0:02 Heavenly Father you know the worst about
0:05 each one of us and yet you still love us
0:07 you know everything that we've done and
0:11 said and felt and thought this past week
0:14 yet you still want us to come and
0:17 worship we know that you can only accept
0:20 someone who has Clean Hands and a pure
0:23 heart and there isn't one of us who has
0:26 the confidence that we are fit to
0:30 come but for the sake of Jesus Christ we
0:32 are sure of a
0:34 welcome and therefore with confidence
0:37 with a boldness that surprises ourselves
0:40 and sometimes irritates other people we
0:43 gladly come and call you our
0:46 father and we pray that as you know
0:48 everything about us we may get to know
0:49 more about
0:52 you as you know the innermost thoughts
0:54 of our hearts we pray that you will help
0:58 us to understand your mind to discover
0:59 something this morning from your word
1:02 word that we never knew
1:04 before to stretch our
1:07 imagination to enlarge our thinking to
1:09 love you with all our
1:12 minds but we pray that you'll Deliver Us
1:15 from anything that is purely academic or
1:18 intellectual help us to translate what
1:20 we think and what we learn into practical
1:21 practical
1:24 activity into a character that is more
1:27 like Jesus every day into a life that
1:30 brings glory to your name and joy to other
1:32 other
1:34 people we pray for those who are on
1:37 holiday at this time and we ask that you
1:39 will direct them to some fellowship this
1:41 day where they can worship in spirit and in
1:42 in
1:45 truth we pray for those who must worship
1:48 you this morning lying on their backs on
1:51 a sick bed we pray for those who are
1:55 working so that we may enjoy certain
1:57 facilities and services that are
2:00 necessary to life and we we pray that
2:02 you will bless all your people this day
2:04 and add to their number so that when the
2:07 Sun goes down tonight there may be
2:09 hundreds thousands more all over the
2:13 world who have entered Your Kingdom and
2:15 who love the Lord who never did when
2:18 they woke up this morning and this we
2:23 ask in jesus' name and for his sake
2:30 God a month ago we finish studying the
2:33 first letter of John so this morning I'm
2:36 going to talk to you about the second
2:39 and the third letter of John two little
2:41 letters that come straight after one
2:43 John right towards the end of the Bible
2:45 just before the Book of Revelation if
2:46 you haven't got a Bible and would like
2:48 one just raise your hand we'll see you get
2:49 get
2:53 one the second and third letter of
2:57 John the Elder to the elect lady and her
3:00 children whom I love in the truth
3:03 and not only I but also all who know the
3:06 truth because of the truth which abides
3:10 in us and will be with us forever grace
3:14 mercy and peace will be with us from God
3:17 the father and from Jesus Christ The
3:20 Father's son in truth and
3:24 love I rejoiced greatly to find some of
3:27 your children following the truth just
3:30 as we have been commanded by the father
3:32 and now I beg you lady not as though I
3:35 were writing you a new commandment but
3:37 the one we have had from the beginning
3:39 that we love one
3:42 another and this is love that we follow his
3:43 his
3:45 Commandments this is the Commandment as
3:46 you have heard from the beginning that
3:50 you follow love for many deceivers have
3:52 gone out into the world men who will not
3:55 acknowledge the coming of Jesus Christ
3:58 in the flesh such a one is the deceiver
4:00 and the antichrist
4:02 look to yourselves that you may not lose
4:06 what you have worked for but may win a full
4:06 full
4:09 reward anyone who goes ahead and does
4:12 not abide in the doctrine of Christ does
4:14 not have
4:16 God He Who abides in the doctrine of
4:20 Christ has both the father and the
4:23 son if anyone comes to you and does not
4:26 bring this Doctrine do not receive him
4:30 into the house or give him any greeting
4:33 for He Who greets him shares his Wicked
4:36 work though I have much to write to you
4:38 I would rather not use paper and ink but
4:41 I hope to come to see you and talk with
4:44 you face to face so that our joy may be
4:47 complete the children of your elect
4:49 sister greet
4:52 you and then another short letter he
4:54 must have written at the same time when
4:56 you write all your thank you letters at
4:58 Christmas you tend to repeat yourself a
5:00 bit and the letters look look like each
5:02 other a bit so look at the second one
5:05 the Elder to the Beloved gas whom I love
5:09 in the truth beloved I pray that all may
5:11 go well with you and that you may be in
5:14 health I know that it is well with your
5:18 soul for I greatly rejoiced when some of
5:20 the Brethren arrived and testified to
5:23 the truth of your life as indeed you do
5:27 Follow The Truth No Greater Joy can I
5:30 have than this to hear the my children
5:32 follow the
5:35 truth beloved it is a loyal thing you do
5:37 when you render any service to the
5:41 Brethren especially to strangers who
5:43 have testified to your love before the
5:46 church you will do well to send them on
5:49 their Journey as befits God's service
5:52 for they have set out for his sake and
5:55 have accepted nothing from the Heathen
5:58 so we ought to support such men that we
6:01 may be fell fellow workers in the truth
6:04 I have written something to the church but
6:04 but
6:07 diores who likes to put himself first
6:09 does not acknowledge my
6:12 authority so if I come I will bring up
6:15 what he is doing prating against me with
6:18 evil words and not content with that he
6:21 refuses himself to welcome the
6:24 Brethren and also stops those who want
6:27 to welcome them and puts them out of the
6:30 church beloved do not not imitate evil
6:34 but imitate good he who does good is of
6:38 God he who does evil has not seen
6:41 God Demetrius has testimony from
6:44 everyone and from the truth itself I
6:47 testify to him too and you know my
6:50 testimony is true I had much to write to
6:52 you but I would rather not write with
6:55 pen and ink I hope to see you soon and
6:59 we will talk together face to face peace
7:02 be to you the friends greet you greet
7:04 the friends every one of
7:07 them if you like reading other people's
7:09 letters you should really enjoy the New
7:13 Testament because 21 out of 27 books are
7:16 letters and indeed letters are often
7:18 much more revealing and much more
7:21 helpful to give you insights than simply
7:24 reading a prepared paper or essay that's
7:26 why in many
7:28 autobiographies you tend to get the life
7:30 and letter
7:32 of Sono the latest one published this
7:35 week is the published correspondence of
7:38 grouo Marx I'd Lance through that the
7:40 young people know who I'm talking about
7:42 and i' Lance through that in a Bookshop
7:44 and it was very revealing to read some
7:46 of the letters that well-known comedian
7:48 has written much more revealing than
7:50 seeing his
7:52 films and in the same way God has seen
7:55 that most of the truth that he had to
7:58 give us in the New Testament came to us
8:00 in the form of letter letters some of
8:02 them are public written to a whole
8:04 church but many of them are private
8:06 written to one
8:09 individual and John's letters three of
8:11 them the first is public but the second
8:13 two are very private they're like
8:16 postcards they're short they say such
8:18 things as hope you are well hoping to
8:20 see you soon they're very typical
8:24 postcards and yet they're full of the
8:27 truth of God and they're most revealing
8:30 one is written to a lady and the other
8:31 is written to a
8:34 gentleman and I hope I won't offend
8:36 either sex by saying that the second
8:39 letter points up one of The Temptations
8:42 or weaknesses of feminine nature and the
8:44 third letter points one of the dangers
8:46 of masculine nature and that keeps the
8:49 balance so either I'm in with everybody
8:51 this morning or I've offended the lot of
8:54 you well now John the Apostle who wrote
8:57 this letter reveals as he writes how
9:00 tender how warm how sympathetic a
9:03 personality he is and yet How firm he
9:07 can be in relation to right and
9:10 wrong and yet when you read back through
9:13 the gospels and discover what kind of a
9:18 man he was by Nature the contrast is
9:20 startling when you first meet him he was
9:23 such a bad-tempered young man that Jesus
9:25 said I'm going to give you a nickname
9:29 Thunder and he called him Bones which is
9:31 Hebrew for Thunder that was the kind of
9:35 man he was he's revealed as a bigot a
9:38 man who says if he's not in arot he must
9:41 be stopped doing anything he's revealed
9:45 as a scheming ambitious man who says
9:47 Master when you get into into your
9:49 kingdom can I have the best
9:53 seat and this man wiy bad tempered
9:56 scheming ambitious bigoted becomes the
9:59 Apostle of love and quite frankly the
10:00 the first thought I had when preparing
10:03 this morning was There's Hope for me and
10:06 there's hope for you if the the Lord
10:09 Jesus can do that with a man like that
10:11 and enable him to write letters like
10:14 this then he can do it for any of us
10:17 human nature can be
10:19 changed my Baba recently said to me
10:21 human nature can't be changed and I said
10:25 that's a lie and it's a lie of the devil
10:27 actually but human nature can be changed
10:30 thank God it can or wouldn't Heaven be
10:32 miserable I wouldn't want to go to
10:33 heaven if you L were there and you
10:36 wouldn't want to go if I was there as we
10:39 are can you imagine living at Close
10:42 Quarters forever with people as they are
10:45 but if he can do this for a person and
10:47 make them this kind of character and
10:49 personality then isn't Heaven going to be
10:50 be
10:53 lovely now that'll come up again later
10:56 the first thing I ought to say really is
10:58 that both letters are about the same subject
11:00 subject
11:02 he's dealing with only one thing in both
11:04 letters I don't know if you spotted it
11:06 he's dealing with
11:10 hospitality the people you have in your
11:12 home and this is one of the most
11:15 prominent themes of the New Testament
11:17 Christians are to be given to
11:19 hospitality they are to have an Ever
11:22 open door they are to open their hearts
11:24 and homes to other
11:27 people it's even a qualification to be a
11:30 deacon or an elder in the New Testament
11:32 and a deacon or an elder who keeps his
11:35 home shut to people ought not to be in
11:38 office but there are two particular
11:40 needs for Hospitality in the New
11:43 Testament days which we don't have to
11:45 quite such a degree today here's the
11:49 first for 300 years they had no church
11:52 buildings and if some Christians didn't
11:55 open their homes to others the church
11:57 would never have
11:59 grown if Christians had kept their front
12:01 door shut there would have been no
12:04 Services no worship and we wouldn't have
12:06 been here
12:09 today now of course we are in a position
12:11 to erect Church buildings do you know
12:12 the first thing I did when I got back to
12:14 Guilford was go to mme before I went
12:16 home and I was thrilled to see what I
12:18 did see there even if it's a bit
12:20 negative at the moment but I was
12:22 thrilled to see it we're going to have a lovely
12:23 lovely
12:25 building but I hope that when we get
12:28 that building we won't stop meeting in
12:29 each other's house
12:32 homes we shall lose a great deal if we
12:34 do now from the very beginning
12:36 Christians did meet in larger buildings
12:38 as well as their homes they met in the
12:41 temple from the day of Pentecost every
12:43 day they met in borrowed lecture halls
12:46 and all kinds of large buildings but
12:48 again and again the New Testament
12:50 letters are addressed to the church that
12:51 is in your
12:53 house and every Christian should be
12:57 willing to open his home to fellowships
12:59 and not say oh well I have enough chairs
13:01 or it's too small or anything like that
13:03 or other people have a better home every
13:05 Christian should say my home is the
13:08 Lord's home for the Lord's people given to
13:09 to
13:11 hospitality now they needed it because
13:13 they had no church
13:15 buildings but they also needed it for
13:17 another reason there were two kinds of
13:20 ministers in the New Testament those who
13:22 stayed put and those who moved on and
13:26 there still are and some people are much
13:27 better if they move on and some people
13:29 are much better if they stay
13:32 put the pastors and teachers are better
13:35 if they stay in one place and go on
13:37 teaching and go on pastoring the
13:39 prophets and evangelists and preachers
13:42 are better moving on bringing a fresh
13:45 voice and a Fresh Approach and so in the
13:47 New Testament you've got a combination
13:49 of ministers who stay put and ministers
13:52 who move around and that's a really
13:53 healthy picture and I hope we shall
13:56 always have it but the ministers who
13:59 move around need to stay somewhere and
14:02 in those days there were no hotels no
14:05 nice places to stay there were ins but
14:07 they were infested with Vermin and
14:11 disease and were known as immoral places
14:13 and an inkeeper was little better than a
14:16 pimp and so the Christian ministers
14:18 didn't stay in those
14:21 places and there was a real need for
14:23 them to go somewhere and have a roof
14:25 over their heads and therefore two and
14:28 three John are written to Christians is
14:30 describing the need for giving
14:34 Hospitality to preachers evangelists moving
14:36 moving
14:39 around now then comes the crunch I told
14:42 you that two John was written to a lady
14:45 and three John to a men and here I tread
14:48 very wearily and delicately and I hope I
14:53 tactfully behind every Act of
14:56 hospitality lie two Christian
14:59 principles love and
15:01 and
15:06 truth and our Hospitality must reflect
15:10 both Hospitality in a Christian home is
15:14 not just an act of love it is an act of
15:17 Truth and if you underline the two words
15:18 Truth and Love in these two letters
15:21 you'll find they're all the way through
15:24 I love you in truth you're following the
15:27 truth follow love truth love truth
15:31 love love opens the door of your home
15:34 and Truth shuts
15:37 it and Hospitality in a Christian Home
15:40 must walk a knife edge between the two
15:43 knowing when to open the door in love
15:46 and when to shut it in
15:49 Truth Christian Hospitality can be too
15:55 narrow for love and too wide for
15:58 truth our front door should be a certain
16:02 width no wider no narrower there are
16:05 limits to Christian hospitality and we
16:07 should fling our doors open right to the
16:10 Limit but not an inch Beyond it now that
16:13 may sound very startling to some of you
16:16 let me then elaborate it as John does to
16:20 the lady John says your hospitality is
16:22 in danger of being too
16:26 wide to the men he says your hospitality
16:30 is in danger of being too narrow
16:31 and speaking for the men I'm quite sure
16:34 he's right about the men and I'll leave
16:37 the ladies to speak for the ladies
16:41 putting it differently ladies tend to
16:44 overemphasize love at the expense of
16:48 Truth and men tend to overemphasize
16:50 Truth at the expense of
16:53 Love ladies will tend to open the home
16:57 to too many people men will tend to open
16:59 it to too few
17:01 and that's presumably why God in his
17:03 Mercy arranged that a man should marry a
17:05 woman and start a home together and then
17:08 they can argue about it and decide who
17:10 they open to and who they closed to in
17:13 other words the lady's attitude can be too
17:14 too
17:16 soft by allowing their heart to rule
17:19 them and the man's attitude can be too
17:22 hard by allowing his head to rule him
17:25 and the balance is truth and
17:29 love together and let the two things
17:31 determine your
17:34 hospitality in the L's case the lack of
17:36 Truth would lead to wrong
17:39 belief in the man's case the lack of
17:41 Love would lead to wrong Behavior now
17:44 that's simple and God in his Mercy put
17:46 the two letters together so we'd get the
17:49 balance and the reason I'm taking both
17:51 this morning even if we have to pack it
17:52 in is because I don't want you to think
17:54 I'm unbalanced one way or the other I'm
17:56 neither anti- feminine nor anti
17:59 masculine I'm for them both both now
18:01 let's take the second letter and the
18:02 ladies can listen to this the men can
18:05 have 20 minutes
18:08 rest who is the elder who writes the
18:10 letter many people have thought that as
18:12 well as John the Apostle there was some
18:14 other shadowy figure called John the
18:16 Elder you'll find this in school
18:18 textbooks and other things but will you
18:21 take my word for it there is no evidence
18:24 whatsoever for anybody other than John
18:27 the Apostle being the Elder who wrote
18:29 this why did he not call himself the
18:32 Apostle because when a man is traveling
18:35 around as a missionary he is an apostle
18:37 when he settles down in one place he's an
18:38 an
18:41 elder so when he's moving around as an
18:44 itinerant preacher he's an apostle when
18:46 he's in one Fellowship he's an elder
18:49 which is why the Apostle Peter writing
18:52 the letter of Peter to the church says I
18:55 am your fellow Elder so it's John the
18:57 Apostle just want to clear that up in
18:59 case any of you'd heard the other but
19:01 who is the
19:05 lady this elect lady and Scholars and
19:08 commentators divide a great deal over
19:10 whether this is one individual a lady
19:13 and her physical children or whether
19:16 this is John's way of talking to a
19:19 church in many cases the word you in
19:21 this letter is plural not singular and
19:24 many of the remarks seem to be addressed
19:27 to a church rather than a lady what's
19:28 the answer I think the answer is both are
19:29 are
19:33 right I imagine that here is an a
19:37 widow who has a home and in that home
19:39 meets a church and this Widow has
19:42 spiritual as well as physical children
19:44 she's one of those chosen ladies of God
19:47 who's done such a lot for other people
19:49 in the name of the Lord and she's got a
19:52 church in her house and John writes to this
19:53 this
19:56 lady and her
19:58 children and he says this it could be
20:00 misunderstood by unbelievers indeed it
20:02 was he says I love
20:05 you now for an apostle to be writing to
20:07 an elect lady and saying I love you do
20:09 you know that in the early days because
20:11 the Christians used the word love so
20:14 much there were all sorts of wild rumors
20:16 about orges and other things that went
20:20 on in church was so misunderstood people
20:23 who don't know pure love have no idea
20:27 what we mean by it and John says to this
20:29 lady I love you
20:31 he also says to the men I love you that
20:32 could be
20:35 misunderstood but you know Jesus was a
20:37 marvelous example of one who loved men
20:41 and women perfectly those who have been
20:44 transformed by Jesus can say to all men
20:45 and all women I love
20:49 you but you notice that it's a love in the
20:50 the
20:53 truth now what does that mean let's
20:55 first look at the word truth to Love In
20:58 Truth means to love someone as they really
21:00 really
21:03 are one of the reasons for getting to
21:06 know each other well enough before you
21:07 get married and having a period of
21:10 Engagement is to know each other long
21:12 enough to be sure that you love each
21:14 other as you
21:17 are and not to have an image on a
21:19 pedestal a kind of dream that you've
21:21 projected onto the other person that
21:23 will be shattered very quickly when
21:25 you're living in the close quarters of
21:28 marriage to love each other as you are
21:32 to Love In Truth means to love a person
21:34 as they really
21:38 are but John says more than this he says
21:41 I love you in the
21:44 truth not just I love you in truth I
21:46 love you truly but I love you in the
21:49 truth now what's he meaning he's meaning
21:51 the truth of Christianity the truth of
21:54 Christ and to love someone in the truth
21:58 means to love them as they really are as
22:00 a Christian and you know what that means
22:03 it means you know the worst and the best
22:05 about them and you love them what is the
22:08 worst that you know the worst that you
22:10 know is that the person you love is a
22:13 sinner with a fallen nature like
22:19 yourself and capable of any sin in the
22:21 book therefore you are never
22:25 disillusioned or shattered or
22:29 disappointed you love them in the truth
22:31 and the first truth about your fellow
22:34 Christian is that they are a sinner and
22:37 capable of the worst and therefore
22:40 whatever they do you love them in the
22:42 truth it's tremendous when you can love
22:45 a person like that because the worst
22:47 that you discover doesn't destroy your
22:49 love God loves us in the truth he knows
22:51 the worst about me knows the worst about
22:54 you and he still loves he loves me in
22:56 the truth he's got no delusions about me
22:58 you may have but he hasn't and he loves
23:01 me and that's
23:03 wonderful but there's something more
23:04 about a Christian you can love an
23:07 unbeliever in the truth as far as the
23:09 worst goes but now let me tell you what
23:11 the best is about your fellow Christian
23:13 the best is that that person is going to
23:16 be perfect that person has Christ's
23:18 spirit in their heart and he's making
23:20 them a new person and they're going to
23:22 be glorified as well as Justified and
23:24 you can love them in the truth for what
23:25 they're going to
23:29 be now a love like that has no delusions
23:33 it believes the worst and the best it
23:35 believes the worst of what they are in
23:37 themselves and the best of what they are
23:39 in Christ and can look at a Christian
23:43 and say I love you in the truth I know
23:45 the worst and the best about you I know
23:47 the worst of which you're capable and I
23:49 know the best of which you're going to
23:52 be and I love you in the truth you can't
23:55 love anybody like that outside the truth
23:58 it's the truth of Christ about a man or
24:00 a woman every one of us is capable of
24:03 the most dark and terrible
24:06 deeds and every one of us Believers is
24:10 going to be like Christ and you can love
24:12 someone in the truth apart from anything
24:14 else you know that you're not going to
24:16 have to put up with their faults forever
24:18 you can look forward to the day when
24:20 they're perfect in character they can
24:22 look forward to the day when you are I
24:25 love you in the truth I'm spending too
24:26 much time on that but it's lovely isn't
24:30 it and when you do that John then says
24:33 grace mercy and peace will be with
24:36 us how do you get grace mercy and peace
24:39 in a Fellowship of Christians when you
24:41 love each other in the
24:44 truth when you know the worst and you
24:45 still love each other and when you look
24:47 to the best and love each other for it
24:50 and then grace mercy and peace will be
24:54 with you well now that's Love In Truth
24:56 John now says in the Greek language
24:59 Eureka it's translated find in verse
25:02 four but the literal word is Eureka I
25:04 can never read that without thinking of
25:06 dear old Archimedes in his Beth and
25:08 jumping out with great joy and running
25:10 down the street with a bath to towel or
25:12 without I don't know and shouting I
25:13 found it I've discovered it the
25:15 displacement of a body in water equals
25:18 or whatever it was he did discover now
25:20 John says I have the same feeling as
25:21 that no he wouldn't know about
25:24 Archimedes or would he might have done
25:25 somebody tell me afterwards whether
25:27 Archimedes was born in time but John says
25:28 says
25:32 Eureka I rejoiced greatly to discover
25:34 what that some of your children are
25:36 following the
25:38 truth it's great when people follow the
25:41 truth when they live by reality the
25:44 truth as it is in Christ he said I am
25:46 the truth and to follow the truth is to
25:49 follow Christ and to follow Christ is to
25:51 follow the truth and the nearer you get
25:53 to him the more truth you'll know about
25:56 yourself as you are and the more truth
25:58 you'll know about him as he is and
26:00 therefore the more truth you know about
26:02 what you're going to be they're
26:04 following the truth you notice that
26:07 follow means behave as well as believe
26:10 some people follow the truth up here but
26:13 nowhere else that's not what John means
26:15 to follow the truth is to live it
26:19 out to keep the balance John now says
26:23 and I beg you dear lady follow love keep
26:26 these two things in perfect balance the
26:29 longer I live the more I come to the
26:32 conclusion that the secret of real
26:35 maturity is balance and that when we're
26:37 young we like to go to
26:40 extremes we like to go after one thing
26:43 or another but mature people keep things
26:47 in balance and these two things Love and
26:50 Truth a mature Christian keeps them in
26:53 that delicate and Perfect Balance I'm
26:56 thrilled to discover that you follow the
27:00 truth I beg you to follow love keep them
27:03 both and you know what love is and here
27:05 he reminds this woman and you need to
27:08 remind ladies that love is not how you
27:11 feel but how you
27:13 act it's not a matter of having great
27:16 feelings of liking towards someone it's
27:18 a matter of doing your duty of keeping
27:22 his Commandments that's love and we must
27:24 rescue the word love from the
27:26 sentimental emotions which have now
27:28 become so attached to it that it's
27:31 almost excluded anything else and bring
27:34 love back to the simple matter of
27:37 loyalty the kind of loyalty that sticks
27:39 to a person for better for worse for
27:42 richer for poorer in sickness and in
27:46 health and does not let go and loves and
27:50 cherishes to the end that's love in fact
27:52 it would almost be a good thing if
27:56 wherever the Bible says love we said
27:57 loyalty because that's what what love
28:01 really is loyalty to a person it's not
28:04 just having your heart go twice as fast
28:06 as usual at the sight of someone it's
28:10 being loyal to them loyal to them and
28:12 sticking by them through thick and
28:16 thin love divorced from Duty will run
28:18 Riot and Duty divorced from love will
28:21 starve that's not mine that's a gem of a
28:23 man called plumber do you like it love
28:27 divorced from Duty will run riot and
28:30 Duty divorced from love will
28:33 starve now he comes to the real business
28:38 of the letter the sad fact is that not
28:41 everybody in the world in which we live
28:44 follows the
28:47 truth I find it saddening with my own
28:49 children to find out how easily in their
28:53 earliest years they discovered that
28:57 telling lies could protect them orus
29:00 came naturally nobody I know ever taught
29:02 them to tell
29:05 lies but we like every parent had to
29:08 correct them when we knew they did and
29:11 say now that's not true is
29:15 it unless the sad situation is that many
29:18 deceivers have gone out into the world
29:19 many people are saying things that are
29:22 not true they don't want to know the
29:24 truth either about God or about
29:27 themselves they are in a state of rebell
29:29 I to the truth and they don't want it
29:32 and therefore they devise cunningly devised
29:33 devised
29:36 fables which are just not
29:39 true and John knows that they will come
29:42 to this lady and her children and above
29:44 all he says they will not tell you the
29:48 truth about Christ what is the truth
29:50 well I've given it to you in 1 John
29:53 Jesus is divine and human he's God and
29:57 man perfectly one both together fully
30:00 God fully men and those who are against
30:03 the truth will either deny his Humanity
30:05 or his
30:08 divinity in John's day they denied his
30:09 humanity and said he didn't really come
30:12 in the flesh he was just a
30:17 ghost but in our day they they deny his
30:20 divinity and in our day they say he was
30:23 a great man but he wasn't God he may
30:25 have been a great teacher doing his own
30:26 thing and leading people and setting
30:27 them free
30:31 but he wasn't God now there are a lot of
30:34 people in the world who are telling us
30:39 that Jesus is not fully God or not fully
30:43 men and they will not acknowledge this
30:45 truth it isn't that they deny it they
30:48 won't acknowledge it may I say something
30:50 very strongly and
30:53 firmly you must not only listen to what
30:56 a preacher says You must listen what is
30:58 the truth
31:00 well I've given it to you in 1 John
31:03 Jesus is divine and human he's God and
31:07 Men perfectly one both together fully
31:10 God fully men and those who are against
31:13 the truth will either deny his Humanity
31:15 or his
31:18 divinity in John's day they denied his
31:19 humanity and said he didn't really come
31:22 in the flesh he was just a
31:26 ghost but in our day they div they deny
31:28 his divinity
31:30 and in our day they say he was a great
31:33 man but he wasn't God he may have been a
31:35 great teacher doing his own thing and
31:38 leading people and setting them free but
31:39 he wasn't
31:42 God now there are a lot of people in the
31:45 world who are telling us that Jesus is
31:49 not fully God or not fully
31:53 men and they will not acknowledge this
31:55 truth it isn't that they deny it they
31:57 won't acknowledge it
32:00 may I say something very strongly and
32:03 firmly you must not only listen to what
32:05 a preacher says You must listen to what
32:07 he does not
32:10 say because it is often in what he does
32:13 not say that he goes astray from the
32:16 truth it is what he does not
32:19 acknowledge that is important look for
32:21 the gaps in what a man says not just
32:24 what he says but what he carefully leaves
32:25 leaves
32:29 out and now now says John to this lady
32:33 your door must be shut absolutely
32:36 tight against someone who is not there
32:38 to preach the
32:41 truth that is the limit of Christian
32:43 Hospitality they may be without food
32:45 they may be without a bed you must not
32:48 take pity close the door now that's a
32:51 hard thing to say and it would take
32:53 Grace in a woman to close the door at
32:56 that point but why should one do that
33:00 it's seems such an unchristian act the
33:02 answer is
33:05 twofold a man who's not preaching the
33:09 truth is doing a wicked
33:12 work John Wesley came across such a man
33:15 and he said I have met murderers of the
33:17 body and I have preached to them and
33:20 they have responded to Grace but these
33:22 are murderers of men's
33:25 Souls it's far worse to kill a man's
33:27 Soul than his body you kill his body
33:29 you're doing something that affects him only
33:31 only
33:33 temporarily only in this world but to
33:35 kill his soul you've done something that
33:38 destroys him
33:40 forever and therefore there are people
33:43 who preach false views about Christ whom
33:45 you must never have in for a meal you
33:49 must not say come in you must close the
33:52 door you know who I mean don't you you
33:55 must say there is not a welcome here my
33:58 dear lady don't even welome welcome him
34:01 don't even greet him for to say goodbye
34:03 to him is to say God be with you and to
34:04 say good morning is to say I hope you
34:08 have a good morning don't even greet
34:11 him and then John has run out of paper
34:12 he's reached the end of a small sheet of
34:15 parchment which held about 300 words and
34:17 he says I have so much I want to say but
34:19 I'm not going to put it on on paper and
34:22 write it in ink I want to come and talk
34:24 this out with you and then he says I
34:27 want to come and see you so that my Joy
34:30 may be complete why is his Joy not
34:33 complete the answer is this dear lady
34:35 some of your children are following the
34:38 truth I Rejoice to find some of them
34:42 like this but I want to come to help all
34:43 of you to follow the truth and then my
34:46 joy is complete well that's the first
34:49 letter or the second rather now let's go
34:50 to the
34:53 third John has the same love for men and
34:57 women like Christ in Christ there is is
35:01 no male or female and so he says to gas
35:04 I love you in the
35:08 truth now gas was a lovely man a lovely
35:11 man every Church of which I've been
35:14 Minister and this is now the 28th of
35:15 which I've been Pastor it's all right
35:17 they didn't kick me out after a few
35:19 weeks but um in the Methodist Ministry
35:21 you have a number at a time as you know
35:24 and in every church every one of those 28
35:25 28
35:28 churches I can think of a
35:31 guas I can think of a man who fits this
35:35 description and I thank God for such men
35:40 his character shines out as a lovely man
35:42 and yet John doesn't say I love you
35:44 because you are
35:47 lovely he says the same here I love you
35:48 in the
35:51 truth now this is the answer within any
35:53 church and any group and any Fellowship
35:55 there are some people you will like more
35:58 than others at the human level you're
36:00 bound to we're different in temperament
36:02 and Outlook and background there are
36:04 some people you take to you
36:07 like and if there is only liking in a
36:09 church then it is not a church it's a
36:12 club and it will be a club with cliches
36:14 in it and Hospitality will be too
36:17 limited and homes will only be open to
36:19 people of the same type and that's not a
36:22 fellowship but when you love people in
36:24 the truth you don't love them because
36:26 you like them you don't love them
36:27 because they're lovely you love them in
36:29 the truth and the truth is in every
36:32 Christian the truth abides in US says
36:35 John so you love everyone and John loves
36:38 gas in the truth the same as he loved
36:40 everybody else in the
36:46 truth now he says I pray that all may go
36:48 well sometimes I've said to a person are
36:51 you well and they said oh yes I'm much
36:55 better now thank you and I've added well
36:57 I meant more than that
36:59 to the unbeliever the phrase are you
37:01 well means simply his
37:04 body and if his body is well he says yes
37:07 I'm fine but the Christian knows that a
37:10 man is more than a body he's a
37:14 soul body and soul together and to be
37:16 really well both need to be fit and
37:18 healthy and
37:20 strong the world is full of people who
37:23 are well in body but sick in Soul
37:26 desperately sick they need a surgeon
37:28 they need a drastic operation and a
37:30 black heart removed and a white one put
37:33 in transplant but a new heart not a
37:36 secondhand one and there they are
37:37 they're walking about the streets you'll
37:41 see them they're sick in Soul study the
37:43 faces in a London tube train next time
37:45 you're taking a journey they're well in
37:49 body but you'll see sickness in Soul
37:51 fear boredom disillusionment
37:53 disillusionment
37:57 merice and so John says to GS I I want
37:59 all to be well with
38:03 you I know it is well with your soul
38:05 isn't that terrific you know the song
38:07 Don't You It is Well it Is Well with My
38:09 Soul there's nothing like feeling
38:12 spiritually fit and healthy it's great
38:14 to feel physically fit and to be
38:16 refreshed and renewed in body but to be
38:20 well with the soul when peace like a
38:24 river it is well it is well next time a
38:27 Christian says are you well say very
38:29 well thank you but say it about your
38:33 soul first and so John says now I know
38:35 you're well in Soul I want you to be
38:37 well in body
38:40 too may I underline that a Christian can
38:41 be spiritually healthy but not
38:44 physically healthy do you notice that it
38:46 doesn't follow
38:48 automatically there are those who
38:49 believe that if everything's right
38:51 spiritually everything will be right
38:54 physically it doesn't
38:57 follow it is well with your soul G is
38:59 I'm going to pray that you may have
39:02 health too do you notice he says I pray
39:05 about it health is physical but it's a
39:07 thing to pray about as well we should
39:09 pray about everything God made our
39:12 bodies as well as our souls so we pray
39:14 for the whole lot we have a concern for
39:17 the whole men because we believe in
39:20 Souls we don't neglect people's bodies
39:22 and because we believe they have bodies
39:24 we don't neglect their souls do you
39:27 remember Paul writing to Timothy
39:28 he says Timothy I'm a bit concerned
39:31 about your tummy trouble I advise you to
39:34 take a little wine for your stomach sake
39:36 hasten to add that he meant him to rub
39:40 it in but um no he didn't actually
39:42 that's just for for those who are a bit
39:44 worried about the text but Paul said
39:46 look I'm concerned about you
39:49 Timothy I'm concerned about your
39:53 body this was our Lord's own way Jesus
39:55 preached to a great crowd of people for
39:57 three days and then he didn't make an
40:00 appeal do you know what he said he
40:01 didn't say now let's have an act of
40:03 dedication he said you know these people
40:04 are hungry they haven't had anything to
40:07 eat we better find them some food isn't
40:10 that lovely concern for souls and bodies
40:13 This is Love guas you're well in your
40:16 soul I hope and pray that your body will
40:18 get bit better had he been overdoing it
40:20 was he tired in the Lord's service what
40:24 would gone wrong it is well with your
40:27 soul now he says I know that you're a
40:29 man who follows the truth and everybody
40:31 else knows it the Brethren tell me
40:33 everybody tells me there could be few
40:35 greater tributes to a man than that he
40:37 follows the
40:41 truth we might say he's a true man he's
40:44 a true friend he's a true Christian same
40:49 thing true ringing true that's
40:52 guys now he says not only do you follow
40:54 truth but you follow love you welcome
40:57 preachers you welcome these Christians
40:59 who go around they've left home and
41:01 family for the Lord's sake not for their
41:04 own ambition or gain but for his sake
41:06 and they refuse to take anything from
41:08 the heathens so they are dependent on Christian
41:14 charity I believe that this is a
41:17 fundamental principle of the Lord's work
41:18 that the Lord's work should be
41:22 financially supported by the Lord's
41:24 people otherwise it looks like
41:26 commercialism I remember when Billy Rah
41:28 came here the number of people I met who
41:30 said how much is he going to get out of
41:32 it well of course he didn't take a
41:35 hapney for his trips to Britain that
41:37 there might be no ground for anyone
41:40 thinking it's commercialism but these
41:42 traveling preachers they refused to take
41:46 any money even if it was offered from
41:49 unbelievers they said no we want you to
41:52 have the gospel free Paul did the same
41:54 and I believe a Church's Finance should
41:57 be run the same way
41:59 I have reservations therefore about
42:02 official Chaplan and other
42:04 things I even wonder whether we should
42:07 expect the state to pay for teaching
42:09 Christianity in
42:12 schools these men took nothing from the
42:15 Heathen they said we will go out for the
42:18 Lord's sake we'll rely on him to provide
42:22 for our needs through his people and gas
42:24 was one of those who was in a position
42:26 to provide for their needs
42:29 let's make it quite certain that if this
42:31 Christian lives by faith it's because
42:34 that one lives by works do you see what
42:36 I mean if this Christian is living
42:39 believing that God will provide it is
42:41 because this Christian is living as a
42:45 provider for God and this is the pattern
42:48 and both are living by faith one because
42:51 God told them to live on gifts and the
42:55 other because God Cho told them to give
42:57 and the two become part partners and
42:59 sharers in the work and guas was a
43:03 sharer in the task he never left his
43:05 place but he shared in the missionary
43:09 work and every penny you give here to
43:11 keep a missionary somewhere else makes
43:14 you a partner in Mission now here we
43:17 come to a rather nasty person isn't it
43:19 happy that the clock has gone round I
43:21 don't need to spend long time on him
43:23 diot trophies he's as nasty a character
43:26 as guas was nice he couldn't be Ed on
43:29 his teaching his truth was all right but
43:32 his love just wasn't there he was a man
43:33 who wanted to be boss of that little
43:36 church he liked to have the first place
43:38 he didn't want any Rivals he didn't want
43:40 anybody else he didn't want any other
43:42 preachers he didn't want anybody but
43:45 himself and so he wouldn't acknowledge
43:47 even the Apostle John talked a lot of
43:50 nonsense about him it says he wouldn't
43:53 welcome any other preacher and if his
43:55 church members gave Hospitality to a
43:57 visiting preacher preacher he turned
44:00 them off the membership role incredible
44:03 men and he was the preacher here and
44:06 diates is a nasty character and John
44:10 says he's overemphasizing Truth at the
44:12 expense of
44:14 love the women are opening their doors
44:17 too wide and he's shutting it too tight
44:20 he lacks love they lack
44:23 truth you see the balance again and so
44:26 he says don't imitate people like that
44:30 I'll tell you who to imitate Demetrius
44:33 he's a man is true if you want someone
44:36 to follow follow him I've come to the
44:39 conclusion that people learn more by
44:41 imitation than
44:43 instruction don't know if that strikes
44:45 you but I look at my children you know
44:47 they pick up far more from me
44:50 unfortunately from imitation than
44:52 instruction I tell them to do things but
44:55 they do what I do instead and they
44:57 imitate we mimic the literal word here
45:00 is mimic most of the things you do you
45:02 mimic that's how you learn that's
45:04 perfectly good it's a good way of
45:07 learning and in the New Testament Paul
45:09 dares to say imitate me as I imitate
45:13 Christ it's how you learn copy me now
45:15 copy those who do good not those who do
45:19 evil copy Demetrius not
45:22 diates I haven't had a diophy in every
45:25 church I've been in thank God I haven't
45:27 occasionally such thorns in the flesh come
45:28 come
45:33 along but John says imitate this man not
45:36 that man learn to walk the Christian
45:38 Life by watching a good Christian doing
45:41 the same thing so he finishes the letter
45:45 your peace you notice that joy in the
45:47 previous letter is related to having
45:50 truth peace is related to having love
45:53 can you imagine that church where diophy
45:56 was can you imagine that church meetings
45:58 can you imagine the divisions I can see
46:01 them saying I like cifas I like Apollos
46:03 I like Paul and comparing ministers you
46:06 can see all that coming and so he says
46:08 peace be to
46:11 you if you get love and truth in Balance
46:14 you'll get joy and peace in the
46:16 church if your truth is right you'll
46:19 have joy if your love is right you have
46:21 peace isn't this
46:24 lovely let me close by making a
46:28 statement publicly definitely of this
46:33 church Let It Be widely known that our
46:38 homes our church and our Pulpit are wide
46:42 open to any servant of the gospel of
46:45 Christ let it also be known that our
46:47 homes and our church are tight
46:50 shut against those who pervert the
46:51 teaching of
46:55 Jesus that's our Hospitality our
46:56 Christian Duty
46:59 it is a knife edge to walk may God give
47:02 us wisdom to know where the line is and
47:13 pray oh God our Father your hus your
47:17 word always lays Upon Us duties that are
47:20 too great for us burdens and
47:23 responsibilities that are too heavy and
47:27 our poor feeble Minds hesitate to draw
47:29 this line that must be drawn and the
47:31 limit to our
47:34 Hospitality oh God our heavenly father
47:36 we come to you now because you never
47:38 command anything without giving the
47:42 grace and the strength to do it and we
47:45 ask now that you will help us as we
47:46 welcome your
47:49 servants from time to time from all over
47:54 the world help us to balance Truth and
47:56 Love and above all we pray that in our
47:59 attitude and relationships to each other
48:03 we may love one another in the truth for
48:12 amen from time to time parents bring
48:14 babies to
48:17 church and they do so not as a kind of
48:21 coming out ceremony or a naming ceremony
48:22 and this has nothing to do with
48:24 christening it's not a kind of dry
48:26 cleaning as somebody put it
48:28 this is bringing a baby that God has first
48:30 first
48:34 given and giving the baby back to God
48:36 it's the most solemn and serious thing
48:38 to do really because there's nothing
48:41 more precious to parents than their baby
48:43 and to give away the thing that is most
48:46 precious to you as a very big gift when
48:48 you do it you say God this baby is not
48:50 ours from now on it's
48:53 yours he's yours to do whatever you wish
48:55 with him and whatever you do we shall
48:57 never never say anything we shall not
48:59 want him for
49:01 ourselves if in our old age you want him
49:03 the other side of the world preaching
49:06 the gospel We shalln't complain he's
49:09 yours and we are going to be foster
49:12 parents bringing up this baby for you as
49:14 moses' mother brought up Moses for
49:17 Pharaoh's daughter that's the big thing
49:19 that Barry and darene have come to do
49:21 this morning and bringing little Andrew
49:24 Robert back to God God gave him and now
49:27 God is getting him back again will you
49:29 turn to the end of your hym
