if you've just been told that you have
ADHD that can kind of be a lot to
process especially if you've known other
kids with ADHD and feel like their
challenges are way different than what's
going on with you and it's true ADHD can
show up in so many ways
ADHD stands for attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder and what it means
is that you're struggling with certain
areas of focusing keeping yourself on
track switching from one task to the
next one needed and completing things
some kids and teenagers also have the
hyperactivity piece but not all and that
means that you tend to have more energy
or be a bit more Restless than other
people you might move around more or
need more background noise to help
yourself focus on something the good
news about ADHD is that it's been
studied now for nearly a hundred years
and we know a lot about how it works and
we're learning more and more about ways
to help people with ADHD Thrive so
importantly by calling this ADHD giving
it a name we help other people
understand what's happening for you and
support you so that attention doesn't
become come a barrier in situations like
school or activities or even at home
so part of the treatment for ADHD is
helping the adults in your life support
you in the most effective and positive
way there are also strategies that you
can start to learn to help yourself with
tasks that are boring or really hard to
get motivated around strategies like
using timers and reminders creating
lists to prioritize things breaking down
big tasks into chunks so that they're
less overwhelming and you can get them
done more efficiently many kids and
teenagers and even adults with ADHD also
find medication to be helpful it can
make a really big difference in helping
your brain focus in on things and stay
interested in things that you would
otherwise find more boring so that might
be something to talk with your doctor
about whatever the case know that you're
in good company about 10 percent of
people probably a little bit more have
ADHD so it's super common and there are
a lot of strengths that come with ADHD
you may notice there's some really fun
aspects of your personality or there's
certain areas that you can hyper focus
on and be really creative and successful with
with
but unfortunately our school system and
our society in general was not set up
taking into account ADHD
school for example requires a lot of
sitting still focusing in on things so
we want to give you the most tools
possible to thrive in those settings
while also finding settings that are
personalized more to you where you can
