Christian freedom, as described by Paul in Galatians 5:1-6, is a liberation from the burdensome yoke of legalistic slavery, achieved through Christ's redemption and empowered by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to live by faith with genuine desire.

this is our second session on Galatians
5 1-6 and I want us to see if we can get
inside Paul's head here to understand
the nature of this
slavery and the nature of this
freedom for Freedom Christ has set us
free that's what he says to Christians
in the churches of galatia for Freedom
Christ has set us free stand firm
therefore in this
freedom and do not submit again to a
yoke of
slavery so father as we try to understand
understand the
the
preciousness of this freedom for which
we've been
freed by Christ
and we try to understand the the horror
of this slavery to which they were
turning oh grant us to understand what
they are and how to flee this and how to
embrace and live in this I pray in Jesus name
name
amen let's take our cue from this word
yoke that's where we'll start do not
submit again to to a yoke of
slavery so i' I've got an animal
here don't ask me what kind of animal
that is and I got an animal
here and on these two animals so that
they can do the hard work of say plowing
I'm going to put on them a big Yol and
then the the ropes go back here to the
to the
human who's
got them yolked in so there's this yoke
of slavery now what characterizes that
yoke one is
heavy it's
uncomfortable it's weight it's around your
your
neck and secondly it's
coerced right this this guy is
controlling your behavior so if you're
under it yoke of slavery somebody else
is pulling your strings doesn't matter
whether you feel like you're operating
in Free Will you're
not you're in a yoke of slavery so at
least those two things it's a heavy
burdensome thing and it's it's not
letting you do what you want to
do these these oxen here do not want to
be doing this they'd rather out be be
out grazing in the field somewhere or
hanging out with a a few lady
cows they don't want to be coerced by
this fella now to show that we're on the
right track here look at acts 151
to10 some men came down from
Judea and were teaching the brothers
this is in in
Antioch unless you are circumcised ized
according to the custom of Moses you
cannot be
saved in verse 10 the response of the
Apostles to that now therefore why are
you putting God to the test by placing a
yoke what's the
Yoke the demand for circumcision in
order to be saved placing a yoke on the
neck of the disciples that neither our
fathers nor we have been able to bear
it's too
heavy we have not been able to bear that
yoke so we know we're on the right T
track because that's the issue here in
Galatians look I Paul say to you that if
you are circumcised so that's what's being
being required
required
circumcision for justification
justification by law and that law
corresponds to circumcision Christ will
be of no advantage to you I testify
again to every man who's being
circumcised that he's a debtor to keep
the whole law and that debtor right
there is this slavery this burden of
debt I got to keep the law in order to
be justified that's the heavy yoke
justification by faith is to come back
under a slavery of heaviness and a
slavery of coercion meaning you're being
required to do by this law what you
don't want to
do you're having to perform your way to
heaven which is an impossible
impossible
task in fact notice what it says you are
severed from Christ you who would be
justified by law you have fallen Away
From Grace now right there I think is
the clue to the opposite of the
slavery so if slavery
is being a
deor bearing the immense weight of
keeping the whole law in order to be
justified and operating without a
transformed heart so you're always being
told to do things you don't have a heart
to do if that's the slavery what what's
the freedom and this the freedom
corresponds to this Grace here and this
Faith here you have fallen from Grace
where you were enjoying
freedom because through the Spirit by
faith we ourselves eagerly wait for the
hope of righteousness so Grace
corresponding to Faith is the path to
freedom and the best place to see that
is in chapter 3 this is just so
glorious remember it said Christ
redeemed us from the curse of the law
now that word redeemed could be translated
translated
freed freed from
slavery purchased by Ransom from bondage
so think Freedom Christ redeemed us from
the curse of the
law becoming a curse for us the heaviest
aspect of this horrible yoke here is
that these two oxen are going to wind up in
in
hell that's their future if they reject
Grace if they reject faith if they try
to be justified by the
law they're going to remain under the
curse of the law for it is written
cursed is everyone who's hanged on a
tree which is where Jesus was hanged so
that in Christ The Blessing of Abraham
might come to the Gentiles so that we
might receive the promised Spirit
through faith so notice two things
happen in this Redemption one curse is
lifted from us he became a curse for us
the weight of
damnation which is the worst weight of
all is taken by Christ
he became cursed in our place and
secondly the lack of ability and desire
to do the things that please God is
taken away because we receive the spirit
so the cross and the spirit do the
double work of
Liberation Liberation
from this horrible weight here that
results in Dam ation and Liberation from
the coercion because we're being changed
from the inside out by the Holy Spirit
here's Galatians
5:116 I say walk by the
spirit and you won't gratify the desires
of the flesh which lead to destruction
the fruit of the spirit is love joy
peace patience kindness goodness
faithfulness gentleness self-control
against such things there's no law in
other words the spirit from the inside
out not coercively from the outside in
it's not that we're reading rules
written on tablets of stone the spirit
is writing the law on our hearts so that
all these beautiful things are being
worked in Us by the spirit and against
such things there is no law we are being
set free not only from the weight and the
the
curse of this yoke but also from the
fact that we under the law were just
forced to do things we had no heart to
do so
Freedom what is Christian Freedom it is
desire to do
do with
with no
no
years now that's a provocative way to
say it but think it through with me when
we are set free by Christ through the
red Redemption of the substitution by
which he took from us the curse there
are no regrets in a thousand years we
are going to be happy forever and ever
and ever because there's no curse
hanging over us anymore for our
Disobedience we are justified by
faith and secondly because the Holy Spirit
comes so that we might receive the
promised holy spirit and we thus walk by
the spirit therefore our desires are
changed from the inside out we don't
have any ropes on us like this yanking
us around by the neck because we hate
the will of God we don't hate the will
of God anymore we're changed from the
inside out by the spirit there's this
double deliverance from slavery the
slavery of lacking desire
and the slavery of of the curse let me
illustrate suppose you
airplane okay this an airplane and
you're going to skydive you want a
Skydive you think so you get up and
you're now I don't know how many
thousands of feet up in the air and they
open the door and you're standing there
and you look down you say no way
absolutely no way am I going to jump out
of this airplane I do not desire to do
this now that I see what it is and they
put a gun to your head and say we're
going to shoot you dead if you don't
jump and okay you jump because that's
certain death this may be death that's
not Freedom right you don't have the
desire you got to have a desire for
there to be freedom in
Christ or suppose uh you've you you jump
because you want to and then you realize
I never got any training for this I
don't have any ability to work this
parachute and you're looking at all the
ropes and devices and you have no idea
what to do you don't have any ability to
pull off this life of skydiving you
smash into the ground at 120 miles an
hour that's not Freedom you have to have
the ability to work the thing or suppose
you jump out you have all the desire you
have all the the the
training and about 30 seconds later you
look and say that's that's not a
parachute that's a
backpack you don't
have any hope and there are plenty of
regrets as you fall the curse has not
been lifted so I'm saying there are
these things you must have in in order
for there to be freedom in Christ namely
you need to have the curse lifted no
more cursed heavy load that's going to
drag you to destruction and you must be
free from the inside out being changed
by the spirit and that's what he did
when you trusted
Christ he took all your curse away he
gave you the Holy Spirit He Set You Free
from justification by lawke
keeping and now he pleads for these
Galatians stand there keep trusting Live
Your Life by Faith remember Galatians
2:20 I've been crucified with Christ it
is no longer I who live but Christ who
lives in me and the life I now live in
the flesh I live by faith do that live
by faith in the Son of God he loved you
keep remembering the love keep living by
