Good everybody. Welcome to the show.
Lovely to have you with us. Very special
weekend everybody. Coming up is the
front bar here for How Good. It is a
very, very special weekend. The 10th
anniversary of Doug Nichols round. We
can't wait. Two of the greats are going
to join us behind the bar tonight. Dale
and Derek Kick
this as we celebrate a really special
round of footy and a man who is
profoundly responsible for the footy
club that Jalong has become. Cameron
Ling also
join fantastic. It's well it's
fantastic. Why I just I just say uh I
can't think of a better way to celebrate
Sir Doug Nichols round than having Dale
kick it, Derek kick it. Yep. And Cameron
Ling.
I think that's No, I I think we've
nailed it here at the front bar. The
best way to pay homage to the indigenous
contribution is to have a white guy with
freckles and red hair on the program.
So, well done to our our producers.
Nailed it. Really nailed it. Nailed it.
And it is the Doug Nichols round. We're
looking forward to it over the next
Fortnite enormously. What a round last
week. I mean, extraordinary since 1970
thanks to Swamp. uh the the tightest
round of uh average margins that the
game seen since 1970. It was super super
tight. Amazing stuff, of course. And uh
finished, of course, with North
Melbourne having a draw. Having a draw.
Well, that didn't come as a surprise to
me. I mean, did North Melbourne have a
very very talented list and it was only
a matter of time before they almost won
a
game. That that was not a massive, you
know, it was a big weekend for What
about the Tigers?
Tigers. The preseason expectations
weren't great, but you get your third
win on the board. So, third win on the
board for the Tigers. Guys, settle down,
though. We're just We're trying to keep
a lid on it. We're We don't want to get
ahead of ourselves. You are trying to
keep a lid on it. I It's hard to say
you're keeping a lid on it when if you
have a look at these scenes from Swan
Street after the game. Like, they they
are not Mickey, you're not keeping a lid
on it.
The idea is it's up there with all our
premiership wins when you come over the
top of West Coast and you get them like
that juggernaut. They are punchy. Well,
they're unstoppable. Particularly when
some of you young BS are doing the
things that Tom Brown did late in this
game. I mean, this was remarkable. This
is the tackle heard round the world.
This is the tackle that stops a nation.
Bang. Show me a single person who didn't
love this tackle. Not who's this
egghhead. That was Tom Gross. Oh, he got
caught. Everyone would have loved it.
Not one person Oh, hang
on. Didn't love that tackle. The tackle
that stops the nation. People will be
asking themselves, "Where were you when
Tom Brown laid that tackle?" Where were
you? When was it? Sunday. I tell you
what I wasn't doing. Celebrating
Mother's
Day. Oh,
more trouble. Glad I asked. Mate, mate,
she's a lovely woman. She owes me a lot
of money.
Hey, you got to draw a line, sir.
Absolutely. You can't just keep handing
out all the time your way. It was a big
tackle. No, it was a great It was a
great tackle. Why don't we have a Why
don't we have a tackle of the year? We
have a mark of the year. We have a goal
of the year. Why don't we have a tackle
of the year? And at the end of the year,
we go, that's the best tackle. Oh, I
think that's a worthy worthy um
suggestion. Yeah. Why can't you You're a
man of I reckon it was a sling tackle,
but I don't want to I don't want to run
on your again. They said the chase down
tackle from behind was dead and proof
that it is not dead. So I haven't seen a
rundown like that since that lawyer
tried to issue you with a
subpoena. What he's trying to get you
that was we get through sorry winless
eagle. The Eagles. Yeah, of course get
through round nine. They over again the
poor eagles. So they are winless but the
players still have plenty to celebrate
in particular Tom Cole their defender
with this unbelievable spoil. Look at
this. And I'm saying look why wouldn't
you celebrate? Do you know what I mean?
Have a look at it. It's the He's not
done yet either, by the way. Yes. Come
on.
That's the That's the spoil that stopped
the
nation. There was a spoiler heard around
the world. There's going to be a reunion
for that spoil someday cuz it's the
greatest thing that's happened at West
Coast. The whole team's getting tattoos.
Spoil tattoos. Spoil tattoos. You got to
celebrate the little things. Hey, I'm
pouring's been in the uh the uh in the
crosshairs the last couple of couple of
weeks I should say of course and
particularly after the cosy picket
decision. I mean, this was extraordinary
that this was kind of mixed and it just
shone the light on it, didn't it? It
created awesome conversation. I don't
know. Jury's out. Is that It's I don't
know. Is that to touchwood? Should have
got a week for kicking his hand.
The the How do you miss that, mate? The
AFL's had a fair bit on his plate the
last couple of weeks, but has been
relatively quiet on the picket incident.
Uh well, until this evening, this is I'm
real. They have actually released a
statement from the AFL. Uh, yep. [ __ ]
decision. What? That's fact. That's what
it says. [ __ ] decision. AFL.
There are I I do I don't say this often,
but I feel for the umpires who are under
a bit of pressure. They are right now.
And if you want to know exactly how much
pressure, check this umpire out from the
Julon GWS game.
Leave outside five. Move outside five.
You tell me that's not that's not a
bloke on the edge. That's not a bloke
about to crack. He's definitely feeling
the pinch. Yeah. But it's not just it's
not just umpires who who feel the
pressure that this game brings. No. If
if on a football show in 2025 we are
talking about the greatest voice breaks
of all time. Um we are that umpire was
was great. But I tell you what, back in
1969, commentator Jack Edwards had one
for the ages. Yes, he did. Trying to get
a score for his team calling. Oh, it's a
beautiful kick. It's a beauty there.
How good. How good.
That was magnificent, Sam. That was the
voice break that stopped the nation. Can
I just say that was Len Thompson. What a
thing for the for the young kids in the
crowd. That's called That was what we
used to call a dropkick. That was a drop
kick Thompson. That was absolutely
superb. One of the other big talking
points that's given us day upon day upon
day of Fer has been this one. Jordan
Clark's hit on Locky Schultz. Of course,
he went into that spasm reaction. He was
clearly uh unconscious or knocked out uh
via the contact of course and all sorts
of conversation about why the game
wasn't. It hasn't been covered enough
for Mike. No. No. When one of those
football shows going to talk about I
reckon there's another 24 hours in this
hand. But but it has been there's been
all sorts of back and forth between
Collingwood statements memos
everything's flying to try and get to
the bottom of that incident. Yum. I
think I'm with you Mickey. It's been
tough time for the umpires. I think
we're being a bit too hard on them in
this occasion too cuz injured players
can recover at different speeds. Example
round three 985. Carlton's Bruce Reed
here. He's hurt in this contest bottom
of the screen. He's going back and he
you can see he's clearly hit right. You
can see he's on the ground. And there he
is there. Season over. Stretcher will be
out in a minute. He's not coming back
from that. Yeah. Don't overdo it. The
thing
But you're right, M. It doesn't look
good, does it? Didn't look good at all,
sir. And uh bring out the screens. I
think so, too.
Honestly, looks like he's in trouble.
And he's in you see him in the hands of
the trainers, right? And look, moments
later, let's have a look how it played
out. Bruce Reed's in the hand of the
trainers. cuz I don't think he'll be
continuing Jack behind the play. He
looks sick. North Melbourne leading
carton by three points. It's kicked
toward Reed and there he is again. He's
come out of the hands of his trainers
and said you very
much see back. You can go too early. You
can't call it too early. You can't trust
those players. That's the resurrection.
The trainer was giving a shepherd at one
stake. It was unbelievable. Good point.
I know a lot of other footy shows around
the place have dropped off the Tazzy
story, but we're all over it here. We
will not take our focus off what's going
on down there. It's crunch time. As it's
about to go through parliament. If they
don't get through the upper house,
they're cooked. This is This is It's
about You always say this. They don't
get a stadium. They're in real trouble.
Well, they It's Well, in the eyes of
many, it won't happen without the new
stadium building. There's going to be
all sorts of legislation rewritten down
there just to let the thing The problem
is there's a very vocal minority of of
local. I don't know if it's minority or
not, but there's a a vocal amount of
locals down there who do not want it.
And we first heard them come out in full
voice back in 2023 when they protested
with this catchy tune.
Your
stadium stadium up your bum.
It's powerful in song. One of the great
protest songs ever written. How many
roads must a man walk down and you can
stick it up your bum.
stick a stadium up your bum. Well, as
with the music industry, we know and
protest, it has to evolve and keep
moving. So, that uh vocal group have
come out with the same song. Uh but it's
an extended mix now with musical support
and extended lyrics.
Shake your stadium. Shake your stadium.
Shake your stadium all the way up
your messy receipt.
See what they're doing now?
That's even angrier. That's angry. Now
the stadium's getting a prostate check.
I don't know. I don't know where this
all ends. It only did. What happened to
the female vocalist that was part of the
original crew? Who? Yoko.
She's gone. She's gone.
Don't go anywhere. We're here for Han.
How good on the other side of this Doug
Nichols round starts this weekend. Derek
and Dale kicking to join us on the other
side.
We
fight for the naughty door for you too
much. We We tore that joint apart one
night uh with our state-ofthe-art
comedy. We looked a bit overdressed. We
We sang You can stick your stadium up
your bum for two
hours and the Han flows freely there. Of
course, getting involved with the
program via our social media platforms.
Cameron Ling not too far away from
joining us of course and part of the
commentary team now. Cameron Ling part
of the commentary fraternity and again
you keep a very very keen eye. Keen eye
you do and um you know those signs on
the boundary line we always see that
they hold them up and there's a cryptic
meaning. No one's really sure. GWS and
Jalong on the weekend they had one there
and um well first Joel Cwood he had a go
at it and then Nick Rewalt had a go at
it too and could not scramble it. I
don't think they could. Would you have a
look? Joel, you're probably one to
answer what that might have been. No, no
idea what that means. No idea. Anything
for us, Ruie? Well, I don't know. Maybe
some sort of killer mode. I don't know.
Kill the game.
Wow. Channel 7's still happy with their
decision to grab Nick from Fox, do you
reckon? I'm sure he's on the show in a
couple of weeks. You can ask him. I will
ask him. Kill a whale. That's a It's an
It's an Orca. Yeah. So, I've got no idea
what it means. Okay. But, um, uh, and
neither did, by the way, neither did
Joel. We need one of them right now. I
see going to kill a whale. Listen, I've
got I was I did have a point. I did have
a point. What's your point? There was an
image on the There was another image on
the weekend down on the boundary line
that, you know, not as cryptic. Not as
cryptic. And Cameron Ling, our guest
coming up, he was uh he was all over it.
I know what that one means.
BT that means 2 minutes to go.
No, thank you. Absolutely.
One of the best. One of the best in the
business. Well, if you've done year 10
in Jalong, you've you know number two.
So, hey, it's a very special time of the
season, of course, for the for the 10th
time. Seduct is upon us over the next uh
Fortnite. We've got so much to
celebrate. It's always an honor to
welcome those who have given us so much
joy to the show at this time of the
year. And please do that with us
tonight. Derek, kick it, everybody.
Derry, it's it's it's great to have you
back for what I think is it five your
fifth appearance. I think that's as as
many as we've had. We love checking in
with you on this round. You brought a
guest with you uh today. Who have you
got there? Dale spotted me.
I did. I I couldn't find Nikki, so I
don't know where he's going. But who
have you got? I got nephew Dale.
I've been on five times. Who's got Who's
got the most? Lee Matthews has got six.
I need to come back on. Oh, you'll be
Come back next week if you want. Hey
Dale, thanks for coming on the show. We
really appreciate it. Thanks for having
us. It's a joy. There's a lot to talk to
you about through it. An amazing career.
What we want to do is roll because we've
shown plenty of Derek's highlights when
he's We'll get to some more later. So,
we're going to show the highlights of
Dale Kick It. Now, Dale, I think you're
a pretty humble champion, so you're not
going to mention stuff about yourself.
Derek, when you watch the highlights of
Dale, tell us about the footballer that
you see.
I see a
young another young original boy coming
from a small country town called Tannon.
Yep. Which is where I come from. So, and
to see somebody else coming after me was
great to see. And, you know, I hope that
I inspired him when I was playing footy.
Um, you know, he's gone on to play at
Clmont as well where I played footy at
Clemont. So, it's good. you know, he's
played a few AFL games and I think what
stands out for me about Dale is that he
puts in the hard work and he's been to a
few clubs, but the last club he played
for was Freemale Dockers and he's one of
best in Ferris after being from other
clubs, you know, so to and that's
dedication for hard work. Derek, what
you know I love about that tribute was a
lot of nice words about Dale, but also
you managed to slip yourself in a couple
of times.
It's
always a
I couldn't give too much about Dale
because he's he's not a left footer.
Yeah, I know. You're a bit biased. This
is your last game, Dale. If I think I'm
right in saying you'd been injured
earlier in the year and they gave you at
the tribute game against Port Adelaide
and I reckon it's a mark of respect when
the opposition team get around and
farewell an opponent. Did that that must
have meant a lot to you that night? Oh,
definitely. Um, uh, Port were, uh, I
think they made, they made the grand
final that year. Anyway, they, um,
uh, it was good to get that last game
from, um, uh, I think Chris was coaching
us at the time, Connelly. Um, uh,
firstly, and then, uh, for those B to
all get around and for a lot of, uh, uh,
my family in Perth, because there's a
lot of them as well. [ __ ] los.
Um, sorry about that. Um yeah, so for
for all those people to hang around,
particularly the Port Adelaide um boys,
uh it was great. So we we're looking at
the highlights there and the thing that
stood out is you played for five
different clubs over the journey. There
you are in your five different jerseys.
Did you did you ever during a game
forget who you were playing
for just handball at the opposition and
go, "Oh, I don't play with them
anymore." Yeah, there were five AFL
clubs. There was about 20 other
clubs. Didn't end there. Who Dale, who
had who had the best theme song out of
the five?
Oh, definitely. Definitely wasn't the
Dockers.
I think we can all agree agree on that,
Derek. Yeah. My favorite song was the
the club that I didn't play for was was
uh Richmond's cuz
you know what, Dale? If you'd only tried
harder, you could have got six.
Well, only there's only three BS who
have played for five clubs in the
history of the game. So, it's quite
something. When Plugger was on in your
time at Sincer, when Plugger was on the
lead, there was a piece of the
highlights there. Did you feel under any
extra pressure to make sure that you hit
him lace out? Uh, kicking towards him
was much easier than uh wondering where
he was if you were, you know, in front
of him. Yeah, I bet cuz I see him I've
seen him nearly
killed even his own players.
It's better to have him on your side.
Uh, tell us about your first early
memories. You say you come from the same
little town and growing up and this
bloke standing beside you must have been
a mentor. What are your first memories
of watching Derek go about the business?
Um, yeah. Well, Derek was from a long
line of uh uh our family that, you know,
played footy for Tam. And um um I
suppose uh if we weren't to be um uh but
you know we were going to be
footballers. Yeah. Yes. And and uh wheat
farmers and cheerers and [ __ ] like that.
So
So I had to be I had to be a uh I had to
be a footballer cuz um um Sherim was
bloody hardworking.
But what do you remember of him? What do
you remember of him? Was it what was it
about his game that you loved going to
watch down? Oh, yeah. Um, well, Tamman
Footy Oil is one of the biggest ones in
the in in the AAN League. Um, and uh,
probably torpedoes. Oh, yes. Well, funny
you mention that. Well, I love the
torpedo. I just wish there was a way to
get it back into the game. And we've
managed to cobble cobble together,
Derek, some of your favorite. Uh, that
one. Uh, boom shaka lacker. This is as
good as it gets. Uh, this one turned up
on
radar. Look at that. That was one of the
best. This one here, off two steps.
That caused a diplomatic incident.
Here we go. Uh, this one here burned up
on re-entry. That is as good as on the
run. And you a bork to do it. This is
just insane, mate. Well, with with the
last name kick it. Yeah. You know, we
had to play footy. What about this one?
I couldn't play net ball or on the on
the run. On the run and a ball. That's
Did you have a Did you have a favorite?
You know, did what was it? One step,
three steps on the run. Just a one or
two step. Yeah, that was the one. Dale,
could you kick the top the way Derek
could? Look at this. Um, no. But I I did
win a comp in we used to play at a
original carnival in Jerton at the end
of the year one. And um uh I think that
was the only time I might have beaten in
the tor. We we Yeah, I won the torp
comp. D, why would you why would you
bother with torps? Because because
there's torps that's fine, but mate,
high marks is is another another thing
that's getting lost in the game. And
before we show some vision, I just want
to show you a couple of your um uh a
couple of photos of you going up here.
That's that's it's incredible. Yeah. Do
you remember that? Who you playing for
there, mate? Clen, that's uh Nisham
number 11 there. Stand on his head.
You can take that one. Do you remember?
That was Captain Coach, probably. Can't
remember. Are you standing on your
captain coach? That was a good thing.
Look at this one here, mate. Look at
that. Beautiful. Is that Clmont again?
Uh yeah, it's Clmont Swans. um Tony
Evans and Greg Walker, but those black
shiny little fellas, so
so it wasn't really a still it's a you
know it's it's an amazing you know um by
the way it's no there's no cameras there
to capture uh the vision so we have to
take your word for it that you
mate when you bring them in like you
brought your talks in we'll play
them the um I'm going to say though we
saw some still photos of Dale No moving
no moving to which is a shame, but even
even having cameras at the ground uh
doesn't doesn't necessarily guarantee
that we're going to see the see the
mark. And here you go. This is for you,
Derek. This is the greatest mark you
ever took. Please enjoy it. I'm courtesy
of Channel 7's director.
Oh, this is wonderful.
I was I was standing on his shoulders.
Well,
how good was it? It was good. I was
stand on his shoulders. Well, that was
I'm sure it was great, but we did get a
a chance to see it. Gary, I did a I did
a I did a somersault in the air while
calm down, Derek. Here's a few of your
best ones. We love these. Talk us
through them. Uh, this is a one for the
ages.
An absolute ripper.
One of the Oh, Dale, how you didn't hurt
yourself when you landed in is beyond.
This is a beautiful mark here, D too.
There it is. Everything you need in the
one mark. And this is my favorite. And
I'll There he is. Why is that? Was that
over Lingy? Yeah. No, it wasn't over
Lingy. But why is that your favorite?
It's my favorite because you were
playing in the back pocket at the time.
So, have a look again. It is Julong.
They they put the ball in you. Now,
you're supposed to go the punch here and
No,
that is just outrageous, babe. What did
she say when he lucky he said lucky you
took that mark?
Now, there's there's some dispute about
you definitely played a game a game of
footy together 1994. We played the
Allstars game up in Darwin against
Collingwood. Do you remember much about
this game? What are your memories of
this afternoon up in the top end?
Um,
well the the number of people that come
from all over Australia to see it, you
know, there were a lot of our relatives
there as well. Um because it was a game
that probably
um we you know we we never we didn't
know that we we we would do it again.
Yep. Um you know 10 years later or 20
years later or the one just recently.
Yeah. So um uh yeah it was it was a bit
bit of an honor to play with some of the
BS that I played with there.
Unfortunately um uh Nick and uh and
Longie missed that game through injury
and and whatever else. Yeah. It's always
a pleasure to see the Allstar team go
around together. It's a rare treat. But
um strangely that's not my strongest
memory of that game. There's one that
stands out above it and it's the goal
umpire. See if you can pick it. And
hello girls. Dinner's on. Look at that.
In his defense, he just come straight
from October Fest.
October Fest.
I see a man who's helping police with
their inquiry.
That is one hell of a thing. A get up. I
know you're always excited. Well, you
know, I I I I am always excited to see,
you know, I love you. I've always You're
my favorite player even though I worked
for Carlton. I'll give you 100 bucks
later. Yeah, you were my favorite
player. I first time I met you, I told
that. And I wanted to say to everyone
loves you your appreciates your football
career. I just want to say this with a
complete he history of uh staunch
heterosexuality. You are a handsome
man. And by the way, in your prime in
your prime, have a you are just
stunning, mate. Have a look at you. You
are
just the hair,
mate. You look you're just you're magn
The hair is unbelievable. And and
holding on only the gray spot here. I I
hear what you're saying, Sam. Derrick's
got the got everyone covered. I think
Dale's got Derek covered. Hello, Dale.
Look at that.
What kind of mullet is that? Hey, that's
that's that's party at the front and
party at the back. That one. That That's
a mullet freakoff.
That That is
massive. Was it a sad day when you had
to get rid of the mullet, D? Uh yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A special round, of
course, the Doug Nichols round. Um, we
get the chance to say thank you to all
the indigenous players who have given us
so much and there's so much great
storytelling associated with the round
nowadays and we're all better for it.
The jumpers are a representation of
that. And I know you've got I think you
might have the Sydney one with you,
Derek, but Darl, have you got the
Freemantle jumper there? And do you have
any sort of basic idea what the what the
story of this year's jumper might be?
Hold up and just show us. Yeah, this one
is uh by Jeff Farmer and uh the wizard.
There is only one wizard. um uh and his
and his father. Um and you know the
story is uh well he originally played um
in the uh the original colors um you
know the um chevrons uh the uh green,
white and red. Um there's a story about
the Chitty Chitties. Um uh I'm not too
sure about that, but and and it's got
the um the um notified biscuits on here,
which is uh uh originally from the um uh
Kimbley's um uh that you know represents
um sorry day for uh us as a as a mob.
And he he also put you know um the most
uh originalinal blacks that was in the
free metal team in um uh which is seven
and the traditional bank west
I
still don't know whether you know the
full story of the Swanies jumper but but
you've got another family member who's
performing over Sir Doug Nichols around
somewhere aren't you don't you? Yeah,
this is um done by an artist uh from the
La Peruse La Peruse community in New
South Wales uh Jordan Adler. So it's a I
think it's a story about the Sydney
Swans headquarters. So great work there.
Thanks for bringing it in in my
size. So appreciate that. Yeah. So it's
um you know to celebrate Nadok
indigenous round with with our mob. It's
it's great you know and our players look
forward to that. They look look forward
to representing our community, our mob.
Um but even our you know our community
people all around the community love to
come and watch these indigenous round
games and yeah my grandson um plays he's
not a footballer but he's uh he's a
singer. So he's he's um singing at the
half the game of Western Bulldogs and
the Essen game on Saturday night and his
name is Sadric Kickot and he's 19 years
of age and he's just bringing out his
deboo single. So, it's called uh Shock
Waves. And so, you know, everybody
there.
Hey, um and talking about talking about
grandsons, I've got three grandsons that
are playing in the AFL at the moment,
which is Liam Henry for St. Kilder. Yes.
Uh Cosie Pigot and
uh Quinton Knuckle. So, there you go.
Amazing legacy.
your um the combined contribution from
you two uh speaks for itself. We love
this weekend here on this show. Um and
we thank you for everything you've done
for our great game.
Um yeah, before we go uh um the you know
from where we come from um uh I like to
acknowledge you know our our whole
community and in our footy club there
and and you know uh where my um fathers
and uncles and grandfathers and and and
nephews and and they still play footy.
Um I brought in um um a jumper of teen's
now amalgamated with Keller Baron and
Derek played in the premiership there in
98 and I played in one in 2004 when I
when I retired and uh and I I got a
little bit of pressure from the boys and
I thought I had to bring it in to show
it. Perfect.
That
is that'll mean that'll mean the world
to them and at least you went and got
your premiership after all this the
really serious stuff was done, mate. So
well done you. I'll see you at the
doodly
tablet. Everybody don't go
anywhere. Welcome back to the
show. How good are our next guest
tonight? a three-time premiership
player, premiership captain, uh all
Australian, best and fairest winner at
his footy club, but more than all of
that, heart and soul and help build the
foundation of what's become one of the
great football clubs in the competition.
Please make him welcome Cameron Ling.
Thank you, Andy. That's very kind of
you, Ly. You're a humble. You've always
been a humble and modest man and you'd
never ever um say that about yourself,
but it takes people like you who are
selfless and put team first, which you
did throughout your entire career to
help build the sort of team that
Jalong's become. So, no, that that means
a lot to me. It's great to hear it.
Hopefully, my kids have stayed up late
to watch it and listen to it. Thanks so
much for having me. No, it's a joy to
have a bit of early for a eulogy, isn't
it? He's just our guest. He's actually
did have a bit of
contribution. It didn't mean to come
out. Here we go. So, the highlights
speak for themselves. I want to ask you,
you're born in Jalong, be grew up a
Jalong supporter, went to those painful
Jalong grand finals before you started
playing as a fan. Then you get to play
for your footy club and you do what you
did in 2007 and beyond, which we'll get
to. When you reflect on this, is it
dream is it actually dream come true
stuff? Yeah, it genuinely is, Andy. Um,
I was, as you mentioned, crazy cats fan.
I went to that ground so many times. Oh,
I actually got off the ground there.
That's great. Um, and all I all I ever
dreamed of really honestly uh was seeing
the Cats win a premiership. I never for
one truly one second truly thought that
I would be out there on that day. Um, so
to see this this vision and to reminisce
a little bit. Uh, it it is an amazing
feeling. I enjoyed that moment
especially. I bet you did. That was the
last one. I did carry on like an idiot
after it, but uh yeah, that was
beautiful. A great time. Yeah, I bet it
was. Yeah. Well, listen, we're here. You
got off the ground. You did get off the
ground for one. It was um I'm a little I
find it a little uncomfortable seeing
those highlights after having just
watched Dale and Derek's highlight. Um I
appreciate you making me follow them.
Lingy, mate, that's that's very humble
of you to say, but and and and spot on,
by the way.
I just You know what? Thanks for
mentioning it. You know, for those
viewers at home, just who may have uh
drifted off during Lingies. No, you may
have just lost a bit of interest during
Lingy's highlights. Um, let's go. Let's
play some more Derek and D.Y.
Oh, wow. Okay. That was similar to my
mom.
What's he doing? I used to get around
players like that.
Um, could you have t could you have
tagged either of those blades? Yeah. No,
cuz they would have sat on my head and
taken hangers. Um, there wasn't many
people at that crowd at that last. All
right, now you're just getting bit.
So, part of your ascent to the Jalong
team was through the mighty Jalong
Falcons, which been such a rich
recruiting ground for the Jalong Footy
Club. There you are, full forward leader
of that team under 18. It was in the TAC
in the um TAC cup. You were full
forward. The bloke who was your center
half forward is in the next row, three
from the right. Yes, the great Jonathan
Brown. Um I got to play with him. He was
incredible. What a player. He he
completely dominated uh in that under 18
year. We we made a grand final together
as 17 year olds. Uh we lost it
unfortunately and then the following
year we made the finals and Brownie just
completely took over the comp. He was
phenomenal. So you were he was a center
forward and you were a full ford. Yeah,
I was a bit of a decoy Sam. No, no, he
keep you know I asked I asked Brownie
about what you know about memories of
playing with you in the under8s and his
greatest memory is that your mother had
the best toasted
sandwiches that that's that's true. What
was the secret to to Mrs. Ling's toasted
sandwich? Uh probably the fact that was
occurring at about 2:00 in the morning
right would often stay at our house and
we'd try and hush him like just just be
quiet. Let's just get to bed. Let's not
wake up mom and dad. And he would carry
on and mom would come down and cook him
up pretty much an entire loaf of toasted
sandwiches and he'd be chatting away. Uh
he loved staying at our place for that
reason only. I might need to see some ID
though and with the under 18s team. Look
at
the the bloke next to you is clearly
fudging it
and a bloke on there who could have
spent 8 to 10 years in the
pen. This is
Stickers for the rules down there. Under
18s are under 58.
That's unbelievable. One of those is
former Bulldogs player Brian Cy. He was
our coach. Oh, there you go. Yeah, great
guy. So, full forward at the elite
junior level, nextep AFL. And you become
one of the game's most feared and
revered taggers. How did that transition
come about? Uh, well, I got to play
under the the great Mark Thompson, the
brilliant coach. And he um said to me
after about my first season, he said,
"You need a few more strings to your
bow. You need to um be able to play
maybe up through the middle of the
ground." I was never quite going to be
tall enough to be a key position
forward. Maybe not going to be quick
enough to be a small, medium forward.
So, he said, "Learn how to play as a
midfielder. Learn how to play on some of
the best players in the game." Look at
that highlights, P. You've played on
some of the best players to ever play
the game. Is is there one you who was
particularly tough for you? That's a bit
That's a bit drip tray, mate. What's
going on? Sam, can I What are you doing?
Don't Sam, can I like Excalibur? Can I
just quickly say your drip tray um has
really given me a massive boost to my
ego because when you've asked Simon
Black and Ben Cousins and Dan Swan who
their hardest opponent is um they have
very kindly sent me. Um, we now play
that on radio
and I play it to my kids all the time.
Who was it? Who was it for you? Who was
it? Um, oh, early early days. So, when I
was really young, um, Shane Crawford
towed me up the worst I've ever been
towed up. I was petrified playing on
Herie because he'd take me forward and
he could take a hanger on me. Adam Goods
was tough to stop cuz he was so big as
well as so athletic. Um, and then I
could I could have clubbed Simon Black
over the head with a baseball bat and he
still would have kept getting the foot
in. He was just phenomenal. Yeah, I
think you are in the conversation for
the greatest tagger of all time on and
off the field. Even as a boundary rider,
you used to like to tag players.
One of my biggest strengths the
last does go
on a few
times. Another big one you're creating
with Jack Crisp. Can I say you kept Jack
Crisp to no
possession as he he went to the boundary
line there. I got yelled at by the
cameraman that day. So cuz he's running
backwards the whole time doing that.
He's don't ever do that again. So you
get to 2007 Lingy. We know the backstory
of you now kid growing up a Jalong
supporter and you're part of this day.
44 years been a real drought. Is you
kicking the ceiler?
No. Well, it was a what a day. I mean,
you must have known so far out that it
was yours. And to see what this meant to
so all your heroes, those guys that you
went and watched. Yeah, absolutely. I
think you said before I went to ' 89,
92, 94, 95. I was one of those tortured
Cats fans who just wanted to see a
premiership. So that people often ask
me, you know, was that game kind of
boring? You know, did it just blew out
so much? I'm like, no, it's still the
greatest day I've ever been involved in
because it was great footy for us. It
was fun footie, but it meant the world
to so many people. and number of people
afterwards who were just in tears um
having finally experienced that
premiership. It was brilliant. There was
great scenes after the game of course
with your very loyal fan base and you
guys were straight over to the boundary
line to share this moment with your
fans. Here's a fan you're meeting uh for
the first
time. I've
got that's I've got to say you you
really give 110% with the fan
engagement. Can I ask if you have you
ever She just wanted She just wanted a
selfie, Nick. Unbelievable. Have you
ever seen that girl since? Uh I am happy
to say, Mick, that is my wife.
That is your wife. Three kids later.
Yeah. All right. Well, she may be your
wife, but I'm I'm surprised she still is
your wife after you made these comments
at a function.
That's still the greatest day ever.
Sorry, Doddy, when we got married and
having the kids and all that,
but the 07 grand final. Nothing will
ever top that.
Wow.
Do you want to walk that back at all?
Uh, yeah. We managed to work our way
through that. Well, you work through
that, but I don't know how you work
through this when she walked in and had
to witness this.
I
mean, what is going on there? And you in
a premiership cup in a compromising
position.
Busted, wasn't I? You were busted. Uh,
that was after my last game, that one.
That's a 2011. And being the captain, I
got to take the cup home with me. So,
that was nice. I didn't mind getting
busted with that one. So, an amazing
one. You mentioned 2011, so 7 911.
You're part of them all. You're the
skipper in 2011. It goes on to be your
last game. I'll talk to you about Chris
in a minute, but you must have known
going in that that was going to be your
last game. Not really, Andy. It's funny.
Um, I was pretty good at being able to
compartmentalize things and I just
pushed it aside as far as making a
decision. If you'd forced me and sat me
down and said, "You must tell me now.
Your life depends on it." Probably. But
I kind of just wanted to see how it
went. And it wasn't until the next day,
the Sunday, we're we're at one of the
local pubs and I was just sitting
quietly with Chris Scott and I just
said, "Uh, I'm done, mate. That that'll
do me." And he very kindly um and I love
him for this. Said, "Can I try and talk
you out of it?" And I said, "No, mate.
I'm I'm finished. I'm I'm at peace. I'm
I'm completely my body's cooked
mentally. I'm cooked. Um we've done it
and let's get on with enjoying the day."
So, it was the next day when I just
fully said, "Yep." after night with a
premiership cup. You were physically
cooked as well.
You took over for as um you took over
from Billy Brownless as the as the king
of Jalong or the mayor of Jalong. You
are absolutely um just loved down there.
And nothing proves that more than when
you are making Richo, our great mate
Richo. Speaking of beloved, no one more
beloved than Richo. Well, except you
because you make him look
like there at
all. It's just tough to watch, Mari. But
um you know the best thing about you
Lies, you're always think you're always
thinking of others and you got Richo
involved.
Rich has no idea, but he's probably
handling stolen goods
there. You don't go anywhere. There's
plenty more to talk to you about on the
other side of the road. Cameron
L. Spoke to Sam Mitchell the other day.
He said Josh Morris's nickname is Tank.
Not because of his build, Tank Morris.
because I think it was one of the
recruiters had a last name Morris and
his name nickname was Tank and he picked
this kid up so they gave him Tank
Morris.
Can we can we not play that? Is that we
can look forward to on Krock every
morning out there in Jalong is there.
I'm taking you on in the bre out of me
mate and you'll know it. I'll tell you
Krock it's what hours you doing? I'm uh
I'm doing 7 till 9 Monday to Thursday
because I'm inspired by some of the
great and who else is on the show? Uh
Tom and Logy
house household names
where everybody tune in tomorrow morning
and give them a good old listen. I
reckon tomorrow
can I just can I just point out Tom? Oh,
I don't care for logging. That's all I'm
saying. Can I just say one thing? That
anecdote was uh how would I how would I
say this? Brutal. Um and just in case
for those watching at home, if we've
lost you, um here's another Derek Ken
highlight. I just want to have a look at
this, mate.
Oh my god. There you go. You got your
back. Whatever makes Whatever makes a
man think that he can do that.
Same same thing that makes a man think
he can tell an anecdote.
Well, your time has come to be exposed
to one of the great segments on
Australian television. It's time now for
Sam's Trip Train.
Heavy heavy tonight. Loaded. I doubt
you'll be loaded. Doubt you'll be
replaying any of this on tomorrow's
show.
You know how drip tray works. Yes.
Punchy answers. You can you can pass if
you want. We're just here to just try to
find out things that we've somehow
you've mentioned your toughest opponent.
Or did you? No, I avoided that one. Oh,
well, who was it? No, you mentioned a
few. Yeah, you mentioned a few. Passing
on your toughest opponent.
Well, this is going to be
We're Have you got to do it? Kick it
hard. Kick it hard. There we go.
No way. How can this be?
How did he? He's got to be cleaner than
that. Pick it up first time.
All right. Listen. Remember punchy.
Yeah. Start the clock.
Going to start the alarm clock. That's
what I would suggest. Best player you
ever seen? Gary Albert senior. All
right. Uh Bomber Thompson was your coach
for most of your career. Can you
remember a single thing he ever said to
you? Uh yeah, a few sprays. Few big
sprays. Yeah. Any anecdotes?
Um here's one for you. What what you
know Jalong uh Jalong cop a little bit
of flack from time to time? What suburb
do people from Jalong hang [ __ ] on? Oh,
wow. I've got to walk down some of these
streets, but
some of the some of the northern suburbs
come a little bit behind. All right,
cool. Um, f favorite favorite redhead in
history.
There's Ralph Mouth, there's Ginger
Megs. You know who's your favorite? Um,
anyone you have one? Prince Harry.
Prince Harry until we stuff things up.
First car, Cameron Link, it was a VL
Holden Commodore tinted windows.
stolen if I shout out to dodgy. Favorite
food? Ice cream.
Well, that's you're it's like you're an
8-year-old child. What about something
savory? What's your like a meal? I love
a good steak. Okay. Great steak. How do
you have it? Medium rare. Nice. What's
your favorite cut? Uh porter house. Well
done. Choice sauce. Is that the best?
That's the correct choice of sauce. Uh
just a like a simple gravy. Okay. Right.
I would have thought it been a red wine
jew.
Anyway, favorite drink?
Uh freshlysqueezed orange juice.
That's a good answer.
Goes with the hair. What about the pulp?
Yeah, love the pulp. Leave the pulp in.
Do you do you squeeze it yourself? Yeah.
Favorite TV show growing up? Oh, growing
up, um,
I loved Succession recently. I'm trying
to think when you're growing up.
The Simpsons. Love The Simpsons. Okay,
cool. Favorite movie. In the Name of the
Father. Oh, strong. Daniel D. Lewis.
Yeah. Yeah. It's a real chickflick.
That's a real great
poss. But anyway, great soundtrack.
Favorite band? The Beatles.
Wow. It's some topical references there.
Ling. All
right. Chuterie boards are very big at
the moment. You know that, don't you?
You know that all the little nibbly food
stuff. You're putting I'm coming over
for dinner, but I've requested a
chuterie board. What are you What's your
big three? What are you definitely going
with? Cheese.
Bickies. Yeah. Cheese and bickies. And
some dip.
I I'd go I' I'd throw a little pickle in
there. Okay. Just a little a little one.
Just no. No meats. Any cured meats?
Yeah, sure.
I'm I'm going to suggest that you're
probably close to your last question.
Is that fair? Just when I was getting
going. Yeah. Well, we saw your wife
earlier. Yes. Best wedding present you
received? Uh cash.
That's it. All right. Two quick ones to
finish. Favorite color? Blue. Oh, that's
controversial.
And this is the big finish. Yeah.
Favorite vegetable
potato.
Very versatile. It is chips, mash,
roast, fries. Were you expecting I was
expecting carrot, but don't worry about
And that
was onion.
No one would pass on your toughest
opponent. You say, "Hey, he was a really
tough player." Because if you get people
on here in future, I still want them to
keep saying me, so I don't want to
exclude them. Oh, yeah. Okay. Hey, we we
love having you on, Le, and we
congratulations to you and your your
great football club. Well, they're
sometimes the envy of every other club
because you've got your own home ground,
your own place, and what I love is you
stick together. You lot. You really are
thick as thieves down there in Jalong.
There he is. He rates himself a little
bit. Uh, very nice, Stevie.
Congratulations. Five and five after 10.
Be pretty happy with that. Thanks for
joining us. Yeah, no worries. Thanks,
boys. Steve Johnson down in the rooms
and get the feeling Lingy trying to slip
one into him right now.
Can you
confirm that again? Why do he stays with
you? I don't know. Cameron, thanks for
coming on,
mate. Thank you so
much. Very
special up next.
is unfiltered. This club means
everything to me and it's where I want
to be for the rest of my life.
Unfiltered tonight on 7 and 7 plus.
Welcome back to the front bar for Han.
How good a joy to have them as part of
the show this year. Congratulations on
Daraban getting your Falcons getting up
two in a row.
A thumping.
Absolute thumping. A 10 goal thumping.
Who did you We No, we beat Wallen who
were very very good, great hosts and our
team played all right. So we're going
play all right. 10 goals up. You were
saying it could have been a lot bigger.
No, you said you won't be defeated this
season. No, we've already lost one so I
wouldn't have said that.
Well, there's a grading game anyway.
What are you doing? We're going. Okay.
Uh we'll see this week. They're going to
be tough. Uh round 10, of course, the uh
the real stuff that we've got to look
forward to. The big the big time stuff
starts tomorrow night. Going to be a
great game up there in Darwin. Gold
Coast are proving unbeatable up there.
The great Sir Doug Nichols round
indigenous names of the clubs and the
jumpers are such a great part of this
week and next week. A lot to look
forward to. Gee, that's a big game.
Richmond North Melbourne, isn't it? Big
game. It is. Could be another big win
for for the Tigers. Again, keeping a lid
on it. keeping keeping a little the
other big story for is the is the
injuries in this round and there's none
bigger than the one guy Sebastian's
carrying after the weekend. Uh ruptured
the Achilles ended up having to leave
the ground early.
I haven't seen this since Nikki
Webster's shoulder popped out during the
anthem
at the 2000 Olympics. Do you remember
that? I remember it. I mean that was
harrowing but this one's right up there.
I was once at a Kylie Manoke concert
that she cut short because of a torn
meniscus.
Yeah. Well, I always remember that
horrific head clash between the
Veronicus and
it's
just all the time. Kate Sabrano sang the
national anthem with with a severe
corking.
This is up there. Keith Keith Urban had
to leave leave a concert with osteitis
pubis once. You know that he did, mate.
It's an overuse injury. You know that,
don't you? Anyway,
time now for the multi.
Here we go. This could be a multi for
the ages. Get on board is my suggestion.
First up, and a nice touch by the Jalong
players on the weekend. These are
beautiful pictures as they gifted their
moms with flowers. So beautiful as they
ran out through the banner on Mother's
Day, each with a bouquet. And this is
what it's all about. And there's the
moms so proud of their sons. And there's
uh the flowers. And it's just great to
see. Um I'd like to wager all those
flowers were stolen from the Jalong
cemetery.
No. No. On the way to the ground. No,
you can't. No, you can't have it. No,
you can't have it.
Take the Giants at the line. I'll give
you $1.90 for that. What do you reckon?
Uh, I'll take it. Uh, here we go. Second
leg. Now, this car fan found out the
hard way that uh you got to be careful
where you sit. You can get too close to
the action. Here we go. And bang.
Oh, right in the head. That's why I go
to the footy.
Bang. There's the guy. I'd like to wage
that. That's the last time Bruce D sits
behind the girls.
See, it does. Yeah, I saw Bruce. That
was Bruce D.
You don't see him in public. No, you
don't. That's true. You can't have it.
But how about you take Nai Wangon Miller
who did the punching in that ball to
have over 26 and a half and you have a
$186. All right. I love it. Third leg.
Now, I think this aquarium worker is
taking the job of looking after the
animals a little too seriously. Here he
is. and
east. It's It's like an aquatic Dancing
with the Stars or something this one.
There it is just dancing up a storm hit
the aquarium. Um
Oh, what do you got? I'd like to I'll
get you out of this. Whatever happens,
I'll get you out of this. I'd like to
wager. I had no idea that the latest
Jaws movie was a chickflick.
Jaws seems to soften off. No. Well, I'd
also like to suggest guys, wait a
spoiler alert, but at the end I think
she gets her gills out.
It gets really It gets really uh at the
end it's it's it turns a bit 50 Shades
of Grayness.
You know what you're trying? No, hold
on. He can't have it. Can we have Can I
have another Derek Kicker?
Highlight. Well, look at that. Cheering
the multi.
We're going to run out of kick and
highlights. That's something I thought
I'd never say. You can't have it. But
how about you say, "Will Ashcraftoft
have over 25 and a half and you have 189
for that." All right, let's boot this
baby home. Huge news this week. as Ver
Coley and that's in retirement from the
test arena after 14 years and have been
so many magical moments. How do you pick
just one? Um this is my favorite
highlight from his stunning career.
Feeling all
cool look.
Hey man, you're all set for tonight.
When the town red says so. But before
you step out here, bro, that pimples.
Well, no need for the hotspot technology
to see the people. That's very clear.
I'd like to wager that's very good, but
stolen from an advertising campaign that
we did here on this show.
You've done a look, you're going to
rule. Hey man, you're all set for
tonight. When the turn red says so. But
before you step out here, bro, that
pimples
Jesus.
I can't remember. A lot of effort went
into that, but you can't have it. No,
you can't. But how about you take the
Tigers to beat the Kangas in 246? What
do you reckon? I reckon we might need to
get Derek kicking out of your life. If
you like the look of that and you just
on your own now pile it all up together.
There it is. 1643. Jump onto the feed.
Follow uh mix multi via the sports bet
app. Uh and of course place your bet.
Good luck. The last shout's coming up
next. Imagine what you could be buying
instead. For free and confidential
support, call the number on the screen
or visit the website.
Uh it's been great fun to be part of it
again tonight. Of course, looking
forward to the weekend's footage
starting tomorrow night. You're going to
see so many of the jumpers being worn
for Sir Doug Nichols round. Uh all the
clubs have gone to work. They've got
their stories to tell each of them. And
uh if you go to the club websites, you
can find out more about them. They do
such a great job of uh getting people
involved with their footy clubs to
contribute to the jumpers being worn uh
of course during the uh this magnificent
round
and it's obvious, isn't it? The carton
the Carlton version is the best of a lot
of them, isn't it? Without
any I would have thought so. Uh so it's
a great round of footy. We're going to
continue honoring those who have given
us so that's the last we'll see of that
one. Look at that. This is this is his
signature move. They'll be driving
without anyone in the premiers cup. If
anyone If anyone lingerie if anyone at
the footy club expects this to be coming
back, no chance. Uh front bar next
weekend. Uh what about what about this
cosy picket, Bobby Hill, Winston Abraham
and Steven Michael all the show next
week. That is going to be ridiculous.
That's insane. That is absolutely nuts.
Uh thanks to Derek and Dale Kicker for
being on the show tonight. Thanks to
Lingy. It's been a blast. Thanks to
Thanks for watching. See you.
