0:30 weby for several Sunday evenings now we
0:32 have been looking at the very familiar
0:35 parable of the prodigal son found in
0:40 Luke 15 beginning at verse
0:44 11 our Lord is speaking and he said a
0:46 certain man had two
0:50 sons and the younger of them said to his
0:52 father father give me the portion of
0:56 goods that falleth to me and he divided
0:57 unto them his
1:00 living and not many days after after
1:02 that the younger son gathered all
1:04 together and took his journey into a far
1:08 country and there wasted his substance
1:09 with riotous
1:12 living and when he had spent all there
1:15 arose a mighty famine in that land and
1:17 he began to be in
1:20 want and he went and joined himself to a
1:22 citizen of that country and he sent him
1:24 into his fields to feed
1:27 swine and he would Fain have filled his
1:29 belly with the husks that the swine did
1:33 to eat and no man gave unto
1:37 him and when he came to himself he said
1:40 how many of my father's hired servants
1:43 have bread enough and Des spair and I
1:46 perish with Hunger I will arise and go
1:50 to my father and will say unto him
1:53 father I have sinned against heaven and
1:56 before thee and I'm no more worthy to be
1:59 called thy son make me as one of thy highed
2:00 highed
2:04 servants and he arose and came to his
2:06 father but when he was yet a great way
2:09 off his father saw him and had
2:12 compassion and ran and fell on his neck
2:16 and kissed him and the son said unto him
2:19 father I have sinned against heaven and
2:23 in thy sight and am no more worthy to be
2:26 called thy son but the father said to
2:29 his servants bring forth the best robe
2:32 put it on him and put a ring on his hand
2:35 and shoes on his feet and bring the
2:38 fatted calf and kill it and let us eat
2:41 and be merry for this my son was dead
2:45 and is alive again he was lost and is
2:53 merry now as you read this story you are
2:56 confronted with the fact that actually
2:58 there are three
3:00 sons involved in in the
3:03 story there is the younger
3:06 son and there is the older son he's
3:14 25-32 and there is the Eternal
3:18 son Jesus Christ who was telling the
3:21 story it doesn't cost us a great deal to
3:24 tell a story I'm not talking about
3:27 telling a lie that always costs I mean
3:30 simply telling a story mothers and
3:32 fathers sit down with their younger
3:34 children and tell them a story doesn't
3:37 cost anything these stories have been
3:41 passed down from generation to
3:43 generation it cost Jesus Christ
3:46 something to tell this
3:49 story for when he was telling this story
3:53 he was revealing what he had to do to
3:56 make this story
3:59 possible you see the greatest truth that
4:04 we can learn is truth about Jesus
4:07 Christ all Bible knowledge focuses on
4:11 Christ Beyond The Sacred page I seek
4:16 thee Lord my spirit pants for thee thou Living
4:18 Living
4:22 Word it's tragic that we waste so much
4:24 time that we could be spending learning
4:25 more about
4:27 Christ I was telling my Sunday school
4:30 class this morning that when our lord
4:33 Jesus returns and we face him some
4:36 Christians are going to be
4:40 ashamed Jesus Christ will be a stranger
4:42 in some respects to some
4:45 people my dear friends 30 seconds after
4:49 you see Jesus Christ you will
4:52 wish you could live your life all over
4:53 again and so will
4:55 I then why don't we start living that
4:58 way now and one of the most important
5:00 things that we can do is to learn more
5:02 about him now this parable of the
5:06 Prodigal Son teaches us a great deal
5:09 about the Lord Jesus Christ and it does
5:11 so in a very interesting fashion if
5:21 son and compare him with the Lord Jesus
5:24 Christ I did not say
5:26 contrast I said
5:29 compare you'll learn a great deal about
5:32 the savior here you see when we contrast
5:33 we show how things
5:37 differ when we compare we show how they are
5:37 are
5:40 alike of course immediately Your
5:43 Righteous Soul speaks out and says how
5:47 could this young man who was such a
5:50 picture of wickedness and Rebellion ever
5:52 teach us anything about the Lord Jesus
5:54 well if you look deeply enough you'll
5:56 find that there are a number of
5:59 comparisons between the Prodigal Son and
6:04 the Lord Jesus that teach us about him
6:06 and I think in the end help us to love
6:09 him more for
6:12 example both of them were beloved of their
6:13 their
6:15 father the younger son came to his
6:17 father and said father give me the
6:20 portion of goods that falleth to me now
6:24 this man loved his son he loved his son
6:27 while he was at home he loved his son
6:29 after he left home he loved his son when
6:33 the boy came back home the trouble was
6:35 this young man didn't realize how much
6:39 his father loved him this young man had
6:42 to learn the hard way what it meant to
6:48 be embraced and kissed and forgiven and
6:51 clothed and fed by the love of his
6:53 father I suppose there are young people
6:56 like that today they take their parents
6:58 for granted and never really realize how
7:02 much their parents love them both of
7:05 these were loved by their father the
7:08 prodigal son was beloved by his father
7:10 it's too bad he had to learn the hard
7:13 way the father loved him so much he even
7:16 permitted him to go and have his own
7:19 way the father could have constrained
7:22 him the father could have bribed him he
7:25 didn't he said Son the only way you're
7:27 really going to learn how much I love
7:30 you is the hard way you could stay here
7:32 and learn the easy way but you won't do
7:35 it I love you too much to make a robot
7:38 out of you I love you too much to wind
7:41 you up like a little toy I'll have to
7:44 let you have your way but I want you to
7:47 know that eventually my love is going to
7:49 draw you home that's what drew the boy
7:52 back home what did he say he said my
7:56 father takes better care of his hired
7:58 servants than these people are taking
8:00 care of me
8:02 you're better off being my father's
8:05 hired servant than you are being a son out
8:06 out
8:09 here you see he awoke to the fact that his
8:10 his
8:13 father loved him and that's what took
8:16 him back home now pause with me and
8:18 think about how much God the father
8:22 loved his son now when you're witnessing
8:24 to unsaved people and you want to
8:26 convince them that God loves them you
8:28 turn to the Gospel of John and that's a
8:30 good place to turn over and over again
8:32 in the Gospel of John we're taught about
8:35 God's love for a lost world God's love
8:38 for Sinners did you ever page through
8:40 the Gospel of John and learn how much
8:43 God the Father loves his
8:46 son you see we don't think about this
8:50 when we come to Calvary and we see one
8:54 hanging on the tree in agony and blood
8:59 we say oh how much God loves me
9:01 but we don't pause to think how much he
9:04 loves his son that's why the story of
9:08 Abraham and Isaac is in the Bible every
9:11 father can identify with that story in
9:15 Genesis 22 because there is the heart of
9:20 a loving father as he places his only
9:26 son upon the altar oh what a picture of
9:30 Love well turn to John chapter 3
9:33 we always read verse 16 God so loved the
9:35 world how about verse
9:42 35 Jesus says the Father loveth the Son
9:46 and hath given all things into his
9:49 hand The Prodigal came and said father
9:52 give me the portion of goods that
9:55 belongs to me now according to the Old
9:58 Testament law if a man had two sons the
10:02 old son got 2/3 of The Inheritance the
10:04 younger son got
10:07 one3 but here's Jesus Christ saying my
10:11 father loves me so much he has put all
10:13 things into my
10:24 20 Jesus says for the Father loveth the
10:28 Son and showeth him all things that he
10:30 himself doeth
10:32 you see if the younger son had come to
10:35 his father and said father give me my
10:38 inheritance and father show me how to
10:40 use it show me what I should do with it
10:42 that would have been a different story
10:44 but he didn't he said give me what
10:46 belongs to me and he took off and spent
10:48 it the way he wanted to Jesus says my
10:51 father loves me and he has put all
10:53 things into my hands and more than that
10:56 he shows me all the things that he's
10:59 doing and so I can take what he G gives
11:03 me and use it the way he wants me to use
11:07 it how about John 15 here is a remarkable
11:10 remarkable
11:12 statement John
11:17 15:9 as the father hath loved me says
11:22 Jesus so have I loved
11:26 you now that's a remarkable
11:28 statement young lovers have a difficult
11:30 time expressing to each other how much
11:33 they love each other our songwriters are
11:35 making a fortune figuring out new ways
11:38 for people to say I love you Jesus
11:44 Christ is saying here that he loves us
11:48 as much as the father loves him now the prodigal
11:49 prodigal
11:53 son could not share any
11:56 love the tragedy was he loved only
11:59 himself but Jesus Christ is saying my
12:01 father father loves me he's put all
12:04 things into my hands my father loves me
12:07 he shows me what he's doing and the love
12:09 that he has shown toward me I'm showing
12:12 toward you I can understand why God the
12:14 father would love God the son God the
12:17 son is perfect I can't understand how
12:20 God the son could love me as much as God
12:24 the Father loves him that just staggers
12:27 me how about John
12:32 17 verse 2 3 Jesus Christ is praying to
12:36 his father and he says that the world
12:40 may know that thou has sent me and that
12:44 thou Hast loved them as thou Hast loved
12:47 me now there it is again the Lord Jesus
12:51 loves me as the father loves him and the
12:54 father loves me as he has loved the Lord
12:57 Jesus now the love that the prodigal son
13:00 had was very selfish he wanted what he
13:03 wanted and he went out and bought his
13:06 friends and bought his popularity and
13:08 when he ran out of money he ran out of
13:10 friends and his popularity rating
13:13 dropped considerably in fact he wasn't
13:15 even liked very much by the
13:20 pigs but Jesus Christ is saying I love
13:23 you as the father loves me and the
13:26 father loves you as he has loved me our
13:28 whole experience is an experience of
13:32 love both of these Sons were loved
13:34 greatly beloved of their
13:37 father now this makes Calvary much more
13:40 meaningful to me when I come to the
13:44 cross of Jesus Christ and realize the
13:46 love that's there is not a selfish
13:50 love the father loves me as he loved his
13:53 son the son loves me as the father loved
13:57 him both were beloved of their
14:00 fathers there's a second comparison
14:03 between the Prodigal Son and the Eternal
14:05 Son of God and it's this both of them left
14:06 left
14:09 home now I know the prodigals motives
14:12 were wrong he left home for the same
14:13 reason many people leave home when
14:16 they're young he wanted Freedom he
14:17 didn't know what it was but he wanted
14:21 Freedom he ended up in bondage he wanted
14:25 enjoyment he ended up in sorrow
14:27 emptiness he wanted to live and he ended
14:30 up dying he wanted to find himself and
14:32 he ended up losing himself many kids
14:35 have done this it's the going thing
14:38 today but our Lord Jesus Christ when he
14:39 left home left home with a different motive
14:40 motive
14:44 altoe he left home that he might go to
14:46 the far
14:50 country and bring people back with him
14:53 now consider with me two amazing facts
14:57 number one the home that Jesus left was
14:59 far greater than the home that the
15:02 prodigal left I don't know much about
15:04 this man's home I get the impression
15:06 they were rather well-to-do people they
15:08 had hired servants they could afford to
15:11 kill a fatted calf many Jews couldn't do
15:13 that they didn't they didn't have that
15:16 kind of wealth his son his older son
15:18 worked out in the field they were able
15:20 to call in an orchestra and have music
15:23 and celebration as you read this story
15:25 you sort of get the impression this boy
15:27 left a pretty good home they weren't
15:30 living in some sh back somewhere they
15:32 had things pretty well but I want you to
15:35 know that when Jesus left his home to
15:38 come to this earth he left a far greater
15:41 home it always amazes me to consider
15:43 that Jesus Christ was willing to come to
15:48 this earth he came into his own his own
15:50 received him not the hym writer puts it
15:52 out of the ivory
15:57 palaces into this world of wo only his
16:03 great eternal love made my savior goal I
16:06 would suggest a second astounding fact
16:08 not only did the Lord Jesus when he left
16:12 home leave a greater home behind but
16:15 when Jesus came into the far country he
16:19 went into a much more difficult
16:21 situation now the prodigal son got
16:22 exactly what he
16:24 deserved when we look at this story we
16:27 say it's exactly what you deserve you're
16:28 reaping what you've sown you've made
16:31 your bed lie in it stewing in your own
16:34 grease it's exactly what you ought to
16:37 have we can say that cuz it's not
16:38 happening to us it's happening to somebody
16:39 somebody
16:42 else ever stop to think how far away was
16:46 the far country that Jesus came to watch
16:50 this now he not only came from Heaven to
16:54 Earth but he came from Heaven to Earth
16:57 to the depths of
17:01 hell when Jesus Christ died on the cross
17:05 it was as though he visited the very pit
17:09 of Hell because on his body was placed
17:12 the sin of all the world now don't ask
17:15 me to explain it I can't the most
17:18 brilliant Theologian in history can't
17:21 explain it we have theories we have
17:24 explanations we don't really understand
17:27 it they stretched out his hands and
17:29 nailed him to a cross with one hand he
17:33 reached all the way back to Adam the
17:35 first sinner with the other hand he
17:38 reached all the way down to the end of
17:41 time to the last Sinner and somehow
17:44 between those two hands he was able to
17:48 take upon himself that gigantic burden of
17:50 of
17:53 sin talk about going to a far
17:56 country The Prodigal Son went to a far
17:59 country and suffered for his own sins
18:01 Jesus came into a far
18:04 country and suffered for sins that were
18:07 not his own both of them were beloved of
18:10 their father both of them left home
18:12 there's a third
18:16 comparison both of them were
18:18 lavish in their spending that's where
18:21 the word prodigal comes from the Latin
18:24 Vulgate version of the New Testament has
18:27 a little note in the margin with the
18:29 Latin word prod
18:33 which really means lavish or wasteful it
18:35 comes from that verse that says he
18:38 wasted his substance with riotous living
18:40 to be prodigal doesn't mean to leave
18:43 home many people have left home and
18:45 never been prodigal to be prodigal means
18:49 to be wasteful to be extravagant to
18:51 waste what you have it means to be
18:54 lavish in your spending it can be used
18:56 in a good sense or a bad sense for
19:02 prodigal did you ever
19:04 ever
19:08 visit some area in this world where
19:10 there were just thousands and thousands of
19:12 of
19:15 flowers and very few people to look at
19:18 them do you know that right now up in
19:20 the crevices of some of our highest
19:23 mountains our little flowers growing
19:25 that nobody's ever going to
19:28 see on a clear night in Chicago which
19:31 you occasionally happens you can look up
19:35 and you can just see all those stars and
19:38 then you get dizzy by considering the
19:40 fact that Beyond them are trillions more
19:45 and Beyond them are zillions more Galaxy
19:47 upon Galaxy is all of this really
19:50 necessary God the father in creation was
19:52 so prodigal he just
19:56 spent so lavishly he's decorated this
19:59 world with beauty he's decorated the
20:02 heavens with Glory well God the son was
20:05 prodigal he wasn't prodigal with money
20:06 because he didn't have
20:09 any Peter had to go catch a fish to pay their
20:10 their
20:13 taxes Jesus said the foxes have their
20:16 dens and the birds have their nest but I
20:18 have no place to lay my head he wasn't
20:22 carrying any Conrad Hilton or uh Motel
20:26 credit cards he just was poor and yet he
20:29 was prodigal I mean by that he was
20:33 lavish in the way he spent of himself
20:35 consider for
20:39 example the lowest sinner could come to
20:44 him and he'd receive that Sinner and
20:46 forgive you didn't have to have a ticket
20:48 or an appointment
20:50 appointment the
21:06 stricken most socially
21:09 rejected sick person could come to him
21:11 and be
21:14 healed a leper could
21:17 come Jesus after a synagogue service
21:19 went to Peter's house and Peter's
21:21 mother-in-law was sick and Jesus raised
21:23 her up from her sickness and the word
21:25 got around the town that Jesus was there
21:27 healing people and everybody waited for
21:30 the Sabbath day to end because these
21:31 good Orthodox Jews would not want to be
21:33 healed in the Sabbath day and as soon as
21:36 it was Sundown and Sabbath was over they
21:38 came to the door of Peter's house the
21:41 whole town met at the door says Mark and
21:45 Jesus spent those next hours just
21:48 magnificently extravagantly healing
21:55 you he met 10 lepers one day and he said
21:57 go show yourself to the priests and they
21:59 turned and were healed and out of the 10
22:02 one came back and said thank
22:05 you you see my Lord was very lavish in
22:07 his spending especially when he went to the
22:08 the
22:10 Cross when he went to the Cross he gave
22:13 the ultimate in spending now it doesn't
22:15 cost me a great deal to hand somebody
22:19 some money for a place to sleep or a bit
22:22 of food to eat or some clothing to wear
22:24 but if you go to someone and say look
22:25 I'll give my life for you that's the
22:28 ultimate you can't do much more than
22:30 that greater love ha no man than this
22:31 that a man lay down his life for his
22:33 friends and Jesus laid down his life for
22:36 his enemies and he gave that
22:40 final gift of the spending of
22:42 himself you see the prodigal son was
22:47 wasteful in sin Jesus was extravagant in
22:51 Grace both of them were lavish in their
22:56 spending now the prodigal made himself
22:59 poor which leads us to our next
23:01 Point both of
23:03 them became
23:06 poor for you know the grace of our Lord
23:09 Jesus Christ says 2 Corinthians 8:9 that
23:12 though he was rich yet for your sakes he
23:15 became poor that ye through his poverty
23:17 might be rich now there's nothing
23:19 nothing difficult about that verse he
23:23 was rich he became poor we were poor he
23:26 made us rich The Prodigal Son started
23:29 off Rich father give me Father gave it
23:34 to him the Greek word here uh verse 13
23:37 He gathered all together literally means
23:40 he turned his Goods into money he took
23:41 all of his inheritance and turned it
23:43 into money pocketed the money and went
23:46 off and wasted the money he started off
23:48 rich and became
23:50 poor when he got back home again he
23:53 became Rich put a ring on his finger put
23:56 shoes on his feet let's have a party the
23:59 Lord Jesus Christ started out rich
24:01 we could just spend the rest of this
24:04 week discussing how rich he was before
24:05 he came to this
24:09 earth The Riches of his glory The Riches
24:13 of his power The Riches of his wisdom he
24:16 was rich he became poor he did not
24:19 become poor to try to build himself a
24:22 reputation as the prodal son did he did
24:24 not become poor to try to gather around
24:27 him a group of cheerleaders saying oh
24:28 what a wonderful person as did The
24:32 Prodigal Son no the Lord Jesus became
24:36 poor because he knew we were
24:39 poor he came where I
24:43 was poor and he made himself poor for my
24:46 sake I'm not talking simply about
24:48 poverty of material
24:51 things I'm talking about poverty of
24:55 spiritual things my Lord Jesus Christ
24:59 entered into I don't lose this my Lord
25:03 Jesus Christ entered into the tragic
25:04 waste of
25:08 sin let me go one step further what are
25:13 the wages of sin
25:16 death and he suffered those wages Now
25:18 The Prodigal Son spent everything was
25:21 left broke ah but he was able to go back
25:25 home again the Lord Jesus Christ spent
25:28 everything he had he gave every
25:30 everything that he
25:32 had not that he just might go home again
25:35 but that he might take somebody with him
25:37 I've often wondered what happened to the
25:39 Friends of the prodigal
25:42 son what about those girlfriends he used
25:43 to have what about those friends that
25:47 used to Crows with him what kind of a
25:49 what kind of a crowd did he leave
25:52 behind our lord Jesus when he went to
25:55 the Cross became poor not that he make
25:57 might make other people poor but that he
25:59 might make his Rich which leads us to
26:01 our fifth
26:04 comparison both were beloved of their
26:08 father both left home both were lavish
26:10 in their spending and both became poor
26:14 and both became
26:16 servants Now The Prodigal Son never
26:18 intended to be a servant he intended to
26:19 be a
26:21 ruler and he had his money in his
26:23 pockets and he headed off for the far
26:26 country and said I'm going to be Big Man
26:28 on Campus or whatever they said back in
26:32 that day I'm going to be Joe college or
26:34 whatever they said back in that day I'm
26:37 going to be the vi or whatever they
26:40 called it back in that day and he was
26:43 boy when he hit town something really
26:46 hit he was interviewed on the TV
26:49 programs and he was interviewed on the
26:51 radio programs and he was important till
26:55 his money ran out when his money ran out
26:59 that was the end he became a servant
27:01 actually he was a servant before he left
27:04 he was a servant of things things had
27:06 gotten a hold of his life somebody has
27:10 well said that money is a marvelous
27:13 servant but a terrible
27:16 master and money had become his master
27:19 popularity and reputation and
27:22 entertainment and enjoyment and thrills
27:25 and Pleasures had become his master and
27:29 so he became a slave to thing
27:32 he became a slave to people he had to
27:34 have these people around him he'd pay
27:37 any price to be important he became a
27:40 slave to people and he became a slave to
27:43 pigs there's a little bit of sarcasm in
27:46 this story Jesus is saying the pigs were
27:49 in better shape than he because they at
27:50 least had someone taking care of them
27:53 nobody took care of him they at least
27:55 had something to eat he had nothing to
27:57 eat you know what our Lord is saying
27:59 here now if this shocks you I'm sorry
28:02 but it's scriptural Jesus is saying here
28:06 that a man out of the will of God is
28:07 lower than an
28:11 animal you know why we were created
28:13 higher than the animals these pigs were
28:15 at least fulfilling their purpose in
28:19 life by being pigs he wasn't fulfilling
28:22 his purpose in life he was meant to be a
28:24 son and he became a
28:26 servant the Lord Jesus Christ became a servant
28:28 servant
28:31 one of the most beautiful passages
28:33 anywhere in the Old Testament is there
28:36 in Isaiah where the prophet Isaiah talks
28:41 about Jesus Christ the servant behold my
28:44 servant shall deal prudently he says
28:47 chapter 53 of Isaiah you have God's
28:51 righteous servant going to the Cross
28:55 Jesus came as a servant he said to his
28:58 disciples the Gentiles like to Lord it
29:01 over each other if you have a position
29:04 among the Gentiles you Lord it over
29:06 people and show how important you are
29:08 and you throw your weight around he said
29:10 it won't be this way among you if you
29:14 want to be great become the servant I am
29:17 among you as one who
29:20 serves can we ever forget that picture
29:23 in the upper room where Jesus laid aside
29:27 his outer garments put on a towel got
29:29 down on his hand hands and knees and
29:33 washed his disciples
29:34 feet a
29:38 servant and his ultimate Act of service
29:42 was on the cross Philippians chapter 2
29:44 he humbled himself and became obedient
29:46 unto death many people have been
29:49 obedient unto death but Paul goes on to
29:52 say even the death of the Cross and the
29:55 people that Paul was writing to never
29:58 could be crucified a Roman citizen could
29:59 could not be
30:01 crucified and a Roman citizen wouldn't
30:03 even talk about
30:07 crucifixion and Paul says he became a
30:10 servant he became obedient obedient unto
30:13 death obedient under the death of the
30:17 Cross both of them became servants well
30:20 we move on quickly to a sixth
30:23 comparison both of them were
30:26 forsaken now when the prodigal son was
30:28 home he had people taking care of his
30:31 father cared for him the servants cared
30:33 for him I doubt that his elder brother
30:36 did but perhaps at some point he did but
30:39 at least the father did his father cared
30:41 for him and the father told the servants
30:44 take care of my son but you know when
30:47 the younger son left home and got
30:51 involved in sin he was
30:53 forsaken I wish we could somehow
30:58 convince people that sin leads to lonely
31:00 less and
31:03 isolation I watch it here in the city of
31:06 Chicago I meet people who are
31:11 lonely I don't mean Solitude I enjoy
31:14 Solitude there's sometimes when I just
31:16 get away and go sit on a park
31:19 bench and just just think and pray and
31:21 meditate you're all alone the phone's not
31:22 not
31:24 ringing I enjoy
31:29 solitude but nobody enjoys loneliness
31:30 when you're lonely you can be in the
31:32 middle of a big crowd and still not feel
31:35 it you're lonely down inside sin always
31:39 leads to loneliness sin leads to being
31:43 forsaken this fella had purchased
31:46 friends when his purchase price was gone
31:49 his friends were gone he had purchased
31:52 Thrills when his purchase price was gone
31:54 the Thrills were gone everything he
31:56 lived on was a substitute you see when
31:58 he left home he left the real thing
32:01 you'll excuse the term his father had
32:04 sincere love for him his father had
32:06 sincere care for him his father would
32:09 have loved to have showered blessings
32:11 upon him but the boy wouldn't let him
32:13 and little by little this boy moved into
32:17 lonel and isolation and he was forsaken
32:20 he admits it how many hired Servants of
32:22 my fathers have breed enough in despair
32:27 I'm perishing with Hunger no man cared
32:32 for him did you notice that no man gave unto
32:34 unto
32:37 him the Lord Jesus Christ was
32:40 forsaken it's interesting as you read
32:42 the Gospel of John to see how popular he
32:45 is at the beginning he's invited to a wedding
32:46 wedding
32:50 Feast he's invited to be with the people
32:52 5,000 people follow him and he feeds
32:55 them and they say let's make him
32:58 King and then the numbers start to to
33:03 diminish until you get to uh chapter 13
33:06 of the Gospel of John and you have Jesus and
33:08 and
33:11 12 then Judas goes out and you have
33:13 Jesus and
33:15 11 they go to the garden and you have
33:17 Jesus in
33:20 three they arrest Jesus the disciples
33:23 forsake Him and flee and it's Jesus and
33:27 two Peter and John Peter denies him and
33:30 goes about to weep John goes away it's
33:33 Jesus and the father remember Jesus said
33:35 to his disciples all of you are going to
33:37 leave me but the father won't leave me
33:39 but there on the cross what did Jesus
33:42 cry out my God my God why hast Thou forsaken
33:43 forsaken
33:46 me you see he knew what it was to be
33:48 forsaken now hear me God has never
33:51 forsaken you I've had people come up to
33:54 me with bitterness and say why has God
33:57 forsaken me and I've said sir man God
34:00 hasn't forsaken you if God forsook you
34:03 for one second do you know what would
34:06 happen to you you'd die in him we live
34:08 and move and have our being God has
34:16 son and like the prodigal the Lord Jesus
34:19 Christ was forsaken which leads us to
34:22 our final
34:27 comparison both were welcomed home again
34:29 now it's not hard for us to understand
34:32 why the prodigal would be welcomed home
34:34 technically he could have been killed
34:36 according to the Old Testament law a man
34:40 had a rebellious wasteful son he could
34:43 kill him he could call the Elders of the
34:45 city together and say my son is a rebel
34:47 and they'd pick up stones and stone
34:51 him but the father didn't do that the
34:53 whole point of this story is that God
34:56 welcomes Sinners who repent and who will
34:58 come home again
34:59 and so prodigal came home and he was
35:01 welcomed in fact everything he was
35:03 looking for out in the far country he
35:04 found it
35:06 home what did he want out there in the
35:08 far country well he wanted to have
35:10 enjoyment parties he found one at home
35:13 he wanted music he found it at home he
35:15 wanted clothes put a robe on him put
35:17 shoes in his feet he wanted jewelry put
35:20 a ring on his finger he wanted to eat
35:23 kill the fatted calf everything he was
35:26 looking for out in the world of sin he
35:30 found back home again when he
35:32 repented I wonder what it was like when
35:34 the Lord Jesus Christ was welcomed back to
35:40 Glory look ye Saints the sight is
35:43 glorious see the Man of Sorrows
35:47 now oh I tell you what must it have been
35:51 like when our Lord Jesus Christ ascended
36:04 thing all of the Angelic hosts were
36:07 gathered together to sing his
36:12 Praises welcoming the son back home
36:15 again he came back home not because he'd
36:16 run out of
36:18 money he'd come back home because his
36:20 work was
36:22 done you see the prodigal son wanted to
36:24 come home to
36:27 work make me a servant Jesus Christ
36:29 Christ came home because his work was
36:39 sovereign for on the cross he said it is
36:42 finished in the garden he said father I
36:44 have finished the work that you gave me
36:46 to do now give me the glory that I had
36:49 with you before the world
36:52 was when the Prodigal Son came home they
36:55 put a ring on his finger a picture of
36:58 sunship oh but when Jesus came back back
37:00 there was no need to affirm his sunship
37:04 he was the son of God from all eternity
37:06 when The Prodigal Son came home they put
37:09 a robe on him but when Jesus came back
37:19 light and you see if Jesus Christ had
37:22 not gone home
37:26 again nobody could ever go
37:32 home but because he went home you can go
37:36 home that's why Jesus said I am the
37:40 way the truth the life no man comes to
37:43 the father but by
37:46 me and because the Lord Jesus Christ
37:47 went back
37:51 home it says to me there is a way of
37:53 Salvation there is a fountain filled
37:57 with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins
37:59 and I can say to anybody here
38:02 tonight if you'll come through Jesus
38:05 Christ you'll come to the father and
38:11 welcomed this then is The Prodigal
38:14 Son as I look at this story and consider
38:17 these comparisons and there are many
38:20 more I say to myself what a wonderful
38:23 savior is Jesus my
38:28 Lord a wonderful savior to me
38:32 I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus
38:34 the Nazarene and wonder how he could love
38:35 love
38:38 me a sinner condemned
38:45 unclean I have to say Amazing
38:48 Grace how sweet the sound that saved a
38:50 Wretch like
38:54 Me what about you have you come to know
38:57 Jesus as your savior and if you do know
39:00 him him do you really appreciate what he
39:05 you heavenly
39:08 father thank you that Jesus Christ was
39:11 willing to do all of this and more for
39:14 us I pray for any here who don't know
39:17 the Savior that Lord they'll trust him
39:20 they'll come to trust him believe on him
39:23 and receive everlasting life thank you
39:26 that we have this living way this true
39:28 way to
39:30 Heaven oh I pray that there will be
39:34 those here now who will believe and be
39:37 saved and father help those of us who
39:41 are believers to love the Lord Jesus
39:45 more for it's in his name that we pray
