The analysis questions the depth and nuance with which Hogwarts Legacy's writers will handle the backstory of the African companion character, Natsai Onai, particularly concerning the historical context of British colonization in her homeland and established lore about African magic users.

really think about the companion
characters that I will gain in Hogwarts
Legacy the more worried I become about
the strength of the storytelling I'm
especially nervous about how the African
NPC companion natsayonai will be handled
there are deep implications with her backstory
backstory
and I seriously question whether or not
the writers can deliver the Nuance required

welcome to the channel my name is Magic
Maestro and I've been closely following
development information about the
upcoming video game Hogwarts Legacy
Avalanche software recently released
backstory details about three of the
known companion characters that you will
acquire as you play the game
one such companion not sionai is a
member of Gryffindor House natsai Is Not
British she's actually a transfer
student from Africa before Hogwarts she
attended wagadu reportedly the largest
Wizarding School in Africa
wagadu students don't receive a letter
via Al when they are accepted instead
they're admitted via dream messenger and
wake up with an inscribed stone in their hand
hand
not sayonai grew up in matabili land a
former British colony which is now a
region in Southwestern Zimbabwe and this
here is where I start to have questions
the game takes place in 1890. what was
happening in matabili land during the
1880s and 1890s let me tell you despite
those who argued against allowing Cecil
Rhodes to create a chartered company in
the region he used his pocketbook to
pave the way much a British colonization
in the area had to do with potential
gold mining loving Gula the leader of
the matabili kingdom was deceived by the
British and was slowly encroached upon
until War inevitably broke out they
didn't stand a chance against the
British Maxim gun the first machine gun
after a second war eventually peace was
negotiated but matabilan became part of
British Rhodesia
to what extent is the backdrop of
British colonization going to affect the
motivations of natsai unai it seems like
JK Rowling waved her hand when it came
to potential conflict between the
magical and Mughal worlds for her The
Wizarding World was real world adjacent
with the explanation that due to
persecution witches and wizards remain
separated or camouflaged from what
happened in our world though she didn't
have a hand in the story of this game
to what extent have the writers taken
her approach to dealing with Mughal
historical timelines in the game
natsunai's mother is the Hogwarts
Divination teacher divination is the use
of magic to foresee the future was she a
former professor at wagadu did she leave
matabili land because of the future
conflict with British colonizers there
are a number of complications and
questions that pop up when we start to
look more critically at the intersection
of Our Two Worlds so that leads me to
ask the question how can Avalanche
possibly make the Story Land right how
much of African history will they
incorporate or ignore in the telling of
the story making Nats ionai's character
African has additional implications
on that Scion I use a wand in the game
according to JK Rowling African witches
and wizards didn't use wands until
around 1900 and instead used hand
gestures and finger pointing adopting
the wand out of convenience
I'm not sure why it was so important to
remove the use of Wands in Africa if you
can use magic without wands then what's
the point of using them at all how cells
don't use wands and neither do any of
the other magical creatures and if all
of book 7 wasn't nearly 200 000 words
about whose wand Is It Anyway
then we could just ignore the use of
Wands completely
Rowling states that African magic users
were feared because of their Adept use
of magic without wands because it gave
them deniability when questioned about
the misuse of magic
I was only waving I never meant his chin
to fall off
I'm not sure if this writing from her
has aged particularly well she wrote
that a king body a student of wagadu
succeeded Albus Dumbledore as the
Supreme mugwump of the international
Confederation of wizards this kind of
comes across like tokenism or the mirror
appearance of diversity it would have
been better if she had allowed writers
from other countries to contribute to
the crafting of the extended Wizarding
World and to provide their own adaptations
adaptations
gamers are quick to call out real or
perceived tokenism and social justice
activism in their video games it's hard
for gamers to swallow a pill that many
development companies won't take
themselves no one can deny the
inequality in video game development
people want to be represented in the
stories they play but they don't want to
be a check mark on a video game
developer's checklist either to avoid
tokenism in the character of not sionai
Avalanche riders need to on the one hand
create a strong human character with
strengths weaknesses hopes and fears but
they also can't ignore a character's
Roots what social and environmental
factors influence the development of
their personality will the writers of
Hogwarts Legacy fall into the Trap of
tokenism with not cyanide's character I
can only hope their characterization is
