Is a Ragdoll Cat right for you? You may be convinced by its beauty
or have heard that a ragdoll cat has a sweet personality.
I am the Cat Butler and I have had my two Ragdoll cats Teemo and Arya for over 2 and half years.
So before you run off getting a ragdoll,
I will share with you the pros and cons of owning a Ragdoll.
So you understand what you are getting yourself into.
Before we begin you may notice that Teemo and Arya have parts of their legs shaved.
They recently had a teeth cleaning and the vet shaved their legs to
make it easier to administer the anesthesia.
Teeemoo
Oh you are ready to home already huh
I will go over their experience in the next video.
Getting a ragdoll cat is like getting a best friend.
They want to do everything with you.
Whether it is doing the laundry, going to the bathroom, or even when I water my plants.
Arya, what are you looking for?
Teemo and Arya want to spend every moment with me.
On the days I leave for work, my cats wait at the window.
How nice of you Teemo and Arya to welcome me home.
Were you waiting long? Like a fluffy cloud watching your every move,
ragdoll cats will follow you around the house and demand a cuddle session when they feel lonely.
Teemo likes to let me know when it’s time to give him a hug.
Because of their long hair, ragdoll cats have a tendency to get poop stuck on their
fur compared to short hair cats. The long hair just gets too long
and the poop just lands on their fur. If you are not able to clean the poop early on you
can walk home to poop stains all over the house. And then have to bathe your cat without
getting scratched to death. Don’t worry there are some preventative
steps you can take to reduce the chance of having poop stuck on your cat’s fur.
You can give your ragdoll cat a sanitary haircut every month.
A sanitary haircut shaves away the fur around your cat’s anus.
Shaving the fur helps them stay cleaner and reduces the chance
poop will get stuck on their fur. Using a pet clipper is the fastest and
safest at getting the job done. Pet clippers are designed to work
longer without overheating and have specific blades designed for pet hair.
Whenever possible, it’s always preferable to use pet clippers over human clippers.
Teemo do you like your butt trim? I guess not.
Another way to reduce poop on their fur is by getting a bigger litter box.
I noticed with other cats that sometimes when they are trying to turn around in a
smaller litter box, leftover poop may rub against the walls of the litter box
and as a result get stuck in their fur. A bigger litter box would prevent this.
Most cats do not like being held, but for ragdolls it's a genetic trait
that they simply go limp when they are cradled in your loving arms.
Known as floppy cats they don’t mind being carried around or held like you would an actual ragdoll.
This is one of the reasons why I got Teemo and Arya.
The thought of holding these two fluffballs was a big positive.
On average Teemo and Arya could be held up to 2 minutes comfortably in my arms.
Other ragdoll cats could be longer. Their mother Olivia can be held forever.
Isn’t she beautiful?
As a long hair cat breed, expect a decent amount of shedding from a ragdoll cat compared to a short-hair cat breed.
Teemo and Arya leave me many presents throughout the day.
Some hair on the sofa, my plants, my clothes, and even hair floating in the air.
Expect to vacuum and clean your home quite often to keep the hair down.
I have found an air purifier very helpful in catching hair or dust floating in the air
and also great at eliminating allergens.
You will be surprised that I was actually allergic to my cats.
Prior to getting them I never had an allergic reaction to cats.
So it was a shock 1 month after getting Teemo and Arya I could barely breathe due
to all the pet dander floating in the air. Allergies can develop at any time and it’s
not always clear why some people develop allergies later in life when they didn't have them before.
Luckily an air purifier was the solution that I needed to eliminate my pet allergy.
Our sponsor Cuckoo offers a H13 True HEPA air purifier that has a 5 stage filtration
that keeps the air in your home clean. There is a pre filter, allergen filter,
H13 True HEPA air filter, activated carbon filter, and UV-C light.
Working together these filters eliminate 99.97% of harmful airborne
particles as small as 0.1 microns in size. I tested the air purifier for over 2 months in
the living room and it did a good job at keeping my allergies in check while reducing the amount
of dust I found when I cleaned the room. It is ideal for medium to large rooms.
So if you have allergies or like to reduce the amount of dust in the air,
Cuckoo offers a solution. You can find the link to

And if you want to learn more about how an air purifier works I will link
the video in the description below. Ragdoll cats have a friendly personality
and make great pets for families with children and other pets.
This gentle and easy going nature comes genetically as
Ragdolls were bred to be docile companions. As a result they are not prone to aggression and
very tolerant with people and other animals. This is a breed that bonds with its new family
members and forms a long-lasting relationship with them very quickly.
Of course, every cat is an individual, and some may do better than others.
In my experience Teemo and Arya have been great with guests, dogs, and even the vet.
If you are respectful with them they will never aggressively attack or bite you.
Teemo just wants to be friends with everyone. Is that right Teemo?
Some people may not like a chatty cat. Ragdoll cats can be quite vocal and
talkative without being annoying. This is what it sounds like.
Your ragdoll cats are vocal because they want to communicate with you.
They are trying to tell you something. Here are the following reasons:
they are hungry, want attention, are in a playful mood, scared, or are in pain.
So take time to listen closely. Teemo and Arya are pretty vocal kitties.
They were like this when they were kittens.
Whenever I am not in the same room, Arya will start meowing to let me know I forgot about her.
She always wants to be by my side at all times. She even meows when I spend too much
alone time with Teemo. I think she is jealous.
On the other hand Teemo likes to talk with me frequently throughout the day.
Whether he wants to be held,
get some pets,
let me know it's meal time, or when he wants to go outside.
So be prepared for some kitty talk in the house. If you are looking for a lap cat,
a ragdoll cat is meant for you. Their obedient and loving nature means they are an
ideal lap-cat and a perfect companion for owners. Arya just loves to sit on my lap.
Sometimes she falls asleep and purrs in her sleep.
Unfortunately Ragdoll Cats are prone to obesity. Teemo can be such a couch potato.
They aren’t the most active breed and eat quite a bit due to their large size.
Obese cats are at risk of developing life threatening diseases
such as diabetes and heart disease. So how do you prevent obesity?
You can manage their weight by feeding them a healthy diet with the right portions.
One that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
A high quality wet food or raw meat diet will work.
You can also give your cat more exercise by playing with your cat.
I have found those tips to work for Teemo and Arya.
They are both a decent weight. Ragdoll cats are quite intelligent.
They are intuitive when it comes to showing affection,
companionship, and articulating their needs. Teemo and Arya seem to know when I am having a
bad day, and come over to give me a hug. This usually entails hugging my leg.
They also can be trained to play fetch,
chase a train
or even ring a bell. Out of my two cats,
Arya is the more intelligent one. She picks up everything so quickly.
I wonder if I can teach her how to play soccer?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM is the most common cardiac disease in cats.
Affected cats are at risk of sudden cardiac death due to defects in the heart.
The heart walls thicken, thereby decreasing the heart’s efficiency and causing symptoms
in other parts of the body. In Ragdoll cats the condition is
inherited due to breed specific mutations. The HCM mutation increases the likelihood of
a cat having hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. To reduce the chances of having HCM, reputable
breeders test for the HCM mutation and remove cats positive with HCM from the breeding pool.
So make sure you get your ragdoll kitten from a reputable breeder.
Ragdolls are one of the most affectionate cat breeds.
They love to cuddle and be close to their humans.
For some people they may not like this clingy behavior.
They may not want a cat that sits on their lap or a cat to greet them when they come home,
but may prefer a cat that is more independent. So if you are the latter, a Ragdoll cat
may not be what you are looking for. Did any of the pros or cons change your decision?
Overall owning a ragdoll has been one of the best decisions in my life.
I now have two best friends that are always there for me.
I have never been happier. So consider getting a ragdoll cat.
