0:09 hello welcome to get your mind on I'm
0:13 Lori stos every day we make many many
0:15 decisions as a leader you think of all
0:17 the decisions you make every day from
0:19 the minute you wake up till the minute
0:21 you go to bed everything from the simple
0:24 things of what we choose to eat to who's
0:27 on your team to tough decisions within
0:29 the business every day so how do you
0:30 make those
0:33 decisions some of us are more process
0:35 oriented with our decisions we think
0:38 about step to step uh what we should do
0:40 what type of decision it is Who's
0:43 involved who needs to be involved who
0:46 whose opinion counts what resources or
0:48 what information do we need or some of
0:50 us are a little bit more of shoot by The
0:52 Hip we're pretty confident we've had a
0:55 lot of experience we do this every day
0:57 and most of the decisions we make we can
0:58 make on the
1:02 Fly and that takes confidence right so
1:04 there's confidence in all of decision-
1:05 making and we all do it a little bit
1:06 differently but have you stepped back to
1:08 think about what is your decisionmaking
1:10 process as a leader it's really
1:12 important for people to know and
1:13 understand that it's important to make
1:15 decisions because sometimes when you
1:18 think back you think maybe uh uh you get
1:21 into that analysis paralysis mode
1:22 sometimes when there are decisions that
1:24 are tough and difficult we have to stop
1:26 back and think about how do we go
1:27 through that and do we need enough
1:29 information and when is too much
1:31 information and when do we need to make
1:32 that decision so there's a timing
1:35 element also involved in making
1:37 decisions so decision- making is an
1:39 important part of our life and when we
1:41 as a leader make decisions I think it's
1:43 important for us to be um people are
1:45 watching us again we're modeling
1:47 behavior and how do we make those
1:49 decisions and how do we really delegate
1:52 also decision- making to others Susan
1:54 Scott who wrote Fierce leadership has a
1:56 really neat analogy about decision
1:58 making that you might think about for
2:01 yourself as well as others all of the
2:03 decisions that we make every day um
2:05 affect an organization can hurt or harm
2:07 an organization but let's talk about
2:10 what those levels of decisions are so
2:12 she uses an analogy of a tree so if you
2:15 can imagine a tree there's Leaf
2:17 decisions Branch
2:20 decisions trunk decisions and root
2:23 decisions we think about Leaf decisions
2:25 those are those small take a leaf off
2:27 right it's not going to kill the tree um
2:29 you can make that quick decision um you
2:31 can go ahead and act on it and really
2:33 there needs to be you know unless it's a
2:34 big decision that your team needs to
2:36 know those are things we don't need to
2:39 necessarily be communicating to everyone
2:41 then we have a branch decision Branch
2:43 decisions are decisions we should also
2:45 act on but probably report to people
2:47 what those decisions are on a consistent
2:50 basis whether that's weekly or monthly
2:52 um what those decisions are then we have
2:54 trunk decisions and those decisions are
2:57 a little bit deeper right we need to act
2:59 on those but we need to make sure that
3:00 others are involved in that decision and
3:02 we're we're telling people how it might
3:05 affect them and then we have the root
3:08 decisions the root decisions are deep um
3:10 decisions that affect the organization
3:12 on a big level right a root decision
3:14 could be great for an organization but
3:16 it could be very harmful if we don't
3:17 take enough time so usually we got to
3:20 pull a lot of people in and get a lot
3:22 good conversation and dialogue going and
3:25 good research going to make those
3:27 decisions so when you think about those
3:29 types of decisions that might help you
3:31 if you're who has a tendency to get
3:34 stuck is what level of decision is this
3:36 is it a decision that's easily made is
3:37 it a leaf decision that you know what I
3:39 just make the decision to move forward
3:41 or is it that right decision and we know
3:44 when those decisions are pretty tough
3:45 but sometimes we need to think about
3:47 what is our confidence level in that
3:49 decision-making process so if we're not
3:53 one a leader to have that confidence
3:54 maybe think about how can I increase
3:56 that level of confidence throughout that
3:58 leadership process and I think it's very
4:01 important also just to again to be high
4:02 in communication when we think about our
4:04 decision-making process and helping
4:07 people know and understand when we make
4:09 decisions what that means because it's
4:12 important um to build other leaders
4:14 within our you know constituent group
4:16 and within our direct rep reports we
4:18 think about that decision-making process
4:20 because we want them to be confident and
4:22 be able to make decisions as well so
4:24 they may do it different than we so I
4:26 think that's one thing to think about is
4:26 sometimes you have people who are a
4:28 little bit more cautious a little bit
4:30 more deliberative and understand that
4:32 that's their style okay and that's where
4:34 you as a leader need to come in and help
4:36 them be more confident and feel good
4:38 about those decisions and you know what
4:41 every decision doesn't work out and I
4:42 think that's the importance of a leader
4:45 when we make those decisions that we sit
4:48 back and and you know Ponder why and
4:50 have those discussions and let them know
4:52 that it's okay to make a bad decision
4:54 sometimes it happens so really it's it's
4:57 showing others that we all are human um
4:58 hopefully we make the right decisions
5:00 but sometimes things happen so it's
5:02 really how we as a leader respond to
5:04 that that's important for our people to
5:06 understand their their confidence in decision
5:07 decision
5:09 making so for positive charge this week
5:12 think about your decision-making process
5:14 where do you fall on decision- making
5:17 number one what's your style are you a
5:19 more process oriented individual or are
5:20 you a little bit more shoot from the
5:23 hip two are you reaching the outcomes
5:25 you want to reach on those
5:28 decisions if not you should stop and
5:30 evaluate maybe you do need a process if
5:31 you are normally a shoot from the HP
5:34 person if it's not working for you and
5:36 three is are you growing other people to
5:40 make decisions think about how or who
5:42 this week you could maybe grow um to
5:44 build their decision-making
5:46 ability decision- making is so essential
5:48 in our day-to-day lives and Leadership
5:51 of companies and our organizations and
5:53 the people that we have following us so
5:54 take some time to think about your
5:57 decision-making capability and help
5:59 others grow in theirs thank you for
