Hi, thank you for joining this short
interview. My name is Norani Arisa. I'm
doing this for assignment about
communication and culture. I just want
to ask you a few simple question about
your culture.
First, uh can you can you introduce yourself?
yourself?
>> Okay. So thank you first of all uh
taking time to interview me. My name is
Sashna Burma and I'm come from uh
cultural and rich in my Indian
background. So various Indian uh
community is the minority compared to
the majority community in this uh
country. Yeah.
>> What your culture and relig religious
background do you come from?
Okay. So as I affiration I'm uh I'm in
Tamil culture where in Indian culture
itself we have a lot of uh divides uh
especially we have Tamil Tu Mallayam and
we have a lot of uh religious and I'm
from the Tamil background. So from my
culture itself we actually taught to
respect our parents. we need to follow
our traditions and also we need to
follow the etiquets that uh my religion
told me to do. So uh so especially we
need to respect the olders. We need to
have the good attitude and manner when
we talk to others. Uh so yeah. >> All right.
How would you describe the communication
style in your culture?
>> Okay. So since I'm from the Tamil
background, so we currently we will use
uh Tamil language as our primary
language uh despite uh Bahasa Malaysia
and also English. Yeah. >> Um
>> Um
what values are considered important in
your culture?
>> Okay. So what are considered important?
Yeah. Okay. So if consideration is
higher I would say about uh the values
that instill from my from my childhood
itself especially uh when we are
converse with our friends we need to use
proper language okay without um we we
don't need uh we we are restrained from
using any bad words uh and also we need
to have a good converse with uh friends
and also Um those who like uh elderly
people we need to always uh uh shook
hand uh before we talk anything we need
to what we need to
wait a moment.
So we need to like uh respect so when we
talk so currently these are the core
values that um I'm currently practicing
and I hope I doing my best in my culture.
culture.
Um how would you describe the family
structure in your culture?
Okay, family structure itself uh
actually like uh of course it's from our
ancestors and also um what I can say is
the elderly people always cultivate
their norm especially when when eating
you need to have a proper etiquette and
also when we talk to others as I said
before and also we did uh if we are uh
what we call if we are decision we we if
we are want to uh do a decision making
process we need to ask elderly people
first before we anything we decided for.
So yeah so that's my family structure
it's especially rich in my culture.
>> Um have you experienced culture shock?
um culture shock yes because I'm
currently a UNC student from UPSI
so uh in UPSi itself we have a lot of uh
uh students from different different
background and of course as university
student first of all we were like
culture shock because of their language
right because um I also have a language
barrier when they talk other than the
primary languages that spoken in in Malaysia
Malaysia
uh like example Bas Malaysia English. So
rather than these languages like they
use Plantanis or they use any Tan
slangs. So I would be um a big culture
shock because I couldn't speak or
converse with them uh as well. So yeah
and also their culture is too too
different from my culture itself. So
yeah simply yes.
>> Next question.
And does your religion influence how you communicate?
communicate?
Um yes of course because my religion is
actually uh taught me to be how to uh
how to be patient while doing any uh any
stuffs and also I also avoid to talk
with somebody who didn't respect me
because I I think uh what my religion
taught me is if one person didn't
respect you you are you are tend to be
silent is the as key uh for show for us
to show our success silently to them
because when we uh when we debating with
them for those who like um uh always
hurting us I think the only thing we can
repay them back is by success. So I
think when I converse when I communicate
and it's really impact my religion
itself. So um based on my religion I
will always try to avoid hurting others
despite I will always be silent and I
will show my success to others who
always hurting me behind. Yeah.
>> Okay. Last question. How do you adapt
when communicating with other culture?
>> Okay. So as I uh talked before about the
culture shock. So how I will be adapt is
when um I'm converse with my other
friends right this uh where they use a
lot of slangs uh from the continent uh
continent state so I will always try to
adapt with them by always converse
because when we communicate every time
it will like absorb in your mind the
words that they using kept use keep
using uh it's always instilled in my
mind and it tend to be like uh okay the
word is what so I will ask for them
every time what is the meaning behind it
so I can use that word when I converse
with them so it can actually uh slowly I
can uh learn about their languages and
for the culture also I also always go
with them uh shopping everything right
and I we also share foods from their
culture itself so I will adjust um
everything like example I'm Indian and
my friend is Malay so uh I can know
about the halal way how how the meats
are slaughtered in a halal way how they
eat uh in a halal way method so I can
understand it more and I also understand
oh this is how they are normal to be so
I can understand and I also try to adapt
with them because we are one Malaysia
right so we need to add that and for
Chinese culture also I always converse
with them and I I'm a basic mandarin
speaker so I also try to adapt with them
using Chinese words something like that
so yeah so I will keep adapting and also
I will observe the way of communication
that they have and also I will
understand from the both side each other
well because I'm trying uh every day
using their language and I will try my
best to converse with them freely after
this Yeah,
>> thank you for sharing your culture.
