in the battle of the Blackwater surandon
Moore tries to kill Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion survives and emerges wondering
who was behind it all so who was hi
everyone this is Robert welcome to inep
geek on this channel we cover A Song of
Ice and Fire In Depth as well as the
other parts of Georgia Martin's wider
World Of Ice And Fire Game of Thrones
House of the dragon and Duncan egg if
that sounds good there's a subscribe
button around here somewhere this video
is jointly produced with history of
westros please do check out their
excellent podcast and YouTube channel
there's a link in the
description amongst the many literary
genres that georgea Martin has mixed
into A Song of Ice and Fire is the
classic who done it or murder mystery we
have the attempt on Bran's life and The
Saga of the cats pow dagger the
successful murder of John Aaron where
the reader is kept in the dark as to who
done it for a long time and so on on
both of those examples we think we now
have some kind of resolution but on the
attempted murder of Tyrion we don't
which doesn't stop us guessing of course
and indeed it doesn't stop Tyrion
himself from trying to work out who was
behind it but first let's quickly remind
ourselves of the scene stannis's Fleet
and forces are attacking King's Landing
and Tyrion who is leading the defense of
King's Landing has launched his cunning
plan with the wildfire and the chain
across the mouth of the river that
worked as planned but still stannis's
forces are taking the fight to the
Lannisters in fact at this stage it
looks like they might win the Defenders
of King's Landing are starting to panic
and flee in their hundreds turning on
their own commanders even the Hound has
quit the battle and now the wrecks of
several ships have Tangled together on
the Blackwater forming a bridge of sorts
over the river allowing even more of
stannis's forces to cross over and
attack the city in the last desperate
move Tyrion himself leads a
Counterattack finding himself on that
bridge of ships which is now breaking
apart he falls and sandon Moore the
member of the King's Guard who had been
by his side throughout the battle offers
his hand to help then with no warning
attacks Tyrion Tyrion Dodges but still
gets cut across the face that's how he
loses his nose and gets that scar pod
who is also there comes to the rescue
and sandon ends up sinking to the bottom
of the river weighed down by his armor
okay so that's what happened let's start
our investigation by considering the
simplest candidate of all sandon himself
is it likely that he just decided to use
the chaos of the battle to kill Tyrion
for his own reasons Tyrion doesn't think
so instantly deciding that he had never
done sandon any harm that might have
provoked that which is probably Fair
although he hadn't exactly been a friend
to him when Tyrion first arrived at
King's Landing as acting hand he had to
threaten sandon with Brun and shagger to
gain access access to the council
chamber and after that rioting King's
Landing earlier in the book he had tried
to shame sandon for leaving Sansa behind
although that came to nothing because as
Cersei pointed out he did so in order to
protect the King which was his duty as a
member of the King's Guard so on balance
Tyrion is probably right here he may not
have been a particular Ally for sandon
but he also hadn't done anything so bad
to him that might make sandon Risk
Everything to try to kill him might
there be some other motive we don't know
about we can't discount it his entire
character is set up as a bit of a
mystery Sansa thinks that he has a
curiously Dead face and jaim thought
that he was the most dangerous member of
the King's Guard save himself because
his face never gave a hint of his
intentions we don't know much about his
background he was brought to King's
Landing by John Aaron and appointed to
the King's Guard by Robert Baratheon but
neither particularly liked him he also
wasn't particular particularly close to
any of his brothers in the King's Guard
all in all a bit of a mystery so perhaps
at some point we'll learn more but for
now there is no actual reason to think
he did have any motive to kill Tyrion
hence Tyrion being convinced that
someone had hired him to do it but who
well the truth is that Tyrion made a lot
of enemies in King's Landing in his
short time there so the list of
potential suspects is quite long but his
first thought was Cersei and it's easy
to see why the two of them had been at
loggerheads all of tyrion's life she had
been a terror to him when he was a child
and now as adults things had got even
more serious for almost all of a Clash
of Kings Tyrion had been undermining her
power base foiling her plots sending her
daughter to Dawn behind her back
threatening Joffrey and tommen and
countless other things and just before
the battle she had retaliated by taking
Alaya the sex worker she thought was
tyrion's mistress captive to keep Tyrion
from harming tommen Tyrion took this
very badly uttering a line that Cersei
will later remember vividly I have never
liked you Cersei but you were my own
sister so I never did you harm you've
ended that I will hurt you for this I
don't know how yet but give me time a
day will come when you think yourself
safe and happy and suddenly your joy
will turn to ashes in your mouth and
you'll know that the debt is
paid in tyrion's mind hiring sandon was
her moving to kill him before he could
go through with that threat Tyrion says
that he knows it was her in his gut she
is the first person he thinks to blame
and he never wavers from that view in
fact all this is actually rather unlike
Tyrion who is normally very Analytical
in his approach working through the
options he doesn't do that here he just
feels in his gut that it was her then
tries to find evidence to support that
it's a subtle insight into how although
Tyrion is very intellectual in his
approach to many things when it comes to
his family his emotions run High Cersei
definitely has motive and means to do it
and of course there's no question that
Cersei is capable of murder but there
are a couple of pretty strong arguments
against it the first of which Tyrion
himself has to acknowledge although
Cersei does have a lot of control over
the King's Guard and as queen regent
they would follow her orders sandan
Moore is an odd choice to give the task
to Marin Trant was loyal to her and
Boris Blount was when he was there and
Tyrion thinks Osmond kettleblack was too
but not mandon Moore he seemed to be
just loyal to the king second we have
the evidence that just after that point
in the battle Lancel Lannister reports
to Cersei that the battle was lost and
she responds by telling him to find
Tyrion and tell him not what you'd
expect her to say if she thought Tyrion
likely already dead and although we see
that from sansa's POV we do later of
course get 12 chapters of cersei's own
point of view it's not Beyond georgea
Martin to simply not have her think
about her attempt to murder Tyrion in
these chapters he famously kept a lot of
information back from us readers when we
had Ned's POV chapters in book one for
example but it is noticeable that she
never once thinks about this even when
you might think that she probably would
she has 10 chapters in The Feast for
crows and two more in Her Dance with
Dragons and in those chapters she spends
a lot of time worrying about Tyrion in
general putting a ransom on his head and
remembering the prophecy of the valon
car thinking Tyrion is trying to or
going to kill her if she had once tried
to kill him and failed wouldn't she
think about it then it seems likely so
although there isn't any evidence to say
that Cersei definitely wasn't involved
there also isn't much evidence to
suggest that she was tyrion's knee-jerk
accusation of her seems much more to do
with his feelings than with his
analytical mind so who else might it
have been step forward Joffrey Tyrion of
course has never really gotten along
with Joffrey nor vice versa while Cersei
Robert jimie and nly the entire court
enabled or turned a blind eye to
Joffrey's worst behaviors Tyrion was
nearly alone in standing up to him
Tyrion has slapped Joffrey twice both
times in front of others meaning the
stinged his pride must have hurt even
more the second time was after the riot
in King's Landing which saw Tyrion
blamed Joffrey for inciting the crowd
which he almost certainly was indeed
guilty of Tyrion called Joffrey stupid
and slapped him several times not just
once Joffrey was incensed and there are
other times where Tyrion made Joffrey
look stupid or small even in that very
Battle of the Blackwater where Tyrion
reaches up to snap Joffrey's visor shut
basically telling him off for keeping on
opening it so Joffrey had reason to
dislike his uncle and he also has form
in hiring someone to murder for him he's
the prime suspect in hiring the cator
Assassin to attack bran that was before
he was King but now he is King he
doesn't actually have to hire anyone
anymore he can just tell a member of the
King's Guard to do it he frequently used
the King's Guard to beat and humiliate
Sansa who he was betrothed to so is it
really a stretch of the imagination to
think he would tell man Moore to kill
his uncle Tyrion Mand Moore has shown
that he was loyal to Joffrey so it makes
sense that he would choose him and
sandon would obey without question like
his mother Joffrey thus has motive means
and proven willingness to murder through
others but also no actual evidence
against him we should probably note at
this point that the TV show heavily
hinted that it was Joffrey Tyrion and
Cersei basically have a conversation
about it all and she says it wasn't her
and the only other person with authority
to order the King's Guard to do
something like that was Joffrey so well
that obviously worked for the TV show
but it doesn't necessarily mean that
it's the case in the books so let's look
at our third candidate little finger
whether Peter Bish is capable of murder
is of course not a question at all he
quite clearly is just look at John Aaron
and his motivation to kill Tyrion is
also fairly straightforward little
finger framed Tyrion for the attack on
bran with that dagger and Tyrion
basically tells him to his face that he
knows Tyrion then also outmaneuvered him
in court politics when lying to him
about potential marriages for tommen and
Mella and perhaps most importantly of
all to little finger Tyrion was in line
to be marrying Sansa and by this point
Littlefinger had already developed an
unhealthy obsession with her yes at this
point Sansa was still engaged to Joffrey
but little finger was the one who would
just NE negotiated to bring the tyrells
into an alliance with the Lannisters
with margerie marrying Joffrey he was
clever enough to realize that tywin's
next play would be to marry Sansa to
Tyrion instead to forge A Lannister
claim to Winterfell simply put Tyrion
was an obstacle to littlefinger's goals
several of them Tyrion dying would
create that bit more chaos and
Littlefinger loved chaos there is
another angle here too sandon Moore's
rise to the King's Guard has always been
a bit of a history as we've noted he
came to King's Landing with John Aaron
but John didn't really like him and was
appointed to the King's Guard by Robert
Baratheon even though Robert didn't
really like him either it's hard to rise
that far in King's Landing without an
influential supporter so who was it
Littlefinger another Veil man is the
most obvious choice and if Littlefinger
was sandon's sponsor then it makes sense
that he could tell sandon to kill Tyrion
if he so wished incidentally I know some
have said that it couldn't be
Littlefinger because he was away from
King's Landing in the build up to this
moment but I don't think that's really
an issue here he managed to help
orchestrate Joffrey's murder and sansa's
escape a few months later while also
apparently being absent from King's
Landing he can be quite resourceful can
Littlefinger anyway if I had to guess at
this stage I would guess that it was
little finger who told sandon to kill
Tyrion sandon himself doesn't seem to
have much of a motive circumstantial
evidence seems to weigh against Cersei
and although it's the kind of thing
Joffrey would do surely even he wouldn't
order the death of the person in charge
of Defending King's Landing while King's
Landing was actually under attack little
finger however would ultimately Georg AR
Martin hasn't told us yet Perhaps all
will be revealed in a future book but
for now we will have to rely on educated
guesswork so who do you think ordered
tyrion's death
do you agree that little finger seems
most likely or do you have someone else
in mind let me know in the comments
