0:07 welcome to back to the Bible radio
0:09 featuring best-selling author and
0:11 internationally known Bible teacher
0:14 Warren where's be are you rejoicing in
0:16 your ministry today I don't know what
0:19 your ministry is but are you rejoicing
0:21 in it are you enjoying your ministry or
0:25 enduring your ministry well the Lord
0:26 Jesus knows because he can see your
0:29 heart and you know and before long
0:32 everybody will know because we cannot
0:35 hide it in Philippians were looking at
0:37 the joy of ministry and in chapter one
0:40 we're focusing on the joy of the message
0:43 of our ministry Jesus Christ and the
0:47 gospel and Paul applies this gospel to
0:49 three different groups of people the
0:51 inner circle of the Saints verses 3
0:54 through 11 the fellowship in the gospel
0:58 verse 5 he gives thanks with joy for
1:00 your fellowship in the gospel from the
1:02 first day until now
1:06 then verse 12 down through verse 26 he
1:08 talks about the furtherance of the
1:11 gospel but I would you should understand
1:13 brethren that the things which happened
1:15 unto me have fallen out rather unto the
1:17 furtherance of the gospel
1:19 now he's applying the gospel not to the
1:23 believers but to the unbelievers chapter
1:26 1 verses 12 through 26 then in verse 27
1:29 down through verse 30 he'll be talking
1:31 about how the gospel applies to our
1:34 adversaries those who oppose the work of
1:37 the Lord you see if you go through life
1:39 thinking only about yourself you're
1:41 going to be miserable but if you go
1:44 through life ministering because you are
1:46 concerned about Christ and the gospel
1:49 then you are going to be happy you're
1:51 going to have joy we have the most
1:53 joyful message in all the world to
1:56 present good tidings of great joy which
2:00 shall be unto all people for Jesus
2:03 Christ the Savior has died for the sins
2:05 of the world the father sent the son to
2:08 be the Saviour of the world now is that
2:11 why you're living are you living to get
2:14 this message out now if you are you'll
2:16 be a happy person if you have a single mind
2:17 mind
2:21 for Christ and the gospel then you're
2:23 going to have Christian joy you're going
2:25 to relate as you should to God's people
2:28 and you're going to relate as you should
2:31 to the unsaved Paul's great desire was
2:34 to preach the gospel at Rome when he
2:36 wrote the letter to the Romans he said
2:39 so in chapter 1 verse 15 that he had a
2:42 great desire to come to Rome to preach
2:44 the gospel well he did come to Rome but
2:47 not as a preacher but as a prisoner you
2:50 remember in Acts chapter 27 you have
2:52 that awful shipwreck described and Paul
2:56 finally it does arrive at Rome and then
2:59 some difficulties appear even in Rome he
3:02 has some needs the Philippian church
3:05 sent him some material help to assist
3:08 him in his ministry that's why he wrote
3:09 this letter that we call Philippians
3:12 well I should have you understand he
3:14 wrote to them to the things which
3:16 happened unto me have fallen out they
3:19 have worked out rather unto the
3:23 furtherance of the gospel this word
3:26 furtherance means pioneer advance it
3:29 means to move forward in spite of
3:31 obstructions and difficulties it's the
3:33 word that was used for that part of the
3:36 army that went on ahead cleared away all
3:39 the debris got rid of all that was
3:41 standing in the way of the march of the
3:43 army you know the devil puts roadblocks
3:47 in our way right now you may say well
3:49 brother where's be I'm facing that
3:51 roadblock here we are in our church or
3:54 our mission station or our Sunday School
3:57 class or our home and we're trying to
3:59 move forward and serve the Lord and
4:02 right away we've hit a roadblock we've
4:04 hit a blank wall we're on a dead-end
4:07 street oh no you're not when you're
4:09 living to promote Christ and the gospel
4:11 to spread the good news of the gospel
4:14 there is no such thing as a dead-end
4:18 street or a wall or a roadblock along
4:21 your path you see God wants us to take
4:22 the gospel out into New Territories
4:25 that's the problem in so many churches
4:28 we keep sowing the same seed on the same
4:31 soil we keep fishing in the same pond
4:33 but God wants us to take the gospel into
4:37 new territory furtherance the Pioneer
4:39 advance God is saying let's move into
4:42 some new territory are there areas in
4:45 your town or city that have never been
4:47 touched by the gospel how are you gonna
4:49 get the gospel in there well the Apostle
4:52 Paul had three very wonderful tools that
4:56 God gave him to get the gospel out to
4:59 areas where it had never reached verses
5:03 12 through 14 his chains so that my
5:06 bonds in Christ are manifest and people
5:10 are talking about this my chains because
5:13 of his chains Christ was known verses 12
5:18 through 14 then verses 15 through 19 his
5:20 critics Oh Paul had some critics there
5:22 in the city of Rome there were some who
5:24 were not preaching the way they should
5:27 preach they were preaching out of
5:29 contention and division and dissension
5:32 but Paul tells us in verses 15 through
5:35 19 that because of his critics Christ is
5:38 preached notice now because of my chains
5:41 Christ is known because of my critics
5:44 Christ is preached and verses 20 through
5:48 26 because of my crisis Christ is
5:50 magnified what was his crisis he might
5:51 be killed
5:54 he says for to me to live is Christ to
5:57 die is gain his great concern was not
6:00 just to spare his life but to use his
6:02 life now get a hold of these three tools
6:05 his chains Christ is known verses 12
6:09 through 14 his critics Christ is
6:12 preached verses 15 through 19
6:16 his crisis he might be killed Christ
6:21 is magnified verses 20 through 26
6:23 now today let's look at these first
6:27 tools his chains and his critics and
6:30 let's find out how you and I in spite of
6:32 the obstacles the problems the
6:35 difficulties that we face can promote
6:38 the gospel spread the gospel get the
6:40 Word of God out where it has not reached
6:45 before verses 12 through 14 he taught
6:47 about his chains but I would you should
6:49 understand brethren that the things
6:51 which happened unto me have fallen out
6:53 rather under the furtherance of the
6:57 gospel so that my bonds in Christ are
7:00 manifest in all the palace and in all
7:03 other places and many of the Brethren in
7:06 the Lord becoming confident by my bonds
7:09 are much more bold to speak the word
7:11 without fear
7:14 Paul was chained to a Roman soldier and
7:17 they probably changed that guard about
7:20 Oh every six hours or so now Paul is
7:22 telling us that when he was chained to
7:24 this Roman soldier it gave him
7:27 opportunity to witness imagine being
7:29 chained to the Apostle Paul who said
7:32 pray without ceasing imagine being
7:34 chained to the Apostle Paul who wrote
7:37 the love of Christ constrains me that
7:39 poor soldier had to listen to the gospel
7:41 had to listen to Paul dictating letters
7:45 praying and of course witnessing God
7:48 uses strange tools doesn't he he used
7:52 Moses rod he used Gideon's pitchers he
7:54 used David's slang he used the little
7:58 boys loaves and fish and he used Paul's
8:01 chains now Paul did not consider himself
8:04 chained by Rome he said my bonds in
8:07 Christ by the way all of us have chains
8:09 of one kind or another you're listening
8:11 to me today and you say oh I'm chained
8:13 to my home I have these little children
8:17 to take care of or I'm chained in my job
8:19 oh how I wish I could do more for the
8:22 Lord or I'm chained by some handicap you
8:25 might be in bed you might be flat on
8:27 your back right now and you say oh why
8:29 has the Lord permitted me to be chained
8:32 would you notice now the Apostle Paul
8:35 said these chains are accomplishing
8:37 wonderful things for the gospel now if
8:39 you're thinking only about your own
8:42 comfort and your own concern then chains
8:45 are problem but if you're thinking about
8:47 spreading the gospel then chains become
8:50 an opportunity number one those chains
8:53 gave him contact with the Lost number
8:56 two those chains gave courage to the saved
8:57 saved
9:00 contact with the lost here were these
9:02 Romans soldiers and he's talking here
9:06 about the elite Praetorian Guard he's
9:09 talking about those 9,000 elite soldiers
9:12 that were the guardians of the emperor
9:15 in Rome now if Paul had come to Rome and
9:17 tried to get an invitation to preach to
9:19 this crowd in their barracks they would
9:22 never have let him in but now one by one
9:25 these soldiers were hearing the gospel
9:28 because they were chained to the Apostle
9:31 Paul you say Here I am in a hospital bed
9:34 I'm chained I can't get out oh what an
9:36 opportunity it will give to you to share
9:41 the gospel in love and in patience I had
9:43 a friend who was in the hospital for surgery
9:44 surgery
9:46 and as the nurses and doctors came in
9:48 and out of his room he witnessed to them
9:50 and before he left that hospital II had
9:52 the joy of seeing a couple of those
9:55 nurses come to Jesus Christ in fact the
9:57 nurses were warning each other watch out
9:59 when you go into that room there's a
10:01 preacher in there but he was using that
10:04 opportunity to win people to Jesus
10:07 Christ the Apostle Paul was chained to a
10:10 Roman soldier 24 hours a day for
10:12 different soldiers every day and over
10:15 the space of those months and years Paul
10:18 was witnessing to them and many of them
10:21 found Christ as their Savior I remember
10:25 being called to rush to the hospital to
10:26 see one of our men I was pastoring a
10:28 church at the time one of our men had
10:30 been rushed to the hospital and they
10:31 didn't know what was wrong with him and
10:33 they called me up and said pastor you
10:35 come right now and I got in the car and
10:38 drove down to the hospital and I went
10:40 into the ward where they had put my
10:43 friend and there he was quite ill and I
10:45 talked with him and we prayed together
10:47 and I thought to myself why would this
10:50 godly man be in the hospital as I was
10:52 leaving the ward a woman stopped me and
10:54 said oh brother where's me I'm glad
10:56 you're here my husband was rushed in I
10:58 haven't had a chance to call you he's
11:00 dying would you come to see him and
11:03 before I left that ward I had the
11:06 privilege of leading that man to Jesus
11:08 Christ the next day the other fella was
11:09 released that ever didn't know what was
11:10 wrong with him
11:12 know why he was in that hospital to get
11:15 that preacher down there to lead that
11:18 dying man to Jesus Christ now my friend
11:21 you have chains you are chained to your
11:23 children to your home to your job to
11:25 your wheelchair you say I can't serve
11:27 the Lord you can have the joy of
11:30 ministry if you'll just let God use
11:33 those chains for the furtherance of the gospel
11:39 now in verses 15 through 19 Paul had his
11:42 critics we all have our critics I
11:45 receive mail from people who criticize
11:47 some of the things we say and do or we
11:50 don't say and do and I've been a pastor
11:51 of three different churches I know what
11:54 criticism is like I don't mind honest
11:56 loving criticism it can help me but all
11:59 that malicious divisive criticism that
12:01 really hurts Paul talks about that in
12:05 verses 15 through 19 some indeed preach
12:07 Christ even of envy and strife and some
12:10 also of good will the one preach Christ
12:15 of contention rivalry a competition not
12:17 sincerely supposing to add affliction to
12:20 my bonds but the other of love knowing
12:22 that I am set for the defense of the
12:24 gospel at words set means I'm on duty
12:27 I'm not a prisoner I'm a soldier I'm on
12:30 duty here to defend the gospel what then
12:33 notwithstanding in every way whether in
12:36 pretence or in truth Christ is preached
12:40 and in that I do rejoice yay and I will
12:43 rejoice for I know that this shall turn
12:44 to my salvation
12:46 meaning deliverance from prison through
12:49 your prayer and the supply of the spirit
12:52 of Jesus Christ you see in Rome the
12:54 church was divided there was a three-way
12:57 division here with regard to the Apostle
12:59 Paul number one there was a small group
13:02 of people who were silent they weren't
13:03 saying anything they said we'd want to
13:06 get involved then the majority was
13:08 speaking out and witnessing for the Lord
13:11 but the majority was divided into two
13:14 groups there was one group that was out
13:17 to sincerely preach the gospel and win
13:19 people to Christ the other group was
13:22 preaching the gospel to create problems
13:24 for Paul isn't it too bad we have
13:27 competition and abrasion in the work of
13:30 the Lord isn't it too bad that that
13:33 there are those who are standing away
13:36 from us and criticizing isn't it too bad
13:38 that there are people who can actually
13:41 preach gospel sermons but do it in such
13:44 a spirit that they create dissension and
13:47 division now how should we respond to
13:50 this Paul had to respond to
13:52 his critics and what they were doing was
13:54 cutting much deeper than his chains were
13:58 cutting they were insincere they were
14:00 using the gospel to further their own
14:02 desires and their own purposes they were
14:05 using it in a political sense and they
14:07 were hurting others they were unloving
14:10 they were making it hard on Paul are you
14:12 making it difficult for other people to
14:14 minister I have a friend who prays every
14:17 day Lord helped me today not to add to
14:19 anybody's burdens that's a good prayer
14:23 they were divisive they probably envied
14:25 Paul and they were out trying to cause
14:27 contention now here were these three
14:28 groups of people
14:32 the silent minority the majority
14:34 witnessing for Christ part of them out
14:38 of love for Paul part of them trying to
14:40 create problems for Paul and what did
14:42 Paul do he said I'm just glad they're
14:44 preaching the gospel you know there are
14:46 some servants of God whose methods I
14:49 disagree with their motives I sometimes
14:51 question I don't want to judge them only
14:53 God knows their heart but you know I'm
14:56 glad that they're preaching Christ I'm
14:58 glad that somehow through their voice
15:00 through their lives Christ is being
15:02 preached we don't always agree on
15:04 everything but we do agree on the gospel
15:06 they were really only hurting themselves
15:09 Paul was out trying to establish the
15:11 gospel so that these people could
15:13 continue to minister you'd think that
15:16 they would have encouraged Paul how did
15:18 Paul handle his critics he prayed verse
15:20 19 I know that this shall turn to my
15:23 salvation through your prayer and the
15:26 supply of the spirit of Jesus Christ God
15:28 provides through the Holy Spirit and
15:31 prayer all that we need to put up with
15:33 our critics now you may be being
15:35 criticized right now right now preach
15:37 your friend you may be going through a
15:39 rough time the board may have turned the
15:41 heat on I don't know or perhaps it's the
15:43 other way around perhaps you're a church
15:44 remember and all your preacher does is
15:46 get into the pulpit and criticize you
15:49 well I want you to know this God can use
15:52 even our critics even those who are
15:55 creating problems for us to further the
15:57 gospel you see if you and I are
15:59 concerned about the furtherance of the
16:01 gospel we aren't going to worry about
16:03 our chains we're going to use those
16:07 chains to get contact with the lost and
16:09 to give courage to other people to
16:11 witness we aren't going to worry about
16:13 our critics we're gonna let God take
16:15 care of them we're gonna pray and do the
16:18 job God wants us to do and we're going
16:20 to preach Christ and we're going to
16:23 rejoice that others are preaching Jesus
16:27 Christ now in verses 20 through 26
16:30 the Apostle Paul deals with the third
16:32 tool that God used to advance the gospel
16:35 namely his crisis
16:37 what was his crisis there was the
16:39 possibility that he might die you see
16:42 Paul was in Rome technically to defend
16:46 the gospel of Jesus Christ in the early
16:49 stages of the church the Roman Empire
16:52 looked upon Christianity as another kind
16:55 of Judaism now the Jewish religion was
16:57 an accepted approved religion in the
16:59 Roman Empire the Romans did not
17:02 persecute the Jews because they were not
17:04 bowing down to Caesar well the first
17:07 Christians were Jewish people and many
17:09 of the first churches were came out of
17:12 synagogues and the Jewish believers used
17:14 to meet in the temple and so in the
17:17 early stages of Christianity the Roman
17:20 Empire looked upon the Christian Church
17:25 as one other group in Judaism then when
17:27 the Jews began to persecute the
17:29 Christians the Romans woke up to the
17:31 fact that there was a difference and
17:33 they found out that the Christian faith
17:37 was not Judaism continued rather it was
17:39 the fulfillment of Judaism
17:42 now this meant that the Christian faith
17:46 was on trial and Paul was in Rome hoping
17:49 to be able to get for the church the
17:51 same kind of recognition that Judaism
17:54 had in other words he wanted the Roman
17:57 Empire to accept the Christian faith
17:59 because of the Christians could not
18:02 stand at an altar dedicated to a pagan
18:05 god and say Caesar is Lord their
18:08 confession was Jesus Christ is Lord and
18:12 Paul was willing to lay down his life if
18:15 necessary in order to give recognition
18:17 to the church throughout the
18:20 an empire and so this is his crisis
18:24 verses 20 through 26 of Philippians 1
18:27 according to my earnest expectation and
18:29 my hope that in nothing I shall be
18:32 ashamed but that with all boldness as
18:36 always so now also Christ shall be
18:38 magnified in my body whether it be by
18:41 life or by death for to me to live is
18:45 Christ and to die is gain but if I live
18:47 in the flesh that is in my human body
18:50 this is the fruit of my labor
18:53 yet what I shall choose I know not for I
18:57 am in a strait between two having a
18:59 desire to depart and to be with Christ
19:02 which is far better nevertheless to
19:05 abide in the flesh is more needful for
19:08 you and having this confidence I know
19:11 that I shall abide and continue with you
19:13 all for your furtherance and joy of
19:17 faith that your rejoicing may be more
19:20 abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my
19:23 coming to you again now there was a
19:26 possibility that Paul might die there
19:29 had been a preliminary trial and Paul
19:31 had apparently come off from that trial
19:34 in pretty good condition they must have
19:36 made some decisions in his favor now
19:39 there was going to be another trial and
19:42 Paul is facing this with great boldness
19:45 his great concern Christ is magnified
19:48 notice the sequence now in the
19:50 furtherance of the gospel God used his
19:54 chains Christ is known God used his
19:57 critics Christ is preached and God used
20:02 his crisis Christ is magnified now we
20:04 have two instruments today that magnify
20:06 we have telescopes and we have
20:09 microscopes a telescope is an instrument
20:11 that takes distant things and brings
20:14 them close a microscope is an instrument
20:16 that takes little things and makes them
20:19 look big when the world looks at Jesus
20:22 Christ he seems very far away you stop
20:25 the average person on the street and you
20:28 say excuse me ma'am excuse me sir where
20:31 do you think Jesus is oh yea Jesus well he
20:31 he
20:33 is a character in history some 2000
20:36 years ago wasn't he born in Bethlehem as
20:38 far as the average person is concerned
20:41 Jesus Christ is very far away now you
20:44 and I are to be God's telescopes to
20:47 bring him near and as far as the world
20:49 is concerned Jesus Christ is very small
20:52 who is Jesus Christ compared to some
20:56 great athletic star or some great movie
20:59 star or some politician the average
21:01 person in the world today would not
21:03 think about Jesus Christ let alone
21:05 mention his name unless it be in vain
21:09 you and I are to be God's microscopes to
21:12 make Jesus Christ very big you see Paul
21:14 said I am NOT in Rome to make Paul big
21:17 I'm not here to magnify Paul now if
21:19 you're out to magnify yourself you'll
21:22 have no joy in your ministry you may
21:25 have praise you may have a fan club but
21:27 you won't have any joy if you want joy
21:30 in your ministry you make Christ known
21:33 and you preach Christ and you magnify
21:36 Christ well the test of our lives is
21:38 Philippians 1:21 for to me to live is
21:41 what for to me to live is money to die
21:43 is to lose it all for to me to live is
21:45 the build a kingdom to die is to be
21:48 forgotten for to me to live is power or
21:50 fame to die is to lose every bit of it
21:53 but when you can say for to me to live
21:56 is Christ then you can say to die is
22:01 gain yes God is able to use a crisis to
22:04 magnify Jesus Christ you may be in a
22:07 crisis today just say with Paul I want
22:09 Christ to be magnified whether it's by
22:12 life or by death I want him to receive
22:14 all of the glory [Music]
