we're here to launch this wonderful
odudari the Lego topics for older people um 2023
my name is okay Wayne I'm from Big away
older persons legal service also known
as opals o-p-a-l-s
the first thing I want to do is that I
want to acknowledge that we are holding
this meeting on the traditional land of
the United people and I became my
deepest respect to elders past present
and emerging
I also like to acknowledge this Haley
hollerhead the Aboriginal artist whose
artwork is featured in this edition of
um open starry
as well as our Aboriginal and Tasha and
the brothers and sisters who are present
um
I just want to um
say that um I want to thank my attorney
general the um
um
Sean Sean Brad and Mary my CEO John Dr
John borset my manager
um Derek
Derek Shield who's also the acting CEO
of legal age
and as well as my colleagues in the
Community Education unit who have
assisted Us in producing these um open starring
starring
now before I introduce the speakers I
just want to speak a little bit about
open's work um
um
I've been the opal solicitor since um
August last year about 17 months
what I hear myself talking to people
saying to people is that elder law is difficult
difficult
as one reason for that is because very
often there's no one single simple legal
solution to the older person's problems
and the other reason
is that by the time a matter is referred
to opals
many aspects of the older person's life
are problematic
in particular the physical and mental
one observation I make while I was doing
almost I've been doing Opus work for
these last 17 months
is that the elder abuse in Multicultural
communities needs really urgent attention
attention
the elderly whether they are refugees
escaping from auton Europe after the
second World War
they arrived in Australia by boat after
the Vietnam War
or they are the only parents migrant
parents who recently arrived in
Australia to join their children in
Australia to build a better life
they have worked extremely hard to start
a new life here
and to see them suffering from elder
abuse is really heartbreaking
so if you see our reviews
come and talk to us at opals
we provide free
flexible specialist confidential legal
service to older cameras
we also provide long legal assistance
information and referrals to more
appropriate Services if we can't help we
ask other Support Services to to help
the the older person
and we also provide a Community
Education we go out to retirement
villages to community and talk to people
about issues of elder abuse
so without further Ado I'm going to
introduce my first Speaker Mr Shane
Rosenberry the member for courage on and
leader of act grants welcome [Applause]
[Applause]
thanks okay well good morning everybody um
um
hello this is not all country in
traditional language really pleased to
join you here today and to I want to
particularly welcome Haley who as Mrs
noted is the artist to do the couple
work on the diary now you'll see inside
there's a little explanation
and a piece is called Canberra through
my eyes it's very lucky to have a gentle
Haley who just told me this is actually
she explained to me the story and it's
really a beautiful representation of
Canberra I think with the Three Lakes
the river the mountains the people of
Canberra it's really lovely to see
Canberra representing his way so Haley
thank you for your artwork as part of
putting the diary together I want to
acknowledge my assembly colleagues who
are here today ministers Rebecca
vassarotti and Emma Davidson I see Peter
Keynes here as well so welcome and
welcome all of you to the ace activities
that assembly it's always nice to have
you over here and to be back in the
building this year we're allowed inside
those have been here the last couple of
years we'll recall we're still on the
steps outside in various weather
probably because of the pandemic it's
really nice you back inside and
celebrating this really important publication
publication
I think you all know legal aid does
incredibly important work in our
community in a whole range of areas
supporting some of the most vulnerable
people in Canberra and this is a great
case study of the sort of work that
legal aid does and the difference it
makes in our community
this is the third year I mentioned to
have been lucky enough to be the launch
of the Diary now and each year I am very
enthusiastic about it because
as the attorney I'm really conscious of
how confusing legal issues can be for
people when they don't understand it and
how disempowering it can feel if you
don't know
the thing that's been thrown at you you
feel like the weight of the state is
against you you feel like you feel
stressed about what it's going to cost
and all those sort of issues that people
feel when complex legal problems come
along and so I think this diary does two
really important things
first is it actually proactively tells
people about things
and give some information in a way
that's easily accessible and helps break
down the problems that is proactive
sort of getting on the front foot but
the second is it highlights the role
that legal aid and other Support
Services can play so that when people
are having those stressful moments
they've also got a better idea of who to
turn to and not feel alone in the
challenges they're facing which can be
legal there can also be much bigger but
often the legal stuff is what makes it
feel more pointy because that sense of
the law or the role it has so I just
want to
thank the team from legal aid once again
for producing his Diaries a terrific
piece of work I know it's very popular
in the older community in Canberra as a
government strives to
have an inclusive City and for all the
cameras particularly to feel valued this
just adds to that sense
I often quip to people I don't like the
way Australia deals with retirement
I don't think we value our older people
very well you know you basically work
all your life then suddenly there's this
random moment where you stop and retire
and I think we actually undervalue the
role of all the camp of all the people
generally in Australia and particularly
I think about that here in Canberra and
again this diary
addresses some of that by reminding
people of the places they can get
involved things they can do and so again
I really like that element so
I will not introduce too much longer I
think all the people here know this is
really valuable publication but I really
want to just thank the legal aid team
again for putting this together and
supporting our old camparians in
navigating their way through what is it
increasingly complex world so well done
veterans and seniors and also a member
for maravichi thank you welcome [Applause]
[Applause]
thank you it is an absolute joy to join
you here today for yet another beautiful diary
diary
um this is such a wonderful piece of work
work
um can I also just uh you know pay my
respects to Hayley and I also want to
pay my respects to our first Nations
Elders past and present and acknowledge
their nurturing of Future Leaders those
intergenerational connections are just
so important as well as connections to
to come into
I know there's a lot of people and a lot
of families in Canberra who have those connections
connections
um and so you know this is why it's so
important that we are able to gather
together and to share knowledge and
share ideas and show our respect for
each other
the artwork in this diary is not just on
the cover but it's actually throughout
the entire diary you'll notice it makes
the really beautiful book to to keep in
your handbag or on the kitchen table at
home to keep referring back to to have
something that is so beautiful I think really
really
shows how much we value the information
that we're sharing with older people and
and that we want this to be something
that they really treasure and make great
use of throughout the year there's
there's a lot of great information here
not just about your legal rights and and
where to get help if you need it but
also things like you know when are the
school holidays when's Grandparents Day
I particularly like to draw your
attention to the month of August now
August is one of my favorite months
because a lot of people in my family
have birthdays during that month and so
it's particularly important to have a
diary or a calendar around where I can
keep track of all their birthdays are
just so many of them but really
importantly this is the kind of
information you'll find in this book is
information about family Finance in your
home and some great tips on how to have
those conversations with your family
about how you're managing these things
and um you know what what your
responsibilities are what your rights
are and what what you can do there so
this is the kind of thing that you can
find throughout this book lots of really
good useful helpful information I hope
that everyone finds this useful I know
that there's always a lot more people
who want to get a copy of this than
there are available copies so make sure
that you tell all of your friends and
family and put the word out through your
networks that it's out again this year
and you need to grab your copy now and
thank you so much legal aid for
continuing to produce this really
important piece of work and continuing
to be there to support older people in
our community it's it's our community
sector organizations
um who do so much of that great work
um you know Coda act as well and um I
really value what you do and thank
[Applause]
now we were going to have uh Jenny
mobster to come and speak with us from
Coda and
um it looks like that she hasn't arrived
and but what I want to say is Coda
calcium with aging and also Jenny mobs
so they do a fantastic work with um
older communities here in Canberra and
legal aids have worked really closely
Opals to work really closely with Jenny and
and
uh there are a number of people in Cota
and assisting the older cameras now the
last thing before I close uh to say to
you is that we are going to work uh
quite um a lot with the Multicultural uh
Community here in Canberra attacking
older abuse and I was going to say that
uh Ching Wong our chair for the
Multicultural camera Multicultural Forum
a committee forum and I have started
doing a podcast on Elder Law and we
already did our first uh our first podcast
podcast
uh recorded that and it's going to be
published and we're going to do more in
that space and she is a problem member
in the Multicultural community and also
we're going to cover a range of issues
on our elder abuse and our podcast is
going to be um
exploring those those
so thank you so much for coming that
concludes today's launch now our diary
is now available online you can access
it from the legal aids um uh Opals
website the hard copies are still coming
they are being printed as the printers
and we will be delivering those to the
ACT public libraries kosher
Abacus local CME clubs a whole range of
places and the list of these spaces that
will be available on our website as well
so people can grab a hard copy as well
as some you know go and see it online so
thank you for coming have a great day [Applause]
