0:06 how do we make our spaces and our
0:09 educational institutions welcoming how
0:10 do we make them a place where students
0:13 want to continuously come to class how
0:15 do we make it so that they feel like
0:19 they matter and so empathy means can we
0:21 see them for who they are can we listen
0:23 to where they're coming from and journey
0:25 them through teaching with empathy to me
0:28 is an extension of holistic education
0:32 the idea that the entire student matters
0:35 remembering that really teachers are at
0:38 the service of students we are there to
0:40 help them get where they need to go most
0:43 faculty will tell you that students are
0:49 experiencing anxiety and other emotional
0:51 anguish just from the pressure of
0:54 getting into college being successful in
0:56 college going on to graduate school
0:59 students are dealing with real so
1:00 let's sit down let's come up with a
1:02 strategy for how you can succeed in this
1:04 class for me that's what teaching with
1:06 empathy means I want my students and
1:09 know that I care about their learning I
1:11 want them to understand that I was once
1:14 a student for a very long time and I've
1:17 had the experience of having courses
1:20 that were super fun to go to and some
1:22 courses that were daunting teach with
1:25 empathy to means trying to understand
1:27 I guess what's important to my students
1:28 what do they want to get out of the
1:31 course and what examples material would
1:33 be relevant to them I'm really tapping
1:36 into the difference the diversity the
1:37 positive aspects of difference and
1:40 diversity not just oh we're so different
1:42 we can't understand each other I'm
1:43 saying no we're so different that we can
1:45 actually learn a lot from each other
1:48 what I love about top hat is that it
1:50 serves the needs of all different kinds
1:52 of students so whether you're the
1:56 student who gets bored in a lecture or
1:59 whether you're the student who just
2:02 needs to have some activity to get them
2:05 involved or or you're the student who
2:08 has really interesting ideas but you're
2:11 maybe a little too shy to say something
2:13 this provides you with a platform that
2:15 works for all of our students by
2:16 creating a discussion board in the
2:18 background a simple thing without that
2:21 you are able to let their questions be
2:24 heard I go read their questions they now
2:26 feel confident oh the professor chose my
2:29 question and then you find that the next
2:32 time there's an opportunity for them to
2:34 perhaps raise their hand to engage with me
2:35 me
2:36 they are gonna feel a little bit more
2:38 likely to do so I really like the online
2:40 discussions so I require in a lot of my
2:43 classes students to post a few questions
2:46 or responses every week I really
2:48 encourage them to post articles or
2:50 videos or memes or Twitter posts or
2:52 whatever they think is related to the
2:53 course whatever they find interesting it
2:55 creates an opportunity for everyone to
2:58 belong to the conversation everyone's
3:01 contributing something important and if
3:03 I'm not creating opportunities for those
3:06 connections then I think I'm really
3:09 missing a chance to make the material
3:12 meaningful to them as opposed to a
3:14 traditional model of just standing
3:16 behind a podium teaching the students
3:18 and you might to ask questions but
3:19 you're really not understanding how
3:22 engaged they are with not only the
3:24 material being taught but how that's
3:25 going that's fitting into their career
3:29 goals their overall experiences and I
3:31 know the more I connect with students
3:33 the more successful I am and the better
3:35 outcomes I have and the more successful
