Core Theme
The passage explores the profound encounter between Simeon, a devout man awaiting the Messiah, and the infant Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple, highlighting Simeon's prophetic recognition of Jesus as salvation for all people and a sign of both redemption and division.
[Music]
when mary and joseph came into the
temple in jerusalem to fulfill the
commandments of the law
they were met by a stranger a man named
simeon you'll find the record in luke
chapter 2 beginning at verse 25.
and behold there was a man in jerusalem
whose name was simeon
and the same man was righteous and devout
devout
waiting for the consolation of israel
and the holy spirit was upon him
and it was revealed unto him by the holy
spirit that he should not see death
before he had seen the lord's christ
and he came by the spirit into the
temple and when the parents brought in
the child jesus to do for him after the
custom of the law
then took he him up in his arms and
blessed god and said lord
now let us thou thy servant depart in
peace according to thy word
for mine eyes have seen thy salvation
which thou has prepared before the face
of all people
a light to lighten the gentiles and the
glory of thy people israel
and joseph and his mother marveled at
those things which were spoken of him
and simeon blessed them and said unto
mary his mother behold
this child is set for the fall and
rising again of many in israel and for a
sign which shall be spoken against
yea a sword shall pierce through thy own
soul also that the thoughts of many hearts
hearts
may be revealed
now we don't know how old simeon was
one tradition claims he was 113 years
old but it's only a tradition in fact we
aren't sure he was old at all except for
one thing it seems like he was waiting
for god to call him home
lord now let us thou thy servant depart
in peace
we have a feeling that simeon was an
older man i like to think that he was an
elderly man because he is such a good
example of what elderly believers ought
to be
and a good example of i hope what i will
be when i am like simeon
well let's notice three different scenes
in simeon's experience here they're
really quite simple but they're very
important to you and me today
simeon makes some statements here that
we desperately need to understand and
apply in our lives today
in verses 25 and 26 you find simeon
watching and waiting
and then in verses 27 through 33 you
find simeon worshipping
and then in verses 34 and 35 you find
simeon witnessing that's easy to
remember isn't it first we find him
watching and waiting
and then he's worshiping and then he is witnessing
witnessing
simeon was watching and waiting the word
of god tells us in verse 25 he was
waiting for the consolation of israel
and that word consolation is the very
same word that has translated comforter
in the gospel of john waiting for the
comforter of israel this is the
messianic hope
simeon was a man who understood the old
testament truth he knew that the messiah
was going to come
and the holy spirit had told simeon that
he would not die until he had seen the
lord's messiah that's an amazing thing
isn't it by the way
i certainly hope you don't die before
you have seen god's salvation
i'm not talking about physically seeing
the lord jesus i'm talking about seeing
him spiritually being born again would
be a terrible thing for a person young
or old to die
having never seen god's salvation
well simeon was part of a faithful remnant
remnant
there were several people there in
jerusalem who were ministering in the
temple and waiting for god to fulfill
his prophecies in the old testament anna
was another one verse 36 we'll be
talking about her in a future study
joseph of arimathea who helped to bury
the body of our lord jesus belong to
this remnant
luke tells us in luke 23 verse 50 and
behold there was a man named joseph a
counselor and he was a good man and just
the same had not consented to the
council indeed of them that is the
sanhedrin when they indicted the lord jesus
jesus
he was of arimathea a city of the jews
who also himself waited for the kingdom
of god and so there was that godly
remnant waiting for the prophecies to be
fulfilled you know god has always had
his remnant
back in elijah's day the prophet thought
he was the only one and god said elijah
don't get proud i've got seven thousand
people who have not yet bowed the knee
to baal there was that godly remnant in
fact at the end of the old testament
when everything looks so bleak
we read in malachi chapter 3 and verse 16.
16.
then they that feared the lord spake
often one to another and the lord
hearkened and heard it and a book of
remembrance was written before him for
them that feared the lord and it thought
upon his name
even during those bleak days
of malachi when the priests were corrupt
and the people were unbelieving there
was a godly remnant that got together
they prayed and god noticed it you may
feel like you're the only one in your
home or your neighborhood or your office
or your school
remember now there are others just be
like simeon now keep watching and
waiting now we aren't waiting for the
first coming of our lord we're waiting
for the second coming of our lord aren't
we he was looking for the promised
messiah to come the first time well
we're looking for him to come the second
time and he's going to come and the
interesting thing is this simeon's life
was controlled by this hope
now so should our lives be controlled by
the blessed hope and every man that hath
this hope in him purifyeth himself even
as he is pure
because he was looking for the messiah
he was a righteous man that is a just
man who obeyed the law a devout man who
walked with god he believed the word of
god he was led by the spirit of god he
was taught by the spirit of god
it's a beautiful picture of what we
ought to be today
we like simeon should be watching and
waiting but while we're watching and
waiting we should be walking with the lord
lord
and living according to the leading of
the holy spirit of god
it was a common jewish prayer in that day
day
may i see the consolation of israel well
simeon had that privilege
he was waiting for the consolation of
israel he was watching for it and then
the child came into the temple brought
by his parents simeon watching and waiting
waiting
once again we don't know how old simeon
was but i've noticed this about elderly
people sometimes their eyes get a little
dim and sometimes they get a little
impatient but here is a godly old man
whose eyes are clear watching for god to
work and who's patiently waiting for the
consolation of israel
simeon watching and waiting
luke 2 25-26
now in 27-33 we have simeon worshipping
the spirit of god told simeon to go into
the temple and there he encountered mary
and joseph and the baby and the minute
he saw that baby he knew
this is the messiah that took a great
deal of faith
many jews were waiting for the messiah
to show up in the temple as a judging
priest or as a judging conqueror but
here comes jesus into the temple as a
little baby
and then took he up in his arms that's
what older folks like to do don't they
i've watched it in church so often when
there's a baby around
an old grandmother or grandfather will
just reach out and take that baby up in
his arms that's where babies belong in
the arms of those who love them and he
blessed god he worshipped god that's interesting
interesting
john wrote in his first letter that our
hands have handled of the word of life
now here is simeon reaching out and
taking in his arms the very word of life
what a tremendous thing this was and he
worshipped god
he blessed god this hymn that he
recited this praise that he lifted to
god is rather interesting it's a worship
hymn verse 28 says he blessed god he
didn't think about himself he didn't
think about israel he just lifted up his
heart and he blessed god for what well
for salvation
lord and that word lord is an
interesting word it gives us our english
word despot
it means sovereign lord the lord who is
completely in control of everything
lord now let us thou thy servant depart
in peace
according to thy word for mine eyes have
seen thy salvation some important words
here this word depart is an interesting
word it means to release a slave or to
release a prisoner a servant
it means to loosen a ship and set sail
it means to take down a tent like a
soldier and move on to a other ground it
means to unyoke a beast of burden at the
end of the day and let that beast have
some rest and some food now here comes
simeon and he says lord i am your
servant i am your slave i've been
serving you now you can set me free
i am on the ship that's taking off now
i'm going to set sail on the sea of
eternity i'm coming to glory father
i'm taking down this tent this whole
body of mine i'm going to move to higher ground
ground
you're going to take the yoke off of this
this
servant off of this beast of burden and
you're going to set me free it's a
beautiful picture isn't it it's similar
to the word that paul used when he wrote
to timothy the time of my departure is
at hand
departure to set sail to take down the
tent to release the prisoner to unyoke
the beast of burden what a beautiful
picture of death
you see death for the christian is not
something to fear
when we come to that time when we're
going to die
it's just like the releasing of a
prisoner into the freedom of god's
presence well it's a salvation him i
have seen your salvation
thou shalt call his name jesus for he
shall save his people from their sins
one translator translates verse 30 for
my eyes have seen thy saving gift we
think a great deal about gifts don't we
well the greatest gift of all is the
lord jesus but notice in verses 31 and
32 it's a missionary hymn
simeon really is the first missionary
preacher in the gospels next to the
angels i suppose
this salvation which thou has prepared
before the face of all people what a
strange thing for a jew to say all people
people
a light to lighten the gentiles because
they were in the darkness and the glory
of thy people israel you see the glory
of israel was pretty much faded by then
there was no glory in the temple
they had no king they really had no
spiritual priesthood there was not much
glory in israel in fact the glory had
departed hadn't it
back in the book of ezekiel in the first
nine or ten chapters the prophet
describes how the glory of god left the temple
temple
before the temple was destroyed
and so there was no glory and then the
angels showed up and they said glory to
god in the highest and on earth peace
good will toward men the glory of the
lord shone round about the angel and the
shepherds there out in those bethlehem
fields so god's glory came back
and the word was made flesh wrote john
and dwelt among us tabernacled among us
and we beheld his glory
the glory as of the only begotten of the
father full of grace and truth it's a
missionary hymn
simeon is saying this little baby is not
just for the glory of israel
this baby is going to bring light to the
gentiles and of course you recall when
paul went out on his missionary journeys
this is exactly what happened god told
him he was going to be a light to the
gentiles and that he was to carry the light
light
of the gospel to the darkened corners of
the world
now let's look at this hymn
there's a great deal of music written
about the birth of our lord jesus
but let's remember number one we need to worship
worship
today we need to worship just bless god
for the gift that he has given
worship is something that's missing in
our churches today we have a good deal
of entertainment a good deal of activity
but oh just to pause and worship god
simeon did simeon stood there in the
temple with this baby in his arms and he
lifted his heart to god
in praise and adoration it is a worship
hymn the birth of jesus means worship
it's also a salvation hymn the birth of
jesus means salvation
again let me say this i trust you can
say my eyes have seen thy salvation
by faith you have seen the lord jesus
christ in his word
and you have trusted him
yes the birth of jesus means salvation
there is no other name under heaven
given among men whereby we must be saved
and the birth of jesus means carrying
the good news to the whole world
thou has prepared before the face of all
people i cannot conceive of a christian
i cannot conceive of a church not having
a burden to reach the whole world oh i
hear about them and i preached in some
but i can't understand how a church
could hold the gospel to itself oh may
the lord help us to have the same kind
of faith and joy that simeon had
when he met the lord jesus christ
gracious father thank you for the
meaning of the birth of our savior that
there is salvation for all who will
believe help us to share this good
message this good news with the whole world
world
i pray in jesus name amen
thank you for listening to back to the bible

god bless you [Music]
