This content explains the angelic announcement to Mary, highlighting Jesus Christ as the Savior, who is great and the eternal King, offering peace and freedom from fear to those who believe in Him.
[Music]
how would you respond if an angel
suddenly stepped into your home and
brought you a special message from god
well you would probably respond the way
mary responded
the record is found in luke chapter 1
beginning at verse 26
and in the sixth month that means the
sixth month after john the baptist was conceived
conceived
the angel gabriel was sent from god into
a city of galilee named nazareth to a
virgin espouse to a man whose name was
joseph of the house of david and the
virgin's name was mary
and the angel came in unto her and said
hail thou who art highly favored the
lord is with thee blessed art thou among women
women
and when she saw him she was troubled at
his saying and considered in her mind
what manner of greeting this should be
you see mary's response shows her
humility she certainly never expected to
meet an angel in person
but it also shows her humanity
she had real feelings of perplexity and fear
fear
but gabriel soon calmed her fears by
sharing the wonderful news that he had
come from heaven to bring
the angel said unto her fear not mary
for thou hast found favor with god this
is the first time you find the word
grace in the new testament
back in verse 28 the words hail and
highly favored are a form of the word
grace but this is the first time you
actually find the word grace in the new testament
testament
fear not mary for thou hast found grace
with god and behold thou shalt conceive
in thy womb and bring forth a son
and shalt call his name jesus he shall
be great and shall be called the son of
the highest
and the lord shall give unto him the
throne of his father david and he shall
reign over the house of jacob forever
and of his kingdom there shall be no end
now please note that this message is
about the lord jesus christ it's not
about mary
this is why the message calmed her fears
fear not is one of the key messages in
the story of the gospel of jesus christ
in fact seven times in the gospel of
luke you'll find the lord jesus or
someone saying
fear not
the angel said to zacharias fear not thy
prayer is heard luke 1 13.
to the shepherds in chapter 2 and verse
10 fear not for behold i bring you good
tidings of great joy which shall be to
all people
our lord said to peter in chapter 5
verse 10 fear not from henceforth thou
shalt catch men
to jairus in chapter 8 verse 50 he said
fear not and to the disciples in chapter
12 twice he said fear not you know
people today are afraid
and yet the answer to your fears
is the grace of god
and the grace of god brings to us the
son of god
you see you and i can just like mary
experience the grace of god and the
peace of god if only we'll understand
and believe
what the bible has to say about jesus christ
christ
notice the facts that the angel revealed
about jesus christ
in verses 30 and 31 he is the savior
and the angel said unto her fear not mary
mary
for thou hast found favor or grace with
god and behold thou shalt conceive in
thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt
call his name jesus now the name jesus
means jehovah is salvation
the name jesus simply means savior
later on
joseph was going to get the message
matthew 1 21 thou shalt call his name
jesus for he shall save his people from
their sins
now people are afraid today because of sin
sin
they aren't afraid of sin because they
run ahead and commit sin the way they
feel like it but they're afraid of the consequences
consequences
guilt and fear go together when adam and
eve sinned they ran away from god
because they were guilty and afraid
and people today are afraid the
consequences of sin they're afraid of
the future they're afraid the past may
catch up with them they're afraid that
they aren't prepared for the future
people are afraid and we need a savior
and jesus christ is the savior
now these verses reveal to us not only
his name jesus but his nature
he is both god and man behold thou shalt
conceive in thy womb
mary was the mother of the lord jesus
our lord jesus was the son of mary
he had perfect humanity now the perfect
humanity didn't come from mary it came
from the holy spirit of god through mary
mary as a virgin experience the miracle
of conceiving the lord jesus christ in
her womb
isaiah chapter 7 verse 14
therefore the lord himself shall give
you a sign behold a virgin shall
conceive and bear a son and shall call
his name emmanuel which means god with us
us
and so our lord jesus by nature has
humanity but not only is he the son of
mary in verse 31 verse 32 tells us he's
the son of the highest
now the highest is a phrase that luke
likes to use seven times you find it in
the gospel of luke it means god
glory to god in the highest and on earth
peace good will toward men jesus christ
is the son of the highest he is
therefore god now we're told this quite
plainly over in verse 35 the holy spirit
shall come upon thee and the power of
the highest shall overshadow thee
therefore also that holy thing
which shall be born of thee shall be
called the son of god notice now jesus
christ is the son of mary as far as his
humanity is concerned he is the son of
the highest and the son of god as far as
his deity is concerned
he is the savior and in order to be the
savior he has to be both god and man
isaiah 9 6 says unto us a child is born
now that's the humanity of the lord
jesus it goes on to say unto us a son is
given now that's the deity of the lord
jesus here we have a miracle
that god comes in human flesh
to this earth born as a baby the creator
becomes a baby
the god of the universe
becomes a baby in a manger now this is a miracle
miracle
all we can do is bow and adore we cannot explain
explain
he is the son of god but he is also god
come in human flesh he's the savior
now he was the savior of mary she tells
us in verse 46 my soul doth magnify the
lord not myself and my spirit hath
rejoiced in god my savior in other words
mary needed a savior even though she
gave birth to the lord jesus christ who
is the savior she herself needed a
savior nowhere in the word of god are we
told that mary was sinless she was born
just like all the rest of us and she had
to have a savior and she rejoiced to be
able to say that god was her savior
jesus christ is the savior now can you
say he's my savior
throughout the new testament epistles
paul talks about our savior our savior
the lord jesus christ mary talks about
my savior is he your savior have you
trusted him
fact number one he is the savior fact
number two verse 32 he is great he shall
be great
now he does not say that mary shall be great
great
she is blessed she is honored
we hold her in high regard but we do not
say that mary is great even john the
baptist verse 15 for he shall be great
in the sight of the lord doesn't say
john the baptist shall be great he shall
be great in the sight of the lord and
indeed he was one day the lord jesus
said that john the baptist was the
greatest of the prophets nobody like him
nobody like him born of woman but it
doesn't say john the baptist shall be
great it says he shall be great in the
sight of the lord doesn't say mary shall
be great it says that jesus shall be
great now certainly he's great in his
person he shall be great and shall be
called the son of the highest we've
already looked at that little phrase
he's the son of the highest he was
conceived verse 35 by the power
of the highest
john the baptist in verse 76 is called
the prophet of the highest
and when the angelic host came to the
shepherds they said glory to god in the highest
highest
there's a great deal being said these
days about
excellence aiming for the highest well
we aren't aiming high enough
god is the highest and jesus christ is
the son of the highest he is
is
great he's great in his person
he is god come in human flesh this had
never been done before it has never been
done since it is the miracle of our
lord's conception his incarnation
he is born of the virgin mary certainly
the lord jesus was great in his message
he brings the message of
salvation from sin and eternal life as a
gift from god he's great in his power
he's great in his redemption
paul says that he is great in mercy and
great in his love he's great in his
promises he shall be great may i ask you
a personal question is jesus christ
great in your life
who is the greatest person in your life
some rock star some athletic star some
actor or actress some author some
entertainer who is the greatest person
in your life
well the angel says he shall be great
great
he is the savior
fact number one he is great fact number two
two
he is the king fact number three
the lord god shall give unto him the
throne of his father david
and he shall reign over the house of
jacob forever and of his kingdom there
shall be no end now this takes us back
to second samuel chapter 7.
you may want to read this entire chapter
at your leisure david wanted to build a
house for the lord and god said no david
you're not going to build my house but
your son is going to build my house this
of course was solomon
david was quite concerned about the
continuation of his throne and of his kingdom
kingdom
and in second samuel 7
god gave some marvelous promises to david
david
he says in verse 16 and thine house and
thy kingdom shall be established forever
before thee
thy throne shall be established forever
that's an amazing promise to make to a
man how could the throne of david a mere
man be established forever how could his
kingdom be established forever
in second samuel 7 verses 18 to 29
david just worshipped god he he said how
can you say this to me you've spoken of
your servant's house for a great while
to come you're doing these great things
verse 22 wherefore thou art great that
sort of sounds like the angel's message
doesn't it let thy name be magnified
according to verse 26. that sounds like
mary's song my souldeth magnify the lord
when you read second samuel 7 you find
that god had some special plans
for david number one
from his loins would come the messiah
god would use david's family to bring
his very son into the world
peter preached this in acts chapter 2
didn't he
he is at the right hand of god he's
exalted speaking of our lord jesus for
david is not ascended into the heavens
but he saith himself the lord said unto
my lord sit thou on my right hand
until i make thy foes thy footstool you
see david was dead and buried but god
had promised to david verse 30 now of
acts chapter 2 god had promised to david
that of the fruit of his loins according
to the flesh he would raise up christ to
sit on his throne
today the lord jesus christ is enthroned
in heaven now david's throne was never
in heaven but that's where our lord
jesus christ is today
and one day he will take the throne of
his father david and one day he shall
reign over the people of israel
and one day he shall establish his
eternal kingdom and of his kingdom there
shall be no end and he shall reign for
ever and ever
those beautiful words that handle set to
music king of kings and lord of lords
and he shall reign forever and ever you
know it's no wonder that the angel said
to mary fear not
how can we be afraid when jesus christ
is the savior
he forgives our sins he died for our
sins he arose again there's no need to
be afraid if jesus is your savior
how can we be afraid when we know he is
great the son of the highest is there
anything too hard for the lord
if you know jesus christ as your savior
then you are sharing the life of the
great one he shall be great oh you say
pastor wears me my problems are so great
yes but he is great
the burdens i carry are great ah but he
is great how can we be afraid when we
know that he is the savior when we know
that he is great and he is the king
he is reigning today
in heaven and one day he shall reign in
his kingdom and we shall reign with him
now you and i belong to the king i
belong to the king i'm a child of his love
love
and when you belong to the king you
don't have to be afraid this is the good news
news
fear not jesus christ is the savior fear not
not
he is great and the son of the highest
fear not
he is the king
o gracious father help us today to
realize we don't have to be afraid
thank you for all that jesus christ is
to us
we pray in his name amen
thank you for listening to back to the bible
