welcome to our from oklahoma city to 911
lecture as you can probably tell from
the title of this one it's going to be a
bit heavier than our normal lecture so
just prep yourself for that ahead of time
time
we'll be talking about who attacked the
murrah federal building in oklahoma city
and why
who decided the 2000 election and who
attacked the united states on 9 11.
the branch davidians were an offshoot of
seventh-day adventists founded in the
1930s and they did not believe that
christ was the messiah
so david koresh became associated with
the group in the early 1980s and he
later gained a leadership role in the group
group
he began to preach that he was the
messiah and that any children of the
messiah were sacred and that was his
logic for having multiple marriages with
women and underage girls that produced
13 children later multiple branch
davidian children also reported that
koresh had molested them but most of
this sexual abuse was unknown in 1993.
instead the fbi became interested in the
group after receiving tips about a potential
potential
illegal arms cash and a very large one
at that
on february 28 1993 the bureau of
alcohol tobacco and firearms or the atf
tried to execute a search warrant to
find the illegal weapons
a gun battle broke out which both sides
accused the other of starting
and five branch davidians and five atf
agents died that day
the fbi negotiators spent six weeks
waiting for the davidians and their
final underage hostages to exit the
well-armed compound
during which they negotiated with koresh
for more than 60
hours 21 children and 14 adults exited
the compound in that six week time span
on april 19 1993 agents finally breached
the building and a
massive fire broke out most likely set
by the davidians themselves
76 of the remaining 85 davidians in the
building died in the fire including 20
children most of whom were related to koresh
koresh
most americans thought this so-called
cult had brought this end on themselves
president clinton argued quote i do not
think the united states government is
responsible for the fact that a bunch of
religious fanatics decided to kill themselves
themselves
but some on the political very far right
saw waco as an example of unlawful
government overreach
and the consequences of federal
aggression white supremacists
rallied around waco and an earlier
incident known as ruby ridge where
federal officers attempted to arrest a
white separatist named randy
weaver on illegal weapons charges but
they ended up in an 11 day standoff
between weaver's family and federal agents
agents
in which weaver's wife and one agent died
died
white supremacist and the far right
anti-government pro-gun patriot
movement used waco and ruby ridge as a
rallying cry for those who saw the
federal government
as a threat and as an excuse to arm
themselves in violation of the nation's
already lacks gun laws
mike vanderbo a prominent patriot
movement figure argued quote
waco can happen at any given time but
the outcome will be different this time
of that i can assure you this patriot
movement included u.s army veteran
timothy mcveigh
who went on to carry out the oklahoma
city bombing on the anniversary
of the waco raid so you're going to
proceed to the next clip in the lecture
to see mcveigh
at the site of the waco siege and some
of his political ideology which will
then motivate his actions at oklahoma city
