0:01 hello there and welcome back to the
0:03 closet historian and back to my series
0:05 side hustling where i kind of make
0:07 vlog-ish content talk a little bit more
0:10 about me about my career i mean i don't
0:12 know why i put in i am a youtuber it is
0:13 what i do now it's not really even a
0:15 side hustle i would say that my writing
0:16 is more my side hustle now and that
0:18 youtubing is of course my full-time job
0:20 but i did want to talk about one aspect
0:22 of that job today and that is the sort
0:25 of filmmaking side of what i do i make
0:27 videos i don't you know make films but
0:29 my lookbooks are where i start to dip my
0:31 toe into like short film kind of
0:34 categories of things i'm not a well i
0:35 don't think so i think i'm a terrible
0:38 actress so really i cannot achieve much
0:41 more than just modeling some clothes i
0:43 love writing i love making them mez on
0:46 scene i love doing prop work and doing
0:47 like set design all that kind of stuff
0:50 lighting design especially but um the
0:52 where it really all falls apart
0:54 is my ability to act so one day i'd love
0:56 to maybe direct
0:57 other people would see how it goes but
0:58 in general i wanted to show you some of
1:00 the behind the scenes for making that
1:02 verity lookbook talk about lighting talk
1:04 about some of my equipment today as well
1:05 including filters lights things like
1:07 that and some of the things i do either
1:09 in camera or post-production and the
1:10 difference between those two things so
1:12 let's go ahead and jump back in time to
1:14 me while i'm making the verity lookbook
1:17 with just absolutely terrible sound
1:18 alright well before we get to the
1:20 terrible sound with the iphone recording
1:22 here i have a little bit of mic work to
1:24 tell you what the heck i'm doing here so
1:26 i have set up my camera in front of set
1:28 and i have a piece of white foam uh
1:31 board that it's like taped to a tripod
1:33 to try and get an idea of how i was
1:35 going to do this little window in front
1:37 um like between the camera and the set
1:39 and then i'm here i'm trying to figure
1:40 out the lighting as well but you can see
1:41 i still have cardboard boxes in the
1:43 background those are what i'm gonna
1:45 build my set around the wicker planter
1:46 that this fake plant down here is
1:48 actually in and then i brought down one
1:51 of my bedside table lamps from upstairs
1:52 but i was trying to figure out how to
1:54 cast the shadow of a palm leaf on
1:55 on
1:56 like the window frame thing that was
1:59 going on here to see if this
2:01 like uh like voyerish
2:03 point of view was going to work here a
2:05 frame within a frame which is a filming
2:07 technique that is used to kind of
2:09 separate you from the character that's
2:11 being photographed or the scene that's
2:12 being photographed and is used a lot by
2:15 wong kar wai who i was trying to emulate
2:16 his filmic style for this video a little
2:18 bit so i was trying to figure out a way
2:20 to do a frame within a frame here on my
2:22 own little set and i just grabbed a
2:23 piece of foam core to try and figure it
2:25 out and you can see me walking around my
2:26 pajamas trying to see if this was going
2:28 to work once i had my phone prop
2:30 had come in the mail and seeing if i had
2:32 enough headroom on all that jazz
2:34 starting to play with lighting figure it
2:36 out see what i wanted to do for all this
2:37 hey everyone there's gonna be lots of
2:39 extra noise here but
2:41 alas that's what happens when you're not
2:43 filming you're just
2:45 doing sets and prop stuff so here we
2:48 have our foam sort of
2:49 supposed to be concrete block house like
2:51 frank lloyd wright inspired art deco
2:54 panels um unfortunately these came out a
2:56 little more distressed than the wall
2:57 but it kind of works anyway so we have
2:59 our panels up in the wall and i've got
3:01 some boxes here to make sort of a hall
3:03 table with our plant so i'm going to
3:07 make a hall table telephone lamp table
3:10 plus uh like planter that matches these
3:11 so i'm going to paint them the same
3:12 color and just dress them in a similar
3:15 way i've just been cutting the foam two
3:16 sides so i can put this decoration on
3:18 here and put this little one on this planter
3:19 planter
3:21 and we can cover the wicker plant that
3:23 this plant fake plant is actually in
3:26 and make this whole thing
3:29 match in so this looks like like
3:30 hypothetically there would be a door
3:31 here and you come in you like drop your
3:34 keys on this table kind of a thing
3:36 that's what we're going for there and uh
3:38 so i have been cutting my pink
3:40 insulation foam and i'm trying not to be
3:42 too much of a perfectionist about that
3:44 because again you're not gonna be able
3:45 to tell the detail going on here this is
3:48 just to get the vague idea for this to
3:50 match this and this is just
3:52 cardboard boxes that will be holding up
3:54 the interior structure of this because
3:57 i don't know how to build real furniture
3:59 and here i am after i have glued and
4:00 spackled that together a little bit and
4:02 i can start painting this i
4:03 unfortunately did not get any of the
4:05 faux finishing but it's just using a sea
4:08 sponge and stamping on a darker color to
4:10 get that faux finish well
4:11 well
4:12 we're getting somewhere
4:14 oh i have jazz on in the background that
4:16 might get me copyright extract
4:18 unfortunate we have some lights over here
4:19 here
4:20 we have our
4:22 buddies now faux painted to look like
4:23 it's some sort of a
4:26 like entry table planter combo that goes
4:28 with this concrete block house
4:30 we have some shoes by the fake door that
4:33 would be here you know what i mean
4:34 we may
4:36 need we may need some more props over
4:37 here on our
4:40 telephone table though i have this
4:42 ceramic ooh
4:44 i have this ceramic box
4:45 for cigarettes
4:48 and an ashtray some cards currently
4:50 and of course
4:52 our rotary
4:53 replica phone here [Music]
4:54 [Music]
4:56 yes that's right i had to get a replica
4:58 rotary phone because rotary phones the
5:00 like actual older plastic or like
5:02 bakelite phones are quite collectible
5:03 and therefore on the expensive side so
5:06 this is a replica phone that it would
5:08 work if you plugged it in but my family
5:10 doesn't actually have landline service so
5:11 so
5:13 i can't use it currently but here i have
5:15 the final set pieces and the little cut
5:17 out fake concrete window i have going on here
5:18 here
5:20 in place so i can really start arranging
5:22 everything just as how i would like it
5:23 and then really start messing with the
5:25 lighting i have a lot of lights to play
5:26 with down here
5:28 and i was thinking that this light here
5:31 on the outside of the window-ish next to
5:32 the camera where i was trying to get
5:34 this palm leaf to cooperate by taping it
5:37 to a tripod um i was trying to get the
5:38 palm leaf to cooperate but this light
5:40 out here was such a cool tone of green
5:42 for some reason whatever was going on
5:44 with the uh white balance auto white
5:46 balance at least on my camera was giving
5:48 us a very cool tone green and so i
5:50 actually ended up taping a yellow gel
5:52 which is like a thin piece of yellow
5:54 plastic over this light i had on this
5:57 side to also give this a bit more of a
5:59 yellowy tinge to this green
6:00 and then when i played with my white
6:03 balance later i set it to
6:04 i usually keep it on auto when i'm
6:07 filming but for this it was giving a lot
6:09 of different hues like switching from
6:10 cooler to warmer greens so much that i
6:13 wanted to at least stay standard so if
6:15 it was warm or if it was cool i didn't
6:17 care which it was as long as it stayed
6:18 standard so i ended up putting my camera
6:20 i don't i think i set it for fluorescent
6:21 lighting which none of this is
6:24 fluorescent lighting but you know i had
6:25 to choose something basically but i'm
6:26 just playing around with the lighting
6:28 here really trying to dial in on exactly
6:30 what i want and hoping everything comes
6:34 together my spotlight here has a again a
6:36 gel in it that is yellow so you can see
6:38 that light on the wall in the background
6:40 i have that modeled light again with a
6:42 little bit of a palm tree kind of a fact
6:44 going on with a what is called a cookie
6:45 a um
6:48 gobo which is what you put in front of
6:49 the light to create an image so i could
6:51 put you know whatever image i want to on
6:54 this wall if i had the correct shape cut out
6:55 out
6:58 but i just again on a spare gel a clear
7:00 piece of plastic i drew some palm leaves
7:02 to slip in front of my yellow gel and
7:04 then i set the light at an angle so that
7:06 this would look a bit more um like an
7:08 oval shaped
7:10 uh spotlight as opposed to a
7:12 perfectly round spotlight because of
7:14 course i'm trying to mimic the idea the
7:15 light is coming through one of these
7:18 oval shaped windows and then it was time
7:20 to film the lookbook took me about five
7:22 or six hours to film everything mostly
7:24 because like right here i have this clip
7:26 for this outfit i'm showing the entire
7:28 clip at like 800 times speed or
7:29 something like that it's about 11 minutes
7:30 minutes
7:33 per outfit here um on average so i'm getting
7:34 getting
7:37 shots and takes in this lighting scheme
7:39 and then i will turn my ring light on so
7:41 i have a little bit more white fill
7:42 light so you can see the natural color
7:44 of these things a little bit more and
7:45 i'll model for the second portion of the
7:46 video then and here i'm just doing my
7:49 best to kind of act again not my strong
7:51 suit but talking gibberish into the
7:53 telephone coming in and out of the
7:55 quote-unquote door or like living room
7:56 of this imaginary apartment we have
7:58 going on here and anything i touch on
8:00 this table makes the table wobble quite
8:01 a lot so i'm trying my best to do
8:04 everything lightly and also step lightly
8:05 i have like kind of terrible posture
8:07 you'll notice walking in and out of this
8:09 apartment because i'm trying to step
8:11 lightly on this floor because again
8:13 everything's a set it's not very stable
8:15 so if i step too heavily everything
8:17 moves and you will the illusion will be
8:18 totally broken so i'd rather have a
8:20 little bit worse posture i suppose but i
8:22 am just posing and posing and more
8:24 posing and weirdly enough this is rather
8:28 tiring so modeling is a job i just uh
8:30 thankfully not my full-time job because
8:32 it's quite taxing
8:34 it's not exactly
8:38 as bouffanted as we would like perhaps
8:40 but i just finished
8:41 filming the video
8:43 i've got my lighting still on here we
8:45 have our table still up i'm gonna get
8:48 some b-roll of that before i finish up
8:49 here on set and then i'm gonna try and
8:51 film some intros today as well while i
8:52 have makeup on because you know makeup
8:54 irritates my eyes so as much as i can
8:57 get done in a day with makeup on is
8:58 possible it's good i have been filming
9:00 for about four hours here on set
9:02 um so my feet are killing me because
9:04 i've been wearing different heels that
9:05 whole time and even if the heels
9:07 wouldn't normally hurt just standing in
9:09 them and changing it down for four hours
9:11 means my feet are hurting me so i think
9:12 i'm gonna grab a snack
9:15 and something to drink and get off my
9:16 feet and film a couple of intros
9:18 hopefully for some sewing videos that
9:19 will be coming up shortly for a couple
9:21 of projects that you'll see in this
9:23 video but here i am
9:25 on set everything's an illusion there's
9:28 the door outside from our basement um
9:31 you can see behind me
9:33 what what i see when i'm standing on set
9:35 so what i'm seeing is i've got a soft
9:37 box over here with a green light i got a
9:39 soft box over there with a red light set
9:41 up these are led bulbs with remotes then
9:42 over here
9:45 this is a led bar light that i can set
9:47 to any color and intensity and then this
9:48 is a different kind of light that i can
9:50 put in the description below the type it
9:52 is it's more
9:54 fancy lighting honestly um and this is
9:55 set up so that i have
9:57 a projection of like leaves coming
9:59 through the uh
10:00 oval shaped window that we are looking
10:03 through most of this video and of course
10:05 i have my practical light here which is
10:06 my little
10:08 uh bedside table lamp from upstairs and
10:09 i've been missing it so i'm excited to
10:11 put it back upstairs um and this again
10:12 is a color changing led bulb that i can
10:14 set the color and intensity of then of
10:16 course i have all of my props here that
10:20 i can walk you through um but an old sad
10:22 plant here as well just casting pretty
10:23 great shadows on the wall that we're not
10:25 really using for this video we also have
10:28 two colored lighting here so i have red
10:30 and the green coming from both sides
10:31 along this alley here and then i will
10:34 put my
10:36 ring light on when i need to have some
10:37 white light to fill in so you can see
10:39 what color i'm actually wearing but yeah
10:41 that's the door outside to our
10:43 backyard because this is a walk out
10:44 basement but i have this soft box here
10:46 the two softboxes really first original
10:48 lights i got for doing youtube in
10:49 general and as you see i've really added
10:51 to my lighting kit since then i love
10:53 playing with lighting and experimenting
10:55 with it so um the nice thing about
10:56 having layers of light here is that
10:58 means when i come up here i start to
11:00 have a little bit of back lighting from
11:02 the green light here um but i still have
11:04 that intense red if i come forward far enough
11:05 enough
11:07 you can see that red and the other green
11:09 they'll kind of fade away
11:11 but i can kind of show you what's going
11:17 like that cool
11:19 you can see what that does
11:20 changes things and of course again this
11:23 set is only so tall and only so wide
11:24 and only so
11:26 wide on the floor as well so i only have
11:28 so much space to get these things done
11:30 which is unfortunate but
11:32 does spur me
11:33 make creative solutions that i wouldn't
11:35 have thought of otherwise where is the
11:36 camera here because i'm shooting on my
11:38 phone right now it is behind this with
11:40 another light so this is another piece
11:43 of pink foam insulation foam oh the unit
11:45 turned off now we can actually hear
11:46 this is another piece of pink foam as
11:48 you can see it's painted a little bit
11:49 gray on this side but mostly on the
11:52 other side here is our setup over here
11:53 ignore the junk in the background but i
11:56 have a light again another led color
11:58 change bulb that is clamped on to my tripod
11:59 tripod
12:01 where our camera is currently living
12:03 with our
12:05 very well framed shot so that we can not
12:07 not shoot my own horde or anything so
12:08 that we don't see the rest of the
12:10 basement around it but you can see this
12:11 is the
12:13 faux concrete with a hole punch through
12:15 it that we are looking through and to
12:17 create some weird shadows i have a palm
12:20 leaf with gaff tape taped onto my tripod
12:22 here and that light is shooting up
12:23 through that
12:25 to create those shadows so this is just
12:27 a little bit more uneven um and then i
12:30 do have filters also on this camera i
12:32 have the um
12:35 let me see i think i have the smoke ii
12:37 uh filter from tiffin and then i also
12:38 have the glimmer glass one on here right
12:40 now we'll see how that turns out
12:42 and uh the first time i've been using
12:44 filters recently i'm having fun with
12:46 that and uh this is the setup here basically
12:48 basically for
12:49 for
12:50 getting this
12:52 lookbook shot which probably i put way
12:54 too much effort into such a short video
12:56 but what are you gonna do it's me and
12:59 these are movie magic so this is just my
13:02 pink foam painted to look like weathered
13:03 concrete i don't know how i got this
13:05 there must have been a leak above you
13:08 know that's how this got so
13:09 rained on
13:11 maybe this building has been uh
13:13 you know it was abandoned and then
13:14 re-inhabited and that's what's happening here
13:15 here
13:17 what year it is in this video no one
13:19 knows is it 1963
13:22 is it 2046 no one knows but here's my
13:24 little setup over here it does look
13:26 rather cute i'm not gonna lie
13:28 if i had a frank lloyd wright concrete
13:29 blog house
13:31 entryway like this i would be quite pleased
13:32 pleased
13:34 i suppose i might have walked around set
13:36 a little bit here informal tour again i
13:38 am quite exhausted right now so that
13:39 also contributes to the
13:41 hair deflation
13:42 and the
13:45 personality weirdness perhaps
13:48 or lack of narrating skills
13:50 i'm gonna have to fix that before i film again
13:51 again
13:53 we'll see um let me go ahead and show
13:55 you with the mess
13:57 of all the clothes
14:00 uh various paint and props sitting here
14:02 but this is a a pool table like a
14:04 billiard table that has all of today's
14:06 handbags sitting on it in a mirror just
14:08 in case also extra light bulbs because
14:10 this is a back lot and the wardrobe
14:12 department have a small table with all
14:14 the jewelry i would need then i have all
14:16 my shoes here which looked more
14:18 organized when this i started filming
14:20 and then this rack has all the outfits
14:21 in the order i want to shoot them in
14:23 this actually red brocade outfit i
14:25 didn't get to today my feet just started
14:26 hurting too much and i already had so
14:28 many evening wear outfits for this that
14:28 i was like you know what we're going
14:30 gonna save the red for some other video
14:32 um so that's sitting there but i have my
14:34 bags my jewelry various things this pool
14:38 table is like a junk drawer of this
14:41 back lot that we're on or uh sound stage
14:44 i guess because that is what uh we have
14:46 all of our various props vintage clothes
14:47 i need to sell
14:50 so many things going on here um that are
14:52 right here offset so really only you
14:53 know this much
14:56 of set is ever really done the rest is a
14:59 disaster which is true uh also of me
15:01 like you see the parts that are nice and
15:03 the rest might be a disaster depending
15:04 on the day
15:05 so what i think is clear here is i like
15:07 getting as much of what i want the
15:10 finished frame to look like in camera um
15:12 like during production as possible and
15:14 doing as little in post as possible
15:16 which also uh helps my computer not have
15:18 to render video with a ton of effects on
15:19 it it makes the rendering process go
15:21 faster so here's a shot here with just
15:23 the camera by itself this is my nikon d5200
15:25 d5200
15:29 dslr camera it's not a very advanced uh
15:31 camera for video i mean it is in the
15:32 grand scheme of things but most
15:34 youtubers most video people do not use
15:36 this camera they use much nicer cameras
15:39 but i would rather invest in projects
15:40 and in the whole thing as opposed to in
15:42 just one nice nice camera so this is
15:44 just a pretty basic dslr that's probably
15:45 better for photos than it is for video
15:47 anyhow but this is what this looks like
15:49 with no filter on the front of it this
15:52 is at about 24 millimeters ish on my
15:54 lens i have a kit zoom lens on here that
15:57 goes from 18 to 55. filters and the ones
15:58 i'll be showing you today are from tiffin
15:59 tiffin
16:01 are a piece of glass that you screw onto
16:03 the front it's like sunglasses for your
16:04 lens so you can screw on a piece of
16:06 glass to the front of your lens to give
16:08 different effects and i'll show you the
16:09 filters i've invested in this year and
16:12 what they do to this particular shot
16:15 so here we have no filter on the left
16:17 hand side and then with the tiffin
16:19 glimmer glass one filter on the right
16:20 hand side and you're thinking this shot
16:22 looks quite similar but i ask you look
16:24 at the lights especially around the
16:26 flame of the candles you can see on the
16:27 glimmer glass side it has this like
16:30 fuzzy ring of hellation is what this is
16:33 called where the light is softened and
16:34 also like glow
16:36 expanded around the light source so
16:38 that's kind of what this glimmer glass
16:39 is doing here also glimmer glass is
16:41 famous especially as a scandalous thing
16:43 in the beauty community for giving a bit
16:45 of a soft finish to skin so you can see
16:47 blemishes less which is why of course in
16:48 hollywood they like it as well to make
16:50 actors look flawless and these filters
16:52 do come in different strengths so that
16:53 was glimmer glass one and this is
16:55 glimmer glass three and i think you can
16:57 see there's even more halation going on
16:59 there's even more of uh expanded glow
17:01 from these candles and from the other
17:03 little lines in the background it gives
17:04 a little bit more atmosphere a little
17:05 bit more
17:08 almost blur like things are still in
17:11 focus ish but not fully in focus so it
17:13 gives a little bit more of a dreamy
17:14 quality to this sort of thing which is
17:16 sometimes why filters are criticized
17:17 actually for their dreamy quality and
17:19 then this is here is glimmer glass one
17:20 versus that glimmer glass three so you
17:22 can see the difference here the glamour
17:24 glass three just looks a little bit more
17:25 foggy and atmospheric even in the
17:27 glimmer glass one and again the candle
17:28 in the dark
17:30 setting like this really can show off
17:31 that difference here
17:33 this is video by the way these candles
17:35 weren't moving much but in general these
17:37 are video clips then we have no filter
17:40 here on the left versus the tiffin black
17:43 promised one quarter filter here and
17:45 this retains a bit more contrast the
17:48 black promise does it's got instead of having
17:48 having
17:50 like clear particles in the glass it
17:52 seems to have some sort of black almost
17:54 fleck in the glass that makes retains
17:56 the same amount of contrast but still
17:58 gives us a bit of hellation and
18:00 um punchy color next to our candles here
18:02 so it just still gives a little bit more
18:04 of a magical glow
18:05 that we have going on here these are
18:07 very popular filters the pro mist with
18:09 photographers and uh here on youtube to
18:12 give that cinematic look as they say um
18:15 but i quite like this very light
18:17 1 4 filter here and here's that 1 4
18:20 versus the glimmer glass 3 so you can
18:22 really see how much contrast is
18:23 preserved in the black pro mist as
18:25 opposed to the glimmer glass the glimmer
18:26 glass does flatten the image a little
18:28 bit the contrast between the black
18:30 and the background like it starts to
18:32 blend together a little bit more because
18:34 the image is just a little bit more flat
18:35 whereas the promised really has that you
18:37 know layers from the foreground to the
18:39 background still maintained the contrast
18:40 still maintained a little bit more while
18:42 still having some glow inhalation as
18:45 well and then we have my favorite filter
18:48 so far which is the tiffin smoke ii this
18:50 again comes in different strengths this
18:50 is the
18:52 second strength i suppose i think this
18:54 goes up to three or five or something
18:56 like that but this is meant to mimic
18:58 having a fog machine on or having some
19:00 sort of a
19:02 smoke machine on in the room without
19:03 having to worry about the smoke machine
19:05 having more or less fog so your shots
19:06 don't match up
19:09 or having to inhale smoke on set all day
19:11 like that that fog machine juice will
19:12 give you a throat a sore throat by the
19:13 end of the day i know this from
19:15 experience so i'm really excited to work
19:16 with this smoke filter to give me that
19:18 sort of foggy misty atmosphere without
19:20 having to run the fog machine all the
19:21 dang time
19:23 and here are three of the filters next
19:24 to no filters so you can get an idea of
19:26 what the difference looks like i know
19:27 many people this is going to be very
19:29 subtle but if you look at the no filter
19:31 versus the smoke down in the
19:32 right hand corner there's really a big
19:34 difference in the atmosphere i think all
19:36 three of these filters give a lot more
19:38 atmosphere and sort of a glowy magical
19:40 quality to the shot that of course when
19:42 i'm just shooting down here with my very
19:45 basic dslr in my family's basement i'm
19:48 trying to get as much of a fun and like
19:50 extra quality to my videos as possible
19:51 and these filters are definitely going
19:52 to help me with that so thanks again to
19:54 my patrons for making the investment in
19:55 these filters a possibility because i'm
19:57 going to have a lot of fun with these
19:58 working into the future
19:59 and i do have one more to show you and
20:02 this is the tiffin star 4.2 millimeter
20:04 filter this is actually a 55 millimeter
20:06 lens so that's the size of the actual
20:08 filter itself but this star filter you
20:11 can spin the and also these all work in
20:13 lighter situations by the way but the
20:14 star filter this is the four point star
20:16 you can get different points of star on
20:18 it but it really works well for sparkly
20:19 things like this so any light source really
20:20 really
20:22 will have the star effect but it's a
20:25 gridded filter that gives this sparkle
20:27 effect to everything including
20:29 all of my jewelry here so i haven't used
20:30 this one yet in a video but i'm looking
20:32 forward to using it in the future
20:34 here again this is the smoke 2 filter
20:36 with the lights on just you can see what
20:37 that looks like still gives me a little
20:39 bit of smoky atmosphere even with a lot
20:41 more light on our subject but these are
20:42 all actual physical filters that go on
20:44 the end of the camera lens it's not like
20:45 on instagram where you choose a filter
20:47 that goes over your finished video
20:49 that's a post-production effect this is
20:51 a in production in camera effect and my
20:53 favorite kind of effect i like to do as
20:56 much as possible in camera i like a
20:57 practical effect
20:59 i you know i grew up on movies from the
21:01 80s which had practical effects and i am
21:02 one of those who thinks that practical
21:04 effects always just look a little bit
21:06 better than most digital effects these
21:09 days and honestly speaking of set design
21:11 this is my new sort of backdrop i have
21:14 going on over here i kind of rearranged
21:16 all the stuff it's a bit spooky but i
21:18 plan on keeping it
21:21 year-round as we know and these are led
21:22 like fairy lights and then i have some
21:24 strip lighting from ikea that i can
21:26 change the color of at will and i did
21:28 bring mcconnell over you know he was
21:29 kind of on the other side of the room
21:31 and wasn't getting a lot of attention i
21:34 didn't turn him on very often um but i
21:35 feel he deserves a pride of place in the
21:37 background you know we gotta gotta give
21:39 mcconnell some attention and mcconnell
21:41 is named mcconnell after christine
21:42 mcconnell because she has one of these
21:44 tv lamps and i saw and said
21:46 i'm going to be needing that and went on
21:48 ebay and found one as soon as possible
21:51 but yes verity is done i do have other
21:52 look books planned for this year i have
21:54 two others that i have planned this year
21:56 that are both
21:58 i kind of have i might be overachieving
21:59 on the ideas of what i want to do for
22:00 the sets for those we'll see how it goes
22:03 it'll be expensive mostly i think uh
22:04 more than anything which that's kind of
22:06 fine you know i don't mind investing in
22:08 the channel um you know it would be nice
22:10 if the channel would grow a little bit
22:12 faster to make up for that kind of thing
22:14 but honestly the size of the channel
22:15 doesn't uh
22:17 it used to be something that i thought a
22:19 lot about of course i want to grow my
22:20 presence here on youtube i want to grow
22:22 my channel because it is my job and
22:24 therefore going to be my livelihood here
22:27 um or is but really patreon took over
22:30 that and i'm able to keep doing this as
22:33 my job because of patreon i make
22:36 i would say one fifth of my income on
22:38 youtube and the rest is funded by my
22:40 patrons so thank you so much for making
22:43 my work possible because without patreon
22:44 i would not be able to keep doing this
22:45 as my job and i would have gone and
22:48 found a real person job at this point um
22:49 and wouldn't be able to keep doing this
22:51 at the level that i currently am but yes
22:53 that's a behind the scenes tidbit that
22:54 you don't make nearly as much money on
22:56 youtube if you're not doing sponsored
22:58 like sponsored videos and sponsorships
23:00 but i just
23:02 i don't want to talk to you about
23:04 glasses or shampoo
23:06 or vpns or whatever
23:08 to me it just never is going to feel
23:10 natural the only kind of sponsorships i
23:12 think that would feel natural for me is
23:14 a fabric supplier um and i talk and rave
23:16 about them without them having to pay me
23:18 so i think i've already
23:20 uh you know shot myself in the foot
23:21 there as it were and now that the
23:24 channel is inching closer to 100 000
23:25 subscribers which would be my goal for
23:28 this year but we'll see how it goes tell
23:29 your friends about the channel
23:31 if you want to help me get that silver
23:32 plaque that means basically nothing but
23:34 i would you know find somewhere in the
23:35 office to put in it would make me feel
23:37 like i had actually
23:38 like made it or something you know i
23:40 keep getting a lot of spam comments we
23:42 had someone who was spamming the
23:43 comments about giveaways one of those
23:45 bots recently so that really did make me
23:46 feel like well
23:48 we've really got there because we're
23:50 getting random spam giveaway people in
23:51 the comments at this point which is just
23:52 an unfortunate side effect of the
23:54 channel reaching a certain size honestly
23:56 if if anything but yes one of the side
23:57 effects of having your channel reach a
23:59 certain size is you do get more emails
24:01 from like every company under the sun
24:02 who want you to tell your followers
24:05 about their stuff and it's like you guys
24:07 come here for sewing first me second
24:11 maybe vintage fashion not for
24:14 vpn recommendations so i'm not gonna
24:16 give them to you i i don't even use a
24:18 vpn but maybe i should so yes i guess an
24:21 update on youtube is that i'm surprisingly
24:22 surprisingly
24:25 stable at the size that i'm at i don't crave
24:26 crave
24:28 numbers the way i used to i guess when i
24:30 was starting out i was worried about
24:32 making this my job of course and it's
24:34 thanks to patron that it has become my
24:35 job and
24:37 it's just constantly a surprise to me i
24:39 don't feel like i deserve the amount of
24:40 support that i have received in some
24:43 ways i can only hope to live up to that
24:44 amount of support really i just try and
24:47 make better and better content trying um
24:48 um
24:51 like i don't curate my content to the
24:53 best that i can do at any given moment
24:55 um of course like there's a lot more
24:56 things i would like to make i would like
24:58 to make things more more videos and
25:00 better videos at all times it's just you
25:02 know week to week that doesn't always
25:04 work out for me sometimes i have to
25:06 sacrifice on some element because you
25:09 know life takes over we get kittens
25:10 kittens have
25:13 ringworm you have brainworm you know
25:16 things happen uh so uh i can't always
25:17 put out the
25:19 top top tier quality content that i want
25:21 to but hopefully i think my videos have
25:23 improved over the years and hopefully
25:25 they will continue to improve um and i
25:27 just want to provide the best content i
25:29 can and as much of it as i can without
25:31 burning myself out honestly because
25:34 that's the only way i can feel like i
25:35 you know even can come close to
25:37 deserving the amount of support i have
25:39 received and speaking of support and my
25:41 goals that i have for this year um one
25:43 of them is of course to save up for a
25:45 house and i am working on that i am about
25:46 about
25:49 ah maybe a third of the way
25:51 like a little under half
25:53 perhaps of where i want to be as far as
25:55 like saving for a down payment for a
25:57 very cheap house uh the difference here
26:00 is i'm not saving for an expensive house
26:03 or a averagely priced house here in
26:05 the united states most houses
26:06 are half a million dollars in the united
26:08 states i should think at least and i
26:10 personally am looking for a house that is
26:10 is
26:12 slightly decaying
26:14 not like the bones but like the inside
26:17 needs some work uh cosmetic needs a lot
26:18 of cosmetic fixes i guess i'm i'm
26:21 willing to learn how to do tile and i'm
26:22 willing to pull up carpet and paint and
26:25 do all the work inside um so i'm looking
26:26 for a place that has good bones but
26:29 possibly has a lot going on inside that
26:31 needs to be fixed um and not necessarily
26:34 in a nice big city
26:36 so we're kind of out of the way that's
26:37 what makes these places cheaper and
26:40 affordable for me so i do poke around on
26:42 zillow and dream about these places
26:43 there are a couple that you know have
26:44 been on the market for so long that
26:45 there's probably something wrong with
26:47 them but i do still dream about them so
26:49 we'll see if they're still there in six
26:52 months from now when i'm just gonna be
26:53 starting to look a lot more seriously
26:55 and again that is only possible thanks
26:57 to your support here on the channel and
27:00 over on patreon as well um i it would be
27:03 an absolute dream come true for me to be
27:05 able to buy my own home
27:07 out of this world dream come true
27:09 everything i've ever wanted honestly so
27:11 um if that is something that can happen
27:12 within the next year
27:15 again it's only thanks to your help um and
27:17 and
27:18 the things we could do with
27:22 that the amount of home decor stuff and
27:24 curtains and
27:26 that i could do i would really love to
27:30 fix up and make spoopy in my my
27:32 particular way a jewel tone gothic box
27:33 of a house
27:35 and i would of course share all that diy
27:36 with you um
27:38 i'm you know that's my dream so
27:39 hopefully we will get there i am just
27:42 under half of the way there which is
27:43 actually not that surprising because we
27:45 all know how i like
27:47 to shop that's the update on saving for
27:49 a house oh i did want to get a new
27:51 tattoo this year so uh halfway through
27:53 the year a little more than halfway
27:54 through the year goal here
27:56 i was able to do that so that's good um
27:58 i end up may even end up getting more
28:00 because i really like this artist and
28:02 she's newish so she's still not
28:04 like uh you know every other tattoo
28:06 artist was crazily overbooked because
28:08 they're way popular so before she gets
28:09 really popular because she's really good
28:11 i need to book in some time i think i'm
28:12 terribly behind on my reading goals but
28:15 there's no surprise there i'm terribly
28:17 behind on my writing goals but there's
28:20 also no surprise there so i really have
28:21 again been focusing this year on the
28:23 channel and my work here um and trying
28:26 to stay afloat of that stuff and on top
28:28 of it because i have you know i lost my
28:30 one cat which was a lot of that visits
28:32 and being sad and then we got kittens
28:33 which is a lot of vet visits and being
28:36 happy and distracted so um i've had some
28:38 pet related drama going on in my life
28:41 this year um i've had some pmdd related
28:42 drama going on in my life this year i
28:45 recently just got fed up and like
28:48 googled is like extended fatigue a
28:50 symptom of pmdd and the answer is yes so
28:52 at least i know why sometimes i'm just
28:54 exhausted for like i will wake up and
28:56 i'm super tired the other day i had two
28:57 cups of coffee in the morning and i
28:59 usually only have one and i did feel a
29:00 lot better but do i really want to
29:02 become dependent on three cups of coffee
29:04 a day instead of two
29:06 probably not although coffee is
29:07 delicious so it is tempting so you know
29:10 life does happen and get in the way
29:12 um and i think because the writing
29:14 project i'm currently working on we
29:15 could say that
29:16 even though i haven't written any new
29:19 words for it in months um
29:20 um
29:21 it's like the last book of a series and
29:23 therefore i think i'm building it up too
29:24 much in my brain like thinking oh this
29:27 like the finale of this this character's
29:29 story i need to make sure that like
29:30 everything rounds together and calls
29:32 back and look i think i'm putting too
29:33 much pressure on myself and i just need
29:35 to write and
29:37 layer that stuff in later you know so
29:39 we'll see how it goes i am one of my
29:42 main goals like here at the midway point
29:44 ish a little past the midway point one
29:45 of my goals with my scheduling for the
29:47 rest of the year is to
29:48 like front load my schedule in the next
29:50 couple of months and then try and take
29:52 all of december off not for you you will
29:54 still be seeing videos i'm going to try
29:56 and pre-record everything for december
29:58 that way i can take december off and do
30:00 some projects that i need to do here in
30:01 this house
30:03 just before i start thinking about
30:05 moving clearing out some stuff again
30:07 doing another huge closet clear out and
30:09 being really strict with myself about
30:10 like what do i want to if i'm going to
30:12 move halfway across the country i need
30:15 to do some clearing out and making some
30:18 less packing for myself in ways um so
30:20 i'm hoping to pile all that kind of
30:21 stuff and then also writing into
30:24 december we'll see how it goes but uh
30:26 you know send me good vibes that i can
30:28 get a lot done before december so that i
30:30 can take that time off we'll see how it
30:31 goes i'll update you you know at the end
30:33 of the year and see how that went but
30:34 thank you so much for watching this
30:36 video today and coming along with me on
30:38 this journey this really has you know
30:40 the reason i started making these side
30:41 hustle videos is because i wanted to document
30:42 document
30:43 going from
30:45 you know being a blogger and switching
30:47 onto youtube and like the journey of
30:50 trying to make this my job and now it is
30:51 and i think i really need to need to
30:53 come to terms with the fact
30:56 like let that be a bit of a success i um
30:58 don't really celebrate my successes
30:59 because i always feel like you know i'm chasing
31:00 chasing
31:02 what really what i really feel success
31:03 is which i'm not even sure what that is
31:06 anymore but one day in therapy i will
31:07 find out but again thank you for
31:09 humoring me here today and i'll be back
31:11 with more of the good stuff all that
31:13 sewing costuming vintage fashion all the
31:15 good stuff here real soon so i'll see
31:17 you then bye and another huge thank you
31:19 to viewers like you for watching my
31:21 videos and for supporting me here online
