0:00 hey there and welcome back to heimlich's
0:01 history now we'll be going through unit
0:02 4 of the ap government curriculum and in
0:03 this video that means it's time to talk
0:05 about the ideologies of the two major
0:07 political parties of america the
0:09 republicans and the democrats so if
0:11 you're ready to get them brain cows
0:12 milked party style well then let's get
0:14 to it so in this video here's what we're
0:15 trying to do explain how ideologies of
0:17 the two major parties shape policy
0:19 debates okay so that means before we
0:21 start talking about individual parties
0:22 we need to understand political ideology
0:24 political ideology is an interlocking
0:26 set of ideas that form the basis for
0:28 political decision-making and although
0:30 what i'm about to say is a simplified
0:32 version of reality political ideologies
0:34 basically follow along a spectrum
0:35 between liberal and conservative
0:37 ideology now conservative ideology
0:39 emphasizes traditional social structures
0:41 and existing structures of authority
0:42 conservatives tend to emphasize limited
0:44 government and public affairs strong
0:46 stances on crime and punishment and
0:47 champion states rights over federal
0:49 power or to say it another way
0:50 conservatives look at what exists and
0:52 say if it ain't broke don't fix it
0:54 liberal ideology on the other hand
0:55 emphasizes civil rights for the
0:57 marginalized and supports the efforts of
0:58 social justice movements to ensure that
1:00 everyone has equal access to civil
1:02 liberties additionally liberals tend to
1:03 emphasize government involvement in
1:05 public affairs which would include care
1:06 for the poor and regulations on
1:08 businesses and intervention in the
1:09 economy or to say it another way
1:11 liberals look at what exists and says uh
1:13 it is broke so let's fix it now there's
1:15 a third ideology you should know namely
1:17 libertarian ideology but we're gonna
1:19 look at that in another video for our
1:20 purposes here we're just sticking to
1:21 conservative and liberal ideology okay
1:23 let's turn the corner and talk about the
1:25 two major political parties in america
1:26 and how they align with the ideologies
1:28 we just talked about the republican
1:30 party often referred to as the gop or
1:32 the grand old party most closely aligns
1:34 with conservative ideology and the way
1:36 that you know that is by looking at
1:37 their party platform which is a set of
1:39 policy goals published by the party
1:41 which tells you the kinds of legislation
1:43 they would pursue should their candidate
1:44 win an election so if you look at the
1:46 republican platform you can see
1:47 conservative ideology dang near
1:49 everywhere here in the section on the
1:50 economy they say government cannot
1:52 create prosperity though government can
1:54 limit or destroy and that is a
1:56 conservative belief get the government
1:58 out of the economy deregulate businesses
2:00 and let the free market take care of the
2:01 economy in the section on what a
2:02 constitutional government should look
2:04 like they say this about the family
2:05 traditional marriage and family based on
2:07 marriage between one man and one woman
2:09 is the foundation for a free society and
2:11 has for millennia been entrusted with
2:14 rearing children and instilling cultural
2:16 values so again there you have
2:17 conservative ideology reaching backwards
2:19 to establish traditions and seeking to
2:21 uphold them if any broke don't fix it
2:22 additionally the republicans when it
2:24 comes to social programs style
2:25 themselves as the party of personal
2:27 responsibility so it's no surprise to
2:28 see that reflected in their platform in
2:30 the section about social welfare
2:31 programs by making welfare a benefit
2:33 instead of an entitlement our policies
2:35 put millions of recipients on a
2:37 transition from dependence to
2:39 independence and the republicans also
2:40 regard themselves as tough on crime for
2:42 example they say to honor the sacrifice
2:44 of police officers we recommit ourselves
2:47 as individuals and as a party to the
2:49 rule of law and the pursuit of justice
2:51 so i only gave you a sample of the
2:52 platform but you can see that
2:53 republicans generally hold to
2:55 conservative ideology okay now let's
2:56 have a look at some of the examples of
2:58 liberal ideology in the platform of the
3:00 democratic party and honestly you really
3:02 only need to look at the table of
3:03 contents to see the liberal ideology in
3:05 this platform look here and you see they
3:06 want to level the economic playing field
3:08 they want to do that by ending poverty
3:10 and breaking up corporate concentration
3:13 here you have universal affordable
3:14 quality healthcare which would of course
3:16 require significant government
3:18 intervention under healing the soul of
3:20 america the democrats want to fight for
3:21 women's rights lgbtq plus rights
3:23 disability rights indigenous tribal
3:25 nations etc so just with the perusal of
3:27 the table of contents you can see the
3:28 liberal ideology that animates the
3:30 democratic party but there's probably no
3:32 better example of this in the platform
3:33 than the preamble where it says
3:35 americans believe that diversity is our
3:37 greatest strength that protest is among
3:40 the highest forms of patriotism in other
3:42 words it is broke so let's protest and
3:45 fix it okay so you have a sense of how
3:46 each party's platform is informed by
3:48 either conservative or liberal ideology
3:50 but i need to say one more thing about
3:51 all of this don't make the mistake of
3:52 putting an equal sign between the
3:54 republican party and conservative
3:55 ideology or between the democratic party
3:57 and liberal ideology the reality as
3:59 always is a little more complex some
4:01 republicans consider themselves
4:03 conservative on some points but more
4:04 liberal on others and vice versa with
4:06 the democrats so you just need to get it
4:07 in your mind the direction that each
4:09 party leans and you'll be fine as long
4:11 as you remember that the party is not an
4:12 exact synonym for the ideology okay
