How you doing? Gates.
It's Dominics line.
>> I see everything in front of me.
I would like to be on the ball as many
times as I can. Everybody can have a
good game, but if we don't perform as a
team, then it won't help. [Music]
>> Hi Dom, welcome to the breakdown. Thank
you for joining us. We're going to look
at a few clips of yours. I mean, this is
probably one of the reasons why, well,
the many reasons why you guys won the
Premier League last year. If you look at
that midfield three of yourself, Ryan,
and Alexis, that was kind of I think the
midfield is is the heart of almost any
team and you guys almost played all the
massive games. Yeah, we came in um two
years ago and um I think
didn't know each other but uh in a quick
time we we knew each other and um and me
and Maka were playing also under under
Jurgen you know um and Ryan obviously
when when the gaffa came in and he got
his chances then he showed his quality
and directly had even more minutes than
both of us so but yeah we it's it's It's
it's very good to play with them. I
think depending on who you're playing
with, you adjust your position, don't
you? Alexis is obviously, you know,
could be a 10 with Argentino, Brighton,
and Ryan, I think, is probably, you
know, I think even the is Academy played
as a 10. So, I think it's interesting
the way you guys have all kind of found
your position cuz your strengths are all
different, aren't they? Yeah. But that's
the I think that's the best thing
because Ryan can play as you said, 8,
six, 10, whatever. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Maka same, me same. So, even if we move
on the pitch and just switch positions,
then then I know what to do at the six
or at the eight and uh both of them
knows what to do in the different positions.
positions.
>> We've got a couple little clips of you
kind of out of possession.
I mean, even there, I mean, you think at
the obviously at the edge of the box,
you're like the safety net, aren't you? >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Kind of stopping the counter. I love I
love this clip because there's actually
so much detail in it. I'm going to run
it real slow. Like even here, you're
thinking you got it covered. But watch
this. Watch this little back here.
You're already, you know, the
counterattack is on and he and he and he
hasn't even played the ball. I love this
clip because it actually just shows kind
of the awareness and then obviously you
got to get there. You check your
shoulder. But I think out of possession
is such an important part of of the
modern game now, isn't it?
>> Yeah. And even there you you know you
get you get back twice bodied him you're
out of possession is would you say is
one of your best attributes? I think so.
I have I think maybe shooting wise I'm
quite okay. uh also to see in a the
football in a different way maybe I can
say I can say like this but yeah of
course uh you need to you need to work hard
hard
>> but I think probably as a kid you were
like the you were the 10 w you shooting creating
creating
>> have you had to learn kind of
>> you know being in these champions league
teams actually
>> out of possession is almost as important
as kind of goals and assists
>> luckily I I grew up in in in Austria in
Hsburg uh also and then after one I went
to LIIC. So I think in this Red Bull
>> school you you got to press don't you?
>> Yes. You get used to it and if you don't
do it you're just out. You can be as
good as you want with the ball but if
you don't do it then you're out and
>> I had I had coaches who are like really
only this if you do that you have the quality.
quality.
>> The other stuff happens doesn't it?
>> Yeah. So you have to do this and then
you're going to have the quality to do
the other stuff
>> because that's you have
>> but maybe you don't have enough uh yet
against the ball or >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> or um just in running wise, pressing
wise and this this kind of stuff. So
this is the one you have to learn first
and then everything else you have it
already. Yeah. I mean this this season's
obviously been very different. We spoke
about Ryan and and Alexis. You guys had
this amazing partnership. I mean, this
is this is against Frankfurt when I
think did the gaffer go 442.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> So, you and Curtis were in the center of
the pitch. I love the fact that you're
so keen to press, aren't you? Because
that's obviously one of the things
you're doing actually so well,
>> but actually once you go in there and
cuz Curtis is probably a little bit too
far to the right hand side. Once you go
in, there's obviously that space there.
And I think probably last season would
you say Ryan would probably would have
been in there but I think now because of
you've got you've got Florian and you
know Curtis playing in there obviously
you've had some different personnel the
balance has probably not been like last
season so people are adjusting to each
other even that you bumping into Curtis.
Well, I think this situation was the
only one in the game when we got >> open
>> open
>> outplayed or Yeah. opened because
>> 44 for two. First time we played um
probably me and Curtis sometimes we are
like as you said overload more the right
because we thought we're going to be
three in the middle. Yeah.
>> So if one goes out you have still two. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> But no if one goes out and we will four
for two then it's only one more and it
was me.
>> So we opened up um quite quite a lot.
But after this situation happened, I think
think
>> the game was over. Yeah. Yeah. You guys
had them under complete control.
>> This is this is the team that kind of
started against Brenford. Just talk me
through kind of the differences for you
because I think this season, you know,
you you've kind of played you've played
in you've played in a two. You've you've
probably played as a 10. We know you've
played here as a right back. How has it
been this season for you kind of playing
all these different positions? because
pretty much everybody else is playing
their position and you've probably been
Liverpool's best player this season, but
actually you've played well at least
three positions that I know of.
>> As I said many times, if the gaff want
if the gaffa wants uh want to put me as
a right back because obviously um
Jeremy's injured now. Um Connor is is
able to play three games in seven days,
but also he got he was injured uh a
couple of times. So maybe he doesn't
want to risk it or something and he
going to put me there. Not a problem at
all. But yeah, I'm a midfielder.
>> Would you say as a kid I'm guessing
Craig, you you were there? >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> The game probably ran
>> as as a kid I we used to play like a six
and two eights and I was one of the
eights, you know.
>> For do you prefer the left coming in on
your right or would you say you prefer
the right to cross it? It does not matter.
matter.
>> That's doesn't really matter. Obviously
every right footed player would like to
play on the left because you can come in
and shoot. Yeah, that's that's normal.
But um as you said it before, when you
play as a 10, then you receive the balls
already here. So that means behind you
is already somewhere so you cannot turn
and shoot. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So when I played last season,
everybody's asking me to shoot more. I
say, yeah, I would like to because
that's what I love to do as well. But
I'm already here and if you play me with
the ball behind me someone, so I can't
actually. But when I'm deeper then I'm I
can get the ball from Virgil or from Ibu
maybe and even from from 25 m they will
not attack me or from 30 they they won't
jump out maybe then I can shoot couple
of times and then I shoot couple of
times then they will jump out
>> and then I can play the deep passes.
>> Yeah. I mean that's a beautiful thing I
think when you when you play here if you
get it from say Verge or you could you
got the big switch you got the one into
the 10 but if you get up here I think
this is where your passing and your
crossing and your your ability to see a
pass you could be lethal because I think
from here like you said you can you can
link you can shoot you can cross I see
everything in front of me then I can see
stuff but what what maybe Virgil uh is
not always seeing or Ibu is not always see
see
>> uh they can play obviously the long
balls and switch the site, but um yeah,
this this kind of pass back and then
chip on the other side and this kind of
stuff. So, I would like to be on the
ball as many times as I can. But I think
that's probably one of the things about
having a player like you that's so
versatile. I think Anna knows you'll do
a job whether you play right back there
as a 10 or or deeper. And I think that
is like a safety net for a manager to
know that I know Dom's going to do a job
for me. you need guys like this that
they can actually you can play them in
multiple positions but they they still
you know do the job kind of to the level
that is required and it's not so much
about Dom or Florian or or Virgil it's
actually about Liverpool in the team
isn't it so and I think sacrificing is
is one of the hardest things I think for
players when they come to a team like
even for Florian he's a special player
isn't he actually finding his role in in
this Liverpool team is it takes time
yeah of course of course well we we are
I mean if I say we are not under
pressure that that's weird but they have
time but yeah um we have to we have to
find a solution as a team because he can
have a good game mil can have a good
game uh whatever everybody can have a
good game but if you don't perform as a
team then then it won't help
>> I mean you guys have some super special
players obviously Ekatik is a fantastic
player's a great player Florian is a
special player obviously Mo, I mean,
we're getting Premier League player of
the year, you know, obviously Verge is
the best. So, I think with all these
pieces of the puzzle, the potential to
be, you know, to win the Premier League
and win the Champions League is still
there. Like you said, it's just about
making it a team again.
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's that's the main point.
point.
>> Well, uh, I want to thank you for
joining us on the breakdown. I want to
wish you all the best of luck for the
rest of the season. Thank you.
