0:03 there are three ways that we can
0:07 learn we can learn by
0:09 explanation and that's the way we learn
0:13 so many things algebra and
0:17 cooking mechanical things we learn by
0:20 explanation it's also possible to learn
0:23 by experience now some things are best
0:25 learned by experience if you're going to
0:28 learn how to swim or play tennis get out
0:31 and do it you don't on how to swim by
0:34 watching movies or listening to lectures
0:35 there some things you should never learn by
0:37 by
0:40 experience it's too bad that uh some
0:43 young people have the idea that we older
0:45 ones don't know what we're talking about
0:48 and so they have to learn the hard way
0:50 and so you can learn by explanation or
0:52 you can learn by
0:55 experience or you can learn by
0:57 example and we're going to consider
1:01 tonight Jonah as example of someone who
1:04 had difficulty with the will of God
1:07 during these Sunday evenings we're
1:09 answering some crucial questions about
1:12 the will of God we're seeking to go
1:13 beneath the
1:17 surface and discover a little bit
1:20 more go a little bit deeper in this
1:22 matter of knowing and understanding the
1:26 will of God now Jonah is the example the
1:30 classic example of a man who wrestled
1:32 with the will of God and sought to
1:34 obstruct the will of
1:36 God which raises the interesting
1:39 question how much can you and I as
1:42 Believers get in God's
1:46 way I think that the Book of Jonah
1:48 presents to us and Jonah himself
1:51 presents to us three basic
1:54 lessons about the will of
1:57 God first of all Jonah teaches us a
2:01 lesson in discovering the will of of
2:03 God discovering the will of God now
2:07 you'll remember last Sunday evening I
2:08 said to you that there are three
2:11 approaches to the will of God that are
2:15 wrong I don't advise you to use them we
2:18 gave names to them for convenience sake
2:21 the mystical approach this is the
2:25 approach that says empty your mind don't
2:28 consider any facts don't investigate
2:32 anything just to your mind and wait upon
2:35 God and you'll get a feeling and you'll
2:36 you'll know what you're supposed to do
2:38 this is the mystical
2:41 approach and if you go by your feelings
2:43 you'll know the will of God the second
2:47 wrong approach we call the mechanical
2:50 approach this says that the will of God
2:51 is a
2:53 machine and you're a part of a machine
2:55 and if anything goes wrong if you
2:57 disobey him you're done for the machine
2:59 comes to a stop you can't trade it in
3:01 for a new new model you can't repair it you're
3:02 you're
3:04 through the third approach we call the
3:07 dictatorial approach this is the
3:10 approach that says you are on the throne
3:13 of your life and to really know God's
3:15 will you get off of the throne and Jesus
3:18 gets on the throne and from then on he
3:21 rules everything and I said that was
3:23 wrong because you cannot get off the
3:25 throne and stay off the throne and still
3:27 be a
3:31 person Romans 5 say 17 doesn't say that
3:35 Christ Reigns instead of us it says we
3:41 reign in life through one Jesus Christ
3:43 Paul did not say Christ does all things
3:48 instead of me Christ does all things in
3:51 spite of me Paul said I can do all
3:55 things through Christ who strengtheneth
4:00 me now in Jonah chap 1 we we have
4:02 evidence that the mystical approach doesn't
4:03 doesn't
4:06 work because in Jonah chap 1 the word of
4:10 the Lord came unto Jonah the son of amii
4:13 saying arise go to Nineveh that great
4:16 City and cry against it for their
4:20 wickedness is come up before me but
4:23 Jonah rose up to flee unto tares the
4:26 opposite direction from the presence of
4:29 the Lord now Jonah knew he couldn't run
4:32 away from God because Psalm 139 says you
4:35 can't do that to run from the presence
4:38 of the Lord means to resign a prophet
4:40 stood in the presence of the
4:44 Lord and so Jonah was saying oh God I'm
4:46 not going to go to Nineveh instead of
4:47 going to Nineveh I'm going to resign
4:49 here's my resignation I'm
4:52 through now you know the story how he
4:55 went down to japa whenever you turn away
4:57 from God's will you always go down he
5:01 went down to japa he found a ship going
5:04 to tares he paid the fair and went down
5:08 into it to go with them unto tares from
5:11 the presence of the Lord but the Lord
5:15 sent out a great wind into the sea and
5:17 there was a mighty Tempest in the sea so
5:19 that the ship was in danger of being
5:21 broken and the Mariners were afraid now
5:23 when the sailors get scared watch
5:26 out I can understand land lbers getting
5:28 scared but not Sailors the sailors were
5:30 very much afraid they started crying out
5:32 to their gods they started lightening
5:35 the ship but Jonah was gone down that's
5:37 the third time we have that
5:41 adverb Jonah was gone down into the
5:44 sides of the ship and he lay and was
5:46 fast asleep I've had people say to me oh
5:49 Pastor I've considered this decision and
5:53 I have real peace in my heart about it
5:55 here's a fellow who had
5:58 peace now Jonah was a land lobber the
6:00 the Jewish people buying and large do
6:02 not like did not like the
6:05 water the water to them was was a
6:06 dangerous place they they were they were
6:09 people who liked the land the mountains
6:12 and the ground I I I admire them for
6:15 that I'm the same way I do not like the
6:18 water here's Jonah sound asleep now he's
6:20 out of the will of God the word of the
6:23 Lord came saying go this way and Jonah
6:26 went that way and he had peace in his
6:27 heart about
6:30 it now you watch out for this mystical
6:32 approach that gives you a good feeling
6:34 any good feeling you have that's
6:39 contrary to the word of God is a bad
6:42 feeling it shows there something wrong
6:44 so the mystical approach in chapter 1
6:46 just doesn't work now let's take the
6:48 mechanical approach the mechanical
6:50 approach says oh if you make a mistake
6:52 you're done for if you if you disobey
6:54 the will of God you're
6:59 through well in Chapter 2 Jonah wakes up
7:01 and finds out he's in the innards of
7:03 this great fish they've thrown him in
7:06 the water and God prepared a great fish
7:09 and he starts to pray then Jonah prayed
7:10 too B didn't pray back in chapter one
7:13 would have been better then Jonah prayed
7:16 and Jonah confesses his sin to
7:18 God he says I will look toward your Holy
7:20 Temple that's the Old Testament version
7:23 of 1 John 1:9 when the temple was
7:25 dedicated Solomon
7:28 said if any of your children are far
7:30 away and they've sinned and they look
7:33 toward your temple hear them and forgive
7:35 them and Jonah says I'm going to look
7:36 toward the temple I'm going to look
7:38 toward God and I'm going to ask him to
7:42 forgive me and God forgave him now these
7:43 people who believe in the Machinery
7:45 approach to the will of God you're a cog
7:47 in some kind of a machine if you make a
7:49 mistake you're through have a hard time
7:52 with this because chapter 3 starts and
7:55 the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the
7:58 second time oh you can't do that Lord
8:00 can't do that the Machinery is broken
8:04 down oh really the will of God is not a
8:06 mechanical thing it's a living
8:09 thing I have said more than once from
8:11 this pulpit and it Bears repeating that
8:14 my relationship to God is not a
8:16 mechanical thing you drop in your
8:18 quarter and push a b and c and out comes
8:22 the product it's a living relationship
8:24 and just as two friends can have a falling
8:25 falling
8:29 out and be reconciled so my heavenly
8:30 father and I can have a falling out and be
8:32 be
8:35 reconciled just as some part of my body
8:38 can go wrong and I keep on living and
8:42 other parts compensate for it so in the
8:45 will of God I can disobey God and God
8:49 rules and overrules and
8:53 compensates but he doesn't quit he gave
8:56 Abraham a second chance he gave David a
8:58 second chance and a third chance and a
9:00 fourth chance
9:02 he gave Peter a second chance how many
9:03 chances have you
9:05 had now don't ever let the devil come to
9:07 you and say oh because you did this
9:10 you're through Machinery is broken down oh
9:11 oh
9:14 no that mechanical approach is dead
9:16 wrong now let's take the dictatorial
9:19 approach chapter
9:23 3 this is the one I'm the most afraid of
9:24 and when I discuss this I am not
9:27 criticizing any organization or
9:30 any any grp
9:34 group get off the throne Let Jesus on
9:36 the throne let him run your
9:39 life I maintain he can't run my life if
9:41 I'm off the
9:44 throne I have to control my hands I'm
9:47 not a robot I have to control my feet I
9:49 have to control my mind I have to
9:52 control my eyes and my tongue he won't
9:54 do it instead of me he has to do it
9:57 through me and so chapter 3 tells me
10:00 that there was a king in Nineveh and he
10:01 heard the word of God the word of God
10:04 said reent in 40 days Nineveh shall be
10:06 overthrown you know what the king did he
10:08 got off the throne and took off his robe
10:11 he put on sackcloth and
10:14 Ashes but he was still the
10:17 king the only difference was now he and
10:20 God were running the
10:22 kingdom he didn't get off the throne and
10:24 say Lord you come and sit in the
10:27 throne he got off the throne and God
10:28 said okay let's get back on and let's do
10:30 it together together that's dedication
10:33 my friends dedication doesn't mean you
10:35 try to get off the Throne of your life
10:37 you cease to exist I won't think which
10:39 isn't too hard for some Christians I
10:43 won't do the No No dedication means I
10:45 say Lord I'm getting off the throne you
10:47 get on and he gets on then when he gets
10:48 on the throne he says now come on back
10:50 up here let's sit together and let's
10:53 work this out together we re in life
10:56 through Jesus Christ Romans 5:17 the
10:58 King was still the king even though he
11:01 had humbled himself
11:04 now how do we discover the will of God
11:07 how did Jonah discover the will of God
11:10 through the word of God the word of the
11:15 Lord came unto Jonah saying arise and go
11:18 I maintain dear people that no one can
11:22 know the will of God apart from the word
11:25 of God oh you say I go by
11:26 circumstances Jonah went by
11:28 circumstances he was running away from
11:30 God there was a ship waiting for him how
11:33 about that if he'd been like some people
11:34 I know he would said isn't this
11:36 marvelous I must be in the Lord's will
11:37 there was a ship waiting going right
11:39 where I want to go now back in Jonah's
11:41 day you couldn't pick up a ship to tares
11:43 any day it wasn't like going out to
11:45 O'Hare Field and saying well there's 15
11:47 flights to New York and 22 flights to
11:49 Los Angeles if I miss the 2:00 flight
11:53 there's one at 2:30 uh-uh these ships
11:55 were uh were more like Amtrak you
11:58 weren't quite sure when they
12:00 would be
12:02 there and so Jonah is running away from
12:05 the will of God you railroad people who
12:06 forgive me Jonah is running away from
12:08 the will from the will of God and he
12:12 finds a ship waiting for him he say oh
12:14 this might it shows I'm doing the right
12:16 thing he had the money to pay for it
12:23 on you can't go just by circumstances
12:24 alone you can't go by feelings his
12:26 feelings were great he was so peaceful
12:29 he went to sleep in a storm
12:31 I know where I would have been if I were
12:32 on that
12:37 storm how did Jonah know what did God
12:39 wanted him to do the word of God told
12:42 him now you take circumstances plus
12:43 feelings plus the word of God you may
12:46 have a good combination you have
12:48 circumstances alone watch out you have
12:50 feelings alone watch out the word of God
12:52 is what guides us the word of the Lord
12:56 came a second time unto Jonah saying
12:57 arise go to Nineveh and preach the
13:00 preaching I bid you
13:02 so that Christian who spends time in the
13:04 word of God is going to know the will of
13:11 know now I want us to page through the
13:13 New Testament for a few
13:16 minutes I dare
13:19 you I dare you to get your concordance
13:22 out and find those verses that
13:26 specifically tell us the will of God can
13:28 I show you a few of them let's start in
13:30 second Corinth
13:33 Corinthians anything in my life that
13:36 disobeys any of these verses is out of
13:40 God's will 2 Corinthians 8:5 here's a
13:43 verse that tells us what God's will is
13:46 Paul's talking about the generous giving
13:49 of the churches in Macedonia 2 Corinthians
13:50 Corinthians
13:54 8:5 and this they did not as we hoped
13:58 but first gave themselves to the Lord
14:02 and to Us by the will of God you say
14:03 what's the will of God for my life to
14:06 give yourself to God and to other
14:10 people but Jonah didn't do that God said
14:12 Jonah I want to give yourself I want you
14:14 to give yourself to those ninevites oh
14:17 not on your life Lord you made a mistake
14:18 they had too many holes in the computer
14:20 card you got the wrong
14:22 fella you see he violated the word of
14:24 God not at this point
14:27 stop then why read anything further if
14:30 in my life something comes that keeps me
14:32 from giving myself to God or giving
14:36 myself to others I'm out of God's
14:41 will well let's try Galatians chapter 1 verse
14:42 verse
14:45 4 talking about our lord
14:49 Jesus who gave himself for our sins that
14:52 he might Deliver Us from this present
14:57 evil age according to the will of God
15:00 and our father anything that gets me
15:04 involved in this present evil world is
15:07 out of God's will I don't have to pray
15:15 wrong well let's try first Thessalonians
15:22 three for this is the will of God can't
15:24 get much clearer than that even the King
15:26 James can be
15:30 understood for this is the of God even
15:32 your sanctification you're being set
15:36 apart oh but Jonah got involved in this
15:39 present evil world he threw his lot in
15:41 with a bunch of pagan Sailors oh but
15:48 separated he was not set
15:51 apart that's pretty obvious anything
15:55 that takes away my position of being set
16:00 apart for God is out of God's will
16:05 you can go to Washington DC and rent the
16:08 Armory you can rent the
16:11 stadium you can't rent the White House
16:19 special well how about 1 Thessalonians
16:22 chap 5 Verse
16:26 18 in everything give thanks for this is
16:29 the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning
16:30 concerning
16:35 you the instant Jonah became critical
16:37 instead of thankful he was out of God's
16:39 will the will of the Lord came to him
16:41 saying go to Nineveh you know what Jonah
16:43 should have done should have done what
16:46 David does back in the Psalms many times
16:48 you find David saying oh Lord I don't
16:50 want to do this oh Lord I don't
16:52 understand what you're doing Jonah
16:54 should have said Lord I don't want to go
16:56 to Nineveh but you want me to go and I
16:59 should be thankful for this now help me
17:01 to have a thankful Spirit instead of a critical
17:03 critical
17:05 spirit you know what would do wonders
17:07 for our Christian lives if at the
17:09 beginning of every day we'd pray like
17:14 this oh God help me today in everything
17:17 to give thanks because the minute a
17:19 Christian ceases to be
17:22 thankful he starts to be disobedient
17:24 because it's God's will for us to give
17:39 2:15 for so it is the will of God that
17:42 with well doing you may put to silence
17:45 the ignorance of foolish man he's
17:47 talking here about witnessing verse 13
17:49 submit yourselves to every ordinance of
17:51 man for the Lord's
17:54 sake he goes on to talk about Governors
17:57 and so forth why it's the will of God
17:59 it's the will of God that by your lives
18:03 you might put to to silence the stupid
18:05 things that stupid people say Jonah
18:09 didn't do that Jonah wasn't a witness
18:12 Jonah was um an opportunity for God to lose
18:14 lose
18:17 Glory so it's the will of God that I do
18:20 well that I do good not evil Jonah
18:25 almost caused a shipload of people to
18:27 perish let me say this by way of parenthesis
18:30 parenthesis
18:32 we are prone to say the world's in a
18:36 mess because of unsaved
18:38 people the world is really in a mess
18:40 because of Christians who are out of the
18:44 will of God Abraham got out of the will
18:46 of God and brought judgment down upon
18:49 Egypt David got out of the will of God
18:51 and brought judgment down upon his
18:55 family and his Nation Jonah got out of
18:57 the will of God and brought judgment
18:59 down upon a bunch of UN save Pagan
19:03 Sailors you know why he wasn't doing
19:08 good how about 1 Timothy 2 and verse
19:19 God who will have all men to be saved
19:21 and to come unto the knowledge of the
19:26 truth oh Jonah God's will is that people
19:29 get saved go to Nineveh and win people
19:32 oh I don't want to do that now this is
19:34 the positive side who will have all men
19:37 to be saved 2 Peter 3:9 is the negative
19:40 God is not willing that any should
19:43 perish over in Matthew 18 Jesus goes so
19:46 far as to say this it is not the will of
19:48 your father that one of these little
19:51 ones perish Jonah ends with God saying
19:53 you know Jonah there's an awful lot of
19:55 little children over there in Nineveh
19:56 they can't tell their right hand from
19:58 their left hand is it God's will will
20:00 for people to be saved
20:03 yes if I am not assisting in getting
20:06 people to get S to be saved what am I
20:12 will so here are five or six Bible
20:14 verses that distinctly tell us what
20:17 God's will is and Jonah broke every one of
20:18 of
20:22 them how do we discover God's will
20:23 through God's
20:26 word just through God's word as you
20:28 saturate your mind with the word of God
20:30 as you fill your heart with the word of
20:33 God as you read it and Ponder on it and
20:35 meditate you know what happens God talks
20:38 to you it's not a mystical experience of
20:40 ignorance it's not a mechanical
20:42 experience of pushing the buttons it's a
20:46 living relationship it's Romans 122 be
20:49 transformed by the renewing of your mind
20:52 that you may prove by experience what is
20:53 that good and acceptable and perfect
20:56 will of God sometimes God just says
20:59 wait sometimes God just say says now get
21:02 ready if God's been keeping you waiting
21:06 for some time to accomplish something my
21:07 friend when it does happen watch out
21:10 it'll happen so fast it'll take your breath
21:10 breath
21:14 away Joseph waited for 13 years for his
21:17 dreams to be fulfilled but when it
21:19 happened boy did it happen in a hurry
21:21 they came to his cell and they said hey
21:22 you got to shave you got to change
21:24 clothes the king wants to see
21:27 you and from then on he was on the
21:30 throne Jonah teaches us a lesson in
21:32 discovering God's will my Christian
21:35 friend if you're ignoring or neglecting
21:39 or disobeying the written word of God
21:40 you can't know God's
21:43 will I think it's the Detroit Bible
21:45 College that has as its
21:48 motto discovering the will of God
21:51 through studying the word of God that's
21:53 a good modotto there's a second lesson
21:55 that Jonah teaches
21:58 us he teaches us a lesson about defin
22:00 ing God's
22:04 will defying God's will here's a puny
22:07 little preacher who said no
22:10 Lord God said go that way he said I'm
22:14 going this way now to what extent can we
22:21 God everything in the Book of Jonah obeys
22:22 obeys
22:25 God except
22:28 Jonah you take the inanimate word world
22:30 you take the mineral
22:33 Kingdom the waves obey God God said
22:37 waves storm stor and a storm came the
22:39 winds obeyed
22:43 God the boat obeyed God that boat could
22:46 have broken into pieces God kept
22:49 together when they cast lots to see who
22:51 was the Troublemaker the dice obeyed God
22:54 I have a friend who can control dice I
22:55 don't know how he does it he wrote a
22:56 book on it I read the book and still
22:59 don't know how he does it I've watched
23:01 him do it it's amazing but with him it's
23:03 trickery with God it's no trickery God controls
23:04 controls
23:07 dice God can control little dice God can
23:10 control winds God can control waves inanimate
23:13 inanimate
23:16 nature obeyed
23:19 him the vegetable World obeyed him in
23:22 the last chapter a gourd came up God
23:24 controlled the G
23:26 G
23:29 animal the animal kingdom OB him here's
23:31 a great fish whatever it
23:33 was Jonah could have written a
23:57 suppose here's this great fish and God
24:00 says to the fish go go swallow that man
24:11 man so the fish obeyed God the last
24:13 chapter a worm obeys God he really
24:15 bugged Jonah at this
24:18 point little worm God says worm you
24:21 right down
24:23 there get into that
24:26 gourd and the worm obeyed him a huge
24:29 fish obeys God little worm obeys God a
24:32 puny old man won't do it everything in
24:34 this book obeys God except
24:37 Jonah and Jonah had the most to lose and
24:39 the most to
24:42 gain now this is the big question can a puny
24:44 puny
24:49 man obstruct the will of
24:53 God well apparently the answer is
24:55 yes if you
24:59 mean immediately but not Al
25:04 imately of course Jonah obstructed God's
25:06 will God said go and he went the wrong
25:08 direction now how many days it took for
25:10 all this to happen we don't know he was
25:13 in the innards of the fish three days
25:15 and three nights took him a few days to
25:18 get to Nineveh but did he delay God's
25:22 program yes to some degree you and I can
25:26 defy God immediately but not ultimately
25:29 not permanently because when puny man
25:31 begins to defy the will of God you know
25:38 does he begins to
25:41 spank now God didn't spank the unsaved
25:45 men on board that ship they weren't his
25:48 children God only spanks his own
25:50 children there are times when I felt
25:52 like spanking other people's children
25:54 but I have controlled
25:56 myself I suppose there may have been
25:58 times years ago when people felt like
26:02 spanking mind but when Jonah began to
26:05 defy the will of God they're moved into
26:07 Jonah's life one of the most beautiful
26:10 things that God ever does discipline by
26:11 the way that's the whole theme of the
26:12 book of
26:14 Hebrews I don't know why it is people
26:16 get in the book of Hebrews they forget
26:18 the first five chapters they forget the
26:21 last chapters and they sit down in six
26:22 and they get themselves very
26:24 uncomfortable in chapter six like a a
26:26 Hindu sitting on a bed of nails and they
26:27 miss all the blessing of the book of Hebrews
26:29 Hebrews
26:32 Hebrews begins God has
26:34 spoken that's what happened to Jonah God
26:37 spoke to Jonah Hebrews says God has
26:39 spoken what will you do with his word
26:41 turn back to Hebrews I'm going to page
26:43 through the book of Hebrews with you I'm
26:44 not going to expound it but I'm going to
26:46 page through
26:50 it chapter 1 God has spoken and what he
26:52 is saying is more important than what
26:53 the prophet said he's this is the whole
26:56 finish he's spoken in his son his son is
26:58 greater than the prophets greater than
27:02 the the Angels now chapter 2 therefore
27:04 we ought to give the more Earnest heed
27:05 to the things which we have heard
27:08 Christians now lest at any time we
27:11 should let them
27:14 slip for if the word spoken by Angels
27:16 was steadfast how much more is the word
27:19 now spoken through his son you see God
27:21 has spoken don't start
27:25 drifting don't start drifting from God's
27:26 word say I haven't read my Bible in two
27:29 weeks you're drifting from God's word
27:31 that's the first
27:34 exhortation over in chapter 3: 7 he says
27:36 don't start doubting God's word today if
27:39 you hear his voice hard and not your
27:42 heart that's what the Jews did back at
27:45 Kadesh Baria they doubted God's word so
27:47 first you start drifting from God's word
27:50 then you start doubting God's word well
27:52 he continues to tell how important the
27:54 word of God is you get to chapter 5
27:58 verse 11 don't get dull toward God God's
28:01 word I've seen this happen Christian
28:03 gets away from the word of God he drifts
28:06 quits having his prayer time he starts
28:08 doubting the word of God then he starts
28:10 getting dull toward the word of God what
28:14 happens next well you turn over the
28:17 page chapter
28:19 10 verse
28:24 26 for if we sin
28:27 willfully after we have received the
28:28 knowledge of the truth there remaineth
28:30 no more sacrifice for sins God doesn't
28:32 have two saviors he's got one he's
28:35 talking about Christians here drifting
28:39 doubting getting dull now they are
28:41 despising the word look at it down in
28:46 verse 28 he that despised Moses law died
28:48 without mercy of how much Sor or
28:51 punishment would we today be held
28:55 accountable he says down in verse 30 the
28:58 Lord shall judge his people not the not
29:00 the not the dop addicts not the
29:03 drunkards not the prostitutes his people
29:05 he says you start drifting from the word
29:08 and doubting the word and getting dull
29:10 toward the word and despising the word
29:13 then I have to go to work on you because
29:20 12 beginning at verse 14 where he talks about
29:21 about
29:26 defying the word of God verse 25 see
29:29 that you refuse not not him that
29:31 speaketh and that's exactly what Jonah
29:35 did now when God sees I'm
29:38 drifting he exhorts me when he sees I am
29:41 doubting he deals with me when he sees
29:44 that I am getting dull he works on me
29:46 when he sees I am
29:49 getting a despiteful attitude and then I
29:51 start defying you know what he does
29:56 Hebrews 12 comes into Focus he
29:59 disciplines God will not allow his
30:02 children to become Rebels even if he has
30:08 them you say you're getting awfully hard
30:12 to listen to well look at Hebrews
30:16 12 verse 5 and ye have forgotten the
30:19 exhortation which speaketh unto you as
30:22 unto Sons not unsaved people children my
30:28 son despise not thou the chastening of
30:31 the Lord nor faint when thou art rebuked
30:33 of him here are two extreme
30:36 things God brings chastening upon us we
30:38 say well that's not important and we
30:41 despise it we have a a stuck up attitude
30:44 a hard heart toward it he said don't do
30:46 that the other extreme is just to give
30:48 up and say oh it's all over don't do
30:52 that for whom the Lord loveth he chasten
30:56 it chastening is not punishment a judge
30:59 punishes a criminal to to uphold the law
31:02 a father chastens a son to build
31:05 character and Jonah defied God he said
31:08 I'm going this way God said how far do
31:10 you think you're going to get I love you
31:13 too much I've paid too much for you to
31:17 let you become a rebel and God begins to
31:18 discipline now I don't have to preach
31:21 this because you've experienced it I
31:25 thank God whenever I thankful I did it
31:26 but I'm thankful that whenever I've
31:30 gotten out of his will he spanked me and
31:32 by the way my friends the worst kind of
31:34 spanking is not when he touches your
31:36 body it's when he touches the body of
31:45 harder now suppose a person does not uh
31:48 surrender in
31:51 chastening verse 10 speaking about our
31:54 Earthly f verse n furthermore we have
31:56 had fathers of our flesh who corrected
31:59 us we gave them reverence
32:00 what are you supposed to do when God
32:02 chastens give him reverence say father
32:04 you're right I'm
32:07 wrong shall we not much rather be in
32:09 subjection under the father of spirits and
32:10 and
32:13 live the suggestion being if we don't
32:16 subject ourselves to the father of
32:21 spirits we may die there is a sin un
32:24 death God accomplished his purposes
32:27 through Samson he did not accomplish his
32:30 purposes in Samson he had to take Samson's
32:31 Samson's
32:34 life God accomplished certain purposes
32:36 through Saul he could not accomplish
32:39 certain purposes in Saul Saul ended up
32:43 dead ananas and saf Ascend unto
32:46 death now this is serious business if
32:47 you and I
32:52 defy obstruct the will of God God is
32:55 going to accomplish his purposes on this
32:57 Earth even if he has to get us out of
32:59 the way but his first concern is
33:02 lovingly to chasten us to bring us back
33:04 into his will that we might be a part of the
33:06 the
33:08 blessing and so Jonah teaches us a
33:11 lesson about defying God's
33:13 will you try to defy
33:17 it God will spank you you keep on
33:20 defying it God may take you this does
33:22 not mean that every Christian who dies
33:25 has committed a sin unto death obviously
33:27 but there are some who have for this
33:29 cause said Paul to the Corinthians many
33:32 are weak and sickly among you and some
33:35 sleep some have
33:39 died now I just want to drop this in
33:41 because it appro it fits in then we'll
33:43 move on to the third
33:45 lesson someone says but you know when
33:47 Jonah was going in the wrong direction
33:51 he was in the permissive will of God I
33:53 will now become a
33:57 heretic God May permit me to do certain things
34:02 God has given me liberty God has given
34:04 me freedom God May permit me to do
34:06 certain things I don't believe he ordained
34:08 ordained
34:11 them you see some Christians think that
34:12 the will of God is like the Sears robot
34:15 catalog good better and
34:18 best you're going to buy a crib for the
34:21 baby and they have a good crib for $35 a
34:24 better crib for $50 and the best crib
34:31 so if you want the very best you got to
34:33 pay for it now the will of God is not
34:37 like this God has one will for my life
34:40 it's good and acceptable and perfect not
34:42 three will I can't if I travel third
34:44 class that's not God's will I can't
34:47 believe that a loving holy God would
34:50 ordain for me to travel third class he
34:52 wants me to travel first class there is
34:57 a third class there's a fifth class
35:00 but don't say God ordained it permits it
35:08 no so many Christians have the idea that
35:10 they can blame God for the messes they get
35:12 get
35:15 into Lord help us when Jonah was out of
35:18 God's will did God permit it yes did God
35:20 ordain it
35:23 no what did God ordain the salvation of the
35:24 the
35:27 ninevites could God have sent Angels
35:28 down should sure but that's not God's
35:31 way of doing it he wants a man God has
35:33 limited himself to
35:41 Grace now the third
35:44 lesson he teaches a lesson about
35:50 will you people are so patient I appreciate
35:52 appreciate
35:55 you the will of God involves my mind I
35:58 should discover God's will
36:01 my heart I should Delight in God's will
36:04 my will I should do God's
36:07 will chapter one God didn't have
36:09 anything of he didn't have Jonah's mind
36:11 he didn't have Jonah's heart didn't have
36:13 Jonah's will he's going in the wrong
36:15 direction chapter 2 Jonah repents God spanks
36:16 spanks
36:19 him he comes back to the place where he
36:21 ought to be but you know what happens in chapter
36:22 chapter
36:26 three with his will Jonah obeys god with
36:29 his mind he knows what God wants him to
36:32 do but his heart is not in it you say
36:34 how do you know read chapter
36:37 4 Jonah builds himself a booth on the
36:39 east side of the
36:42 city this is East Side Story here in chapter
36:43 chapter
36:45 4 and he sits there and waits for God to
36:46 destroy the
36:49 city Jonah preached one of the greatest
36:53 revivals in history the whole city
36:56 repented close to a million people
36:58 repented even the animals
37:01 repented they put sackcloth and ashes on
37:03 the animals there are some animals in my
37:05 neighborhood that I wish would [Music]
37:07 [Music]
37:10 repent and he preached one of the
37:12 greatest revivals in
37:14 history and he hated the people he was preaching
37:15 preaching
37:19 to and in chapter 4 he sits there like a
37:21 like a spoiled
37:24 brat Waiting for God to destroy the
37:28 city and uh God brings the gourd up to
37:30 protect him he's so happy for the gourd
37:32 and then the worm comes and destroys the
37:35 gourd and Jonah loses his victory he's
37:36 concerned about a dead gourd he's not
37:39 concerned about people going to
37:41 Hell by the way you tell me the things
37:44 that you miss and you told me something
37:46 about you what can you do without he
37:48 couldn't do without the G then God sends
37:51 that wind that hot Oriental Desert Wind
37:54 to blow on
37:58 him Jonah says I want to die
38:02 I want to die I didn't get my way I want
38:04 to die you see he had no pity for the
38:05 people that's the whole thrust of Jonah
38:09 chapter 4 God says to Jonah in verse 9
38:11 doest thou well to be angry for the
38:14 gourd he said I do well to be angry even
38:16 unto death if I can't have my gourd I
38:24 die then said the Lord thou Hast had
38:28 pity on the gourd for which thou Hast
38:30 not labored neither made it grow it came
38:33 up in a night it perished in a
38:37 night should not I spare Nineveh that
38:41 great City I made those people they're
38:43 going to live forever either in heaven
38:46 or hell this gourd comes and goes and
38:48 nobody cares you care but you don't care
38:51 about people should not I spare Neva
38:56 that great City in which are more than 6
38:58 score, persons that cannot discern
39:00 between their right hand and their left
39:04 hand that's 120,000
39:13 cattle this is where this chapter leaves
39:18 us the will of God ultimately has to be
39:22 tied with the salvation of lost
39:24 souls whatever God's will is for your
39:27 life my friend ultimately it's going to
39:29 result in the winning of souls you're
39:30 either going to do it personally or help
39:32 somebody else do
39:35 it God's Great concern for the church is
39:37 that we go into all the world and preach
39:39 the gospel to win
39:42 souls and God is concerned about
39:47 souls and he says to Jonah you know what
39:50 your problem is
39:53 son you don't enjoy my will you endure my
39:55 my
39:58 will my friend Paul puts it so
40:01 beautifully in Ephesians chapter 6 doing
40:05 the will of God from the
40:08 heart God loves a cheerful
40:10 cheerful
40:13 servant when he talks about giving don't
40:15 give grudgingly or of necessity God
40:18 loves a cheerful Giver don't do the will
40:21 of God grudgingly or of necessity God
40:23 loves a cheerful liver as well as a
40:30 and Jonah teaches us one great lesson in chapter
40:32 chapter
40:36 4 Delight in God's will love to do God's
40:39 will love people and love God love souls
40:42 love God you the Lord can tell whether
40:44 or not we really love to do his will
40:46 when we argue about it we don't love to
40:49 do it when we delay we don't love to do
40:52 it when we pick and criticize we don't
40:55 love to do it but if we obey instantly
40:57 if we don't argue if we don't lay down
40:58 any conditions he said hey here's
41:00 somebody who loves to do my
41:02 will Jesus said I haven't called you
41:04 servants I've called you friends the
41:06 servants don't know what the Master's
41:07 doing but I want you to know what I'm
41:09 doing I want you to be my friends I want
41:11 to share my love with you and in my love
41:15 is my will oh to come to the place where
41:19 we Delight to do the will of God enjoy
41:22 it because we want to please Our
41:25 Father well here then are three lessons
41:28 that Jonah teaches us how we might
41:29 discover God's
41:33 will he talks to us about defying God's
41:36 Will and delighting in God's
41:39 will which leads us to the very
41:41 important question what is your
41:44 relationship right now to the will of
41:46 God is there something in the word of
41:50 God that convicts us we know we are
41:52 wrong my suggestion friend is to
41:55 straighten it out right now if God is
41:57 saying don't do that and we're doing it
41:59 let's quit if God says do this and we're
42:02 not doing it let's do it and let's pray
42:04 daily that we might come to such a place
42:08 in our spiritual lives that will not be
42:12 grudgingly obeying God will do the will
42:15 of God from our
42:18 hearts father this is our
42:21 prayer forgive us when we
42:30 your word says his Commandments are not
42:34 Grievous Jesus said my yoke is easy my
42:35 burden is
42:38 light oh Father we need to learn
42:41 this wherever this message finds each of
42:44 us oh God help us to
42:47 obey for Jesus sake we
