0:04 hello good day everybody welcome back to
0:07 our subject readings in Philippine
0:09 history we are still in our chapter two
0:12 which is all about the content and
0:15 contextual analysis of selected primary
0:19 sources in the Philippine history
0:24 so our topic for today will be the uh
0:28 last discussion under chapter two this
0:33 will be the uh last primary source that
0:36 we are going to identify or examine its
0:41 context and as well as context so again
0:43 this will be the last primary source
0:46 that we need to examine it's content and
0:50 its context for us to know deeply what
0:53 happened in this uh certain events and
0:57 we had our first primary source which is
1:01 all about the uh a brief summary of the
1:03 first voyage around the world by maalan
1:05 by Antonio Pega
1:08 fetta the second primary
1:11 source was the KKK and the caran and
1:14 Katipunan thirdd is the readings uh I
1:16 mean reading the proclamation of the Philippine
1:17 Philippine
1:20 Independence and our previous discussion
1:23 was all about a glance at the selected
1:27 uh uh Philippine political caricature in
1:30 Alfred McCoy's Philippine cartoon
1:32 or the political caricature of the
1:38 American era from 1900s to 1941 and now
1:41 this will be the last primary source
1:43 which is all about the
1:47 revisiting corazona Kino speech before
1:50 US Congress so in this topic we are going
1:51 going
1:55 to uh know and witness the corinos
1:59 speech and we can take cues not just on
2:02 Cory his uh individual ideas and
2:06 aspiration but also the guiding
2:08 principles and framework of the
2:11 government that she represented but
2:13 first let's take a look in the
2:17 background of Corazon aino so Maria
2:22 Corazon Cory sumulong quango aino mon
2:27 complete name was born on January 25
2:30 1933 in paniki Tarlac
2:33 she was born to The
2:36 prominent prominent quango family if we say
2:37 say
2:41 prominent important or or a famous
2:44 family and she served as the 11 take
2:48 note 11th President of the Philippines
2:51 no and take note that uh she served as
2:54 the 11th President of the Philippines
2:56 from February 25
3:01 1986 until June 303
3:06 1992 another is that uh died on August 1
3:11 2009 at Ma Medical Center at the age of
3:15 76 and she graduated at Far Eastern
3:18 University after graduating from
3:22 college uh Corey aino studied law at Far
3:26 Eastern University in
3:30 1953 okay next
3:33 Corino she was a Filipino politician who
3:35 served as the 11th President of the
3:38 Philippines and the first woman to hold
3:41 that office again first woman to hold
3:45 that office and she was the first
3:48 democratically elected president no
3:51 again first to
3:54 highlight democratically elected
4:00 president and first famale president in
4:03 Asia and if I'm not mistaken kakino was
4:07 indeed the first famale president not
4:11 only in Asia but also in the entire
4:15 world next she was the most prominent
4:17 figure of the 1986 People Power
4:21 Revolution because uh Corey aino became
4:25 a prominent figure a Philippine history
4:27 for her role in The People Power
4:33 Revolution in 19 86 which uh she led the out
4:35 out
4:41 orwa or mahawa president Marcos and restore
4:43 restore
4:48 democ and 11th president s
4:51 Philippines Mark as a significant moment
4:55 in the Philippine history and pave the
5:00 way for another famale leaders in as IIA
5:04 and around the world and also she was
5:07 named in a Time magazines as a woman of
5:11 the year in 1986 prior of this she had
5:15 not held any other elective office
5:19 B prior experience in elective office or in
5:21 in
5:24 politics leadership during at critical
5:29 period Philippine history she earned respect
5:30 respect
5:33 both domestically and internationally
5:34 internationally
5:36 and uh
5:40 presidency uh paved the way for the
5:44 Philippines to regain its Democratic and
5:51 para inspired and Oban women in politics
5:55 globally next is that she was married
6:00 to senator benno aino againa married to
6:04 Senator benino aino Jr the Stan chest
6:15 correcty Corino was married
6:17 oror benno aino
6:20 aino
6:25 Pro prominent no prominent opposition
6:30 figure in the stound chest stound
6:32 critique of President
6:35 Ferdinand Marcos Nino
6:40 aino no nino aino was a former Senator
6:48 and had been a vocal critic of Marcos
6:52 especially authoritarian Rule and
6:57 Corruption during the terms of Marcos
7:00 and she Cor aino emerged as a leader of
7:03 the opposition after he uh her husband
7:07 assassinated on August 21 1983 upon
7:09 roring to the Philippines from Exile in
7:13 the United States so see Cory aino
7:16 central figure in this in the call for
7:20 Democratic reforms and uh standing
7:22 against the authoritarian rule of
7:24 President Ferdinand
7:27 Marcos Emer
7:33 emergence as in leader was fluid no by
7:38 the uh tragic event of her husband's
7:40 assassination and the desire for
7:51 so speechy but before proceed
7:56 speech ill and death of Cory aino so on March
7:57 March
8:00 24 2008 aino family announced that the
8:03 former president had diagnosed with colal
8:04 colal
8:08 cancer upon her being earlier informed
8:11 by her doctors that she had only three
8:15 months to leave so she pursued medical
8:17 treatment and
8:20 chemotherapy so uh kakino the former
8:22 president of the Philippines was
8:27 diagnosed with colal cancer so colal
8:31 cancer disase in which cells in the
8:35 colon or rectum grow out of control so
8:37 she was uh diagnosed with this type of
8:40 cancer in March
8:45 24 uh 2008 despite undergoing
8:49 treatment undergoing treatment including
8:52 uh surgery and chemotherapy medical
8:55 treatment and chemotherapy Corey aino
8:59 pass away on August take note passed
9:02 away on August s
9:09 August August okay namat on
9:18 year9 okay her battle with uh coloral
9:21 tenser brought attention to the
9:24 importance of early detection and
9:28 treatment of the disease so a series of
9:32 healing for aino were held throughout
9:34 the country intended for her recovery
9:37 because Cory aino known Woulda as
9:39 devoted in Catholic faith and her
9:42 illness uh garnered
9:45 widespread public concern and sympathy
9:48 and also during put time Catholic Church
9:50 being a significant institution in the
9:53 Philippines played a central role in
9:55 providing both uh spiritual and
9:58 emotional Comfort to the nation during
10:00 challenging time times such as the
10:04 health struggles of the prominent
10:07 figur Corey
10:10 aino in a public uh statement during one
10:13 healing mass on May 13 2008 Corey aino
10:15 said that her blood test indicated that
10:17 she was responding well no responding
10:21 well to treatment her hair and appetite
10:25 lost were apparent so during s healing
10:27 on May 13
10:30 208 uh 20
10:34 so statement about health condition in that
10:35 that
10:38 statement blood test uh indicated
10:41 positive progress in response cancer
10:44 treatment that she was undergoing
10:45 however the
10:49 acknowledge some visible effects
10:53 treatment such as hair loss and lost of appetite
10:55 appetite
10:59 no and Maria coron Cory sumulong kakino
11:01 function as the symbol of the
11:04 restoration again take note symbol of
11:07 restoration of democracy and the
11:10 overthrow of the Marcos dictatorship in
11:13 1986 yes that's correct that Corey
11:16 played a crucial role in the restoration
11:18 of democracy in the Philippines she
11:21 became a symbol of People Power
11:26 Revolution year 1986 which uh led to the
11:30 overthrow of the long uh stand
11:33 authoritarian regime of President Ferdinand
11:46 Marcos next here is this one
11:49 so uh the EDSA People Power Revolution
11:51 which installed Corey aino in the
11:53 presidency put the Philippines in the
11:56 international Spotlight for overthrowing
11:58 a dictator through peaceful means so the
12:02 the is a People Power Revolution in 198
12:06 uh6 bro uh International Spotlight now
12:08 attention to the Philippines
12:13 and event took place along the
12:19 EPO de los Santos Avenue or EDSA Mai
12:22 major highway in Metro Manila and this
12:26 event P was last lasted from February 22
12:34 People Power Revolution was often cited
12:38 no was often cited as an inspiration for
12:42 another movement advocating for
12:45 democracy and human rights around the
12:49 world and Cory was easily a figure of
12:52 the said Revolution as the Widow of the
12:55 slain maros oppositionist and former
12:59 Senator Beno noinoi aino Jr therefore cor
13:00 cor
13:06 aino corino's role in uh role Nia Eda
13:08 People Power Revolution was deeply
13:12 connected personal history and the
13:15 tragic events surrounding the assassination
13:17 assassination
13:22 husband Senator Beno Nino aino Jr in
13:26 1983 next Corey was hoisted as the
13:30 antithesis of the Ator no anti thisis of
13:33 dictator indeed that candidacy Corey and
13:37 her subsequent uh presidency symbolize a
13:41 break from the oppressive rule of U
13:44 Marcos and that's why Corey was hoisted
13:47 no Corey was hoisted as the
13:51 antithesis of the dictator which was
13:55 Marcos next is theod her image is a
13:58 morning widowed uh housewife who had
13:59 always been in the the shadow of her
14:01 husband and relatives and had no
14:04 experience take note had no experience
14:06 in politics was just oppose against
14:11 marus statement stat menhip eloquence
14:14 Charisma and cunning political skills C
14:20 Corey was uh portrayed as a grieving
14:24 Widow limited political experiences and
14:27 this was cons uh this uh yes this was
14:31 con contract Ed sharply Kang Marcos who
14:35 was depicted as a very skilled and very
14:38 charismatic statement which political abilities
14:46 or in terms politics so neverless P Cory
14:50 was able to capture the imagination of
14:52 the people whose rights and freedom had
14:55 long been compromised throughout the
14:59 Marcos regim so indeed that corzan aino
15:03 was able to capture the imagination of
15:05 the Filipino people who had suffered
15:08 years of political repression human
15:11 rights uh violation of Human Rights
15:14 corruption and Marcus regim and her
15:18 personal story as the graving Widow of
15:22 uh Senator benno added a powerful and
15:26 emotional Dimension to her candidacy and
15:30 Cory aino became a symbol of resilience
15:34 hope and fight for the country's uh
15:37 democracy this is despite that the fact
15:39 that Corey came from a Hender family in
15:42 Tarlac and owned vast state of sugar
15:45 Plantation and H relative occupy local
15:49 local and national government position
15:52 so it's true that c Cory aino came from
15:54 a prominent and a wealthy political
15:59 family in Tarlac no so um
16:01 uh I mean her family the Quang of family
16:06 no had had a uh history of involvement
16:09 in both local and national government
16:12 positions or politics so what happened
16:15 in the People Power Revolution of 1986
16:17 so let's see some happenings during the
16:20 People Power Revolution of
16:24 1986 so the People Power Revolution of
16:28 1986 was widely recognized no widely
16:30 think not how widely recognized around
16:33 the world for its
16:37 peaceful character or peaceful
16:39 Revolution and the People Power
16:42 Revolution of 1986 the
16:45 Philippines it gained
16:48 or Global recognition for its peaceful
16:54 Revolution
16:57 Filipinos NE gathered
17:01 alonga protest against the authoritarian
17:05 rule of President ferdinan Marcos so
17:08 when former Senator Nino aino was shoot
17:10 at the
17:13 tarmac of the Manila International
17:15 Airport August 21
17:19 1983 the Marcus regim greatly suffered a
17:22 crisis of legitimacy no because the
17:24 protest from different sectors
17:27 frequented different areas in the
17:31 country and on August 21 19 uh 83 no
17:36 former um Senator Beno Nino aino Jr he
17:38 was ass assassinated at the tarmak of
17:41 Manila International Airport so the
17:44 implication is that this event
17:46 significantly uh damaged the legitimacy
17:49 of Marcus region so the crisis of
17:52 legitimacy K crisis of legitimacy
17:55 suggest that government
17:59 face severe lose of public trust and
18:02 credibility due to controversial circumstances
18:04 circumstances
18:13 also students religious groups Business
18:17 Leaders to every day citizen organize
18:20 and participate in the revolution and
18:23 this protest where a manifestation of
18:25 the widespread dis
18:28 dissatisfaction Sam Marcos government
18:30 questioning its credibility and
18:34 governance and Mark a torning point in
18:37 Philippine political history eventually
18:40 contributing to the People Power
18:43 Revolution so Marcus credibility in the
18:46 International Community also suffered
18:48 paired with a looming economic crisis
18:50 Marcus had to do something to prove to
18:53 his allies in the United State that he
18:54 remained to be a
18:57 democratically anointed uh leader of the
19:00 country so the assassination of Nino
19:04 aino not only sparked domestic Perle but
19:07 also nakad damage
19:10 president H Ferdinand Marcos on the
19:15 international stage no Nala or down
19:21 credibil Marcos and an uh impending
19:24 economic crisis threatened by the
19:29 stability s Philippines and in response
19:33 challenges no and to reassure his
19:36 allies in the United States s Marcos was
19:40 compelled to take actions to demonstrate
19:43 that he's still the legitimate
19:45 Democratic leader of the country which
19:49 is Philippines so Marcos called for a
19:53 snap election in February 1986 where
19:57 Cory aino the Widow of slain Senator was
20:01 convinced to run no Cory aino was
20:05 convinced to run against Marcus so snap
20:08 election so if we say snap election is
20:13 an election called earlier than expected
20:16 or scheduled so in an attempt to
20:20 stabilize his regim and prove his
20:23 Democratic legitimacy himself Marcos
20:26 both domestically and
20:28 internationally Ferdinand Marcos
20:31 nag snap election in February
20:33 February
20:37 1896 and Cory the Widow assassinated
20:41 Senator Nino aino was persuaded to run
20:44 against Marcos in this
20:48 election so the canvasing was riged to
20:50 maros favor but the people expressed
20:54 their protest uh people expressed their
20:56 protest against the corrupt and
20:59 authoritarian government because during
21:02 the snap election in February 1986 in
21:05 the Philippines allegations of
21:09 widespread El uh El uh
21:12 electoral electoral fraud and
21:15 manipulation emerg with a canvassing of
21:18 votes no conving of votes heavily
21:23 criticized for being rigged in favor of
21:26 Marcos leading military officials of the
21:29 region and martial law orchestrators
21:34 themselves Juan p eni and Fidel V Ramos
21:36 plotted to take over the presidency
21:39 until civilians heed the call of the
21:43 Manila Arch Bishop haime cardinal sin no
21:46 and other civilian leaders gathered in in
21:47 in
21:50 EDSA and that's correct because during
21:52 the EDSA People Power Revolution in
21:57 1986 Juan Pon enre was the minister they
21:59 cannot have minister of defense and
22:04 cidel Ramos uh the vice Chief of Staff
22:05 of the Armed
22:07 Forces so
22:11 this military official in Rel and Ramos
22:14 both of them had been associated with
22:17 the Marcus regim and the implementation
22:20 of Martial law and initially plotted to
22:22 take over the presidency of Ferdinand
22:27 Marcos however plans to talk an
22:30 unexpected turnor when
22:34 Cardinal AR Bishop of Manila is call to
22:37 the public to support the the rebel
22:41 military leaders in response to this
22:45 call along with the urging of the other
22:48 civilian leaders masses of ordinary
22:51 Filipinos gathered at EDSA torning the
22:54 military rebellions into a people's
22:59 movement shot next is the overwhelming
23:01 presence of civilians in tsas
23:05 successfully torn EOP into a civilian
23:07 demonstration the thousands of people
23:10 who gathered over through Ferdinand
23:13 Marcos from the presidency after
23:17 21 years indeed the overwhelming
23:20 presence of civilians in EDSA during uh
23:24 People Power Revolution in 1986 played a
23:28 decisive role in torning what initial
23:32 began as a military cou into a massive
23:35 and peaceful civilian uh demonstration
23:38 so the collective action of thousands if
23:42 not millions of Filipinos from lahi or
23:47 various walks of lifea along EDSA
23:50 creating a human barricade against any violent
23:52 violent
23:56 escalation and uh this peaceful assembly
24:00 fueled by by the uh determination of
24:03 ordinary citizens and the withdrawal of
24:06 support from K military and political
24:10 figures effectively led to the
24:15 overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos from the
24:21 presidency after his 21y year rule
24:24 so that's what happened in the People
24:26 Power Revolution of 1986
24:28 1986
24:30 so this is
24:34 a a picture of the new president no
24:38 Corazon aino takes uh her off as a
24:40 president marking the culmination of the
24:44 4 day People Power Revolution in
24:49 1986 so next picture this is the 4-day
24:52 event from February 22 to 25 will
24:55 forever be Etch in history as the
24:59 bloodless Revolution which uh culminated
25:02 with the end of a dictatorship that was
25:06 also marked by a human rights violation
25:09 violation
25:12 so during the People Power
25:17 Revolution and Cory aino together with
25:20 uh this Filipino people say Revolution
25:23 so a thousand of Filipino
25:26 Filipinos took to the streets and
25:31 clamored for freedom from the two deade
25:35 Iron Fist rule of then president
25:38 Ferdinand Marcos
25:41 banana and this is Ferdinand Marcos uh
25:44 final speech after his inauguration and
25:48 before his flight to Hawaii and
25:51 Ferdinand Marcos held on the presidency
25:54 from 1965 until the apprising forced him
25:56 and his family to leave the country in
26:00 1986 after the People Power Revolution
26:04 uh his to DED rule saw the imposition of
26:07 Martial law and various human rights
26:09 abuses especially against those he deem
26:10 critical of the
26:14 government and the Marcus family here
26:17 the Marcus family moments after taking
26:19 his oth of office in ceremonies in
26:22 February 25 1986 so
26:26 NAA Marcos and the Marcos uh the
26:31 children of Marcos SI bong bong iy and
26:34 Irene part and now let's see and witness
26:36 the content of the speech of President coron
26:38 coron
26:41 aino this is a speech to a joint session
26:44 of the US Congress delivered 18th of
26:48 September 1986 Washington District of
26:53 Colombia so on 18th of September 1986 7
26:56 months since Corey became president she
26:57 went to the United State and spoke
26:59 before the joint session of the US
27:02 Congress Corey was welcomed with a long
27:05 Applause as she talked to the podium and
27:08 address the United State about her
27:10 presidency and the challenges faced by
27:14 the new Republic so approximately seven
27:17 months into her presidency Corey aino
27:20 traveled to uh United States during her
27:23 visit she addressed a joint
27:26 session of the United State Congress no
27:29 the speech was a significant moment in
27:31 the Philippine American relation and an
27:35 opportunity for president aino to share
27:38 uham vision for the Philippines update
27:41 the US government and the development in
27:44 her uh Administration and of course seek
27:47 support for the country's political and
27:51 economic stability and aino speech uh
27:53 emphasize democratic values and the
27:56 commitment to rebuilding the Philippines
27:58 after the disruptive years under
28:03 Demarcus regim so she began Her speech
28:05 with a story of her leaving the United
28:08 State three years prior as as newly
28:10 elected wife of noinoi
28:16 aino and she then told that uh and she
28:20 then told of noinoi Nino's
28:23 character convection and resol and
28:26 opposing authoritarianism of Marcos she
28:29 talk of the three times that they lost
28:33 no she talk she talked three times that
28:35 they lost n noi
28:40 including on Aug uh 23 the first time was
28:42 was
28:45 when uh the dictatorship detained dinoy
28:49 with other denters denter oppose in
28:53 politics or oppose law in relation to
28:58 the politics so Cory related so
29:01 with this statement No the government
29:07 treated um him very badly putting uh
29:12 Nino aino in a small and stuffy cell
29:17 earless ha in a Mil in a military camp
29:20 and threatening to harm him despite this
29:26 Nino stayed for p days 43 days they
29:30 didn't tell his family where he was and
29:34 making feel them like they had lost inoi so
29:42 family so this was the first Detention
29:46 of noo aino next Cory
29:53 part I know you know how to read Nam so
29:57 Cory explain that after surviving the
30:01 first uh detention face serious charges
30:06 like subversion murder and other crimes
30:10 so he was Tried by a military court but
30:14 noo strongly doubted it's fairness
30:20 noo fairness in protest um he went on
30:22 Hunger Strike refusing to eat for 40
30:27 days no fasting for 40 days to empath is
30:31 objected objection to the proceedings
30:33 and Cory treated this event as the
30:37 second time that they that their family
30:40 lost noo so
30:46 again face SES sub uh sub verion monish
30:49 uh attempting to undermine the
30:54 government and M and other crimes next
30:56 and Corey
31:00 said is summarized that uh n no faced
31:02 charges like submersion and murder
31:04 leading to a military commission trial
31:08 no leading to a military uh commission
31:13 trial so in response G challenge si uh n
31:16 no challenge noi with the authority of
31:19 the commission and went on a fasting s viewing
31:20 viewing
31:23 survival as a sign
31:27 from God no intended him for another Fai
31:29 despite the government's effort to keep
31:34 him alive after his brain was affected H
31:39 Nino ended his fast on a 40th Day so his
31:42 determination to see the fast through
31:45 demonstrated his unwavering commitment
31:48 to his cause and that's the second when
31:53 they lost Ino so Nino's death was the
31:56 third and the last time again Nino's
31:58 death was the third third and the last
32:00 time that Cory and their children
32:05 children lost Eno so she continued so
32:11 through this passage no Cory aino losing
32:15 someone was in a painful
32:19 way political circumstances so the new
32:21 came to us in
32:25 Boston it had to be after the three
32:29 happiest of our lives together though according
32:31 according
32:46 per and the courage and Faith by which
32:56 so no as uh nothing
33:04 nothing dictator
33:07 Marcos uh 2
33:10 million people
33:14 no aside
33:24 actively
33:27 attendo and this signifies if powerful Collective
33:29 Collective
33:35 enough
33:38 cementerio and Corey attributed the
33:40 peaceful itsa Revolution to the
33:43 martyrdom of nooi she stated that the
33:46 death of nooi sparked the Revolution and
33:49 the responsibility of offering the Democratic
33:50 Democratic
33:53 alternative and had fallen on her
33:56 shoulders so Cory's address introduced
33:58 as to her Democratic philosophy which
34:01 she claimed she also acquired from
34:05 noinoi so Cory credited the peaceful Ida
34:08 Revolution to noo martyrdom
34:12 stating noo was ignited
34:17 Uprising and inspiring them to raise up
34:21 no in demand for change and democracy
34:24 she expressed no also s cor Express a
34:27 sense of responsibility
34:31 to uh provide a democratic alternative
34:34 no Democratic Al
34:37 alternative Mona a duty that she felt
34:40 had fallen on her shoulder so Cory
34:43 address unveiled her Democratic philosophy
34:49 influence
34:51 influence in shaping her vision for the
34:55 country's future and craving for
34:58 democracy so she are aru so with this
35:01 statement No Cory aino expressed his
35:03 unwavering belief in
35:07 democracy belief in democracy following
35:09 n's principle even challenging
35:13 circumstances like riged in 19 uh 84
35:17 snap election under martial law despite
35:19 warnings from lawyers of dictator no
35:22 because Cory choose to engage trusting
35:25 in the people's intelligence and viewing
35:31 it is it as a way to prepare them for a
35:35 future democracy and to test or gauge
35:38 the opposition's strength even if that
35:41 participating might legitimize a fraudulent
35:42 fraudulent
35:47 process so statement nolight cor aino
35:50 miraculous Victory as a result
35:54 miraculous Victory as a result of people
35:56 struggle during her speech and you
36:01 discuss Saia initial action no initial
36:03 action as the president of the newly restored
36:06 restored
36:10 president of the Philippines no and
36:14 emphasize intention to Foster
36:18 reconciliation reconciliation after s
36:22 div uh divisive dictatorship
36:26 of um Marcos so Corey also emphasized
36:28 the signific ific no significance of
36:30 itsa People Power Revolution describing
36:35 it as a limited Revolution limited
36:37 Revolution yes limited Revolution that
36:41 respected the life and freedom of every
36:43 Filipino Citizen and with this it
36:46 suggests a commitment to a peaceful
36:50 transition and a focus on unity in the
36:55 afterm of turbulent period in the n in
36:57 nation's history
37:00 she also boasted of the restoration of
37:02 fully constitutional government whose
37:05 Constitution gave outmost respect to the
37:09 Bill of Rights no so Bill of Rights Bill
37:13 of Rights summary of fundamental rights and
37:14 and
37:17 privileges uh guaranteed to a people
37:20 against violation by the government so
37:24 Cory reported to the US Congress so
37:27 restore democracy by ways of
37:30 democracy so this implies that the
37:32 transition from dictatorship to
37:35 democracy is being carried out in
37:38 accordance with Democratic principles and
37:40 and
37:42 processes completing the Constitutional
37:45 structure so this could mean uh
37:49 finalizing and implementing the legal
37:53 and institutional framework that governs
37:55 the country under the new democratic system
37:57 system
38:02 and a full respect for Bill of Rights
38:06 and dra which be submitted later this
38:08 year to a popular
38:11 referendum this means that the people
38:14 will have a direct say in accepting or
38:17 rejecting the proposed constitutional
38:20 changes and caning election for both
38:23 national and local positions this marked
38:27 a k step in the establishment of a fully
38:29 functional democratic government
38:32 allowing citizens of Philippines to
38:35 choose their representatives at various
38:39 levels of governance so Corey then
38:42 proceed proceeded on her peace agenda
38:45 with existing communist uh Insurgency
38:48 aggravated by the
38:53 dictatorial uh yes a aggravated by
38:56 dictatorial and authoritarian measure of
39:11 Insurgency
39:15 and CH Cory aino embarked on a peace
39:17 agenda peace
39:22 agenda aim resolving the
39:25 Insurgency no insur uh Insurgency
39:26 through nonmilitary [Music]
39:28 [Music]
39:36 asserted summarize and hampered by
39:41 rights it
39:44 suggests a disregard for principles such
39:47 as individual freedoms dignity and fair
39:49 treatment and possibly oppressive
39:53 measures that uh violated human rights
39:56 standard and Corey's peace agenda
39:58 involves political initiatives and
40:01 reintegration program to persuade
40:03 insurgents to leave the country side and
40:05 return to the mainstream Society to
40:08 participate in restoration of democracy
40:11 and she invoked the path of Peace
40:13 because she believed that it was the
40:17 moral path that a moral government must
40:20 take so k a statement underscore Nisha
40:22 about Cory aino peace agenda that
40:24 consists of political initiatives and
40:26 reintegration program
40:29 a is convincing
40:33 insurgents abandon rural areas and
40:37 reintegrate into a mainstream Society so
40:41 the overarching goal is their um active
40:44 involvement in restoring democracy
40:46 democracy so the mention of invoking the
40:49 path of Peace reflects ao's belief in
40:53 the moral responsibility of a government
40:58 to pursue in nonviolent means
41:01 nevertheless uh with this no statement
41:05 No suggest despite prioritizing peace
41:09 see Corey is very firm or very matatag
41:11 in her commitment protect freedom and
41:15 democracy when they are under threat and
41:22 why
41:27 mag against freedom and democracy
41:30 with this statement also convey like
41:34 Abraham Lin Abraham linc 16 president
41:38 from United States so C Corey recognizes
41:42 the potential necessity of using Force
41:46 before considering mercy and she is very
41:48 determined no now to take whatever
41:52 measures are required para is Safeguard
41:54 Integrity freedom of her country which
41:57 is the Philippines
42:00 so with this statement also Corey toring
42:02 to address the controversial issue of
42:06 the Philippine foreign debt amounting 26
42:09 billion at the time of her speech
42:11 highlights a critical
42:15 Financial um challenge soing Dept had
42:16 significantly increased during the
42:20 Marcos regim implying a legacy of financial
42:21 financial
42:23 burdens Financial burdens that the
42:26 country had to navigate and Cor
42:28 acknowledgement and approach to this
42:30 issue would be crucial in understanding
42:33 her policy Direction and
42:36 properties in addressing The Economic
42:38 Consequences of the past administration
42:40 and Corey expressed her intention to
42:43 honor this depths despite mentioning
42:46 that people did not benefit from such
42:50 death and thus she uh mentioned his
42:52 protestation about the way Philippines
42:55 was deprived of choices to pay those
42:59 debt Within the capacity of uh Filipino
43:02 people statement No indicate that s
43:05 Corino voiced her concerned about the
43:07 limited option available to Philippines
43:11 for paying its uh utang in a manner that
43:15 was sustainable or manageable for uh its
43:17 Citizen and her focus on the capacity of
43:24 debt highlight concern for the economic
43:27 welfare and sity of her country which is the
43:28 the
43:31 Philippines and she
43:35 lamented it Highlights part no it
43:37 highlights the situation faced by the
43:40 Philippines at the time with the burden
43:42 of substantial foreign debt that need to
43:45 be addressed
43:49 reflect Corey aino with her frustration
43:52 with a condition to the Philippine death
43:55 or utang which she perceived as having
43:58 been incured without direct
44:01 benefits Filipino
44:05 people next she continue that while the
44:07 country had experienced the calamities
44:08 brought about by the corrupt
44:11 dictatorship of Marcus no commensurate
44:14 assistance was yet to be extended to
44:16 Philippines and she even remarked that
44:18 given the peaceful character of its a
44:21 People Power Revolution ours must have
44:26 been the cheapest Revolution ever so yes
44:29 the chiefest revolution ever reflects on
44:34 the peaceful uh nature of the apprising that
44:36 that
44:41 led maros in February 1986 unlike
44:44 retion involv of significant violence
44:47 and destruction People Power Revolution
44:51 was largely nonviolent with millions of
44:54 people Gathering and demonstrating
44:57 demand chain and
44:59 and
45:03 statement uh about fulfilling the most
45:07 difficult condition of death NE uh neg
45:10 negotiation refer to uh to the
45:13 restoration of democracy
45:19 and responsible government and statement
45:22 it highlights the willingness of even
45:24 the poorest and unemployed Filipinos to
45:29 offer their Liv for the ca of democracy
45:33 gemphase Marcos dep commitment among the
45:35 Filipino to democratic principles and
45:38 their desire no for a government that
45:43 was accountable and responsive to its people
45:45 people
45:49 so B Cory aino slums
45:52 area food money [Applause]
45:54 [Applause]
45:58 materials need is democracy
46:01 Lang and
46:18 Philippines NPA or New People's
46:22 Army so Cory further lamented that these
46:25 problems worsed worsened by the
46:27 crippling depth because half of the
46:32 countes export earning amounting to $2
46:35 billion would go to pay just the
46:37 interest of the debt who benefited the
46:43 receive and Cory then asked rather
46:46 compelling questions to the US Congress
46:50 question so AO appeal was not just for
46:54 economic Assistance or death relief but
46:57 for moral and political support as the
47:00 Philippines navigated the challenges of
47:04 rebuilding its institution and economy
47:08 in aftermath of dictatorship and Corey
47:11 ended Her speech by thanking America for
47:14 serving as home to her family for what
47:17 she referred to as the three happiest
47:20 years of lives together she enjoyed
47:23 America in building the Philippines as
47:26 new home for democracy and tning the
47:29 count is a shining Testament of our two
47:32 Nations commitment to Freedom so aino
47:36 eloquent closing not only expressed
47:39 gratitude but also laid out uh a vision
47:41 for a future in which Philippines and
47:44 the United States continue to stand
47:48 together in defense of democracy so this
47:52 Vision aimed to inspire uh both Nations
47:54 to work toward a relationship that was
47:57 not just trans sectional but deeply
48:02 rooted in a mutual commitment to the
48:04 principles of freedom and democracy so
48:07 therefore uh revisiting coron aino
48:09 speech before the US Congress no it
48:12 provides a compelling insight into a
48:15 pivotal moments in the Philippine
48:18 history and its relation with the United
48:22 States so uh her address not only
48:25 underscored the challenges faced by the
48:28 pH Philippines in the aftermath of the
48:31 Marcos dictatorship but also uh
48:34 highlighted the shared values and
48:38 potential for collaboration between two
48:42 countries and that is the end of our
48:44 discussion thank you so much for
48:47 watching I hope you learn something new thank
48:48 thank you
