
1:53 fire but your shell doesn't get
1:55 penetration and now it takes a while to
1:56 reload so you just open fire with your
1:58 50 cal right through the window slit
2:00 giving their driver a nice Al face high
2:02 five then once you get the gun reloaded
2:03 you can finish taking out the rest of
2:05 the crew or sometimes you just get that
2:07 lucky shot where the shell goes straight
2:08 through the enemy tank and detonates
2:10 their ammunition and the best part about
2:11 all this is that it's free to play on PC
2:13 PlayStation and Xbox so if you wanted to
2:15 give it a try we'll have a link in a
2:16 discount code in the description down
2:17 below and when you use my link you're
2:19 going to get all kinds of freebies to
2:20 get you started off on the right foot
2:22 let's get back to the video all right
2:23 the Doom Turtle it is a World War II era
2:25 tank that was designed for one reason
2:27 and one reason only and that is to punch
2:28 through the German Sig freed line if you
2:30 don't know the Sig freed line is
2:31 Germany's western border where they have
2:33 essentially tried to fortify it to make
2:34 it impenetrable to the Allied Forces
2:36 approaching so that they can't break
2:38 into Germany it is approximately 400
2:40 miles of concrete pyramids known as
2:41 Dragon's Teeth making it some tanks and
2:44 other Allied Vehicles can't pass through
2:45 then on the other side of the Dragon's
2:46 Teeth you typically had other things
2:48 that were meant to stop foot soldiers
2:50 like Moes barbwire booby traps and on
2:52 the other side of those was over 18,000
2:54 bunkers with machine gun mortar and
2:56 artillery positions that were going to
2:58 in theory be able to mow down any Ally
2:59 trying to advance through those
3:01 obstacles now the American Military and
3:03 government knew about the Sig freed line
3:04 pretty much the entire time because
3:06 German propaganda told him about it and
3:16 impenetrable so the American Military in
3:17 1943 is like okay we're going to come up
3:19 on the Sig freed line eventually let's
3:21 go ahead and get a plan in the works on
3:22 how we're going to address it once we
3:25 get there now clearly that plan should
3:26 not rely on tanks right I mean that's
3:28 kind of the Sig freed Line's entire Mo
3:30 it was designed built and implemented
3:33 with the sole purpose of stopping tanks
3:35 we should probably do anything other
3:38 than use tanks right wrong completely
3:39 wrong American Engineers got told that
3:41 Germans built an impenetrable tank
3:43 fortification and they're like [ __ ]
3:44 bet we'll see about that we're going to
3:46 build a bigger better tank that's going
3:48 to drive right [ __ ] through it
3:50 America [ __ ] yeah so the engineers got
3:52 to work this is called the at project
3:54 and what they came up with was surely
3:55 there's spots along the Sig freed line
3:57 where the German military has a gap
3:59 where they can drive their vehicles
4:00 through right has to be there they can't
4:02 just have 400 miles and they drive all
4:04 the way around there's got to be points
4:05 where you can pass through it and
4:07 obviously those points of Passage are
4:08 going to be the most fortified positions
4:10 right they're essentially going to make
4:12 a fatal funnel a choke point where all
4:13 of the Allied Forces have to try to go
4:15 through a narrow passageway and on the
4:17 other side it's going to be loaded with
4:19 German 88 anti-tank guns German
4:21 artillery machine guns mortars
4:22 everything they're going to be able to
4:24 slaughter anybody that tries to make it
4:25 through that little tiny narrow passage
4:27 to which the American Engineers are like
4:28 cool obvious solution we're just going
4:30 to make a tank that can can't die okay
4:32 it's going to be so heavily armored that
4:34 there's no anti-tank weapon or artillery
4:37 piece known to man that could kill it
4:38 then we're going to put a gun on it
4:40 that's so big that it can shoot through
4:42 concrete bunkers and take out the enemy
4:43 we're literally going to drive this
4:45 gigantic heavily armored tank directly
4:47 into the enemy choke point stand there
4:49 take all their anti-tank fire be
4:51 Untouchable and then we're going to
4:53 return fire and kill them first okay do
4:54 you understand how gangster that is this
4:56 is this is the ultimate dad dick
4:58 maneuver just straight up like I know
5:00 exactly what you're plan is I know what
5:02 you want me to do so that you can beat
5:04 me I'm going to do it anyways and I'm
5:06 still going to win because [ __ ] you so
5:08 they made the Doom Turtle the T28
5:10 America's only super heavy tank this
5:13 thing is 36 ft long 10 ft tall and 14 ft
5:16 wide it has 12 in of armor on the front
5:19 and it's weighing in 95 tons okay approximately
5:20 approximately
5:23 210,000 lb okay the human mind can't
5:25 comprehend how heavy this tank actually
5:27 is it literally weighs as much as a blue
5:29 whale which also isn't helpful cuz most
5:31 people haven't seen her blue whale okay
5:33 so it's like what's my
5:35 calculator Toyota Corolla is like 3,000
5:38 lb okay it's like 70 Toyota Corollas
5:40 okay this entire thing is like an entire
5:43 parking lot got a gun stra to it and now
5:44 it's coming to kill the enemy speaking
5:47 of gun they went with5 mm gun okay that
5:49 is field grade artillery this is
5:51 literally a Howitzer that they strap to
5:53 the front of this metallic blue whale
5:54 okay if you're not picking up what I'm
5:55 putting down I'm trying to tell you this
5:57 thing is basically the Norwall of death
5:58 all right which raises a question why on
6:00 Earth did they go with with the Doom
6:02 turtle and not the Norwall of death well
6:04 well it's because this thing's slow as
6:05 [ __ ] which is really the downfall of
6:07 this tank because somebody basically
6:08 said hey we're going to build a 200,000
6:10 lb tank and then we're going to put the
6:12 same V8 engine in it that the M4
6:14 Shermans have yeah the Doom turtle is
6:18 rocking a 500 horsepower v8 Ford engine
6:19 okay just for the record if you don't
6:21 know much about engines or horsepower
6:23 Dodge is out here making minivans with
6:26 1,000 horsepower that weigh 5,000 lb and
6:28 the dod thought it would be a good idea
6:31 to stick a 500 horsepower v8 inside of a
6:33 tank that weighs as much as a blue whale
6:34 okay the Doom turtle is coming at you at
6:36 the speed of mock potato pedal to the
6:38 metal balls to the wall this thing maxes
6:40 out at 8 m an hour so clearly they're
6:41 going to have to transport this thing
6:43 all the way to the Sig freed line right
6:44 if they land this thing on a beach in
6:46 Normandy and let it drive all the way
6:48 across France it's going to take like 3
6:49 years to get there and this is actually
6:51 why the Doom Turtle has a unique look of
6:52 having four sets of tracks instead of
6:54 just two very wide sets of tracks like a
6:56 normal super heavy tank would and that's
6:58 because those two outermost tracks come
7:01 off and SE seate from the Doom Turtle
7:02 allowing it to be easier to transport
7:04 both because now the Doom Turtle isn't
7:06 as wide and it comes apart in three
7:08 separate chunks making it all weigh
7:10 significantly less than the original 95
7:12 tons so they've got it all figured out
7:14 and by 1945 they start manufacturing
7:15 these things originally they're planning
7:17 on making 25 of them they figure that'll
7:19 be enough to punch through the Sig freed
7:21 line but they build two prototypes first
7:23 so they get those prototypes built then
7:25 they're testing the first one and the V8
7:27 engine that's trying to move 200,000 lb
7:29 obviously catches fire burns out the ENT
7:31 entire inside of the tank the entire
7:32 thing is essentially a total loss and
7:33 while that was going on the Allied
7:35 Forces managed to penetrate the Sig
7:37 freed line how on Earth did they do that
7:39 without the Doom Turtle you ask well a
7:40 the Sig freed line wasn't really all it
7:42 was cracked up to be according to the
7:44 German propaganda it definitely was not
7:46 impenetrable it was underman it just
7:47 wasn't as good as it was made out to be
7:49 so they just went and they sent out
7:51 Recon and they found a couple of spots
7:52 where they weren't well covered by like
7:54 artillery and machine guns and booby
7:55 traps and then they just put a bulldozer
7:57 out and pushed dirt over the top of the
7:59 dragon's teeth and then drove right over
8:01 the top got Behind Enemy Lines and took
8:03 everybody out yeah the Germans spent God
8:04 knows how much money and man- hours
8:07 building this 400 m stretch of concrete
8:09 booby traps and they got outdone by a
8:12 couple of rednecks with a bulldozer out
8:13 so because of that the Doom Turtle
8:15 simply just wasn't needed anymore so
8:16 they stopped the project there was one
8:18 surviving prototype they gave that over
8:20 to Aberdine Proving Ground and they used
8:22 that basically as a giant weight to test
8:24 Transportation equipment because well it
8:26 was the heaviest tank they had and if it
8:27 could move the Doom Turtle it could move
8:29 anything else so they used it for that
8:31 for a little while then one day somebody
8:33 just parked in a field and everybody
8:34 forgot about it a little while after
8:36 that people started asking questions
8:38 historians the public museums like Hey
8:39 where's that badass tank we want to
8:41 preserve it we want to save it it's a
8:42 part of History we want to stick it in
8:44 our Museum let me have it so I can take
8:47 care of it and the arm is like I don't
8:49 know bro we lost it okay now on one hand
8:50 to be fair I'm pretty sure I know
8:51 exactly how this happened they just like
8:53 had a couple of dudes go park it they
8:54 made it take all day they parked it off
8:56 in a field those dudes like retired they
8:58 left they moved on and then nobody
9:00 remembered where it got parked okay like
9:02 I'm sympathetic to that I understand how
9:04 it happened but on the other hand how
9:07 the [ __ ] do you lose a 200,000 lb tank
9:09 that there's only one of like I would
9:10 understand if you were like oh hey we
9:13 misplaced a Sherman tank because America
9:16 made like 50,000 of them right but no
9:18 this isn't a Sherman tank it's twice the
9:19 size of a Sherman tank and there's only
9:21 one of them okay you could park it in a
9:23 parking lot full of tanks and you would
9:25 still be able to find it how on Earth
9:28 did you manage to lose a blue whale with
9:29 a gun attached to it okay okay Dude
9:33 Where's My Car where's your car
9:36 dude dude where's my car so that's it
9:38 it's just gone it's miia for the next 27
9:40 years nobody has any clue where this
9:42 thing is at and then one day some Hunter
9:44 is out in the woods near a military base
9:47 hunting and he's like hey there's a
9:54 bushes dude there's your car yeah you
9:56 guys thought I was being silly earlier
9:57 with that War Thunder ad didn't you when
9:59 I stuck a couple of bushes on this giant
10:00 tank and pretended like that was going
10:02 to conceal it well history is on my side
10:04 now because this [ __ ] was Incognito for
10:06 27 years because it had a couple of
10:08 bushes on it what now so the hunter goes
10:10 to the Army he's like hey I found this
10:11 weird looking tank in the bushes and
10:12 they're like oh [ __ ] we've been looking
10:14 for that thing so the Army then takes
10:15 the tank they give it to a museum in
10:17 Fort Knox so it's on display there for a
10:18 little while and then they decide
10:19 they're going to move it from Fort Knox
10:21 to Fort Benning or Fort more freedom
10:22 whatever the [ __ ] it's supposed to be
10:24 called now the home of the Infantry they
10:25 decide they're going to move it to the
10:26 Infantry Museum at the home of the
10:28 Infantry so they throw it on the hat
10:30 trailer The Heavy equipment trailer and
10:32 they tow it all the way to Georgia while
10:33 they're Towing it there apparently they
10:35 take a turn too hard and it breaks the
10:37 chains off the Head trailer and the
10:40 entire main cab of the tank flies into
10:41 the ditch now granted it was just the
10:43 main cab of the Doom Turtle so it didn't
10:45 have the two outermost tracks which is
10:46 like a significant amount of weight but
10:49 still the main cab is 60 tons flying off
10:50 your trailer into the ditch so that's
10:52 terrifying obviously the Doom Turtle
10:54 completely fine the paint got scuffed no
10:55 big deal get it back on the trailer they
10:57 get it where it's going now here's my
10:59 issue I know for a fact that the are
11:01 pictures of the Doom turtle in a ditch
11:03 somewhere in Georgia I need those
11:05 pictures someone has them on their cell
11:07 phone this happened in like 2017 2018
11:10 2019 somewhere around there I know one
11:12 of the drivers in that Convoy took a
11:13 picture of it with their smartphone it
11:15 has to have happened I want that picture
11:16 for history so I can get it to the
11:19 museum okay get me that picture what are
11:20 you waiting for Chinese New Year go go
11:22 go sorry so that's it that's that's the
11:23 end of the story they get it to the
11:25 National Infantry Museum and that is
11:27 where it is on display today so in
11:28 conclusion that's my favorite tank for
11:30 literally no reason other than it's
11:31 completely ridiculous and I think it's
11:33 funny literally from its Inception it
11:34 was just designed to be a giant middle
11:36 finger the enemy told America hey you
11:38 can't drive your tanks through here and
11:40 America said hold my defense budget and
11:42 watch this [ __ ] and this is the
11:44 monstrosity that they came up with okay
11:45 I don't know if you can give a tank
11:47 steroids or even test a tank for
11:49 steroids but if you can test that one
11:51 first now is it unfortunate that I never
11:53 saw combat yeah absolutely it's cool to
11:55 think about if it did however that
11:56 serves to highlight one of the most
11:58 important lessons that I teach on this
11:59 channel and that is is that the only
12:02 thing scarier than engineers and defense
12:04 contractors with an unlimited budget is
12:06 a bunch of infantry men on the ground
12:08 with time on their hands cuz that's what
12:09 actually gets [ __ ] done thank you for
12:10 watching best way to support the channel
12:12 is go by some merch over the fat
12:19 out man only the government could lose a
12:22 200,000 lb tank for 27 years currently
12:24 still be missing six nuclear warheads
12:26 and then tell me how dark I'm allowed to
