0:07 now as we open the word to luke chapter
0:10 1 let's bow in prayer
0:13 father thank you for the word of god
0:15 thank you for the holy spirit who wrote
0:18 it thank you we can trust the word of god
0:19 god
0:21 now help us as we study it and read it
0:23 together and may it become very
0:25 practical in our lives
0:26 some of our listeners are going through
0:29 difficult times they are burdened give
0:31 them a song today
0:33 as we study together we pray for the
0:35 spirit of god
0:37 to help us in jesus name amen
0:40 amen
0:42 what a contrast there is between
0:46 zacharias the old priest in jerusalem
0:49 and mary the humble jewish virgin from nazareth
0:50 nazareth
0:53 you'll recall that zacharias doubted
0:56 god's word and was struck dumb
0:59 luke chapter 1 and verse 20 gabriel said
1:02 to him and behold thou shalt be dumb and
1:04 not able to speak until the day that
1:07 these things shall be performed because
1:10 thou believeth not my words which shall
1:14 be fulfilled in their season
1:17 unbelief always closes our mouths
1:20 i believe therefore have i spoken said
1:23 the psalmist and paul quoted those words
1:26 faith opens your mouth in a song when
1:28 you believe god you want to praise god
1:31 well he doubted god's word but mary
1:34 believed god's word and she burst into
1:36 song as she visited the house of
1:39 elizabeth her kins woman
1:42 we're reading now from luke chapter 1
1:46 and verse 46 and mary said
1:50 my soul doth magnify the lord and my
1:54 spirit hath rejoiced in god my savior
1:57 for he hath regarded the low estate of
2:00 his handmaiden for behold from
2:03 henceforth all generations shall call me blessed
2:04 blessed
2:07 for he that is mighty hath done to me
2:11 great things and holy is his name
2:13 and his mercy is on them that fear him
2:16 from generation to generation
2:19 he hath shown strength with his arm
2:22 he hath scattered the proud in the
2:25 imagination of their hearts
2:27 he hath put down the mighty from their
2:32 seats and exalted them of low degree
2:35 he hath filled the hungry with good
2:38 things and the rich he hath sent empty away
2:39 away
2:42 he hath helped his servant israel in
2:45 remembrance of his mercy
2:48 as he spoke to our fathers to abraham
2:52 and to his seed forever now that is some song
2:53 song
2:55 and this song that mary sang really came
2:57 from her heart
2:59 it's a song that's filled with praise
3:02 and joy even though she knew she would
3:05 endure shame and suffering and and misunderstanding
3:07 misunderstanding
3:09 mary saying for the same reasons that
3:12 you and i ought to be singing today did
3:13 you notice that she sang because of salvation
3:15 salvation
3:18 verse 47 my spirit hath rejoiced in god
3:22 my savior mary was saved by faith by the
3:26 grace of god just as you and i are saved
3:28 by grace and through faith salvation
3:32 ought to give to us a song you know if
3:34 you aren't saved you have nothing to
3:35 sing about
3:38 oh you may join in the songs of this
3:39 world but they aren't going to last very long
3:40 long
3:42 it's interesting to note that we read a
3:44 great deal about
3:46 singing and praising in heaven not much
3:48 about preaching if anything at all
3:50 we preachers are not going to be doing a
3:52 lot of preaching up in heaven but we're
3:54 going to be doing a lot of singing and
3:57 let's get started today in being ready
4:00 to praise god she praised him because of
4:02 salvation she praised him because of the
4:05 holy spirit of god mary had been touched
4:08 by the holy spirit overshadowed by the
4:10 holy spirit and you know when the spirit
4:12 of god fills your life
4:14 you want to have a song
4:18 the word of god says in ephesians 5 18
4:21 and be not drunk with wine wherein is
4:24 excess but be filled with the spirit
4:26 speaking to yourselves in psalms and
4:29 hymns and spiritual songs singing and
4:33 making melody in your heart to the lord
4:36 mary had a song because of salvation and
4:38 because of the spirit and she had a song
4:40 because of the scriptures
4:43 when you read this beautiful hymn of
4:46 praise given in luke chapter 1
4:48 and when you trace the cross references
4:51 you discover that mary really knew her bible
4:52 bible
4:55 there are at least 15 old testament
4:58 illusions or quotations in
4:59 these few verses
5:01 now i don't think that mary owned a copy
5:03 of the old testament scripture she was a poor
5:04 poor
5:07 maiden from nazareth and the jewish
5:09 people didn't own bible such as we do today
5:10 today
5:12 but she had the word in her heart that's
5:14 why she sang
5:18 colossians chapter 3 says in verse 16
5:21 let the word of christ dwell in you
5:24 richly in all wisdom teaching and
5:26 admonishing one another in psalms and
5:29 hymns and spiritual songs singing with
5:31 grace in your hearts to the lord because
5:34 mary's heart was filled with the word of
5:37 god she had a song
5:39 well here are three reasons why mary was
5:42 singing because of salvation and because
5:44 of the spirit and because of the
5:46 scriptures it's interesting to note how
5:50 her song parallels the song of hannah
5:53 back in first samuel chapter 2
5:55 when hannah was told she was going to
5:57 have a son and she brought that son and
6:00 gave him to the lord what a joyful
6:03 experience it was and she sang praises
6:06 to god well mary knew that song mary
6:08 identified with hannah in that
6:11 experience if you and i are saved if
6:13 we're filled with the holy spirit and if
6:15 we're filled with the scriptures with
6:16 the word of god we're going to have a song
6:17 song
6:19 but there's a fourth reason why mary
6:21 sang and that's because she was
6:23 surrendered to the lord
6:24 you know it's wonderful to know the
6:26 scriptures but if we aren't surrendered
6:29 to do the word of god we don't have a song
6:30 song
6:33 verse 38 of luke chapter 1 mary said
6:36 behold the handmaid of the lord the
6:40 slave of the lord be it unto me
6:44 according to thy word oh i should pray
6:46 that prayer every day lord here's your
6:47 slave now
6:51 run my life according to your word
6:53 you see mary surrendered herself
6:56 completely to the lord in verse 38 she
6:58 gave the lord her body she said here i
7:01 am i'm going to be your slave here is my
7:03 body and the holy spirit of god
7:06 overshadowed her body and she conceived
7:09 the very son of god in her womb but she
7:13 also gave god her soul verse 46 mary
7:16 said my soul doth magnify the lord and
7:20 she gave god her spirit verse 47 and my
7:23 spirit hath rejoiced in god my savior in
7:26 other words spirit soul and body
7:30 mary was completely yielded to the lord
7:33 and that is what opened up those deep
7:36 wellsprings of joy so that mary had a
7:39 song for the lord
7:41 now if you don't have a song today it
7:42 may be you aren't saved you need to
7:44 trust jesus
7:47 he hath put a new song in my heart even
7:50 praise unto my god
7:52 when you trust the lord jesus he gives
7:54 you a song or it may be you're grieving
7:56 the holy spirit there's something in
7:58 your life that's grieving god's spirit
8:00 well you can't have the joy of the lord
8:02 if you're grieving the spirit of the
8:04 lord or it may be that we are ignoring
8:07 the word of god if we don't have god's
8:10 word dwelling in us richly
8:13 richly in in great abundance we really
8:16 will not be able to praise the lord and
8:18 if we're not surrendered maybe there's
8:20 some rebellion in our lives
8:22 you know folks go to church to worship
8:24 god and they're standing there in the
8:25 congregation singing but they're just
8:27 going through the motions it's not
8:29 really coming from their hearts well it
8:32 came from mary's heart because she knew
8:35 the lord and was yielded to him now it's
8:37 interesting to note that this song does
8:39 not praise mary
8:42 it magnifies the lord verse 46 of luke
8:46 chapter 1 and mary said my soul doth
8:50 magnify the lord eight times in this
8:53 song you find mary saying he hath he
8:56 hath she tells what god has done
8:59 what god has done in his mercy and in
9:02 his grace it magnifies the lord in fact
9:05 there are three stanzas to this hymn
9:07 and in each stanza mary tells us
9:09 something that god has done and
9:10 and
9:13 magnifies the work of the lord
9:15 now it's interesting to note that mary
9:16 points out
9:20 three recipients of the grace and mercy
9:23 of god i want you to notice this now in
9:27 verses 46 through 49 she tells what god
9:30 has done for her so the first stanza
9:34 focuses on what god has done for mary
9:37 verses 46 through 49
9:41 and then in verses 50 through 53 she
9:44 focuses on what god has done for all who
9:45 fear him
9:48 notice in verse 50 and his mercy is on
9:51 them that fear him from generation to
9:53 generation that includes us
9:57 we are included in mary's song and so in
10:00 verses 46 through 49 what god did for
10:02 mary verses
10:06 50-53 what god is doing for us all who
10:11 fear him and then verses 54 and 55
10:15 what he has done for his people israel
10:17 notice then the three recipients of the
10:21 blessings of god mary verses 46 through
10:26 49 all who fear him verses 50 through 53
10:31 and then his people israel verses 54 and 55
10:32 55
10:36 let's look right now at what god did for
10:39 mary verses 46 through 49.
10:42 she makes two statements about god's
10:45 blessing in her life number one
10:48 god has been mindful of her
10:52 and mary said my soul doth magnify the lord
10:53 lord
10:57 and my spirit hath rejoiced in god my
10:59 savior for
11:02 he hath regarded the lowest state of his
11:05 handmaiden for behold from henceforth
11:08 all generations shall call me blessed
11:11 god has been mindful of her and that
11:13 word regard means to
11:16 look with favor
11:19 it means to be mindful of someone
11:22 it means that god looked with a smile
11:25 upon her back in verse 28 the angel
11:28 gabriel said this hail thou who art
11:31 highly favored the lord is with thee
11:34 verse 30 fear not mary for thou hast
11:38 found favor with god she says i'm
11:41 rejoicing because god is mindful of me
11:43 now why be mindful of mary after all who
11:46 was she number one she was a woman now
11:48 you must remember that back in this
11:50 society women were not looked upon with
11:53 with great regard but here she was a
11:55 woman a jewish woman who came from
11:59 nazareth engaged to a poor carpenter and
12:02 she was a poor woman and really there
12:04 was nothing special about mary that god
12:06 should regard her well is there anything
12:07 special about us
12:10 the psalmist said in psalm 8 and verse 4
12:13 what is man that thou art mindful of him
12:16 or the son of man that thou visites him
12:18 who are we that god should look with
12:20 favor upon us well the only reason he's
12:23 done it is because of jesus christ
12:26 we are accepted in the beloved we have
12:29 received grace because of jesus christ
12:32 when god looks upon us he doesn't see
12:33 creatures made of clay
12:36 he doesn't see people who rebel against
12:39 his word he looks upon man and my bible
12:42 says god so loved the world
12:45 and you know in the word of god
12:48 we have emphasized the grace of god god
12:50 doesn't save us because we're so good
12:53 and god doesn't bless us because we're
12:56 so worthy listen to what paul wrote to
12:57 the corinthians in first corinthians
13:01 chapter 1 verse 27 but god hath chosen
13:02 the foolish things of the world to
13:04 confound the wise
13:06 and god hath chosen the weak things of
13:08 the world to confound the things which
13:09 are mighty
13:12 and base things of the world and things
13:15 which are despised god hath chosen yea
13:18 and things which are not
13:21 to bring to naught the things that are
13:25 why that no flesh should glory in his
13:26 presence that's why she's magnifying the
13:29 lord she said i'm magnifying the lord
13:32 because god is mindful of me have you
13:34 done that lately have you lifted your
13:36 heart in praise to god because he's
13:38 mindful of of you
13:41 and secondly mary said i'm praising the
13:44 lord because god is mighty for me notice
13:47 what she says in verse 49 and he that is
13:51 mighty hath done to me great things and
13:53 holy is his name
13:55 mary was one of many people in the bible
13:59 who could sing great things he hath done
14:02 jesus sent that demoniac home luke
14:04 chapter 8 verse 39 and said now you go
14:07 home and tell those people what great
14:10 things god has done for you
14:12 samuel said this to the jewish nation
14:13 didn't he and
14:14 and
14:18 so did david when he spoke out
14:21 to the glory of the lord as you go
14:23 through scripture you find many people saying
14:24 saying
14:27 great things he has done listen to first
14:30 samuel 12 24 only fear the lord and
14:33 serve him in truth with all your heart
14:36 for consider how great things he hath
14:39 done for you samuel said that
14:42 listen to what david said first samuel 7
14:45 21 for thy word's sake and according to
14:48 thine own heart hast thou done all these
14:52 great things to make thy servant know thee
14:53 thee
14:56 well god is mindful of us and god is
14:59 mighty toward us god has shared with us
15:02 his love and his grace and his power the
15:06 lord hath done great things for us said
15:07 the psalmist
15:11 whereof we are glad psalm 126
15:13 and verse 3.
15:15 are you rejoicing today because god is
15:17 mindful of you
15:21 and because god is mighty for you
15:24 i trust that you will it will change
15:30 thank you for listening to back to the bible
15:31 bible
15:33 join us again tomorrow
15:36 god bless you [Music]
