0:02 welcome to our from oklahoma city to 911
0:04 lecture as you can probably tell from
0:05 the title of this one it's going to be a
0:07 bit heavier than our normal lecture so
0:08 just prep yourself for that ahead of time
0:09 time
0:10 we'll be talking about who attacked the
0:12 murrah federal building in oklahoma city
0:13 and why
0:16 who decided the 2000 election and who
0:19 attacked the united states on 9 11.
0:21 the branch davidians were an offshoot of
0:23 seventh-day adventists founded in the
0:25 1930s and they did not believe that
0:27 christ was the messiah
0:29 so david koresh became associated with
0:31 the group in the early 1980s and he
0:32 later gained a leadership role in the group
0:33 group
0:34 he began to preach that he was the
0:36 messiah and that any children of the
0:38 messiah were sacred and that was his
0:40 logic for having multiple marriages with
0:42 women and underage girls that produced
0:44 13 children later multiple branch
0:46 davidian children also reported that
0:48 koresh had molested them but most of
0:51 this sexual abuse was unknown in 1993.
0:53 instead the fbi became interested in the
0:55 group after receiving tips about a potential
0:56 potential
0:59 illegal arms cash and a very large one
1:00 at that
1:03 on february 28 1993 the bureau of
1:06 alcohol tobacco and firearms or the atf
1:08 tried to execute a search warrant to
1:10 find the illegal weapons
1:12 a gun battle broke out which both sides
1:13 accused the other of starting
1:16 and five branch davidians and five atf
1:18 agents died that day
1:20 the fbi negotiators spent six weeks
1:22 waiting for the davidians and their
1:24 final underage hostages to exit the
1:25 well-armed compound
1:27 during which they negotiated with koresh
1:28 for more than 60
1:32 hours 21 children and 14 adults exited
1:34 the compound in that six week time span
1:38 on april 19 1993 agents finally breached
1:39 the building and a
1:41 massive fire broke out most likely set
1:43 by the davidians themselves
1:46 76 of the remaining 85 davidians in the
1:48 building died in the fire including 20
1:49 children most of whom were related to koresh
1:51 koresh
1:53 most americans thought this so-called
1:55 cult had brought this end on themselves
1:57 president clinton argued quote i do not
1:58 think the united states government is
2:00 responsible for the fact that a bunch of
2:02 religious fanatics decided to kill themselves
2:03 themselves
2:06 but some on the political very far right
2:09 saw waco as an example of unlawful
2:10 government overreach
2:12 and the consequences of federal
2:14 aggression white supremacists
2:16 rallied around waco and an earlier
2:18 incident known as ruby ridge where
2:20 federal officers attempted to arrest a
2:22 white separatist named randy
2:24 weaver on illegal weapons charges but
2:26 they ended up in an 11 day standoff
2:28 between weaver's family and federal agents
2:28 agents
2:30 in which weaver's wife and one agent died
2:32 died
2:33 white supremacist and the far right
2:36 anti-government pro-gun patriot
2:38 movement used waco and ruby ridge as a
2:40 rallying cry for those who saw the
2:41 federal government
2:43 as a threat and as an excuse to arm
2:45 themselves in violation of the nation's
2:47 already lacks gun laws
2:49 mike vanderbo a prominent patriot
2:50 movement figure argued quote
2:52 waco can happen at any given time but
2:54 the outcome will be different this time
2:57 of that i can assure you this patriot
2:59 movement included u.s army veteran
3:00 timothy mcveigh
3:02 who went on to carry out the oklahoma
3:05 city bombing on the anniversary
3:07 of the waco raid so you're going to
3:09 proceed to the next clip in the lecture
3:10 to see mcveigh
3:13 at the site of the waco siege and some
3:15 of his political ideology which will
3:17 then motivate his actions at oklahoma city
