So, you've decided to undertake the
extra credit. Here's what you'll need to
be successful.
A metric ruler, preferably a meter stick,
graph paper,
plain paper,
a pen or pencil,
a shorter ruler,
and a calculator.
Your first step is to select a room to measure.
measure.
I would recommend your bedroom. Any
small room would be appropriate. You may
do more than one room, but remember that
to get at least a 10% increase in your
grade, you need to have at least 40
accurate measurements.
Begin by using your blank piece of paper
and sketch out a drawing of your room.
Make sure you include all the exterior
walls as well as the major furniture.
If you do not have at least 40
measurements, you may want to measure
the distances between furniture and
windows or doors
and any other details that you can add.
Or you may select an additional room to
do on a separate sheet.
The next step is to use your drawing and
enter in the actual measurements of each item.
item.
Make sure you measure the length of all
long walls and the length and width of
every piece of furniture.
Record this on your drawing. We will
then convert this drawing to an actual
scale drawing using the graph paper.
For objects less than a meter, note the
nearest centimeter point. For instance,
this table is 62 m in length.
For very short measurements less than 10
cm, make sure you remember to put a zero
before the number, such as this
10 cm would be written as.1 meter.
meter.
The next step is to determine the scale
that you will draw to convert your rough
illustration to an accurate
representation on graph paper.
Notice your two largest measurements,
the two longest walls in your room. In
my case, it is 4 75
You will use these measurements to
determine how big to draw each item on
the graph paper.
The two largest dimensions of the room
are 4.75 and 3.27.
I need to make sure that each of these
fits on the graph paper. My graph paper
is 20 cm
by 24 cm.
Therefore, I need to make sure that the
largest room measurement fits in the
smallest measurement on my graph paper.
To do this, take the graph paper measurement,
measurement,
divide it by
and round this number down. In this
case, the number would be four. What
this means is that every meter equals 4
is 4 cm
equals 1 meter.
The next step is to begin converting
your rough illustration over to an
accurate scale drawing on the graph paper.
paper.
Begin by taking your room's largest
dimension, 4.75 in my example,
times your scale. In our example, it's four
four
times 4.
And my answer is 19.
This means that the longest dimension on
my room will be 19 cm or 19 blocks.
and then use your ruler
Now that you've created your actual
scale drawing, make sure that the
original measurements
for each wall are written in the
appropriate place on your scale drawing. 4.75
4.75 m.
The next step is to measure the other
wall. In my example, 3.27 27 m and take
that measurement and multiply that times 4.
4. 3.27
3.27
* 4
There's 14. Here's 13. 13.08.
I'm going to go ahead and round that off
to the nearest 10th. So 13.08 would be 13.1.
13.1.
So 13 and just a tiny bit more.
Use my ruler to draw this line. Make
sure you use your ruler to draw
everything in your scale drawing
accurately to the right scaled size. And again,
again,
for that wall. The actual measurement
that you measured in the room.
So everything pictured on this illustration
illustration
is 4 cm for every meter.
Continue in this way drawing all your
external walls and then add in your
furniture. Again, to get additional
measurements, you may want to measure
the distance between pieces of
furniture, the distance between a piece
of furniture and a window or a door. All
Before turning in your final scale
drawing, you may want to go through the
checklist. If you do not follow
directions, you will receive no credit.
First of all, did you include your name
and period?
Do you have a minimum of 40
measurements? If you have less than 40,
Do you have actual measurements on your
scale drawing? And does each measurement
include the M label next to it? Any
measurements without M are going to be
marked wrong. The actual measurements go
on the scale drawing, not the scaled
size, but what you actually measured in
your room.
Is your drawing actually drawn to scale?
I should be able to take your scale, do
the math, and the measurement should be
a specific size as shown previously.
Did you label each item? The directions
say to label every item. For instance,
the door, the desk.
Is your scale given? 4 cm equals 1 meter
is an example of a scale.
This scale, by the way, is probably
appropriate for almost every bedroom. If
you use standard graph paper shown here
and measure a standard bedroom, 4 cm
equals 1 meter is a good scale to use.
Just make sure your scale allows you to
fit everything on the graph paper. If
you're still not sure if you met all the
requirements of the extra credit, just
bring it in and I'll take a look at it.
