0:05 hi everyone and thanks so much for
0:08 joining me for our pre-session
0:10 work or activity that we're going to be
0:12 doing ahead of our time together during
0:15 your next leadership coaching session
0:16 with me
0:19 so today is going to be all about
0:22 looking into the different approaches to
0:23 school leadership that are most
0:26 conducive to staff wellbeing and
0:29 exploring who we are as a leader and the
0:31 kind of styles or approaches that that
0:33 we adopt ourselves
0:35 so by now you'll be really familiar with
0:38 my six step approach to improving staff
0:40 wellbeing and school culture so we've
0:42 made our way through now scanning our
0:43 school and pinpointing the health and
0:45 wellbeing needs of staff and we've
0:48 already begun to commence step two which
0:50 is to upskill the leaders and staff in
0:53 effective ways to promote and improve
0:55 staff wellbeing and school culture and
0:57 we're going to be continuing with that
0:59 throughout this term and through our
1:00 next few sessions
1:03 all around evolving our leadership it's
1:06 really important for us to align a
1:07 leadership approach that's more
1:09 conducive to staff well-being because
1:12 change really does begin with leaders in
1:14 fact the most current research is really
1:17 advocating for our leaders to evolve and
1:19 adapt the way that they lead their schools
1:20 schools
1:21 this is a great quote that i found
1:23 recently school leaders should have
1:26 distinct leadership styles in order to
1:31 respond to the covert 19 pandemic
1:34 so one of the key takeaways for our next
1:35 session together is that effective
1:38 leaders lead with well-being in mind
1:40 adapting their leadership to be
1:41 responsive to their staff
1:43 so this is the whole premise of a
1:46 well-led school it's those school
1:48 leaders who put wellbeing first and then
1:51 the rest will follow school performance
1:54 staff performance student performance
1:56 now effective leaders know their beliefs
1:58 and their values they understand their
2:01 strengths and areas for growth
2:03 how these influence their leadership and
2:07 impacts on the people that they lead
2:09 another great theme emerging in the
2:11 research for leaders in education there
2:13 is an increasing research evidence
2:15 demonstrating a strong connection
2:18 between self-awareness and leader effectiveness
2:19 effectiveness
2:21 so all of the work that we're going to
2:22 be doing in our upcoming sessions is
2:25 around building self-awareness and
2:27 extending that even to an external
2:29 self-awareness which we'll explore more
2:32 in our upcoming session
2:34 so the purpose of this very short video
2:35 is to explore these four different
2:38 styles and for you to self-reflect and review
2:39 review
2:41 which leadership style you think you fit into
2:42 into
2:44 or which is the leadership style that
2:47 you would aspire to adopt more in your
2:49 professional practice
2:50 so we're going to start off with
2:53 instructional leadership
2:56 so the instructional leader focuses on
2:58 improving teaching quality through the
3:00 professional development of teachers
3:02 often we'll see
3:04 instructional leaders having a really
3:06 in-depth understanding of pedagogy and
3:08 practice themselves
3:11 they plan for and facilitate teacher
3:12 learning so they're really focused on
3:15 the professional learning of their staff
3:18 they define their school's mission
3:20 they manage the instructional program so
3:22 providing those opportunities for their
3:23 staff and ensuring that there's continuity
3:25 continuity
3:28 they promote high expectations for
3:30 staff and and teacher performance and
3:32 for the students as well
3:35 they provide incentives for for teachers
3:38 and students to to perform
3:40 they evaluate teacher performance
3:42 regularly so um
3:44 engaging in performance reviews and and
3:46 regular goal setting and
3:48 and our professional development plans
3:50 is a key part of their professional practice
3:51 practice
3:54 they promote mentoring and coaching for the
3:55 the
3:57 uh quality of the instructional
3:59 leadership or the instructional program
4:02 and they focus on accountability from
4:04 their staff
4:05 so you might like to take a minute now
4:08 to pause the video and reflect in your
4:11 workbook on the strengths or the
4:13 attributes of an instructional leader
4:15 that that you currently have
4:18 or if you aspire to be more of an
4:20 instructional leader what are some of
4:21 those things that you can reflect on
4:24 that you'd like to work on or embed as
4:31 all right next we have strategic
4:33 leadership so strategic leadership is
4:35 based on long-range planning with an
4:38 assessment of current school performance
4:40 and it takes the necessary steps to
4:44 improve future results so strategic
4:46 leaders set the direction of the school
4:48 with vision so they're very vision orientated
4:49 orientated
4:52 they create frameworks interventions and
4:55 they allocate resources in order to get
4:58 to their their vision and support their
4:59 staff to
5:01 of course achieve that
5:04 they base their decisions on evidence
5:05 and research
5:07 they draw on data and respond with the
5:10 most suitable approach so whether it's
5:12 staff training reviewing their policies
5:15 and procedures or with a focus on
5:17 culture building
5:19 strategic leaders are always looking for
5:21 ways to improve the school environment
5:23 so they have quite a big picture view on
5:26 this and they invest in partnerships
5:29 across the school community
5:31 so you might like to take a minute to
5:34 reflect um am i a strategic leader
5:37 perhaps you've worked for or are now
5:39 working alongside or underneath the
5:41 strategic leader
5:43 are there qualities here of the
5:45 strategic leadership style that you
5:47 aspire to
5:49 that you would like to focus more on
5:50 doing or embedding as part of your
5:52 professional practice
5:55 take a moment now to pause the video use
5:57 your workbook and and fill out some of
5:59 those questions under the strategic
6:01 leadership section
6:04 next we have servant leadership i love
6:06 the name of this so um it you know it's
6:09 not dedicating ourselves wholly to to
6:11 another person or a group of people but
6:13 uh in many ways it actually kind of is
6:15 alluding to the fact that we're putting
6:17 uh other people
6:19 either directly in alignment with us or
6:22 ahead of us or we're very people focused
6:24 so servant leadership places an emphasis
6:27 on maintaining high expectations and
6:29 helping teachers and students to develop
6:30 their skills and
6:31 and
6:33 improve their performance so the key
6:36 word here is around helping teachers and
6:38 students so there's that um kind of loop
6:41 the alluding to the servant word there
6:43 so servant leaders instill the desire
6:45 for improvement while maintaining a
6:49 focus on both results and relationships
6:51 so there's a focus on connection here
6:53 servant leaders show characteristics
6:55 like listening empathy
6:56 empathy
6:58 healing awareness persuasion
7:00 persuasion conceptualization
7:02 conceptualization
7:05 foresight stewardship commitment to the
7:10 growth of people and building community
7:12 servant leaders remove barriers for
7:15 teachers they provide resources and open
7:17 communication with the entire school community
7:18 community
7:21 servant leaders share the power in
7:23 decision making so they involve the
7:26 people who are part of their school community
7:28 community
7:30 servant leaders motivate and persuade
7:33 their school community towards a shared
7:36 vision with a focus on the big picture
7:38 so this is almost you know moving from
7:41 strategic level that kind of step up to
7:43 involve more people and help people to
7:46 get on board with with their vision
7:48 and to support the people in their community
7:50 community
7:54 so you might like to reflect now on
7:55 whether you've worked whether alongside
7:57 a servant leader
7:58 whether you think you're a servant
8:01 leader yourself what are some of those
8:03 strengths that you show
8:05 as a servant leader
8:07 maybe you're thinking oh that sounds
8:10 like an awesome leadership approach
8:11 there are some qualities in that that i
8:14 aspire to move more towards as part of
8:16 my leadership journey
8:18 so pause the video now using your
8:22 workbook to record some of your ideas
8:24 and next we have transformational leadership
8:25 leadership
8:27 so transformational leadership takes a
8:29 collaborative approach
8:31 empowering staff to have a say in
8:33 decision making
8:35 it's built off share a shared sense of
8:39 purpose and collective goal setting
8:41 transformational leadership promotes and
8:44 fosters collective innovation and
8:46 improvement so as you can see in that
8:48 description there's lots of shared
8:52 involvement and the collective approach
8:54 it's very collaborative so
8:56 transformational leaders have high
8:58 performance expectations like many of
9:00 the other leadership approaches
9:02 they develop people with coaching
9:05 mentoring and support
9:07 there's a focus on building productive relationships
9:09 relationships
9:11 they also do provide instructional support
9:13 support
9:15 there's a real emphasis on engaging staff
9:17 staff
9:20 the transformational leader inspires trust
9:21 trust admiration
9:22 admiration
9:25 loyalty and respect from their followers
9:27 they have high
9:29 emotional intelligence
9:31 they're able to monitor their own emotions
9:32 emotions
9:35 and to a degree influence the emotions
9:37 of others
9:39 they energize their teams
9:43 and they drive success
9:45 let's have a think about it now have you
9:48 ever been lucky enough to to work under
9:49 the guidance of a transformational leader
9:51 leader
9:52 do you consider yourself a
9:54 transformational leader
9:57 what are your strengths
10:00 or are you thinking this sounds awesome
10:01 what are those attributes or those
10:03 skills or what are the elements of that
10:06 approach that you'd like to focus on
10:09 or work towards in order to evolve your
10:11 leadership further
10:13 so pause the video now to reflect on
10:15 your worksheet so we've explored four
10:17 different leadership styles today which
10:19 we'll be discussing in our upcoming
10:22 session i look forward to reflecting on
10:24 these different approaches with you as a
10:26 group during our upcoming session so
