[Music]
you have your bible open now to luke
chapter 2. let's pause to pray
gracious father
sometimes these words can become very
familiar to us and we not really learn
the lessons that are there and claim the
blessings that are there and so give us
a new eyes to see and and
the spirit of god working in our hearts
that we might learn from your word and
be encouraged
help all who listen father and may the
word of god do us all good today i pray
in jesus name amen
amen
we have been sharing with mary the first
three months of her miracle experience
we have seen mary submitting in luke
chapter 1 verses 26 through 38 where she
presents herself to god
and then we saw mary singing in verses 39-56
39-56
where she is praising the lord
now it is six months later
and mary is going to give birth to the
lord jesus christ mary travels to
bethlehem with joseph the baby is born
the angels visit the shepherds in the
judean fields and the shepherds visit
mary and joseph and find the son of god
a baby
lying in a feeding trough
because there was no room in the inn now
what is mary doing is all of these
momentous events take place well luke 2
19 tells us
but mary kept all these things and
pondered them in her heart
we have a similar statement in verse 51
and he went down with them and came to
nazareth and was subject unto them but
his mother kept all these sayings in her
heart mary was a woman with a pure heart
because she had trusted the savior my
spirit rejoices in god my savior
and she was a woman with a praising
heart we've heard her song of praise as
she adored the lord and magnified him
but she was also a woman with a
pondering heart
she did not let these things slip from her
her
in fact luke 2 19 the word kept means
guarded she guarded all these things and
she pondered them the greek word
translated pondered means to put
together she's putting things together
and she's asking herself now what is god
going to do
mary is a woman with a pondering heart
a searching heart she's gone from
submitting to singing
to searching
as we look at luke's account in luke
chapter 2 we can easily discover the
matters that mary would notice and she
would ponder in her heart there are at
least five of them and i'd like us to
begin to look at them today certainly
she would be pondering the times in
which she was living luke chapter 2
verses 1 through 3.
and it came to pass in those days that
there went out a decree from caesar
augustus that all the world should be
registered or taxed
and this registration was first made
when quirinius was governor of syria
and all went to be registered everyone
to his own city
we are living in the times of the
gentiles you see rome is in control
there's no longer a jewish king on the
throne who can claim to go back to david
there is no longer the
rule of god through his people israel
it's the times of the gentiles augustus
caesar ruled from 31 bc
until 14 a.d
he made a decree that there should be a
census and the purpose of the census of
course was to raise money to see how
many people there were so they could tax them
them
and once again we see how that god's
people israel have gone very low in
their national character and in their
national existence
they're being taxed by the gentiles
they're being ruled by the gentiles but
the interesting thing is this
long before augustus caesar made his
decree god had made a decree
mary's pondering here is the great
augustus caesar who has made a decree
and she is a part of it why because
behind that decree was the decree of god
god had decreed
that his son would be born in bethlehem
of judea when the fullness of the times
was come god sent forth his son
you see back in genesis chapter 3 verse 15
15
god had decreed that the savior would
come not as an angel but as a human being
being
and i will put enmity between thee
that's the serpent and the woman
and between thy seed and her seed
it shall bruise thy head and thou shalt
bruise his heel now this is the promise
that the savior would come through the
woman genesis 3 15 god had decreed that
god had also decreed that the savior
would be a jew
in genesis chapter 12 god said to
abraham get thee out of thy country and
i will make of thee a great nation
and i will make thy name great and thou
shalt be a blessing
and in thee shall all families of the
earth be blessed in other words the
savior is going to come as a human being
who will be a jew
but you see there were 12 tribes to
israel now which tribe is going to give
birth to the messiah well we're told in
genesis 49 verse 10 it would be judah
the scepter shall not depart from judah
nor a lawgiver from between his feet
until shiloh come the rest bringer and
unto him shall the gathering of the
people be he would be born through the
tribe of judah
but there were many families in judah
which family would it be
well god told david in 2nd samuel
chapter 7
that his family would be the family that
would give birth to the messiah and
david was just overwhelmed when god said
i'm going to build a house for you and
i'm going to give you a kingdom that
shall be established forever and this is
what the angel had said to mary you'll remember
remember
the lord god shall give unto him the
throne of his father david
luke chapter 1 verse 32 and so he's
going to be a human being
coming as a jew in the tribe of judah
through the family of david how is he
going to come
well isaiah chapter 7 verse 14 tells us
this therefore the lord himself shall
give you a sign
behold a virgin shall conceive and bear
a son
and shall call his name emmanuel god
with us the virgin birth of the lord
jesus christ i'm sure that mary was
pondering that prophecy as she was going
through this amazing experience
according to the word of god god had
decreed how his son would be born where
his son would be born when his son would
be born and you see god's decrees always
are fulfilled
we look around today and we see a great
deal of political action going on
nation rising against nation and kingdom
against kingdom and we have the united
nations and we have nato and we have all
these alliances i want you to know that
behind all of these things god rules and overrules
overrules
and caesar augustus had no idea he was
fulfilling the very prophecies of god
when he issued that decree
it does is good to ponder the times and
to realize that god's word is
controlling history i think it was john
newton who said that he read the
newspaper to see how god was governing
his world
i think secondly that
mary would certainly ponder not only the
times but the place bethlehem
verses four and five of luke chapter two
and joseph also went up from galilee out
of the city of nazareth into judea under
the city of david which is called
bethlehem because he was of the house
and lineage of david
to be registered with mary his espoused
wife being great with child bethlehem
now the name bethlehem means house of
bread now mary would ponder that
because our lord jesus christ would grow
up and one day he would say i am the
bread of god come down from heaven
i'm the bread of life if you eat of me
you'll never hunger you'll never thirst
the bread that i'm giving to you will
satisfy you he was born in bethlehem the
house of bread bethlehem judah the name
judah means praise now there wasn't much
praise going on in judah
the people of israel were not really
bringing much glory and praise to god
but jesus would come and he would bring
praise to the father through his life
his death his resurrection
and so they came to bethlehem the house
of bread i wonder if mary didn't ponder
some of the history of bethlehem
you see bethlehem is a place of weeping
back in genesis chapter 35
we find that rachel died giving birth to
benjamin it was a place of weeping she
was buried there
near bethlehem and
and
bethlehem was thought of by the jews for
many years as a place of weeping this is
where rachel died
she gave birth to that little boy and
and she was in such pain and agony she
called him son of my sorrow
but jacob changed his name
to son of my right hand even that's a
picture of our lord jesus christ
because he is the man of sorrows and he
is the son at god's right hand bethlehem
for centuries was a place of weeping
because of rachel and then ruth came along
along
and when you think of bethlehem you
think of a wedding
ruth that outsider who came to bethlehem
with naomi and she was married to boaz
and became the ancestress of david and
of the lord jesus christ and so through
rachel we find that bethlehem is a place
of weeping but from ruth we discover
that bethlehem can also be a place for a
wedding for the birth of a little baby
who in time became the ancestor of the
lord jesus christ of course you couldn't
think about bethlehem without thinking
about david it is the city of david
and bethlehem is connected with david
the great warrior and when you think of
bethlehem you think of victory you think
of david going out and slaying goliath
you think of david the great conqueror
who really established the kingdom
but now the lord jesus is going to be
born at bethlehem
if you were to walk down the street in
your community and stop people and say
i'm going to say a word to you and what
do you think of when you hear this word bethlehem
bethlehem
i think they would automatically say by
the birth of the lord jesus christ
very few would say rachel wept and died
at bethlehem very few would say ruth was
married at bethlehem or even that david
the great conqueror came from bethlehem
our lord jesus has taken this place of
weeping and turned it into a place of
rejoicing this is what micah wrote micah
chapter 5
and verse 2
but thou bethlehem ephrata which means fruitful
fruitful
though thou be little among the
thousands of judah
yet out of thee shall he come forth unto
me that is to be ruler in israel whose
goings forth have been
from of old from everlasting or from
eternity the days of eternity here is
eternal god stepping into history at
bethlehem and i'm sure that
mary must have pondered these things in
her heart well let's move on i thought
we'd only get to verse 5 but let's take
verses 6 and 7 now
and so it was that while they were there
the days were accomplished that she
should be delivered
and she brought forth her first born son
and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and
laid him in a manger because there was
no room for them in the inn
what a miracle this was the divine son
of god comes as a human baby the the
creator comes and yet he's going to grow up
up
it's an amazing thing babies are born to
live this baby was born to die
and she brought forth her first born son
this would suggest that mary had other children
children
and mark chapter 6 verse 3 would bear
this out but you see the word firstborn
means the preeminent one
the firstborn was the son of eminence
the son who had the honor
and jesus christ is indeed the firstborn
the highest of all colossians 1 15 calls
him the firstborn of all creation he's
the highest thing in creation because
he's the creator
all things were made by him and for him
and through him all things hold together
we're told in colossians he himself is
not a creature who was created by god he
is the creator the highest in all of creation
creation
colossians 1 18 calls him the firstborn
from the dead he's the highest of all
who ever were raised from the dead
because he raised himself in glory and
he has taken that glorified body back to
heaven today
romans 8 29 tells us he's the firstborn
among many brethren that means someday
we're going to share what he is we shall
be like him
for we shall see him as he is
people over the years have blamed that innkeeper
innkeeper
but we shouldn't blame him it was a
crowded little city there was no place
for them to stay in the inn this was
just simply a place where people brought
their animals and their family and they
were living there in sort of an open
courtyard surrounded by a wall you must
not think of a motel or a hotel
when you go to bethlehem they'll show
you a cave and they say jesus was born
in this cave
we really don't know it's possible he
was born in a stable somewhere we do
know that they took the baby jesus
wrapped him in these bands of cloth
almost like a burial and they laid him
in a feeding trough because there was no
room for them in the end our lord was
not thrown out he was crowded out and
that so often happens today
mary pondered this the birth of the son
of god
what an amazing thing
that jesus christ the son of god should come
come
and become poor
and be laid in an ordinary feeding
trough surrounded by animals
that he might save you and me from our
sins we ought to bow in worship we ought
to bow in praise and thanksgiving for
