May God greatly bless you. Welcome to
this Bible study. We are dealing with
the topic of Revelation, and with that
line of thinking at the level of
eschatology, the purpose of this video
will be to give a panoramic view of this
last book of the Bible. Being
panoramic, I will try to address each
of the contents, but it will not be possible to
go into detail on each one
due to the breadth of the message. With
this video, you have the
option to pause when
appropriate to analyze, to
look up the biblical citation, to rewind the video, to
watch it again so that you
can fix and understand the content and
even more so the message I want to convey.
Obviously, when talking about the
eschatology of Revelation, it can
generate a problem, a conflict, because they are
really dense, complex,
and to some extent, somewhat speculative concepts. What
I will try to do next
is a description of what has to
do with eschatology within the Church and, to a large
extent, within the Assemblies of
God. I don't mean to say that
everything described here in this
video is necessarily the official position; I don't intend to
be the official voice, but rather to bring together,
ultimately The message, or what we as
Pentecostals believe, will
also sometimes raise
some perspectives,
the doctrinal stance that I hope will
enrich this academic exercise.
So, welcome to all, and I hope it will be
of great benefit to you. Well,
Well,
final events: the study of
eschatology and the apocalypse.
When we talk about the apocalypse, the
first thing we must refer to is
the definition of the term itself,
and essentially it means revelation, to reveal, to make
known something that was
hidden. Traditionally, the
figure, the metaphor of drawing back the veil, of
removing the veil, is used. I think of a
play where there is a curtain that
is drawn back to reveal the
stage and each of the acts that will take place.
However, this
connection of theater with the apocalypse
is not so clear historically, although it is
a good illustration to
understand. When we talk about the book of
Revelation, the perception that is
generally held is, on the one hand, the
cataclysm, the collapse of the world, the
destruction, but only as phenomena,
sometimes meteorological or environmental, or
sometimes perhaps as a consequence of
an evil god, perhaps just angry and wanting to destroy
wanting to destroy
everyone. On the other hand, it has a somewhat
dualistic perspective about it. The idea that the Apocalypse is
a cosmic conflict between
good and evil, an eternal conflict between
God and Satan, is far from
presenting this perception.
Throughout the text, God is sovereign;
the enemy is merely an agent, an
actor in this
scene who will also be
judged, as Scripture describes.
Therefore, these conceptions are
mistaken. What we must keep in mind when
studying Revelation is the
glory, the radiance of God, of Christ
himself revealed, because that is precisely what the
revelation of Jesus Christ,
given to the apostle, is: Christ, his
person, and his work, which are revealed in
Revelation. In the Gospels,
his manifestation in the
Incarnation is revealed, here at that time when he lived among
us as a human being.
But Revelation shows us that phase:
phase:
Christ as King of Glory, who will return to the
world to judge. So, I invite you,
when you study Revelation, to
keep that image in mind—not the image
of destruction, but the image of
Christ, the glorified Christ.
There are many
converging aspects to the Book of Revelation that cause
conflict in its
proper study. Revelation
encompasses many genres and
forms within itself, such as the
apocalyptic genre.
This
literary genre includes figures that are perhaps grotesque or bizarre, like monsters or dragons. It
corresponds to what is
traditionally called the
apocalyptic genre. In our Pentecostal paradigm, it is eschatological, referring to
events that will be fulfilled
here on Earth. It
is also prophetic; the book itself is described
as having been given a prophetic prophecy to John. It
has an epistolary character
because it is a letter, a written work.
Even in the early chapters,
it says, "Write to the angel of the church."
There are a series of letters
there, defining some
general aspects of Revelation that obviously
create a high degree of complexity
when studying it.
Traditionally, there are at least four
schools of interpretation of the Book of Revelation. That is to say,
I have the text, now I read it and
interpret it. Traditionally, there are at
least four currents. The
first of these, the preterite
perspective, has to do with a
fulfillment in some way, literal and
historical, yes, but that everything
recorded in Revelation would have a
fulfillment in the first century in the
early church. In such a way that, from
this perspective, as Christians, we would no longer
expect a future fulfillment, but rather it would be
a teaching, so to speak,
historical, ethical, and theological, based on what
God does, but we would not
expect any of the judgments that are already
described. The second school of
interpretation to consider is the
idealist one, which sees Revelation only as
a novel, as a myth, as the
recreation of the eternal conflict between
good and evil, where good always prevails.
prevails.
It is a concept where
the person is morally and ethically invited to remain
just because, ultimately, one day God will
do something. The third perspective is
the historical one, and from there,
Revelation is seen as a book that has been
fulfilled throughout history,
beginning In the first century, throughout
the centuries, and continuing to be fulfilled
over time,
each of these three perspectives
has a valuable contribution and some merit.
However, a fourth
perspective, which the Assemblies of
God Pentecostal movement holds, is
a school called futurism. This means
considering that while there are events that were
fulfilled in antiquity, and while there are
events that are replicated throughout
history, and of course in
theological and moral teachings in the text, what
the book seeks to mention—a
caliber—are future events.
This is the school of interpretation
that the Pentecostal movement, which
we as Assemblies of God, use.
The eternal question is: how to
choose one or the other, or which of them
is more important or more valid? In this
exercise, I think we cannot
definitively discard any of them, but that would be
another topic, a more hermeneutical one, to
determine why we consider the
futurist interpretation to be the correct one
for reading Revelation. For now, that
will be our basis for interpretation: the futurist one.
futurist one.
We have to start from the fact that Revelation
was given to the Apostle John. Normally, we cannot
look The historical framework for
considering the authenticity of the
text is quite extensive, and
I want to focus on the biblical text. That's why I'm
skipping ahead and taking for granted some
important aspects of the
introduction. Now, the book of Revelation
has two specific purposes: number
one, to bear witness to the glory of
Jesus Christ, the glory of Christ, the glory
of God; and
purpose number two, to give comfort to
believers in tribulation. From the
beginning, in chapter 1, verse 9, it
says, "I, John, a fellow worker in our
tribulation." John describes himself as
also in tribulation, and indeed, he
was on the island of Patmos as a prisoner
for the sake of the gospel. Therefore, it
speaks of a community that has been
afflicted. It doesn't consider this tribulation
as what would be mentioned later regarding
judgment, but it does show that in
daily life, in everyday occurrences, there are tribulations.
Revelation has an outline; we can
present it this way, and three
themes or three parts of it
can be defined starting from chapter 1,
verse 19, when the
apostle is told to write the things which you have seen,
the things which are, and the things which you have heard. Things that must
come after these, those you have seen in
chapter 1, those that are in chapters 2 and 3,
those that must come after these—this is
an outline proposed for the book,
and from which this will be worked out. So,
first of all, the
things you have seen in chapter
one, and it refers to the glory
of Christ himself. John on the island of
Patmos has that revelation, he has that
vision, and in chapter 1,
seven titles are described for
Jesus Christ: the one who was, the one who is, and the one who is to
come, the 100th witness, the
firstborn from the dead, the ruler
of the kings of the earth, the Alpha and the
Omega, the Almighty, and the Son of
Man—a very Christological burden
throughout the book, and especially in this
first section.
Now, seven traits
of a physical appearance are also described, which to a large
extent is different from his
incarnation, but which obviously has
that contrast or that resemblance to a
human being. However, they go beyond that. I do
n't mean to say that it would be
a divine appearance; it is not the
revelation, as was demonstrated, and I would
invite you to You, who can analyze without
exaggerating the mysticism, without
overusing symbols,
but also without looking at it too
superficially, consider each of
these elements, these qualities that are
described. It speaks of his head and
white hair, his eyes like a flame of
fire, his feet like burnished bronze, his
voice like the sound of many waters, in his
day these seven stars, from his mouth a
sharp sword, his face like the sun
at its brightest. Yes, it
is a description of the glory of
Christ manifested, and it is very beautiful for
John because he was
considered the beloved disciple and a
person close to Jesus, and it must have been
very exciting for the apostle
after having seen Christ in his
three and a half years of ministry, in
his passion, in his death, in his
resurrection, to now see him in this
truly glorified form. It must have been a very, very
special experience for the
apostle, one that filled him with hope and
motivated him, obviously, to remain faithful to the
Lord and, in obedience, to write the book
of Revelation.
These are the things you have seen, the things
that are in chapters 2 and 3. Again,
we could not dwell in detail on this,
but let us consider some
Fundamental elements of it, chapters 2 and
3, are a message given
specifically to seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thea, Tiras,
and Philadelphia. The Odyssey, chapters
1 through 3, speaks
of some symbols that we interpret as follows:
the seven lampstands
described in these passages
represent the seven churches; the
seven angels and the seven stars
refer to the pastors. In chapter
1, it says they have the seven
stars, and in each of the letters, it
says, "Write to the angel of the church," and
we consider that this refers to
the pastors, or if you prefer,
spiritual leaders,
people in charge of the congregations
in each of these
cities in Asia Minor. The seven
spirits of Jehovah, Isaiah 11:2,
refer to them, and for your consideration, you could meditate on it. It's
not that there are seven
spirits; it's only one, the
Holy Spirit of God. But there is a mention in
Isaiah where
the spirit is traditionally considered the sixth
precept, which in this case, when it says in
Isaiah... It will rest upon the Spirit of
Jehovah, the Spirit of wisdom, of understanding, of
counsel, of might, of
knowledge, and of the fear of God. Then,
considering the seven
the things that are related to the
message of the seven churches in these
charts, which you can watch in the video and
observe more closely, there is a
description of each of the churches, their
location, the
positive characteristics attributed to them, the
negative characteristics that exist, and
in this case, an interpretation of the
dispensation, which I will explain in a
moment in the video.
Some specific characteristics of
Christ and some warnings, as well as
promises, also appear. Each of these churches
would require a particular study, and the
study of the seven themselves would require a much
broader one. For practical purposes,
thinking about the third part, which is the
largest section and what it has to do
with eschatology,
that will be the one we address. I invite
you again to research and
consult about this message to the
seven churches. What I do want to
emphasize is that the message itself
to the seven churches also has
interpretations, and at least I can
Consider three at this moment: one, the
past tense interpretation,
again, fulfillment in antiquity,
that is, it was a certain church
literally in Asia Minor that
received a message, and for them,
that word was it. We do not share that position.
The second interpretation is the
historical interpretation, which is
precisely what has to do with
that possibility of a dispensation, that is,
that these seven churches
represent seven periods of the church
throughout history, beginning with
the first century and ending in our
days. This dispensation interpretation is not endorsed, it is not accepted at
this time,
mainly for
two reasons: number one, because since the
year 1000 they have been making that
interpretation, and for those who
started it at that time, well, the
year 1000 was the last church, the Odyssey,
and so those 1000 years were divided
into seven periods, but as
time passes, seeing that life goes on,
they make a new adjustment,
and we are now in the new
adjustment where the Odyssey is no longer from the
year 1000 but from the year
2020. So yes, this is not coming in
these days; perhaps there is a new
current, a historical readjustment, and well, that really...
really...
The second reason is that it detracts from the seriousness of the study of Revelation.
If it corresponds to specific
time periods, as happens in the
preferred interpretation,
then the word would be
specifically for a group, and not
for all believers. If so,
the promises given to the church
of Sardis would only be for that group
in a specific time period, perhaps during
the Reformation, and would have nothing to do
with us.
Our perspective on the Bible is not that
we believe all Scripture is
edifying for all believers at
all times. While there were
indeed churches in
Asia Minor with these names,
God's message was not only for them but
for everyone. Therefore,
we prefer an interpretation that
we could call representative in this case.
That is to say, literally, there were
churches in the first century that
received this message, but the
words are fulfilled and apply to all
believers, to the entire church at
all times. What I mean by this is that, to a large extent,
extent,
these seven types of churches exist at all times.
Someone might even say that
in every church there can be believers
of each of these messages, believers
like the... Philadelphia, if brotherly and
believing love is like the Odyssey, ultimately they
think they are rich but are really poor
believers of Ephesus, that is to say, they have
left their first wife, that is to say,
they literally exhibited churches with these
names in the first century, but these
churches represent the body of
Christ throughout the world and at all
times. Now, it would be a bit risky,
but it would be worth the exercise to
consider, well, in which church I
feel, I identify. That
would require a deeper study, but above all,
more than study,
really return to God and ask the
Lord what my
spiritual reality is, and let God be the one who
blesses you with His word of promise,
also call your attention when we are failing.
failing.
Now, the things that must be, but
the things you have seen in the Revelation of
Jesus Christ, chapter 1, the things that are,
chapters 2 and 3, the message to the churches.
We consider then the things that must
be after these, they say after
these, 11 says those that will soon take place, and
22, 7, 22 does not say, "Here I am coming soon."
Some people who have the cut
prefer this They would say, "It's useful, it says there that it
would happen soon, and well, two
thousand years have passed, therefore it wouldn't be soon."
However, consider for a
moment how much time passed from the
first announcements of the Incarnation, the
first coming of Christ, until its
fulfillment. If we think, for example, of
Moses, Moses announced that God would
raise up a prophet like himself, greater
than himself, and yesterday we would have to
go. This prophecy is fulfilled in Christ, and
it was written more or less 1500
years before this. So the
announcement, the prophecy for the coming of
Christ, was to take 2500 years to fulfill.
Throughout time, more and
more signs were given until finally
the prophecies of Isaiah were fulfilled—
perhaps in the sixth or
fifth century BC. Six thousand six hundred
years passed for them to be fulfilled. So,
God saying "I am coming soon" doesn't really
operate within our same conception of
time. So the Lord said "I am coming
soon," and an evident reality is imminent,
and that is the return of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Although it may be soon, it will have to be
defined within our
paradigm. As human beings in our
chronology, how long will it be now,
as the Word says, the day and the hour, no
one knows; only the Father has that
power alone. When we speak
of the Apocalypse, we mention the
seven churches, but a structure, even
in this part of the things that will
be after these, could be
considered like the seals: seven seals,
seven trumpets, and seven bowls of wrath.
Some consider these elements to be
sequential, one after the other,
and in a way, it's a progression of
periods, each one more judgment, more judgment,
until the consummation arrives, which is
the manifestation of the second coming of
Christ and Armageddon. Others consider it to be
a cyclical thought,
like a spiral or a concentric circle, so that what
the seven seals say, and what they feel,
would be the same as the seven
trumpets, the same as the seven bowls,
only each one reveals more
details of the same. The
traditional position is to consider them as
sequential events that will
occur in time, and internally,
in time after the rapture. Forgiveness,
and now, in order to understand the things
that are From our perspective, we must briefly consider
the concept of what we would
traditionally call the 70
weeks of Danielle Se, specifically the 70th week, in
the eschatological context.
This has its basis in the Bible, specifically in
chapter 9, verses 24-27,
where God answers the prayer of this
prophet, this man of God, and tells him
that there will be 70 weeks. He then specifies the purpose of these
70 weeks concerning the holy city, which
is Jerusalem, the catalyst in
this case: to end transgression, to
put an end to sin, to atone for iniquity, to
bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up
vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
[Music]
Within this framework,
we would then ask whether
these 70 weeks have already been fulfilled, or what we can perceive. The thing is,
those 70 weeks of partial fulfillment are
not yet complete.
And in that same prophecy, it says, "Know, you
understand that from the order
to restore Jerusalem until the Messiah, the
Prince, now seven weeks and sixty-
two weeks. After the 62 weeks, the
Messiah, the Prince, will be put to death,
the city will be destroyed, and for another week,
the act will be confirmed." So, when would the order
to restore Jerusalem be? If
you have studied the Old Testament, you will know that there are
three times of
repatriation, with only Babel, with slash,
with lines, and there are different theories about
when that order was given, whether it was
Cyrus's order or the order of another king.
So, we do
n't have the exact date, but somehow
the order to rebuild comes from someone
after the time of Daniel until the
Messiah, the Prince, seven weeks and sixty-two
weeks, that's a total of 69 weeks, meaning
there is one more week. It says, after
those 62 weeks, seven more weeks, the Messiah, the
Prince, will be put to death.
We understand that it refers to Christ Jesus, so therefore,
the destruction of the
city would be the destruction From Jerusalem
in the year 70, what is important in
this case, what is relevant for
eschatology, is this last week. It
confirms the covenant and says that
in the middle of the week, the
sacrifice will cease, and with many
abominations, the sacrifice of the welder will come, which
will bring about the consummation. Many
consider that this last week was already
fulfilled immediately after the
first coming of Christ, after the ascension.
But as Assemblies of God, as
Pentecostals, we consider this
week prophetic, and in some way,
we find an equivalent in the
words of Jesus in Luke 4 when he is in
Nazareth. Then the
scroll of the prophet Isaiah is given to him to read,
saying, “Today
this prophecy has been fulfilled in your midst: ‘
The Spirit of the
Lord is upon me, because he has
anointed me to proclaim good news, to
bring freedom to the oppressed,
sight to the blind, release to the
prisoners, and healing to the dead.’ But he says, ‘To
proclaim the year of God’s favor.’
Isaiah, the text continues, ‘and
the day of vengeance.’” of our God, but
it is striking that Jesus does not refer to
that last phrase, that fundamental phrase,
but rather ends by proclaiming the year
of God's good will.
We understand that Jesus came in his first
manifestation here on earth to
announce God's good will, but
in his second coming he will announce
the day of our God's vengeance.
Therefore, it would be Jesus himself who validates
that space, that pause between his
first and second coming. The same would
have to keep in mind that these are weeks,
but weeks of years. Two
interesting references in the Bible: 1. Genesis
29:27, when he is working
for his wife's dowry and
works for 7 years, and his father-in-law tells him to
work in this week
of years. Also, in Leviticus
25:8, when it speaks of the Feast of
Weeks or the Jubilee, when it says to count
seven weeks of years, seven times seven is
49 years, and the 50th year is the Jubilee.
This vision of the 70 weeks of
Daniel did not refer to weeks
of days, but to weeks of...
There are some very
interesting books that attempt to calculate
when these first 69 weeks begin and end.
You can consult them, but for
practical purposes, we won't include them in this
study. We're not interested in week 70. If
you recall, it refers to the middle of the
week, the midweek, in the book of
Apocalypse. We consider that this
last week fulfills this requirement because of
four texts described in
Revelation 11:2 and Revelation 13:5, when it
refers to a
42-month period. In a calculation like this, based on the
Jewish calendar and our own calendar, 42 months.
The year has 12 months, so we would be
talking about three and a half years, or half
of seven. A week of seven years,
three and a half years, would be
42 months. And also in
Revelation 11:3 and 12:6, when it speaks
of 1260 days in a very
general, very broad calculation, but to do it,
or to look for symmetry, if
we talk about those 30-day months, to
make an approximation, if we show 1260
days in 30 days... In a month, we would be
talking about 42 months, that is, 3
and a half years. The reasons we find
in Revelation are why we consider that when they say, "Go to the middle of the week, the sacrifice will cease," and so what does this 70th week of Daniel have to do with the events of the book of Revelation? Essentially, it is the timeline in
Pentecostal eschatology. We speak of
the creation of the Old Testament,
Christ in His first coming, the ascent and
descent of the Holy Spirit, that time
of the church, and then the
rapture of the church, events in
heaven and on earth, the second
coming of Christ
with Armageddon and the judgment of the
nations, the millennium, Gog and Magog, the judgment
of the great white throne, and eternity. This is
the timeline that we
generally study in discipleship, and which we
want to expand upon in this Bible study,
but focusing mainly on
the rapture again. And
this is a position that I personally believe. I pray
to God that somehow it will be so
now, and I await the rapture
of the church. It is a position held by
most of... Believers, I have an
important question: Are the Rapture and the Second
Coming of Christ the same event, or
are they different events? These two dates,
one ascending and the other descending, are
marked by what we really want to know. We want to know
if they are the same event or
distinct. For practical purposes, and remaining
faithful to the Pentecostal chronology, we
will consider the Rapture
and the Second Coming of Christ as two different
phenomena. The
Rapture would be the trigger for
the events that would follow for seven years,
and then, after seven years,
the Second Coming of Christ would occur. However, I
would like us to consider this diagram
proposed by some authors, including
German A. Hoyts in the book *The Time of the
End*. It considers the paradigm that
the Second Coming is not a
one-day event, but rather a phenomenon,
an event that
spans a considerable amount of time. Just as
the First Coming of Christ lasted approximately
33 years, a little more, considering his
birth, life, growth,
ministry, death, resurrection, and so on, it is
a long period that we call the First
Coming of Christ. Similarly,
consider the second coming of Christ
not as a single point in
history, but as a period of time that essentially
essentially
spans seven thousand and seven
years. If
you add the thousands of years, we'll be
discussing this in a few minutes. I reiterate, we would be
talking about the
timeline of Pentecostal eschatology,
where, for practical purposes, the rapture
and the second coming of Christ are two
distinct phenomena separated by seven
years. We will discuss these
characteristics now. In this timeline,
the rapture of the church: before
the rapture occurs, there will be
prior signs. We cannot know when it will happen,
but there are some warnings of this
event, signs that we can find in the
second part of the Bible, Matthew 6:23, Matthew 24, and Matthew
12, among other references
that we consider number one. First,
the apostasy will occur. What is
apostasy? It is turning away and denying the faith.
faith.
Many, many people who confessed their
faith, who profess to be believers,
turn away. It is something very sad.
That there is a warning that before
the rapture
the love of many will grow cold. The question is, what will
Jesus find faith on earth
when the Son of Man comes?
Sadly, apostasy will be a seal,
a sign of the coming of Christ and the
rapture of the church. Number 2: the
manifestation of the man of sin, what we
traditionally consider to be the
Antichrist. The Antichrist, then,
here Paul tells us, will be revealed. What does he
mean by this? That the rapture will
happen when the Antichrist is already
there, operating, but he doesn't have
complete authority. That is to say, the Antichrist will not be
a person who will
spontaneously appear in the seven
years of tribulation and great tribulation,
but rather a political leader, most
likely one who has already established a career. What will
happen is that
with the rapture, he will gain more
relevance, but there will be a manifestation of
this character called by Paul the
man of sin. Matthew 24
would describe many of the signs of
wars, rumors of wars; both plagues
are signs. It is not yet the end, because
the end would obviously come later. What
little choice on one knee,
and something singular, which is that Luke does not
Two things Jesus said is that
a time of persecution would also come.
Many ask if the church
will go through tribulation. We believe and
pray that this will not be the case. We will look at
some texts from that time. However, even if we do
not go through tribulation,
eschatologically speaking, there is a
warning of great
persecution of the church.
Now, the rapture of the church is the next
next
event described in texts such as the
First and Third Acts, chapter 4,
verses 13-11, which tells us that
Jesus Christ is coming in the clouds. There is a
call, a sound of trumpets. Do not
confuse this final trumpet that
Paul mentions with the trumpets mentioned in
Revelation. Do not confuse the
interpretation, or you will get
entangled in the biblical study. The
trumpet call is because in the
Old Testament, God commands the people to
make two silver trumpets, and
these trumpets had the purpose of
calling, of summoning the people. Some
argue that they should be summoned as an assembly to
receive instruction from God,
summoned for the... The battle now, that
final trumpet is the call of the
church to reunite with the Lord. The
call, the last trumpet, the dead
in Christ rise, the living ascend, we
ascend, and together, the dead risen
and the living ascending, we are all
transformed to be with the Lord
forever. On the subject of the
resurrection, in 1 Corinthians, end
6, especially verse 50 onward,
Paul describes a little
about this glorious event for which we
must be prepared. The blessed
hope of the believer is knowing that
Christ will return for His church. We believe in
it and proclaim it. Some
characteristics of the rapture, which
we will later contrast with the second
coming of Christ: 1. Jesus Christ does not touch the
earth. 2. It is silent and unexpected. 3. It
precedes the great tribulation. There are
the biblical texts that you can
consult by pausing this video.
video.
Chapter 4 of Revelation says something
unique. Remember that we are: 1. The
glory of Christ, the things you have seen;
2. and 3. The things that are the churches; and
chapter number 4. It begins with the
things that will happen after this. In
this chapter, in this verse, it says
that John saw an open door, heard
a voice that told him, "Come here, go up," and he went up
and instantly was seeing all
the things that were happening in heaven. There are
some who consider that chapter
4, verse 1, which would be
foreshadowing what is the rapture of the
church. While there is no
conclusive evidence to affirm it, we cannot outright dismiss the idea that
John, as a believer, is
allowed to ascend, to
participate as such in the moment, in a
prophetic way, to see what would
happen in heaven. I reiterate, there is no
very strong basis to confirm it, but from
the point of view of some believers, and
I invite you not to dismiss it
outright but to consider its
use in the rapture of the church, then there are
two events on earth and two events
in heaven. Speaking of heaven,
immediately after the rapture,
the judgment seat of Christ will occur, and this
will be a judgment, a judgment presided over by
our Lord Jesus. In which there will be an
evaluation of the works we have
done here on earth.
We will all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ to give an account of what we have done
in the flesh, on earth, according to whether
our works are good or bad.
The fire will be what approves us,
and it depends on how we live, how we
work, how we serve, and then there will be
reward or loss. The judgment
seat of Christ is indeed a judgment, but it is
not a judgment that appeals to salvation or
condemnation, no, but rather it appeals to the
evaluation of our lives.
We are certain that salvation is by
faith, by grace, through the work of Christ
Jesus on the cross of Calvary, not by
our works, so that no one may boast.
Then we arrive in heaven; we have been
saved by grace, but
even being saved, we will be evaluated on
the things we have done on earth,
and hoping to truly respond with
integrity to the Lord, saying, "We have been
faithful in the work you have commanded us to
do." This judgment seat of Christ is a place of
reward and recompense. Some
people talk about crowns,
they study
crowns in the Bible, and some They reach the
number seven, seven crowns that would be
awarded. Let's consider this the judgment seat
of Christ and even later the next
event at the wedding of the Lamb. So these are
elements that, more than something
literal, represent something that implies a
tribunal. A tribunal represents a
judgment, an evaluation. A
crown represents recognition, an
award. If some of us think of the
crowns of kings, some
also think of the crowns that
athletes received, one with a laurel wreath.
Now they make a crown, a crown of
righteousness, a crown of life,
incorruptible. These crowns... Now
the question for some is, well, how will
we receive them biblically? And there is the
description. However, I would invite you to
think about this: one, why seven colors? Would
we have seven heads? No,
definitely not to alternate them
every day.
What is the purpose of the crowns? I think
the intention is not literally to
speak of crowns, but to speak of that
recognition that God will give when He says, "Well done,
good. Though you were unfaithful over a few, you
were faithful over many; I will set you over many." But
also, in the heavenly worship, it says
that the beings who were around
the throne and the Lamb prostrated themselves before
the Lord and cast their crowns as a
sign of worship. Crowns of that
recognition we receive from God,
we will have to say to Him, just as the earth says, "
Not to us, Lord, but to You."
The crowns, in a way, are what we
will offer in heaven; they are what
we will give in gratitude to the Lord. It would be
shameful to present ourselves before God with a
clear conscience without any reward. And
please, I'm not thinking only of
silver ornaments; let's not think of that. Let's
offer to God all the work
we did, the lives we won for
Christ, the actions we carried out
here on earth that pleased and gave
glory to the Lord. This will be what
we present before the throne of God.
In the judgment of
Christ, it will be not salvation or
condemnation, but an evaluation and
recognition. The second wedding of the
Lamb is again a
metaphor, a symbol. Now, what is a
wedding? It's a feast, a celebration, a
joy, a jubilation. What about those of us
who have come before the
presence of the Lord? There, I invite you to
make a contrast between
Revelation 3:20 and Revelation chapter
19, because they are the two scenes
referred to in the book of Revelation.
In the first of them... Christ is at the
door, at the door of the church of the
person's heart, calling, calling, and
waiting for someone to hear and open the
door so He can come in to dine with Him and we
can have a time of communion. It's
essentially a message for the church,
a church that has strayed, a church
that has removed Jesus from the scene. And Jesus
is saying, "I want to be back in,
I want to be the center again."
But it's also, so to speak,
Christ living in our lives,
coming to have communion with us and
to bring us an invitation, the
invitation to participate in the wedding feast of
the Lamb. Whoever opens the door and
allows Christ to enter their heart
will then enjoy that scene here
on earth, but will also enjoy the
wedding feast of the Lamb in heaven.
But whoever does not open the door to Christ,
then sadly, will not participate in
the wedding feast of the Lamb. There is a symbol, there is a
Revelation, two brothers: "And let
us rejoice, for the wedding has come,
and his bride has been given
fine linen to wear, bright and clean,
for the righteous acts
of the saints." The celebration is all
happening according to our
perception, our consideration, in that
time which will be about seven years.
Remember that in heaven there is no time, just in case,
but here on earth it would be
about seven years in what we
traditionally call tribulation and great
tribulation. Events on earth,
then, after the rapture, which we
mark the 22 phenomena, separating three and a half
years, three and a half years to
speak of the middle of the week, the
tribulation, which we will see as an apparent event,
apparent event,
and the great tribulation where
all the judgments
described in Revelation would be unleashed, on the day
of Jehovah's wrath, the day of the Lord's wrath.
Ultimately, that is the perception,
ultimately, and in some way, of the bulk of the
content of the book of Revelation,
that day of God's wrath. Now,
the important observations here, the
first of which is that eschatology is
highly speculative. What does
this mean? I think of Paul's words: in
part we know, in part we prophesy, at
some point saying, "Now we see
veiled, darkly, but in that day
we shall see face to face, we shall see clearly."
It is a reality, it is the Thinking about
future events, the
Bible doesn't really speak clearly or
extensively about them. It defines
what will happen, but it doesn't define
how or when. I repeat, the Bible
defines what will happen, but it doesn't clearly tell us
how or when. These are things that
belong to God's sovereignty. Now,
it's speculative because we
try to interpret and give an
opinion or perspective about it.
But ultimately, the day will come
when we will find out. We didn't just understand; we
weren't right about that interpretation.
When speaking of the eschatology of
Revelation, there is generally a debate
between two or three groups, and
traditionally a
timeline is drawn, mentioning three groups: one,
the church that would be raptured and would be
in heaven during this
seven-year period; two, the Jews who would be
here on earth, who would be
God's people here on earth; and
three, the non-believers, the
Gentiles, who ultimately, with the
second coming of Christ, would be
dead and condemned. That would be
the three groups. However,
I would like to invite you to remember this: in the
New Testament, in the theology of the
New Testament, it says that Gentiles and
Jews, who were enemies, Christ
broke the barrier of separation that
existed between them and made one people from the two,
and then there is no longer Jew
nor people, and he needs to give a woman.
Christ is all in all and we are one in
him. Therefore, in the New Testament,
this division of Israel,
Gentiles, and church is not made, but essentially,
the description of two
groups is given: the people of believers, who
literally, but above
all spiritually, are children of
Abraham, the true Israel, those who have
believed in Christ; and the unbelievers. Yes,
Paul often speaks of Gentiles and Gentiles. Tiles
referring to Christians, if then
the division of the
church into Israel and Gentiles cannot always be made, but it is
more appropriate to speak of believers and non-
believers regardless of
nationality. However, for
practical purposes, in eschatology,
that division of the church into Jews in heaven
and non-believers or the
condemned dead on earth would be because ultimately, and it is
evident, there is a special covenant that
God makes with the Jewish people.
Third observation: what is the eagerness of
many to know in detail the
events of God's judgment? It is somewhat
uncomfortable. That person
who wants to say, "Come on, I want to know
what the judgment is like, how He is going to kill us and
dismember us, behead us," that was
the thought
of some when reading Revelation: "Come on,
I want to see how He is going to destroy us and burn
us," or if they have already done so. I think it is
not a correct attitude that we should
have as Christians. Now, if
we understand the word and if we believe this
message, it is seven years in which the
church will not exist, you as part of
the church will not be on earth.
Therefore, ultimately, I don't want to
know What is the mark of the beast? I do
n't want to know because I
want to be in heaven. Ultimately, I don't want to
know. And if the seven seals,
trumpets, and cups are sequential or
something like a spiral, I don't want to
know that. You know why? Because I want to
be in inner unity with God.
Ultimately, when Christ resurrected
for 40 days, Acts chapter 1 tells the
disciples, with undeniable proof of
his resurrection and the kingdom, that it is
time to ask about eschatology. Will
Israel be restored to the kingdom in this
time? And what did Jesus say? "That one will no longer be
eight. Forgive me, it is not for you to have
time for the reasons that the Father
possesses. In his sole purpose,
there are things that belong to God, and the
call of the Apocalypse is not a morbid, unhealthy
desire to know
how people die, but rather it should
call us to holiness. And if
we truly believe what the Bible says and what
the Apocalypse says, we wouldn't be
looking for the meaning of every detail;
we would be seeking to preach the gospel.
Christ's purpose is for people to be saved,
warned, and not suffer this condemnation.
That's the central point. It's not up to
us to know the details, nor is it up
to us to know the times. These are the
reasons the Father placed in His sole
authority. It's up to us to receive
power with the Holy Spirit, to receive the Holy
Spirit, and to be witnesses to the
ends of the earth, to
preach the word, to urge
in season and out of season. That is
our calling. The calling for us is
not to fully understand
Revelation. Our calling is to understand
that Christ is coming soon and that there is a
final judgment. It's important to understand that.
Now, having said that, let's enter into
this line of seven seals, seven
trumpets, and seven bowls. I think I'm going to give
a very general description.
Revelation 6 speaks to us of the seven
seals. For those who are not familiar with
this term, look at the image at
the bottom. It's a scroll, yes, with a
written text, and it was sealed.
A little wax was placed there,
and the king then pressed the
seal of his ring there so that no one
could undo the scroll and read
it. That he was there is the figure, the
metaphor used there where it says there is
a scroll and it asks who is
worthy, who is worthy to open the book,
to undo its seals. And John says that there was no
one worthy, neither in heaven nor on
earth nor under the earth, and he wept a great deal because of
this. But the angel tells him, "Do not be afraid,
afraid,
for the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the
Root of the lineage of birds, has triumphed and is
worthy to undo the seals." And it is here that
our Lord Jesus Christ appears
as a slain Lamb, and all of heaven
and all creatures prostrate themselves and
celebrate, saying, "You are worthy, Lord, to
open the seals, for you were slain,
and with your blood you have redeemed us from every
tribe, people, language, and nation." Again, the
emphasis is not on the judgments; the emphasis
is on Christ and the worship. There is the
description of these years, the capital, the
first seal, a white horse with a bow
and crown, which some have thought is
Christ. No, it is not Christ. It is considered rather to be
a false religiosity of
that period, when the Antichrist was last,
because it is a white horse.
It would appear to be for holiness, but it really
has a bow to conquer. Second seal: a
red horse with a sword, which would imply
war. Third: a
black horse with scales, which represents
scarcity. Fourth: the pale horse, which
represents death. Fifth: the
souls of those beheaded under the altar.
At one point, this was mentioned. Sixth: an
earthquake and signs in heaven and on
earth. And the seventh seal will give space
for the reading of the announcement of the seven
trumpets, which will be in chapter eight.
eight.
The souls of those beheaded. It is important to keep
this in mind, with what
chapter seven says. Between the sixth and
seventh seals, this apocalypse
7 appears, which saw the 144,000 sealed. These
144,000 are not depicted in heaven but
are on earth, and Jehovah's Witnesses
have said that they will be some of
them. There is confusion about whether they
represent the church, but literally,
the text says that they are part of the people
of Israel and mentions the tribes of
Israel specifically. Now, it is striking that
you can study this. It does not
include Ephraim and Adam, but it does include
Joseph and... Youngsters, you know that the twelve
tribes of Israel were composed of
the sons of Jacob, but also the
two sons of Joseph, and ultimately it would be a
count of thirteen tribes where
Joseph is not counted as such, but rather Ephraim and Adam,
his six sons, and generally the
tribe of the priestly life is not taken into account
at the
time of the count, therefore it would be
the twelve tribes plus...
and now in this song of 144,000,
twelve tribes are mentioned, twelve are mentioned
including them and excluding
Ephraim and Adam. Now in chapter seven,
verse 9-17, it speaks of a multitude
worshiping the Lord. There is debate, there is
conflict about who this
multitude is: are they those who have come out of the
tribulation? Are they the souls of the
martyrs of the fifth seal? Are they the
dead in the tribulation? Is it the church?
There are many debates. You could later
consult about these positions. On
many occasions, it appeals to the
church that has been treated, those of us who have been
redeemed, which would be
referring to Revelation chapter
number... Seven is very likely in the
traditional view; however, some
consider that it may have to do with
the souls of the martyrs
in the question, but
I reiterate the traditional view that
corresponds to the church.
You can delve deeper into this
now in chapters 8 through 11. Then
the seventh seal would unleash the seven
trumpets. Chapters 8 through 11 would describe them.
First trumpet: a third
third
of the earth will be destroyed, a third
of the earth will give rise to crops and
vegetation. Second trumpet: a mountain
of fire thrown into the sea; a third
of the fish of the sea will die; a third of the
living creatures in the sea will erupt.
Third trumpet: a fiery star, an
asteroid, a meteorite
that falls, and a third of the
fresh waters will become bitter.
Fourth trumpet: a
third of the stars will be darkened. Is this literal? Is it metaphorical?
metaphorical?
Is it a decrease in the brightness of the
stars, or is it that the environment, the
atmosphere, is polluted and cannot be
seen? It is a question that is asked and does
n't really have a
clear answer in this Right now, we're at the
fourth and fifth trumpets. There's a
star, a star that falls to
Earth, and a first trumpet is announced. There's a
great pain here on Earth because,
because immediately afterward, at the sixth
trumpet, the horsemen are highlighted.
Neutral point, remember your four horsemen
that were in the paintings. They
are unleashed now. In the first trumpet,
the princes are shown. They demonstrate,
but now the seven trumpets are unleashed.
Therefore, all these phenomena,
although we are living through them, and they are
signs, mean that in this
seven-year time of judgment, they will
multiply, they will be intensified. At the
seventh trumpet, there will be worship of
God and the announcement of God's wrath.
You see marked things that are described
in the book of Revelation.
Now, regarding these trumpets, the fifth
and sixth trumpets, there are things we could
consider. The fifth trumpet says
that the abyss of the vine is opened. The
fifth trumpet,
now, says that there are armies. There is
a description, and you see two images. It says
that there is an angel who commands
those beings who come out of the abyss. If
that... The commander is called to valor
or support that would produce destruction,
and the final images of that
army are the bizarre image of a
human face with wings, but it has a
scorpion-like tail. Many
consider that this refers
perhaps to war tanks or, even better,
fighter jets in the midst of battle.
But there is the debate as to whether this is something
spiritual and refers to an increase
in demonic activity coming from the
abyss. One or the other, both: it is something
spiritual, it is something warlike without armies,
or ultimately it is a mixture of both
here on earth. That would
ultimately happen at the fifth trumpet, although it is not
entirely clear to us whether it is
something spiritual or physical. What
happens there at the sixth trumpet says
that the Euphrates
is brought out, it is announced, and it is something that will
also happen at the bowls of Ira.
Immediately after the sixth
trumpet, with the seventh trumpet, the
Bible says that John always hears thunder
that emits its sound and that there is an
announcement of judgment also for this
period, but when John He's not going to write
what the seven mourners announced; he's not
allowed, he's not instructed. In other words, the Book of
Revelation is
incomplete, and it's
intentionally incomplete by God Himself. If it's not
that John forgot to describe something, it's
that God told him, "No, you're not
going to write that part." There are things that are said in
Revelation, things that aren't said, but what
is said has the purpose of
glorifying Christ, of comforting the
people who are in tribulation, of
encouraging us to open that entity, and of
warning us to preach the word.
In chapter 11, right there in
that same context, it speaks of two witnesses,
the witnesses who will be here on
earth and who will preach. And they are witnesses of
whom? Of Christ, God, of His work. But it wasn't
essentially stated who these
two witnesses are. They are two movements, two
groups of people who will ultimately have
powerful ministries. At
that time, we generally
interpret it as two people, not
groups of people, but two
people. Now, who will those two people be?
Two people who will live in that
time, and I... It will use, as it were, the
ancient prophets of antiquity,
or it refers literally to
biblical figures. Traditionally, three names
that come up there are Moses, Elijah, and Enoch. The
strong reason within is because in their
time, each of them very likely did
not die. Let me explain: with
him, it tells us that he was taken by God
to know death. If we say
the Bible says that men are
destined to die and after the
judgment, then God had
placed them to settle the apocalypse, so that he would be a
witness to Him, die, and
ascend. In the interpretation of
some, Elijah is considered because
Elijah was transported in a whirlwind
when he was separated from the Law with
chariots of fire, and so he does not know a
garden, at least not recorded.
So some consider again
that Elijah is the one who takes him, but it is
noteworthy and Moses is included, for
example, because of the transfiguration where
Moses and Elijah appear, representing
the Law and the prophets. Moses, because
ultimately we could say they
literally followed Joseph. The book of Joshua
says, "My servant Moses..." He has died,
God tells me, but ultimately no one knew where
Moses' body was buried. So some speculate that
God actually took Moses, didn't
allow him to die at that moment, but
took him to the time of
tribulation so that they could be witnesses of the
Lord. These conjectures,
mainly about Moses for one hundred and some days, are based on the
prophecies or characteristics of
these men who are said to have the
ability to strike the
earth with various plagues, like Moses, and to
pray for fire to come down from heaven,
and so it happens. So
these two are considered to be one of two things: either they are
prophets or they are people with a
ministry similar to that in Acts.
Furthermore, from this speculation, there will be
two witnesses who will die, they will be
publicly exposed, but the Lord will
rapture them and take them to heaven. In
this context, ultimately, there is something sad:
that afterward, sadly, people don't
want to repent, not even with
these testimonies. From then on, well, that will be
for your personal study.
Here is an interesting mention of
Jerusalem in chapter 11,
verses 11, Jerusalem is mentioned, but it doesn't
refer to it. Jerusalem says that these two
witnesses will be killed and
their bodies displayed publicly in the street
for three days in the city
where our Lord died.
Jerusalem, it would say, but in a
spiritual sense, it's Sodom and Egypt. This would show that
the degradation and
evil have reached even the
holy city, the holy city of God. The
aberrations have reached such a point that,
ultimately, that same city of God,
called in the Bible, would be considered
Now, after the trumpets and when
the thunder sounds, there are some
intermediate events before
the seven bowls of wrath come. One of them is
described in chapter 12, in the
description of the woman and the dragon. A
woman who is about to have children.
That child is born to God, but
this woman is described with the sun, the moon, and some
stars. Then there has been the
question of what it means. What is
interpreted? Israel says, "It's us, we are
the Israelites." Who will that child be? The
Messiah we would have, Christ, even though
the Jews don't accept Christopher as the Messiah,
and especially the... The Church in general has
said it's the Church, if
specific experiences, the Catholic Church
has sometimes compared Mary, the mother of Jesus
here on earth, to this woman, and that's why
when in Catholic iconography,
Mary is depicted, she
appears with stars around her, yes,
because they consider that this figure
refers to the yellow one. We
traditionally consider that it refers to Israel,
Israel, the people of God, would be that woman who is
who is
fighting against the woman
to destroy her,
and from there Christ was born, the
Savior was born, and Michael fights against the dragon.
There, in that scene of the dragon fighting
against this woman, appears the Archangel
Michael, the only archangel described in the
Bible who fights against the dragon, and the
dragon is expelled from heaven, and there is
a song, a celebration: "Rejoice, you
heavens, you who dwell there, for
the accuser has been expelled!" He is the accuser of
our brothers and sisters. But woe to the
inhabitants of the earth, because the dragon is no longer
in heaven, he is no longer
accusing, but will be on earth.
And woe to the inhabitants of the earth, the
third "woe," because the enemy is coming now. It is to
that question, ceased when
This scene is fulfilled by some who believe
that the expulsion of Satan from heaven was
seen in this theory of the great leap in
Genesis 1, chapter 1, verse 2,
when it says, "In the beginning, God created
the heavens and the earth." The second verse says, "
And the earth was formless and empty."
Some believe that between verses 11 and 12,
the devil was expelled from heaven and that is why he
destroyed the earth. I would have
many objections to that point of view,
but it will not be a topic of study for now.
Others believe that it is an event that
happens when Jesus is here on
earth, either at his death or before,
when he sends 70 people to
preach the word (Luke 10). When he
sends them out and they return
joyfully proclaiming the gospel, Jesus says, "I saw Satan
fall like lightning from heaven." This would have
happened at that moment, or will it happen in
these seven years of tribulation and great
tribulation? That this accuser of us
believers, who is in heaven, would be like saying, "He
is in heaven, making
a reference to being close to God
to accuse." And remember that
Satan has two
essentially functions: number one, to tempt; number two, to...
Two things, that's essentially the function of
Satan. Now, I've discussed the past, present, and
future. This topic remains to be explored further.
The dragon fights
against the woman and her son, but they are unsuccessful. He cannot
defeat them. So he leaves
and wages war against them. He also pronounces
judgment on the woman, saying,
literally, "Those who keep
God's commandments and hold to the
testimony of Jesus Christ." This
knowledge corresponds to believers, to
Christians of all backgrounds,
regarding their intermediate events.
Now, in chapter 13, there is a
description of the two beasts, two beings,
one that comes from the sea and the other
from the land.
We interpret this, according to the
text, as corresponding to the Antichrist and the False Prophet. The
Antichrist is a political leader, the False
Prophet a religious leader.
They worship the dragon together. The Antichrist is
represented by a beast. He is killed and
brought back to life. They make an image of him,
and that image comes to life. This figure appears here. Some have
