hi everyone and thanks so much for
joining me for our pre-session
work or activity that we're going to be
doing ahead of our time together during
your next leadership coaching session
with me
so today is going to be all about
looking into the different approaches to
school leadership that are most
conducive to staff wellbeing and
exploring who we are as a leader and the
kind of styles or approaches that that
we adopt ourselves
so by now you'll be really familiar with
my six step approach to improving staff
wellbeing and school culture so we've
made our way through now scanning our
school and pinpointing the health and
wellbeing needs of staff and we've
already begun to commence step two which
is to upskill the leaders and staff in
effective ways to promote and improve
staff wellbeing and school culture and
we're going to be continuing with that
throughout this term and through our
next few sessions
all around evolving our leadership it's
really important for us to align a
leadership approach that's more
conducive to staff well-being because
change really does begin with leaders in
fact the most current research is really
advocating for our leaders to evolve and
adapt the way that they lead their schools
schools
this is a great quote that i found
recently school leaders should have
distinct leadership styles in order to
respond to the covert 19 pandemic
so one of the key takeaways for our next
session together is that effective
leaders lead with well-being in mind
adapting their leadership to be
responsive to their staff
so this is the whole premise of a
well-led school it's those school
leaders who put wellbeing first and then
the rest will follow school performance
staff performance student performance
now effective leaders know their beliefs
and their values they understand their
strengths and areas for growth
how these influence their leadership and
impacts on the people that they lead
another great theme emerging in the
research for leaders in education there
is an increasing research evidence
demonstrating a strong connection
between self-awareness and leader effectiveness
effectiveness
so all of the work that we're going to
be doing in our upcoming sessions is
around building self-awareness and
extending that even to an external
self-awareness which we'll explore more
in our upcoming session
so the purpose of this very short video
is to explore these four different
styles and for you to self-reflect and review
review
which leadership style you think you fit into
into
or which is the leadership style that
you would aspire to adopt more in your
professional practice
so we're going to start off with
instructional leadership
so the instructional leader focuses on
improving teaching quality through the
professional development of teachers
often we'll see
instructional leaders having a really
in-depth understanding of pedagogy and
practice themselves
they plan for and facilitate teacher
learning so they're really focused on
the professional learning of their staff
they define their school's mission
they manage the instructional program so
providing those opportunities for their
staff and ensuring that there's continuity
continuity
they promote high expectations for
staff and and teacher performance and
for the students as well
they provide incentives for for teachers
and students to to perform
they evaluate teacher performance
regularly so um
engaging in performance reviews and and
regular goal setting and
and our professional development plans
is a key part of their professional practice
practice
they promote mentoring and coaching for the
the
uh quality of the instructional
leadership or the instructional program
and they focus on accountability from
their staff
so you might like to take a minute now
to pause the video and reflect in your
workbook on the strengths or the
attributes of an instructional leader
that that you currently have
or if you aspire to be more of an
instructional leader what are some of
those things that you can reflect on
that you'd like to work on or embed as
all right next we have strategic
leadership so strategic leadership is
based on long-range planning with an
assessment of current school performance
and it takes the necessary steps to
improve future results so strategic
leaders set the direction of the school
with vision so they're very vision orientated
orientated
they create frameworks interventions and
they allocate resources in order to get
to their their vision and support their
staff to
of course achieve that
they base their decisions on evidence
and research
they draw on data and respond with the
most suitable approach so whether it's
staff training reviewing their policies
and procedures or with a focus on
culture building
strategic leaders are always looking for
ways to improve the school environment
so they have quite a big picture view on
this and they invest in partnerships
across the school community
so you might like to take a minute to
reflect um am i a strategic leader
perhaps you've worked for or are now
working alongside or underneath the
strategic leader
are there qualities here of the
strategic leadership style that you
aspire to
that you would like to focus more on
doing or embedding as part of your
professional practice
take a moment now to pause the video use
your workbook and and fill out some of
those questions under the strategic
leadership section
next we have servant leadership i love
the name of this so um it you know it's
not dedicating ourselves wholly to to
another person or a group of people but
uh in many ways it actually kind of is
alluding to the fact that we're putting
uh other people
either directly in alignment with us or
ahead of us or we're very people focused
so servant leadership places an emphasis
on maintaining high expectations and
helping teachers and students to develop
their skills and
and
improve their performance so the key
word here is around helping teachers and
students so there's that um kind of loop
the alluding to the servant word there
so servant leaders instill the desire
for improvement while maintaining a
focus on both results and relationships
so there's a focus on connection here
servant leaders show characteristics
like listening empathy
empathy
healing awareness persuasion
persuasion conceptualization
conceptualization
foresight stewardship commitment to the
growth of people and building community
servant leaders remove barriers for
teachers they provide resources and open
communication with the entire school community
community
servant leaders share the power in
decision making so they involve the
people who are part of their school community
community
servant leaders motivate and persuade
their school community towards a shared
vision with a focus on the big picture
so this is almost you know moving from
strategic level that kind of step up to
involve more people and help people to
get on board with with their vision
and to support the people in their community
community
so you might like to reflect now on
whether you've worked whether alongside
a servant leader
whether you think you're a servant
leader yourself what are some of those
strengths that you show
as a servant leader
maybe you're thinking oh that sounds
like an awesome leadership approach
there are some qualities in that that i
aspire to move more towards as part of
my leadership journey
so pause the video now using your
workbook to record some of your ideas
and next we have transformational leadership
leadership
so transformational leadership takes a
collaborative approach
empowering staff to have a say in
decision making
it's built off share a shared sense of
purpose and collective goal setting
transformational leadership promotes and
fosters collective innovation and
improvement so as you can see in that
description there's lots of shared
involvement and the collective approach
it's very collaborative so
transformational leaders have high
performance expectations like many of
the other leadership approaches
they develop people with coaching
mentoring and support
there's a focus on building productive relationships
relationships
they also do provide instructional support
support
there's a real emphasis on engaging staff
staff
the transformational leader inspires trust
trust admiration
admiration
loyalty and respect from their followers
they have high
emotional intelligence
they're able to monitor their own emotions
emotions
and to a degree influence the emotions
of others
they energize their teams
and they drive success
let's have a think about it now have you
ever been lucky enough to to work under
the guidance of a transformational leader
leader
do you consider yourself a
transformational leader
what are your strengths
or are you thinking this sounds awesome
what are those attributes or those
skills or what are the elements of that
approach that you'd like to focus on
or work towards in order to evolve your
leadership further
so pause the video now to reflect on
your worksheet so we've explored four
different leadership styles today which
we'll be discussing in our upcoming
session i look forward to reflecting on
these different approaches with you as a
group during our upcoming session so
