Core Theme
This message explores the significance of Mary, the mother of Jesus, focusing on God's grace as exemplified in her life, particularly her role in the birth of Christ. It argues against extremes of either magnifying Mary or ignoring her, instead highlighting lessons of God's grace available to all believers through her example.
[Music]
the messages you were about to hear were
first given on our daily radio broadcast
pastor warren wesby is the speaker
and this series of messages is entitled
mary's christmas
and here's pastor warren wesby
let's pray together shall we
thank you father for sending the lord
jesus thank you that he is the savior
thank you that he is the full expression
of your person
thank you that he has revealed to us
your love and we don't have to be afraid
and i pray now as we study the word
together that your spirit will teach us
and your spirit will help us to put it
into practice in our daily lives for
jesus sake amen
amen
when it comes to mary the mother of our lord
lord
people usually go to one of two extremes
they either magnify her so much that
nobody can see the lord jesus
or they ignore her completely now i
believe that both extremes are wrong
those of us who love the lord jesus
christ and who love the bible can learn
much about the grace of god from the
life and the testimony of mary
i want to focus especially on mary's
part in the birth of our lord jesus
christ the record that dr luke gives us
in luke chapters 1 and 2.
if you have your bible open to luke
chapters one and two you'll note that
there are four exciting scenes recorded
in the life of mary
beginning in chapter 1 verse 26
through verse 38 we find mary submitting
you'll notice in verse 38 behold the
handmaid or the slave of the lord be it
unto me according to thy word mary
submitting she presents herself to the lord
lord
then in verse 39 down through verse 56
you find mary singing
she arose and went to see her relative
elizabeth elizabeth blesses the lord and
then mary sings that marvelous song that
magnifies god mary is singing
in verses 39 through 56 of luke chapter
one she's praising god
by the way these two things go together
don't they if you present yourself to
god as a living sacrifice very shortly
after you will be praising god sacrifice
and song always go together
mary submitting luke 1 26-38
mary singing luke 1 39-56
then we skip to chapter 2
because the intervening verses really
have to do with john the baptist chapter
2 of luke we find mary searching verses
1 through 20.
and mary is pondering what is going on
verse 19 but mary kept all these things
and pondered them in her heart
mary is searching
the baby is born the shepherds come
it's a it's an interesting experience
for this precious little jewish girl and
she's pondering god's ways
then in chapter 2 at verse 21 through
verse 40 we find mary sacrificing she
and joseph come to the temple in order
to present jesus to the lord and also to
bring the sacrifices required and so she
performs the law that is required
these four scenes will form the basis
for our study mary submitting she
presents herself to the lord
mary singing
she praises the lord
mary searching
she ponders the ways of the lord and
then mary sacrificing she performs the
law of the lord
i'm going to read verses 26 through 33
of luke chapter 1. it's such a beautiful paragraph
paragraph
talking about the visit of the angel to mary
mary
and in the sixth month the angel gabriel
was sent from god unto a city of galilee
named nazareth
to a virgin a spouse to a man whose name
was joseph of the house of david and the
virgin's name was mary
and the angel came in unto her and said hail
hail
thou who art highly favored the lord is
with thee blessed art thou among women
and when she saw him she was troubled at
his saying and considered in her mind
what manner of greeting this should be
and the angel said unto her fear not
mary for thou hast found favor with god
and behold thou shalt conceive in thy
womb and bring forth a son and shalt
call his name jesus
he shall be great and shall be called
the son of the highest and the lord god
shall give unto him the throne of his
father david
and he shall reign over the house of
david forever
and of his kingdom there shall be no end
end
we want to focus right now on verses 26
27 and 28
and the emphasis here is on the grace of
god in verse 28 the angel said hail
which is a form of the word grace
grace thou who art highly graced the
lord is with thee
let's notice in luke 1 26-28
26-28
four evidences of the grace of god
recorded here in the scripture number
one it was the grace of god that he sent
gabriel number two it was the grace of
god that he sent gabriel to nazareth
number three it was the grace of god
that he sent gabriel to nazareth to mary
and number four it was the grace of god
that he sent gabriel to nazareth to mary
for you
and me
let's look at these four evidences now
first of all it was certainly the grace
of god that he sent gabriel now gabriel
is an important angelic messenger in the
scriptures his name means mighty man of god
god
in chapter 8 of the book of daniel
gabriel was sent to the prophet daniel
to explain to him the vision that daniel
had had about the ram and the he goat
imagine that gabriel comes from heaven
to daniel to explain to him the word of god
god
in chapter 9 of daniel gabriel returned
and explained the vision of the 70 weeks
of jewish history
he spread before daniel the panorama of
prophecy relating to the people of israel
israel
now here is an important angelic
messenger who came to the prophet daniel
to open to him the future of god's people
people
also it was the angel gabriel who came
to zacharias in luke chapter 1
when zacharias was ministering there in
the temple and he gave to zacharias the
good news that elizabeth and zacharias
would have a baby boy and this would be
john the baptist the forerunner of our
lord jesus christ now there's quite a
contrast between the coming of gabriel
to zacharias and the coming of gabriel
to mary let's look at that for just a moment
moment
i can understand gabriel coming to
daniel he was a great prophet and i can
understand him coming to zacharias he
was a priest but here he comes to mary
isn't that interesting
zacharias was an old man beyond the age
of having any children
and mary was a young woman who had not
yet been married
zacharias was a priest but mary was from
the line of david the kingly line
zacharias was in the temple when the
angel appeared to him mary was probably
at home in nazareth when gabriel came to her
her
the angel came to zacharias in the
temple in jerusalem and jerusalem was a
very important city
but as the angel came to mary at
nazareth we're going to see that
nazareth wasn't held in very high repute
zacharias responded with unbelief how
can these things be but mary responded
with faith and said well here i am may
the word of the lord be done unto me
according to god's will
isn't it beautiful that god should send
gabriel to daniel and to zacharias and
then to mary
here is an important angelic messenger
who comes with the message of god that's
the grace of god
secondly it's the grace of god that he
sent gabriel to nazareth
now nazareth did not have a very good reputation
reputation
immediately you remember john chapter 1 when
when
jesus was out calling his disciples in
verse 45
philip findeth nathanael and saith unto
him we have found him
of whom moses in the law and the
prophets did right jesus of nazareth the
son of joseph
and nathanael said unto him can there
any good thing come out of nazareth
philip said unto him come and see
well nathanael did come and see and he
was converted and became one of the
disciples now i can just hear the
tone of voice that nathanael used as
recorded in verse 46 can there any good
thing come out of nazareth you see
nazareth was in galilee of the gentiles
and the jews in judea
especially the jews in jerusalem looked
down their noses at the people up in
galilee they did not consider the jewish
people up in galilee to be really kosher
and of course the city of nazareth was
not looked upon as a very spiritual
place and so uh the saying was abroad
can any good thing come out of nazareth
well something good did come out of
nazareth mary and joseph came out of
nazareth went down to bethlehem and
there mary gave birth to the lord jesus
christ throughout his earthly life our
lord was known as jesus of nazareth he
identified himself with that
forsaken place that criticized place
that place of no real reputation he said
all right you can call me that i am
jesus of nazareth in fact he took that
word to the cross with him
pilate put a sign over the head of the
lord jesus that read this is jesus of
nazareth the king of the jews aren't you
glad that our lord identifies with the outcasts
outcasts
he identifies with the poor he
identifies with those who are of no
special reputation in fact in
philippians 2 we are told that our lord
himself made himself of no reputation
yes it was the grace of god that sent
gabriel it was the grace of god that
sent gabriel to nazareth it was the
grace of god that sent gabriel to mary
you say well he should have come to mary
she's an important person she was an
important person because god made her an
important person what do we know about
mary well she was a jewish from the
tribe of judah the family of david
she was a virgin pure and holy
she was poor
later on we'll find out that she was
unable to bring expensive sacrifices to
the temple
in fact in her song recorded in verses
46 through 55 she indicates that she was
rather lowly and poor and didn't have
much to boast about
isaiah 7 14 had promised that the
messiah would be born of a virgin
joseph was not the father of our lord
jesus christ although mary was the mother
mother
the holy spirit of god conceived the
body of the lord jesus in the womb of
the virgin mary she was engaged to
joseph and you must remember that in
jewish times engagement was just like
marriage the only way to get disengaged
would be a divorce
she was engaged to be married to joseph
now mary didn't expect an angel to show
up when the angel walked in she was
surprised a little bit frightened she
was troubled at his saying
hail thou who art highly favored the
lord is with thee blessed art thou among
women now he didn't say blessed art thou
above women he said blessed art thou
among women elizabeth said the same
thing over in verse 42 blessed art thou
among women and blessed is the fruit of
thy womb
i like the humility of mary the purity
of mary
here she simply is amazed that an angel
would come to her
amazed that he would come to her at
nazareth and bring this kind of a
greeting verse 29 says she was pondering
in her mind what kind of a greeting is
this that she should be highly favored
by the lord the word hail and the word
highly favored
are related to the word grace and this
is the first time you find grace
in the new testament you don't find the
grace of god mentioned by name
in matthew or mark but you'll find it
here in luke
it was the grace of god that he came to
mary he chose her he selected her but
remember it's the grace of god that he
came to mary for us
someone says oh i'd certainly like to be
highly favored by the lord it's
interesting that that greek word
translated highly favored is used only
one other place in the new testament
you know where it is ephesians chapter 1
and verse 6.
to the praise of the glory of his grace
through which he hath made us accepted
in the beloved same word
accepted in the beloved in other words
if you are a christian if you've trusted
jesus christ as your savior then you
have been accepted in the beloved you
are highly favored of the lord you see
this special blessing that came to mary
can come to you
please don't say well mary was a holy
person mary was a very special person
that's why god chose her no
mary tells us over in
verse 47 my spirit hath rejoiced in god
my savior she needed a savior
and this savior saved her by grace in
verse 30 fear not mary for thou has
found favor or grace with god
and so we have the grace of god extended
to marry grace is extended to people who
don't deserve it and god's grace has
been extended to us blessed art thou
well we've been blessed ephesians 1 3
blessed be the god and father of our
lord jesus christ who hath blessed us
with all spiritual blessings in heavenly
places in christ you see mary does not
have any advantage over us
we have been highly favored we have been
accepted in the beloved we have been
blessed of god with all the blessings
and god is with us
because we have the lord jesus as our
savior emmanuel
god with us have you experienced the
grace of god
god in his grace has sent the message to you
you
trust him
open your heart to him receive the grace
of god
receive the son of god by faith
thank you for listening to back to the
bible join us again tomorrow
