The chapter on grammar and syntax, presented as the most extensive section of a language curriculum, aims to foster a deep, conscious understanding of language structure through engaging, hands-on activities, moving from informal absorption to formal study.

all right
the introduction to grammar and syntax
so the chapter in grammar and syntax is
going to be
the thickest section in your language album
album
but that's only because most of the
concrete materials we have
for language are in this section in our classroom
classroom
all of the chapters in language are
running parallel to one another
and when we think about our album in the
organization the way that it's organized
is to help with
our adult um
thought process and planning and
tracking and all of those things for the children
children
we just invite them to another lesson
right and we make sure that we're
covering the history of language along with
with
beautification of language and reading
and all of those things
all at the same time including grammar
and syntax
the parts within the chapter of grammar
and syntax are word study
the parts of speech which we explore
mostly with the grammar boxes but with
some other
uh card activities and work charts right
but the parts of speech
and logical analysis which is where we
look at the parts of a sentence
in the casa the child has hopefully
had the experience of being introduced
to the key aspects of grammar
but this isn't done in a formal way it's done
done
as function of word activities where the
child's really given
a physical
experience that highlights the
function that the word plays in our language
language
hopefully the child's also had an
introduction to
word study and reading analysis
which is um different than
sentence analysis but builds on the same
framework right
now if that hasn't happened of course
you meet the child
where he is and greet him there and move
forward along with him
the young child learns the grammar and
syntax of his language
um by just living in the environment
takes it in through the absorbent mind
and we'll begin to use grammar more or less
less
correctly and be able to understand what
others are hearing
or are saying to him and in the first
plane all of this is really informal
but in the second plane of development
we're going to take these ideas into a
formal study
it's a delving into an understanding of
our own mother tongue that's how it's designed
designed
right so we begin by looking at words
with word study right and how
interesting words are
in and of themselves just
by adding a little bit onto the end of a word
word
we can change the meaning or change its function
function
we look at individual words and then say well
well
what if we add the suffix
or a prefix what if we put two words
together and make a compound
word right it's possible the children
have been introduced to the sim
in the casa but if not they love doing
it in the elementary
and those early word study lessons
provide a lot of movement and a lot of
practice with holding things in our head
and our working memory which is one of
those executive function skills
right so we show children
also that words carry out a special
function now in the casa we call that
function of words and here we're going
to look at it as the parts of speech
we also introduce the names of each of
those parts of speech
so while the child might have had the
experience with
words that tell us what to do or how to
move our bodies
right we're now going to name
those as verbs right
we continue using the same grammar
symbols as the child has been introduced
to in the casa but we add a couple
in the casa um the children have not been
been
introduced yet to the pronoun or [Music]
[Music] to
to
you think i would have this oh the interjection
interjection
i do know it's fine um
and so those haven't been introduced yet
and those will be new symbols for the
children but the rest of the symbols
have been
and the symbols provide a nice bridge
between the casa work
and the elementary work
in the elementary we're a bit more
formal with our study of the parts of speech
speech
because we have to understand the rules
of grammar in our language
an understanding of grammar and syntax
leads to clearer thinking and more reasoned
reasoned
thinking to be able to say what we mean
and mean what we say takes an
understanding of grammar and syntax
so in the elementary we work to bring
the child to a fully
conscious understanding of grammar that
the english language uses
now if i were giving this course in
another language
it wouldn't be grammar we were exploring
of english but of another language
but here since i'm giving the course in
english that's what we will be exploring
in the elementary classroom the main
material we use to facilitate our understanding
understanding
of grammar in the context
of parts of speech
are the grammar boxes
the grammar boxes have multiple filler
boxes that are full of cards
and they for many of the parts of the
speech we also have
command cards these work
really well with the psychological
characteristics of the second plane child
child
and they're very appealing and here's
the thing grammar boxes are only fun
the phrases or sentences are already
printed on the card
and that's different than what the
children might have seen in casa in casa
the teacher would write it all out for them
them
but here they're already written
out and so the grammar boxes can really
aid the
child's reading ability and
reading comprehension and gives a lot of
practice with the subtlety of the
language especially when we get to the
later filler boxes in the command
cards there are actions
to be carried out and the child reads
what the card says
puts it out in small cards and then does
it and that's really exciting and fun
for the children in addition
to um
the fact that the children are reading
the card
and putting it out in small cards what
putting it out in small cards allows us
to do
is to um isolate
each of the different words which is each
each
each word is functioning as a part of
speech in the sentence and really look
at what is that word doing
in the context of this sentence and
that's important for english
where it is in the work it's doing
within the sentence actually determines
the part of speech
there are very few parts of speech that
are always that
there are some but there are very few
um we give the name of the part of the speech
speech
right and so we say what the function in
the sentence is we give the symbol and
then we give the name of the part of the
speech in the
elementary and this allows the child to
further classify the information within
now we have to remember the purpose of
the grammar boxes is not to
teach the rules of grammar it's to
excite the children about understanding
the language and continuing to know more
about it
and to discover which kinds of words
do what job and children
children love grammar if we approach it
in this way if we make it boring if we
force them to write the grammar boxes
and just copy them down they're going to
like grammar but if you
implement the study of grammar and
syntax the way that it's being offered
on the course
the children will absolutely love
learning more about their language
we're working with the reasoning mind
here right
it's not just that
this word is this part of speech but why
is it classified as that part of speech
and is there a way to classify it
further oh it's an article
but what kind of article and why do you
say that that's really interesting for
the children
and then being able to break the rules
when we're doing our writing and being
creative and being expressive
we have to know the rules to be able to
bend them and to be able to break them
so the command cards
typically follow the grammar box of that
part of speech and they just give
an extension of the work they extend the
child's vocabulary
and enrich the child's vocabulary
concrete physical fun experiences
with that particular part of speech dr
montessori wrote about psycho grammar
and that's not out in english yet but it
will be
and it's about a psychological approach
the same way that psychoarithmetica is
about a psychological approach to math and
and
psychogeometry is a psychological
approach to
geometry um dr montessori talks in
psycho grammar
about the philosophy of grammar
that it's not just rules and dry
definition it's allowing the children to really
really
experience and manipulate
grammar in order to come to understand
the concept or the definition that
