1:47 Los Angeles Dodgers star Show Otani
1:51 celebrated his dog decoys second
1:54 birthday by presenting him with a custom
1:57 Most Valuable Dog plaque. He shared the
2:00 event on social media and fans loved how
2:03 he showed affection for his furry
2:05 friend. In Oklahoma City, 11-year-old
2:09 Mandy Egleston is hailed as a hero after
2:12 her quick thinking saved her family from
2:15 a house fire caused by a lightning
2:18 strike. Her prompt actions ensured
2:20 everyone's safety, demonstrating courage
2:23 and presence of mind beyond her years.
2:28 And finally, on May 22nd, the Port of
2:31 Galveastston will commemorate National
2:33 Maritime Day with a public event at Pier
2:37 21, marking the start of the port's
2:40 bicesentennial year. The celebration
2:43 will feature a ceremony with speakers,
2:45 performances, vessel tours, and
2:48 information booths highlighting maritime
2:51 career opportunities.
2:54 So, if you're in Galveastston, Texas,
2:57 lots of fun coming up on uh May 22nd.
3:01 All right, we'll get back to that story
3:02 in a minute. Let's go to the first
3:04 story. Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles,
3:07 California. They're professional
3:09 baseball team. Uh well, the the Dodgers,
3:12 uh one of the teams in California. Uh
3:15 great team and one of their star players
3:17 is Shi Otani. He's an amazing athlete
3:22 and uh I don't know how many years he's
3:24 been there. I don't follow baseball
3:26 much, but he's a really cool guy. Very
3:28 funny guy actually. He's very funny. Um
3:31 he's a baseball star. And he has a dog
3:35 and his dog's name is Decoy. H
3:39 interesting name. D E C O Y. Decoy. And
3:42 the dog recently celebrated its second
3:45 birthday. So, my dog too celebrated his
3:48 second birthday in uh I think it was
3:50 August or September. I don't even know.
3:52 Uh he's two. He's a German Shepherd.
3:54 He's huge. He's crazy. We love him. But
3:57 uh uh I did not give him a gift on his
4:01 birthday. Are you supposed
4:03 to show Otani did? Los Angeles Dodgers
4:08 star Shoi Otani celebrated his dog
4:11 Decoys second birthday by presenting him
4:15 by giving him a custom most valuable dog
4:22 plaque. You've heard of
4:25 MVP, most valuable player, right? If
4:29 you're a an athlete on a team, uh maybe
4:32 you've received the MVP award even at
4:37 your company. Maybe you're a salesperson
4:39 and you had the biggest sales of the
4:42 month. Then you would be the most
4:44 valuable salesperson, the
4:47 MVs, I guess in that case. Well, he made
4:50 his dog a plaque. P L A Q U E. Do you
4:54 know what a plaque is? It's just
4:56 something that you hang on the wall.
4:57 It's it's usually wood or brass and it's
5:00 it's an award, you know,
5:02 congratulations, you are the most
5:03 valuable dog in the world, something
5:07 like that. That's the idea. So, he gave
5:09 his dog a custom. Custom means, you
5:12 know, made especially for decoy, a
5:15 custom plaque. A that's so sweet. And of
5:19 course, he shared the event, the
5:22 birthday on social media. I don't know
5:25 where. Was it Tik Tok or Facebook or X?
5:28 I have no idea where. I I don't follow
5:30 Shoi Otani. I'm sure it's easy to find
5:32 him. And fans loved how he showed
5:37 affection, how he showed love for his
5:40 furry
5:42 friend. Oh, I love that sentence. Fans
5:46 loved how he showed affection for his
5:48 furry friend. All those Fs and V's. Fans
5:53 F loved V. how he showed affection. F4
5:57 for F. His furry F friend. F. Good
6:00 sentence. If Fs are a problem for you,
6:03 practice that. Fans loved how he showed
6:05 affection for his furry friend. Yeah, I
6:08 like that sentence. Uh, very nice story.
6:11 Uh, once again, I have one dog. His name
6:13 is Moose. Uh, he'll be three years old
6:16 this August, I believe. Should I get him
6:19 a gift? Huh? I have three cats. Two of
6:23 the cats will be three years old in
6:25 August. Also, uh the other cat, Minty,
6:29 oh my goodness, her birthday is coming
6:32 up. Yeah, her birthday, I think, is
6:35 going to be in in this month. Oh my god.
6:38 So, how old is she? Minty. She's old.
6:40 Minty
6:43 is 13 years old. I think she may be 14
6:47 years old. I'll have to check her
6:49 paperwork. That's very old for a cat.
6:52 And she is old. Yeah. Um, she's strong.
6:56 Minty, my cat, hates everyone except me.
7:00 I'm serious. She hates everyone except
7:03 me. Yeah. But anyway, wow. I guess I
7:07 should get Minty a gift, right? Do I
7:10 have to really? Do I have to give gifts
7:12 to my pets? They don't know it's their
7:15 birthday. H. Anyway, uh the second story
7:19 is amazing. In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
7:23 City, of course, is in the state of
7:25 Oklahoma, one of America's 50 states,
7:28 11-year-old Mandy Egleston, she's 11
7:32 years old, is hailed, h a
7:35 l is considered, everyone calls her
7:39 something. What? Is hailed as a hero. A
7:44 hero. Why? after her quick thinking
7:48 saved her family from a house fire
7:52 caused by a lightning
7:55 strike. Whoa, that is scary. You know
7:59 lightning, right? Lightning, thunder.
8:02 Oh, yeah. Scary stuff. But lightning of
8:05 course can cause fires, right? Hit a
8:08 tree, cause a forest fire. In this case,
8:12 it caused a house fire. And Mandy, who's
8:16 only 11, she's like, "Oh, we got a fire.
8:20 I have to wake up mom and dad and I
8:22 don't know who. I I didn't read the full
8:23 story, but got her own family and
8:26 probably the dog and cat outside the
8:29 house so that nobody was injured. Called
8:32 the fire department. 911. Fire
8:35 department
8:36 coming." Family's going crazy. Mandy is
8:39 cool. Mandy is calm. 11 years old.
8:43 That's
8:46 incredible. Her prompt actions, her
8:49 quick actions ensured everyone's safety.
8:52 Because of her and her quick thinking,
8:55 everyone is
8:56 safe. And it shows, it demonstrates
9:00 courage. She was so brave, right?
9:03 Courage. C O U R A G E. So brave for the
9:07 for an 11year-old.
9:10 But not only brave and presence of mind.
9:14 Presence. P R E S E N C E. Presence of
9:20 mind. What that means is she was calm
9:25 and thinking
9:27 clearly in an emergency
9:31 situation. Can you do that? Do you do
9:34 that?
9:35 So, I have a uh a couple instances
9:39 uh at my house where uh I was able to
9:43 have presence of mind and uh
9:48 avoid disaster, a serious problem. Uh
9:52 and my wife and my children at the time
9:55 were not as
9:58 uh focused. We had a a fire actually
10:01 started in my office and um we saw this
10:06 because my office door was closed and we
10:09 saw a light. The dog was barking, right?
10:12 So moose Moose was barking and it was
10:14 strange for him to bark and I saw
10:17 through the curtain of my office window
10:20 there was a light that was like bright
10:22 and then not bright. Bright and then not
10:24 bright. I'm like what the heck? I opened
10:26 my office door. There was a fire that
10:30 had just started and the fire was uh on
10:34 a chair and it was just getting to a
10:39 curtain. And if it had gotten to that
10:41 curtain completely, oh my god, it would
10:43 have been a disaster. But fortunately,
10:46 uh I had presence of mind and I
10:48 immediately got a fire extinguisher and
10:50 poof put out the
10:53 fire. Yeah, that was very scary. That
10:55 was uh two years ago. I think that was
10:57 two years ago. Very scary. House fires
11:01 just any any serious incident is scary.
11:04 So I hope that you never experience
11:08 anything. But if you know you do see
11:12 something that requires presence of mind
11:14 and courage, I hope you are the hero.
11:19 You're my hero. So an 11year-old girl.
11:22 Incredible. Outstanding. Beautiful
11:24 story. I love it. And then finally,
11:27 Galveastston. The port of Galveastston.
11:29 So Texas is one of America's 50 states.
11:32 And Galveastston is a city in Texas on
11:35 the Gulf of Mexico. Is it Gulf of Mexico
11:39 or Gulf of America? By the way, I know I
11:42 have listeners in Central America, uh,
11:45 Mexico and and other countries in that
11:48 area. Um, obviously Gulf of Mexico is
11:52 what we grew up with. It's what we know.
11:54 And now Trump wants to change it to Gulf
11:56 of
11:56 America. So I'm wondering uh does that
12:00 anger you? Is that okay for you? I
12:03 understand, you know, when Trump says
12:05 America, he's probably just thinking the
12:08 USA. Um but
12:11 geographically, all the
12:13 countries in the Gulf of Mexico or
12:16 bordering the Gulf of Mexico are part of
12:18 America, right?
12:21 North America, Central America, South
12:23 America. So it it
12:25 it geographically it is the Gulf
12:29 of
12:31 America, but again it's like Mexico has
12:36 so much property on it,
12:39 right? So I'm I'm just curious,
12:41 especially people in Mexico, what do you
12:43 think about that? Yeah, I know it's a
12:46 controversial issue. For me, I I still
12:49 say Gulf of Mexico. It's in my like
12:51 Pluto is a planet. Now science says
12:54 Pluto is not a planet. Whatever. I still
12:58 think of it as a planet. The Gulf of
13:00 Mexico. It's the Gulf of Mexico to me.
13:02 Even though Trump says, "No, no, it's
13:03 the Gulf of America." Okay, whatever.
13:06 It's Gulf of
13:07 Mexico. Even on the internet when I when
13:10 I search something on Chat GPT, I Google
13:13 it. Even though I'm not using Google, I
13:16 Google it. Am I dumb?
13:20 Anyway, uh Galveistston, Texas. It's on
13:23 the Gulf of Mexico. On May 22nd, the
13:27 city, the city of Galveistston uh will
13:29 commemorate National Maritime Day. Uh so
13:33 May 22nd is National Maritime Day which
13:36 means uh it's shipping day, sea business
13:41 day, shipping, fishing, you know, I
13:45 guess military, navy, national maritime
13:47 day that is May 22nd with a public event
13:50 at Pier 21. So pier 21 is a specific
13:54 location marking the start of the port's
13:57 bicesentennial year. Ah,
14:00 bicentennial 200th birthday.
14:04 Congratulations. So, Galveastston,
14:06 Texas, their port, P O RT, where ships
14:10 go, uh, is celebrating its 200th
14:13 birthday on May 22nd, and it's also
14:16 National Maritime Day. So, they're
14:18 having a celebration. The celebration
14:21 will feature a ceremony of speakers.
14:23 That sounds boring. Performances, that
14:26 could be cool. Vessel tours. Ooh, that
14:30 sounds fun. Vessel V E S S E L Tours.
14:35 You know, T O U R S. Ooh, that means you
14:38 get to go on ships. That sounds cool.
14:40 Maybe military ships and shipping ships
14:44 and fishing ships. Maybe they have some
14:47 ship shipping ships. Shipping ships that
14:49 you can
14:50 see. What? And not only that,
14:53 information booths highlighting maritime
14:56 career opportunities. Would you like to
14:59 work at sea? I know some of you do. I
15:02 have uh DDM VIP members that are uh seaf
15:06 farers. They work on boats on big ships
15:10 traveling the world. How cool is that?
15:12 Would you like to do that? Yeah. Well,
15:15 if you would and you're in America, head
15:18 on down to Galveastston on May 22nd and
15:21 see what kind of job opportunities there
15:23 are. My understanding is the pay is very
15:26 good. So, there you go. All right. To
15:29 celebrate this, we've got some uh cool
15:32 songs. Uh and it they're all kind of
15:35 going back to the dog and even the
15:37 daughter, you know, the dog decoy. This
15:39 is just love. If you love your pet, you
15:41 really love your pet. Mandy Egleston,
15:43 the hero of her family. Can you imagine
15:45 how much they love her? Yeah. So, I got
15:48 a couple love songs. They're they're
15:49 kind of cool, actually. They're they're
15:51 new, too. Ella Langley's You Look like
15:54 You Love Me. And uh it's a country song,
15:56 but it's actually pretty funny. And if
15:59 you're a member, you can listen to the
16:00 song and you can also get the video with
16:03 the lyrics. So, check that out. And
16:05 also, Nikki, name of the singer
16:07 featuring Phil Collins. Do you know Phil
16:10 Collins? Oh, he's my generation. And
16:13 she's got a song, you'll be in my heart.
16:15 That's coming up. But first, the news
16:18 one more
16:19 time. Los Angeles Dodgers star Show
16:22 Otani celebrated his dog decoys second
16:25 birthday by presenting him with a custom
16:29 Most Valuable Dog plaque. He shared the
16:33 event on social media, and fans loved
16:36 how he showed affection for his furry
16:38 friend. In Oklahoma City, 11-year-old
16:41 Mandy Egleston is hailed as a hero after
16:44 her quick thinking saved her family from
16:47 a houseire caused by a lightning strike.
16:51 Her prompt actions ensured everyone's
16:53 safety, demonstrating courage and
16:56 presence of mind beyond her years.
17:00 And finally, on May 22nd, the Port of
17:04 Galveastston will commemorate National
17:06 Maritime Day with a public event at Pier
17:09 21, marking the start of the port's
17:14 bicesentennial year. The celebration
17:17 will feature a ceremony with speakers,
17:20 performances, vessel tours, and
17:23 information booths highlighting maritime
17:26 career opportunities.
17:29 Where education and entertainment come
17:31 together. Let's master English. Do
17:38 it. How you doing everybody? This is
17:41 Country Shane and I'm bringing you the
17:44 facts.
17:46 Hey, hey, hey. Country Shane here
17:48 talking about lightning. Oh boy.
17:51 Globally in the world, lightning strikes
17:54 about 8 million times per day. That's
17:59 over 100 strikes of lightning per
18:04 second. That's crazy. And do you know
18:08 the expression, the saying, lightning
18:11 never strikes the same place
18:14 twice? Well, that's not true. In fact,
18:17 the Empire State Building in New York
18:20 City is struck 20 to 25 times per year,
18:24 so be
18:28 careful. Thank you, Country Shane. Wow.
18:31 100 strikes per second. That sounds
18:35 crazy. That's a lot of lightning every
18:37 second. But 100 strikes right now.
18:39 Another 100 strikes. Another 100
18:40 strikes. Another That's crazy. Oh, by
18:43 the way, I found this out, too. I was
18:45 talking with Country Shane and he's so
18:46 smart. Um, he said it's not the
18:50 rubber that saves you when you're in
18:53 your car during a lightning storm.
18:55 Right? You've heard that if you're if
18:56 there's a lightning storm outside, uh,
18:59 just stay in your car, right? It's safer
19:01 in your car. And everybody thinks it's
19:03 because of the the rubber tires, right?
19:06 But it's not the rubber. It's the metal
19:08 shell. It's the metal car that's what
19:10 protects you. So when you're in your
19:12 car, don't be touching the car frame.
19:16 Don't be touching the metal. Okay?
19:18 That's what's saving your life. So you
19:20 don't want to touch it. Now, we're
19:22 talking about lightning. Of course,
19:24 lightning strikes. Uh thunder is heard
19:28 and well, I'm sorry. We got to go to
19:30 AC/DC. Thunder
19:34 Struck. Simple tips for mastering
19:37 English. Today we're going to talk about
19:39 the word get. Get t. And like I say,
19:43 when it comes to daily English, get is
19:46 one of those verbs that you really need
19:49 to focus on. And if you're in DDM VIP,
19:52 that's exactly what we do. Get is so
19:56 universally used. But today I'm going to
19:59 show you four usages of the word get.
20:03 And these are very common. So get can
20:06 mean
20:08 obtain. OB t a i n. Get can also mean
20:14 become. Get can mean
20:16 understand. Get can mean
20:20 arrive. So I'll give you some sentences.
20:22 So get meaning obtain. I need to get a
20:26 new phone. I
20:29 don't become it's getting cold outside.
20:34 It's true for me. Last couple days have
20:36 been very warm. 25 26° C, but today 13,
20:41 tomorrow 8. It's very cold. It's getting
20:45 cold
20:46 outside. Understand? I didn't get the
20:50 joke. I didn't understand the joke. and
20:54 arrive. What time did you get home? What
20:58 time did you arrive home? You guys, I
21:02 really want you to practice using get in
21:04 different situations, in different
21:06 sentences. It will help you. And pay
21:09 attention to when Americans use the word
21:12 get. Stop for a second and try and
21:14 understand exactly what does get mean
21:18 because it can have a lot of possible
21:19 meanings. I'll give you one more. to get
21:22 away. to get away. It's a phrasal verb.
21:26 It means
21:27 escape. And I've got an escape song for
21:31 you. Fastball the way on the Let's
21:35 Master English
21:36 [Music]
21:42 podcast. This week's weekly speaking
21:45 challenge. Last week we had a time I
21:49 helped someone. Let's listen to Eva.
21:54 Once I joined a group of children
21:59 looking ball in high grass. I felt very
22:04 pleased when I saw joy in their eyes
22:08 when I found it. That's really sweet.
22:11 Uh, helping children looking for a ball
22:15 in high grass and she found it and the
22:17 kids are so happy. That's cool. I love
22:19 that. What about you? Did you help
22:21 someone? What did you do? How did it
22:23 make you feel? That was the challenge.
22:25 And we're going to listen to Hajime,
22:26 too. Hajime found a prepaid golf card at
22:31 the golf range and he turned it in
22:34 because he's a good guy. Hajime, take it
22:36 away. I found a prepaid card for renting
22:40 golf balls and someone left behind it.
22:42 So I honestly turned it in and uh and uh
22:49 later the the the owner came up to me
22:51 and thank you and I said uh it's nothing
22:55 and now we became we become the good
22:59 friend. Go
23:01 party. It's good. Thanks to everybody
23:03 who sent in their recordings. I loved
23:05 them all. Uh, this week's theme, my
23:08 favorite meal. Uh, we can always talk
23:11 about food. I want you to share a short
23:13 story about your favorite meal. Not a
23:15 story, three sentences. Number one, what
23:17 is the meal? Why do you like it? And is
23:21 there a special memory associated with
23:25 it? Sometimes our foods have a clear
23:28 memory like mom used to make this in the
23:31 summer or when I was sick, grandmother
23:33 used to make this, you know, something
23:34 like that. So, three sentences, keep it
23:38 short, 10 seconds to 20 seconds is
23:40 enough. What is the meal? Your favorite
23:42 meal. Why do you like it? And is there a
23:46 special memory associated with it? Uh,
23:48 so for me, I'll just make an example.
23:51 Let's see. My favorite meal is sushi. I
23:54 love the fresh taste and the variety. It
23:57 reminds me of my trips to Japan. That's
24:01 all it takes. If you're a member, record
24:04 your answer and post it in our school
24:06 community. Let's share our delicious
24:09 stories. Uh, I should have said chicken,
24:12 not sushi, because we got a couple songs
