Los Angeles Dodgers star Show Otani
celebrated his dog decoys second
birthday by presenting him with a custom
Most Valuable Dog plaque. He shared the
event on social media and fans loved how
he showed affection for his furry
friend. In Oklahoma City, 11-year-old
Mandy Egleston is hailed as a hero after
her quick thinking saved her family from
a house fire caused by a lightning
strike. Her prompt actions ensured
everyone's safety, demonstrating courage
and presence of mind beyond her years.
And finally, on May 22nd, the Port of
Galveastston will commemorate National
Maritime Day with a public event at Pier
21, marking the start of the port's
bicesentennial year. The celebration
will feature a ceremony with speakers,
performances, vessel tours, and
information booths highlighting maritime
career opportunities.
So, if you're in Galveastston, Texas,
lots of fun coming up on uh May 22nd.
All right, we'll get back to that story
in a minute. Let's go to the first
story. Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles,
California. They're professional
baseball team. Uh well, the the Dodgers,
uh one of the teams in California. Uh
great team and one of their star players
is Shi Otani. He's an amazing athlete
and uh I don't know how many years he's
been there. I don't follow baseball
much, but he's a really cool guy. Very
funny guy actually. He's very funny. Um
he's a baseball star. And he has a dog
and his dog's name is Decoy. H
interesting name. D E C O Y. Decoy. And
the dog recently celebrated its second
birthday. So, my dog too celebrated his
second birthday in uh I think it was
August or September. I don't even know.
Uh he's two. He's a German Shepherd.
He's huge. He's crazy. We love him. But
uh uh I did not give him a gift on his
birthday. Are you supposed
to show Otani did? Los Angeles Dodgers
star Shoi Otani celebrated his dog
Decoys second birthday by presenting him
by giving him a custom most valuable dog
plaque. You've heard of
MVP, most valuable player, right? If
you're a an athlete on a team, uh maybe
you've received the MVP award even at
your company. Maybe you're a salesperson
and you had the biggest sales of the
month. Then you would be the most
valuable salesperson, the
MVs, I guess in that case. Well, he made
his dog a plaque. P L A Q U E. Do you
know what a plaque is? It's just
something that you hang on the wall.
It's it's usually wood or brass and it's
it's an award, you know,
congratulations, you are the most
valuable dog in the world, something
like that. That's the idea. So, he gave
his dog a custom. Custom means, you
know, made especially for decoy, a
custom plaque. A that's so sweet. And of
course, he shared the event, the
birthday on social media. I don't know
where. Was it Tik Tok or Facebook or X?
I have no idea where. I I don't follow
Shoi Otani. I'm sure it's easy to find
him. And fans loved how he showed
affection, how he showed love for his
furry
friend. Oh, I love that sentence. Fans
loved how he showed affection for his
furry friend. All those Fs and V's. Fans
F loved V. how he showed affection. F4
for F. His furry F friend. F. Good
sentence. If Fs are a problem for you,
practice that. Fans loved how he showed
affection for his furry friend. Yeah, I
like that sentence. Uh, very nice story.
Uh, once again, I have one dog. His name
is Moose. Uh, he'll be three years old
this August, I believe. Should I get him
a gift? Huh? I have three cats. Two of
the cats will be three years old in
August. Also, uh the other cat, Minty,
oh my goodness, her birthday is coming
up. Yeah, her birthday, I think, is
going to be in in this month. Oh my god.
So, how old is she? Minty. She's old.
Minty
is 13 years old. I think she may be 14
years old. I'll have to check her
paperwork. That's very old for a cat.
And she is old. Yeah. Um, she's strong.
Minty, my cat, hates everyone except me.
I'm serious. She hates everyone except
me. Yeah. But anyway, wow. I guess I
should get Minty a gift, right? Do I
have to really? Do I have to give gifts
to my pets? They don't know it's their
birthday. H. Anyway, uh the second story
is amazing. In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
City, of course, is in the state of
Oklahoma, one of America's 50 states,
11-year-old Mandy Egleston, she's 11
years old, is hailed, h a
l is considered, everyone calls her
something. What? Is hailed as a hero. A
hero. Why? after her quick thinking
saved her family from a house fire
caused by a lightning
strike. Whoa, that is scary. You know
lightning, right? Lightning, thunder.
Oh, yeah. Scary stuff. But lightning of
course can cause fires, right? Hit a
tree, cause a forest fire. In this case,
it caused a house fire. And Mandy, who's
only 11, she's like, "Oh, we got a fire.
I have to wake up mom and dad and I
don't know who. I I didn't read the full
story, but got her own family and
probably the dog and cat outside the
house so that nobody was injured. Called
the fire department. 911. Fire
department
coming." Family's going crazy. Mandy is
cool. Mandy is calm. 11 years old.
That's
incredible. Her prompt actions, her
quick actions ensured everyone's safety.
Because of her and her quick thinking,
everyone is
safe. And it shows, it demonstrates
courage. She was so brave, right?
Courage. C O U R A G E. So brave for the
for an 11year-old.
But not only brave and presence of mind.
Presence. P R E S E N C E. Presence of
mind. What that means is she was calm
and thinking
clearly in an emergency
situation. Can you do that? Do you do
that?
So, I have a uh a couple instances
uh at my house where uh I was able to
have presence of mind and uh
avoid disaster, a serious problem. Uh
and my wife and my children at the time
were not as
uh focused. We had a a fire actually
started in my office and um we saw this
because my office door was closed and we
saw a light. The dog was barking, right?
So moose Moose was barking and it was
strange for him to bark and I saw
through the curtain of my office window
there was a light that was like bright
and then not bright. Bright and then not
bright. I'm like what the heck? I opened
my office door. There was a fire that
had just started and the fire was uh on
a chair and it was just getting to a
curtain. And if it had gotten to that
curtain completely, oh my god, it would
have been a disaster. But fortunately,
uh I had presence of mind and I
immediately got a fire extinguisher and
poof put out the
fire. Yeah, that was very scary. That
was uh two years ago. I think that was
two years ago. Very scary. House fires
just any any serious incident is scary.
So I hope that you never experience
anything. But if you know you do see
something that requires presence of mind
and courage, I hope you are the hero.
You're my hero. So an 11year-old girl.
Incredible. Outstanding. Beautiful
story. I love it. And then finally,
Galveastston. The port of Galveastston.
So Texas is one of America's 50 states.
And Galveastston is a city in Texas on
the Gulf of Mexico. Is it Gulf of Mexico
or Gulf of America? By the way, I know I
have listeners in Central America, uh,
Mexico and and other countries in that
area. Um, obviously Gulf of Mexico is
what we grew up with. It's what we know.
And now Trump wants to change it to Gulf
of
America. So I'm wondering uh does that
anger you? Is that okay for you? I
understand, you know, when Trump says
America, he's probably just thinking the
USA. Um but
geographically, all the
countries in the Gulf of Mexico or
bordering the Gulf of Mexico are part of
America, right?
North America, Central America, South
America. So it it
it geographically it is the Gulf
of
America, but again it's like Mexico has
so much property on it,
right? So I'm I'm just curious,
especially people in Mexico, what do you
think about that? Yeah, I know it's a
controversial issue. For me, I I still
say Gulf of Mexico. It's in my like
Pluto is a planet. Now science says
Pluto is not a planet. Whatever. I still
think of it as a planet. The Gulf of
Mexico. It's the Gulf of Mexico to me.
Even though Trump says, "No, no, it's
the Gulf of America." Okay, whatever.
It's Gulf of
Mexico. Even on the internet when I when
I search something on Chat GPT, I Google
it. Even though I'm not using Google, I
Google it. Am I dumb?
Anyway, uh Galveistston, Texas. It's on
the Gulf of Mexico. On May 22nd, the
city, the city of Galveistston uh will
commemorate National Maritime Day. Uh so
May 22nd is National Maritime Day which
means uh it's shipping day, sea business
day, shipping, fishing, you know, I
guess military, navy, national maritime
day that is May 22nd with a public event
at Pier 21. So pier 21 is a specific
location marking the start of the port's
bicesentennial year. Ah,
bicentennial 200th birthday.
Congratulations. So, Galveastston,
Texas, their port, P O RT, where ships
go, uh, is celebrating its 200th
birthday on May 22nd, and it's also
National Maritime Day. So, they're
having a celebration. The celebration
will feature a ceremony of speakers.
That sounds boring. Performances, that
could be cool. Vessel tours. Ooh, that
sounds fun. Vessel V E S S E L Tours.
You know, T O U R S. Ooh, that means you
get to go on ships. That sounds cool.
Maybe military ships and shipping ships
and fishing ships. Maybe they have some
ship shipping ships. Shipping ships that
you can
see. What? And not only that,
information booths highlighting maritime
career opportunities. Would you like to
work at sea? I know some of you do. I
have uh DDM VIP members that are uh seaf
farers. They work on boats on big ships
traveling the world. How cool is that?
Would you like to do that? Yeah. Well,
if you would and you're in America, head
on down to Galveastston on May 22nd and
see what kind of job opportunities there
are. My understanding is the pay is very
good. So, there you go. All right. To
celebrate this, we've got some uh cool
songs. Uh and it they're all kind of
going back to the dog and even the
daughter, you know, the dog decoy. This
is just love. If you love your pet, you
really love your pet. Mandy Egleston,
the hero of her family. Can you imagine
how much they love her? Yeah. So, I got
a couple love songs. They're they're
kind of cool, actually. They're they're
new, too. Ella Langley's You Look like
You Love Me. And uh it's a country song,
but it's actually pretty funny. And if
you're a member, you can listen to the
song and you can also get the video with
the lyrics. So, check that out. And
also, Nikki, name of the singer
featuring Phil Collins. Do you know Phil
Collins? Oh, he's my generation. And
she's got a song, you'll be in my heart.
That's coming up. But first, the news
one more
time. Los Angeles Dodgers star Show
Otani celebrated his dog decoys second
birthday by presenting him with a custom
Most Valuable Dog plaque. He shared the
event on social media, and fans loved
how he showed affection for his furry
friend. In Oklahoma City, 11-year-old

bicesentennial year. The celebration
will feature a ceremony with speakers,

Where education and entertainment come
together. Let's master English. Do
it. How you doing everybody? This is
Country Shane and I'm bringing you the
facts.
Hey, hey, hey. Country Shane here
talking about lightning. Oh boy.
Globally in the world, lightning strikes
about 8 million times per day. That's
over 100 strikes of lightning per
second. That's crazy. And do you know
the expression, the saying, lightning
never strikes the same place
twice? Well, that's not true. In fact,
the Empire State Building in New York
City is struck 20 to 25 times per year,
so be
careful. Thank you, Country Shane. Wow.
100 strikes per second. That sounds
crazy. That's a lot of lightning every
second. But 100 strikes right now.
Another 100 strikes. Another 100
strikes. Another That's crazy. Oh, by
the way, I found this out, too. I was
talking with Country Shane and he's so
smart. Um, he said it's not the
rubber that saves you when you're in
your car during a lightning storm.
Right? You've heard that if you're if
there's a lightning storm outside, uh,
just stay in your car, right? It's safer
in your car. And everybody thinks it's
because of the the rubber tires, right?
But it's not the rubber. It's the metal
shell. It's the metal car that's what
protects you. So when you're in your
car, don't be touching the car frame.
Don't be touching the metal. Okay?
That's what's saving your life. So you
don't want to touch it. Now, we're
talking about lightning. Of course,
lightning strikes. Uh thunder is heard
and well, I'm sorry. We got to go to
AC/DC. Thunder
Struck. Simple tips for mastering
English. Today we're going to talk about
the word get. Get t. And like I say,
when it comes to daily English, get is
one of those verbs that you really need
to focus on. And if you're in DDM VIP,
that's exactly what we do. Get is so
universally used. But today I'm going to
show you four usages of the word get.
And these are very common. So get can
mean
obtain. OB t a i n. Get can also mean
become. Get can mean
understand. Get can mean
arrive. So I'll give you some sentences.
So get meaning obtain. I need to get a
new phone. I
don't become it's getting cold outside.
It's true for me. Last couple days have
been very warm. 25 26° C, but today 13,
tomorrow 8. It's very cold. It's getting
cold
outside. Understand? I didn't get the
joke. I didn't understand the joke. and
arrive. What time did you get home? What
time did you arrive home? You guys, I
really want you to practice using get in
different situations, in different
sentences. It will help you. And pay
attention to when Americans use the word
get. Stop for a second and try and
understand exactly what does get mean
because it can have a lot of possible
meanings. I'll give you one more. to get
away. to get away. It's a phrasal verb.
It means
escape. And I've got an escape song for
you. Fastball the way on the Let's
Master English
[Music]
podcast. This week's weekly speaking
challenge. Last week we had a time I
helped someone. Let's listen to Eva.
Once I joined a group of children
looking ball in high grass. I felt very
pleased when I saw joy in their eyes
when I found it. That's really sweet.
Uh, helping children looking for a ball
in high grass and she found it and the
kids are so happy. That's cool. I love
that. What about you? Did you help
someone? What did you do? How did it
make you feel? That was the challenge.
And we're going to listen to Hajime,
too. Hajime found a prepaid golf card at
the golf range and he turned it in
because he's a good guy. Hajime, take it
away. I found a prepaid card for renting
golf balls and someone left behind it.
So I honestly turned it in and uh and uh
later the the the owner came up to me
and thank you and I said uh it's nothing
and now we became we become the good
friend. Go
party. It's good. Thanks to everybody
who sent in their recordings. I loved
them all. Uh, this week's theme, my
favorite meal. Uh, we can always talk
about food. I want you to share a short
story about your favorite meal. Not a
story, three sentences. Number one, what
is the meal? Why do you like it? And is
there a special memory associated with
it? Sometimes our foods have a clear
memory like mom used to make this in the
summer or when I was sick, grandmother
used to make this, you know, something
like that. So, three sentences, keep it
short, 10 seconds to 20 seconds is
enough. What is the meal? Your favorite
meal. Why do you like it? And is there a
special memory associated with it? Uh,
so for me, I'll just make an example.
Let's see. My favorite meal is sushi. I
love the fresh taste and the variety. It
reminds me of my trips to Japan. That's
all it takes. If you're a member, record
your answer and post it in our school
community. Let's share our delicious
stories. Uh, I should have said chicken,
not sushi, because we got a couple songs
coming up. Uh, the trashmen, surfing
bird, and ride on time, tatso, tatsuro,
yamashita, I guess. So, yeah, I should
have said Japanese chicken. That would
have been perfect. Enjoy.
[Music]
It is May 19th, the 139th day of the
year. There are 226 days left in
2025. Upcoming dates that we need to

Bitcoin. I bought it a long time ago. I
still have it. So, yeah, I'm happy. Oh,

$600, something like that. So, yeah, I'm
happy about that. May 23rd is World
Turtle Day. Nice. Nice. Turtles. T U R T

doing? You know, you owe me money. I
don't have a I have a brother-in-law. Do
I have to call my brother-in-law? No,
no, no. It's just brothers. Brothers.
And May 25th is National Wine Day. Do
you like wine? I'm not much of a wine
drinker. I can drink it, but I'm not
much of a wine drinker. Uh if you drink
wine, you get a little crazy. Uh that's
my experience. And speaking of crazy, we
got a pretty funny song. It's 303 with
Don't Trust Me.
Is it your birthday, anniversary,
something else special happening? Yeah,
let us know. Let us know. Especially if
you're a member, it's really easy to let

songwriter, 84 years old on May 24th.
Same age as my dad. Incredible. Wait,

'9s kid, you should know Mr. T from the
A Team All-Star Wrestling. Mr. T was
great. He's still great. Uh, Mr. is an
actor and Mike Myers is an actor. But
did you know both of these men sing? Oh,
well, you're going to find out if you're
a member. You're going to find out cuz
we got Mr. T with Treat Your Mother

successoriented, they're very positive,
they work hard, and that gives me
energy. That's that's an incredible
thing. It makes me feel like uh we're
kind of a magnet. M A G NE T. We attract
each other and that's a really important
thing. And our closing song is Magnet
Part Two by a singer called Able Heart
and full of positive energy.
So enjoy the song and together let's
master English.
