0:03 hey everybody welcome to this b1 English
0:05 listening practice video you can use
0:06 this video to practice your listening
0:10 and comprehension as I speak you ready
0:12 so today I'm gonna talk about
0:16 universities in the US this is a subject
0:17 that I'm sure a lot of you are
0:19 interested in because maybe you've
0:22 thought about studying in the u.s. so
0:24 let's talk about some of the essentials
0:26 that you need to know about American
0:29 colleges so first things first it's
0:31 important that you know that in the u.s.
0:34 we use the word college interchangeably
0:37 with the word university you can say
0:39 either of these words and they refer to
0:41 the same thing most of the time in other
0:44 countries this is not the case I'm sure
0:47 if you go to the UK or Australia you'll
0:49 hear people use these words very
0:52 differently but since I'm an American I
0:54 tend to use the word college more
0:57 frequently than university let's talk a
0:59 little bit about the cost of going to a
1:02 four-year university in the u.s. before
1:04 we can calculate the average cost we
1:05 first need to distinguish between
1:09 in-state and out-of-state tuition what
1:12 am I talking about here well if you
1:14 attend a university that is located in
1:16 the state where you live where you went
1:18 to high school it's cheaper if you
1:20 decide to go to a university in another
1:23 state it's more expensive this is what
1:25 I'm referring to when I talk about
1:29 in-state and out-of-state tuition the
1:31 average in-state tuition for a 4-year
1:34 public university in the u.s. at this
1:37 time is a little more than $25,000 per
1:40 year I know that's a lot but it's
1:42 actually not that bad compared to
1:45 out-of-state tuition the average
1:47 out-of-state tuition for a 4-year public
1:50 university in the u.s. at this time is
1:54 about 41,000 dollars per year that's
1:57 crazy isn't it I wish I could tell you
1:59 that I were joking but sadly I'm not
2:02 this is the reality of going to college
2:04 in the u.s. so you definitely need to
2:07 think about this before you decide to
2:10 study in an American University I was
2:11 pretty lucky because my college wasn't quite
2:12 quite
2:14 expensive you might be wondering how
2:16 people can afford to pay these
2:19 astronomical tuition costs
2:22 the answer is student loans a student
2:24 loan is money that the government lends
2:27 to somebody to pay for college sounds
2:31 great right wrong after you graduate you
2:33 have to pay back all the money that the
2:35 government gave you plus interest
2:38 so after students graduate they spend
2:40 many years paying back their student
2:43 loans college is unbelievably expensive
2:46 in the u.s. all right let's talk about
2:48 the educational aspect of American
2:51 universities in the u.s. students can
2:53 choose their major the subject they want
2:56 to study either before or after starting
2:59 college many students don't know what
3:01 exactly they want to study so they don't
3:03 decide on a major until the end of their
3:06 second year the way this works is that
3:09 all students have general classes during
3:11 their first two years everyone takes
3:13 more or less the same types of classes
3:18 math English history science etc then
3:20 starting in their third year students
3:23 take classes specific to their major so
3:26 for example I majored in English so
3:28 during my third and fourth years of
3:31 university all my classes were related
3:33 to English but during my first and
3:36 second years I had all general classes
3:39 not all English classes this is why many
3:41 people don't decide on a major until the
3:43 end of their second year you don't
3:46 really have to decide before then I know
3:48 this is really different from a lot of
3:50 other university systems in other
3:53 countries okay lastly let's talk about
3:55 living on campus this is something that
3:58 many students do especially in their
4:01 first and second years all universities
4:03 have what we call dorms which are like
4:06 student apartments but usually very
4:08 small the dorms are located on the
4:10 college campus so it makes it really
4:12 convenient for students to walk to their
4:15 classes the downside of living in the
4:17 dorms is that you usually have to share
4:19 your small living space with other
4:22 people if you get stuck with a bad
4:24 roommate you're in for a long year I've
4:25 had some bad
4:27 roommates in the past unfortunately
4:29 another negative thing about living in
4:32 the dorms is that if you're not into
4:34 drinking and partying it can be pretty
4:35 uncomfortable for you
4:38 dorms are notorious for being places
4:40 where students drink party and get into
4:43 all kinds of trouble so you might want
4:44 to consider that before you decide to
4:47 live on campus okay that's all for today
4:49 leave a comment and tell me what your
4:52 country's universities are like I'll see
