captain justin de leon here and today
what i want to talk about
is platoon attack the reference for
today that we're going to be using is
tc3-21.76
from 2017. okay so one of the most basic
missions that we do is platoon attack
um one thing that i want to do to
separate this from
a raid or an ambush is they're much more
different than the fact of
what we're typically trying to
accomplish so in a raid we're always
trying to
kill capture destroy something and then
move and leave the objective very
quickly all right
a lot of times because due to the nature
of that type of assault
it is behind enemy lines trying to
disrupt or do something behind enemy lines
lines
ambush is similar where we're trying to
typically ambush is very enemy focused
where we're trying to kill someone on a
road or some type of linear you know
feature of some kind
and then remove ourselves from that area
as well we're not trying to stay we're
not trying to seize terrain
we're trying to do something do some
action on the enemy and then leave
all right platoon attack is different in
the fact that
typically not always but typically what
we're trying to do with platoon attack
is we're trying to seize some type of
piece of terrain or something important
that the enemy has
some type of key terrain so whether
we're trying to attack in order to seize an
an
airport i should say you see track to
seize an airport in order to deny
something or
we're trying to attack uh to seize a hilltop
hilltop
or attack to seize a city okay typically
when we're attacking the enemy is in a
prepared defense
and we're trying to remove the enemy
from a location
and take that as our for ourselves all
right so that is the main difference
again raid
we're in we're out attack we're in and
we're holding
all right it's a key objective that we
must keep and maintain and retain
in order to you know gain a competitive
advantage over the enemy
all right so for a platoon attack we're
still going to occupy our orp
as usual all right so let's just go over
real fast we still got our four squads
and we have our assault our correction
i'm sorry
we have our weapon squad where our 240
bravos are
so that's the squad those are the the
makeup of the platoon all right those
are the squads that make up the platoon
all right so we're going to start as if
we've already made it to our
orp so here we've got our orp 12
6 security is going to be in the center
preparing for that leader's recon
all right and then we're going to have
a1 on the side
and a2 on the side all right and now
we're preparing many weapons and
equipment for our leaders recon
the biggest thing that we're doing here
is we're trying to organize ourselves
into what we need to do
in order to uh accomplish this objective
all right so over here
we have let's say we're trying to seize
a hilltop
say this is key terrain and we need to
seize this hilltop
you know in order to have a competitive
advantage on the enemy so all right i'll
call this
okay so as we
begin our um leaders recon what we need
to look at is
who do we need on this leader's recon so
let's look at our leaders recon so this
is going to be a little bit different
than some of the other ones because
one of the things that's different about
a platoon attack is we're required to
have an assault
and a support position however we're not
required to have security
now we can use security positions if necessary
necessary
but we're not required so oftentimes
that gives us an extra squad to utilize
during the attack so on our leaders
recon we will have the pl
of horses rtos with them we'll have all
all right we'll have our alpha team
leader which is also our point man
all right and lastly we need to have an
and typically that's going to come from
our security squad all right
so this element will move out all right
and the platoon sergeant
will count them out with the medic and
we'll move towards our objective
and just like always we'll establish
all right typically when we're
establishing our release point what we
want to do first is call a seals halt
okay because what we want to do is we
want to make sure that no enemy is in
the area
all right biggest thing is we also might identify
identify
if the enemy is on the hilltop that
we're trying to seize all right
um and so the quickest way to find the
enemy or to
identify there in the area is doing that
seal salt where we stop look listen smell
smell
we're also trying to confirm that no
enemy is following us
on this movement all right once we've
done our seals halt we've confirmed our
release point
now the pl and the sno team are going to
move forward
and do the first thing on our leader's
recon which is pinpoint the objective
all right so they will move forward
they will pinpoint the objective meaning
they get eyes on it okay
they're gonna get eyes on that objective
and they're gonna establish an sno position
position
all right so one thing is release point
is typically out of sight
but it's within sound you can hugely
hear it the sno
is within sight and within sound so once
we pinpoint the objective
i'm going to place my sno team which
typically what i'm going to do is i'm
going to have an automatic rifleman
and a rifle and sorry a grenadier
all right someone that can affect this
objective and the reason is
is because as i go and continue now to
do my leaders recon
if i were to get compromised i want to
be able to have this team over uh was
over as overwatch
so if i get compromised on this
objective and begin taking fire from the enemy
enemy
they can open up and suppress the enemy
position while i bound and
break contact all right so i want some
type of firepower here
all right so once they're placed i'll
leave them a five-point contingency plan
all right just like i left the platoon
sergeant here i don't think i mentioned
that but
you're obviously going to leave your
five-point contingency plan and he's
going to disseminate to the rest of the platoon
platoon
okay so yeah while this is going on all
right the platoon sergeant he's
disseminating that five-point
contingency plan in the form of agawa
he's also working on a potentially a
ruck plan he's also
improving security doing sector sketches
all that good stuff
to make sure that this is being managed
correctly all right
so once i'm done with the sno i move
back to the release point i'm going to
pick up my squad leaders
and now we're going to go and start our
reconnaissance okay again this is where
differences is between a raid i'm not
required to actually put out security
you know if i was concerned if there was
a road here
moving up to the objective and there's a
enemy position over here that could
reinforce the objective
i might want to have security to provide
early warning but the difference is
is that on a raid or an ambush i isolate
the objective
because i don't want people to move in
and out i want to isolate
because i'm going to go in do something
and then i leave all right
the difference is here now i'm trying to
seize this hilltop i'm trying to seize it
it
so in reality people get hung up
sometimes with
destroying the enemy do i care if the
enemy stays here
um do i care if the enemy let's say the
enemy is right here i know i'm using
greenish i'm using red
if the enemy's here do i care if he
withdraws off the objective
and gives me the hilltop no i don't care
at all
my goal is not to destroy the enemy now
i might have to
uh destroy the enemy in my pro in the process
process
of uh achieving my my my mission but my
mission is to seize the hilltop
okay so i'm not worried about isolating
the subject necessarily i might be
worried about reinforcements coming
but the goal is i don't care if people
withdraw because i'm just trying to
seize the hilltop
all right so security is not absolutely necessary
necessary
to set up to isolate okay
so i'm going to begin my leaders recon
and we're going to do this just like we
do any other recon
where i'm going to cloverleaf around the
objective and i'm going to identify
my different uh my different um you know
points so
you know all me and all the squad
leaders as the pl we're clover leafing
and we're going to find we want to put
our support by fire
and we're going to fully you know
recon that area and what that means is
i'm going to have
myself and the weapon squad leader we're
going to get down on the ground we're
going to make sure that we lay on the
ground and look where the two guns are
going to go the
two 240s ensure that they have clear
fields of fire
ensure that it's set up correctly that
he can control both the guns
ensure that he can shoot onto the
objective where i need to and then what
i'm really going to do is the pl is i
need to make sure
that at this position all my squad
leaders are there
all squad leaders are there and they
begin their coordination okay i've got
lots of squads to work with this time
i've got a1 a2 and i've got my security
squad that's a little bit
freed up okay so a lot of times i'm
going to make sure
that they all understand there what this
view looks like from the support by fire position
position
and ensure that they can see how the
guns are going to be able to shift fire
and what they're going to shift from and
so typically what i'm going to do here
then too
is i'm going to have them together
create my trps
all right trp1 let's say let's say
there's trp2 right here
and trp3 and this is going to help you
know conduct fire control measures on
the objective
where initially i could have gun 1
firing in between trp 2 and trp1
and i could have gun 2 here and then
when it's time to shift fire gun 1 can
just shift
up here and can stop firing here all
right the point is is i want to start
figuring out those trps right away so
that everyone can see it from the
support position
and they understand what it looks like
all right once that's complete
i'm then going to go you know through oh
and these guys will actually come out of the
the
release point i'm going to come out of
the release point and find my assault position
position
where i want to assault from all right
and this is probably where i'm at least
going to have a1 assault leader
squad leader but then i'm going to have
everyone else here to see so they can
see what it looks like okay
um it depends what i want to do for this
mission it depends what i expect the
enemy to see
different ways to use these these uh
these methods so
i might have a salt one here and i might
have assault two short
quickly behind them ready to follow and
assume so maybe assault two
will be out of the fight originally but
as assault one moves up and begins their assault
assault
i might have assault two standing by
ready to go
all right who knows what might happen is
i might on this objective there might be
barbed wire
and i might need assault one to go up
and do a breaching operation which i'm
not going to go in detail on
uh but do social and do a breaching
operation and once assault one is done
with that breach
then assault two actually goes through
and exploits
and continues the assault through there
might be a lot of different things that i
i
need to do but i'm gonna have to confirm
or deny it on this objective so
right now what we'll do is we'll work
under the assumption that there is
an obstacle here meaning the enemy has
put up
triple scr uh let's say triple strand c
wire i'll mark it in green
triple strand c wire a with a plan right
now is a1 is going to go move up
they're going to cut a hole in that c
wire all right they're going to exploit
our correction they're going to make
that breach and then the salt 2 is going
to be the one that actually
moves through and assaults through the
objective all right so we have to be
very careful especially with our fire
control measures up here
and then what we'll decide is for now
the remainder security squad will stay
back at the orp
with the rucksacks ready to move forward
and reinforce when necessary
okay so once we've decided all this and
we understand how the trps are going to
work for a1 and
uh and the support okay once we feel confident
confident
we can then move everyone back to the
release point
all right give the sno all right a
five-point contingency plan
and let them know hey what i need to
know is i need to know if anything
changes on the objective
all right um so they move back and go
into the platoon
goes get back to the platoon starting
position starting counts us in and now
we're ready to start moving forward
okay so we're going to move forward and
then occupy these positions
all right so we're gonna let the sno
position know hey we're moving in
and at this time once we move in and we
actually occupy these objectives
the sno can turn around but main thing is
is
just like any other mission we're gonna
move to this release point
all right and then the main element
that's going to move in first
is going to be their support by fire and
typically our psg is going to move in
with our support for fire and again the
reason we always establish support by
fire first is because
one it takes time to put these guns on
the tripod so i'm gonna put
one 240 up on bipod looking over the objective
objective
and i'm going to be working the other
one putting it on tripod once the other
one's on tripod it's got its metal the
metal figured out
then i'm going to put my other one on
tripod and once they're both squared away
away
up on the objective focus between the
trps then
it's now time for a salt to move in
position so i'll salt one move into position
position
and again this is kind of like terrain
would be a little different but
assault two is behind assault one ready
to move in as well
all right so that's how we need to move
in support and then assault
and again the reason and then another
reason is is that if assault who's
probably moving in closer to the objective
objective
if they were to get compromised all
right and begin to take fire
immediately the support by fire can open
up begin to suppress the enemy
and we can move right into the operation itself
itself
okay and then like we talked about
back here security is staying at the orp
and maintaining the rucks back at the rp
all right
one thing that we need to do is we
always need to make sure security
understands what their planning
priorities are
meaning they're kind of in reserve so
what are the things that we might use
them for
we might use them to continue the
assault position all right we might use
them to bring forward our rucksacks once we've
we've
taken this terrain because we can't
leave it once we've taken it we might
use them
to exploit the enemy and follow and
assume him if he if he withdraws
we might have some ops sent out right
away that we might want to set up because
because
one thing that we got to think about is
the moment we take this terrain it's
probably the key to rain meaning
it has a marked advantage for whoever
owns it whether it's us
or the enemy if we take this terrain
what should we expect right away
we should expect a counter attack at
least very shortly after so we have to
once we
once we seize this and establish
security we have to move into a hasty
defensive posture
and so we might push security forward
right away and put ops out in front of
us to
identify any enemy now moving in okay so
um that'll come in later but the point
is is now we're set up all right and
we're going to initiate
just like we always would okay support
by fire is going to initiate on this objective
objective
and again we'll probably have both guns shooting
shooting
in between these two trps and a1 is
begin going to begin to move forward
all right and once it's time from a1 to
go ahead and begin their breach
we're probably um going to shift fire
with these guns and now all
guns are focused between trp two and three
three
okay we're going to do a breaching
operation which i'm going to be making in
in
a separate video about once this breach
all right a1 is going to secure the near
side of the breach
and they're going to secure the far side
and then a2
is going to push through all right and exploit
exploit
through the breach all right so now a2
gets online
and actually begins to assault through
this objective and take this hilltop
all right and what's going on now is
we're likely calling a
shift or a lift fire or cease fire and
all the guns are seizing
seizing the shoot on the objective okay
the biggest thing that we got to worry about
about
again we did a lot of coordination when
all squad leaders were here
all squad leaders are here is how are we
calling the lift and shift fire okay
are we using radio comms are we yelling
are we using whistles
are we using you know other methods
whatever the method might be
star clusters whatever method you have
you just need to make sure that it's codified
codified
throughout so everyone understands
what's going on and when these are going
to be called
and these guys cannot continue their
assault until they've confirmed
that the firing has stopped and they've
confirmed that these guys are tracking hey
hey
uh we're we're on ceasefire
okay and then these guys will assault
through the objective
a2 assaults all the way through the
objective and once they get to their loa
they call loa
again loa is a deliberate call we're not
just calling it to call it
okay we are calling it for a specific reason
reason
all right so it needs to be at least 35
meters past
and it has to be at a cover to conceal
position all right has to be there
all right and so once we've called l
away all right
now we can move the support as well all
right oftentimes
we don't want our guns to just charge
through the objective but the point is
is that
we need to have someone move through
this as well so it might be a1
way
and get online here a1 might call it
away and the 240s
might move through and join a1 okay but
the point is is
this isn't exactly the same as a squad
attack where our support by fire
is just going to pick up and assault
through i don't want to assault through
an objective
with my 240s all right now if the
objective is clear and it's just time
for them to move through and get online
that works but essentially what i would
do is this guy these guys that were
breaching here
all right they just get online what's
left of them because they might have
things with casualties
and they get online here so now i
basically have pretty good far side security
security
looking out this way this is kind of
getting messy
okay so now we've got good security with
a2 and a1 over here
all right and then our guns have moved
through as well and now what we need to
do is establish 360 security
so we're going to fan out all right and
ensure we got security this way
ensure we got security this way and then
really sno
is covering rear security and this time
our security uh squad begin to move
forward and plug in the holes as well
wherever we want them and again
they might be moving to ops on the outside
outside
they also might be bringing the rucks
forward for the whole platoon thank you
for bringing the whole rucks up
okay but the point is is once we
establish security that is the first
thing we have to do we got to establish some
some
type of security where we get 360. it
doesn't have to be a perfect
circle but it has to we have to be have
360 security in some way
all right so accomplish that and then
once we accomplish that we can start
working our special teams
so again the first thing we're going to
do is epw
all right now again what we need to do
first is we need to
clear every single epw there's going to
be a lot of dead bodies on this
objective likely
but we need to clear them all right then
we can start to search them and the
reason is is
until we clear them and ensure that they
have no no there's no potential danger
from them
we can't start working on our friendly
casualties we can't start working on
aiden litter
until we confirm the enemy is dead and
the reason is is because if we have a
friendly casualty on the ground
and we start attending to them before
the enemy is neutralized
that person that's doing the attending
becomes a target
and we can't take more casualties by
helping casualties
before before the enemy is neutralized
the quickest way that you can help your buddies
buddies
is kill the enemy neutralize the enemy
and then you can focus on this
all right once the epw is conducted and cleared
cleared
all right we're doing aiden litter and
we're calling up any nine line medevac
requests that we need to do anything
like that
okay and like we did we planned this
well and so we probably have hlz's
around the area that we can go to
and we can medivac these guys out or if
there's a road in the area we can do do
a ground kazabek
and get get our casualties out right the
point is is we now have to maintain this hilltop
hilltop
we occupied it or we seized it for a
reason and the reason is
because it's key to rain so we need to
keep it with all the fire power they got
all the combat power we have
until we're relieved once we leave then
we can move out but right now
that's going to be our main goal is to
retain that and so the next step
once we do epw and litter is now we need
to start
hastily preparing a defense and start
turning that defense now
slowly over time into a deliberate
defense until we're relieved
because the whole point is we expect
that the enemy's going to counter attack
us at some time
again with an attack we're season
terrain for a reason
all right it's key to rain likely and
we're gonna be able to use it for future operations
operations
okay all right so we just have to start
moving our things around
start moving our guys around start doing
lace reports start
looking at liquid ammo casualties
equipment to ensure everything's good
and then obviously we gotta call higher
all right and let them know that we've
achieved we've uh we've seized this objective
objective
and we are preparing a hasty defense for
future operations okay
and that's where the platoon sergeant
he's working these in litter but he's
also working cross-leveling ammo
cross-living water you know getting
ready all right the biggest thing that
you have to fight is once you
attack and seize an objective is
complacency all right get your soldiers
out of mind said hey
we just won this battle hey man the
battle ain't over we could
we should be expecting that enemy
counter attack and we can't get complacent
complacent
we gotta start worrying about that right
away okay
okay um this is essentially what a
platoon attack looks like
it's not incredibly difficult it's
really the same as a squat attack
but you have more elements to work with
you've got the a1 the a2 again
you might not have to do a breach your
a2 might be able to be an extra reserve
you might really only need two
squads to conduct this operation or you
might have a
full squad size element on the objective
and you want a1 and a2
you know side by side here's a2 down
here to
do a full clearance of this objective
whatever you might need
i think is don't don't get overwhelmed
by having additional squads
having additional men to do things is a
good problem all right but use them wisely
wisely
all right give them a job even these
guys back here guarding the rucks
securing the rucks
and being a um you know and being a
reserve ready to get employed in the
fight how you see fit
that's still a job all right don't just
say hey just sit there and hang out
everyone can you have a job everyone can
be used uh to make your mission more
effective okay
all right again i hope this was helpful
uh platoon attack is a great mission
um and it's typically it's it's how we seize
seize
objectives in the real army and my name
