This content explains the theological significance of four events in Jesus' early life—circumcision, naming, presentation to the Lord, and his mother's purification—as described in Luke Chapter 2 and Leviticus Chapter 12, highlighting Jesus' obedience to the law and his redemptive work for humanity.
[Music]
let's read the word of god beginning at
verse 21 of luke chapter 2.
and when eight days were accomplished
for the circumcising of the child his
name was called jesus who was so named
by the angel before he was conceived in
the womb
and when the days of her purification
according to the law of moses were
accomplished they brought him to
jerusalem to present him to the lord as
it is written in the law of the lord
every male that openeth the womb shall
be called holy to the lord
and to offer a sacrifice according to
that which is said in the law of the lord
lord
a pair of turtle doves
or two young pigeons
now father as we open your word we do
need the guidance of your holy spirit
not only to understand it
but to receive it
to receive it into our hearts and then
to put it into practice so nourish us
from the word
and may we not just study the bible may
we instead see the lord jesus christ and
love him more and worship him more
i pray in jesus name amen
amen
now the background of this
series of events
is given to us in leviticus chapter 12 i
think we'd better turn there
leviticus chapter 12.
in those eight verses we are told what
the mother is supposed to do after she
gives birth to a child
leviticus chapter 12
and the lord spoke unto moses saying
speak unto the children of israel saying
if a woman have conceived seed and born
a male child
then she shall be unclean seven days
according to the days of the separation
for her infirmity shall she be unclean
and in the eighth day the flesh of his
foreskin shall be circumcised
and she shall then continue in the blood
of her purifying three and thirty days
she shall touch no hallowed thing nor
come into the sanctuary until the days
of her purification be fulfilled
verse six and when the days of her
purifying are fulfilled for a son or for
a daughter she shall bring a lamb of the
first year for a burnt offering and a
young pigeon or a turtle dove for a sin
offering unto the door of the tabernacle
of the congregation unto the priest who
shall offer it before the lord and make
an atonement for her
and she shall be cleansed from the issue
of her blood this is the law for her
that hath born a male or a female
and if she be not able to bring a lamb
then she shall bring two turtle doves or
two young pigeons the one for the burnt
offering and the other for a sin
offering and the priest shall make an
atonement for her and she shall be cleaned
cleaned
there are four important events that are
recorded in luke chapter 2 in connection
with this passage from leviticus chapter 12.
12.
the lord jesus was circumcised he was
named he was presented to the lord and
his mother was purified
now these events are important not only
to the lord jesus and to gospel history
but they are important to us today
because they tell us what the lord jesus
christ has done for us
they remind us of the price that he paid
that we might have the joy of salvation
these events are not past history they
are present reality if you know the lord
jesus christ as your savior
event number one our lord jesus on the
eighth day was circumcised
now this meant he became a son of the
law he became a child of the covenant
in fact five times in luke chapter 2
you're going to find this word law verse
22 the law of moses
verse 23 the law of the lord
verse 24 the law of the lord
up in verse 27 after the custom of the law
law
in verse 39 according to the law of the
lord the lord jesus christ
was made under the law
now circumcision began
with abraham in genesis chapter 17.
the mark on the body was the indication
that the person was a child of the
covenant he belonged to the covenant of
god it was one of god's covenant people
now it's unfortunate that this uh
right of circumcision degenerated
into something it was never meant to be
in deuteronomy chapter 10
verse 16 moses pointed out that
circumcision was not something external
it was internal deuteronomy 10 16
circumcise there for the foreskin of
your heart
and be no more stiff-necked for the lord
your god is god of gods and lord of
lords a great god a mighty and a
terrible which regardeth not persons nor
taketh reward their circumcision
externally was to be an indication of an
internal change of heart
paul had the same thing to say in romans
chapter 2
and in verse 28
romans chapter 2 and verse 28
for he is not a jew which is one outwardly
outwardly
neither is that circumcision which is
outward in the flesh but he is a jew
which is one inwardly
and circumcision is that of the heart in
the spirit
and not in the letter whose praise is
not of men but of god
and so even the old testament
taught that this ritual was a sign of
something spiritual that should take
place within by the way people make that
same mistake today don't they
i've witnessed the people and i've said
well now do you know jesus is your
savior do you know you're going to
heaven oh i've been baptized well that
doesn't save us or i went to the
eucharist or i participated in the
communion well that's not what saves us
these things are outward evidences of an
inward faith an inward change
and it's unfortunate that these internal
and eternal realities are replaced by
external formalities
now the lord jesus was made under the
law galatians 4 4 tells us that made
under the law when he came into this
world as a little baby
he identified with the covenant and with
the law of moses he perfectly obeyed the
law when he was here on earth nobody
ever could accuse him of breaking the law
law
in fact when they indicted him at that
so-called trial they had to hire false
witnesses to bring a charge against him
not only was he made under the law but
he was under the curse of the law in
galatians chapter 3 and verse 13
paul tells us that the law involves a curse
curse
galatians chapter 3 and verse 13.
christ hath redeemed us from the curse
of the law
being made a curse for us for it is
written cursed is everyone that hangeth
on a tree did you get that
when the lord jesus christ identified
himself with the law
when his first blood was shed eight days
after he was born
he was saying to the world one day i
will bear the curse of this law
and i will be hanged on a tree
our lord jesus was circumcised he was
made a curse for us
he bore the curse of the law that we
might be set free oh how our hearts
ought to be lifted in praise and
adoration for what jesus did for us
secondly the lord jesus was named
and when eight days were accomplished
for the circumcising of the child his
name was called jesus
and of course this was a very special
name because he was named by the angel
before he was even conceived in mary's
womb it's interesting to note the people
in the bible who were named before they
were conceived it's an interesting study
i recommend it to you isaac was named
and so was ishmael and there are several
others in the word of god the angel came
and told mary that you shall call his
name jesus
we find that in luke chapter 1 verse 31
thou shalt call his name jesus and then
when joseph was told about this miracle
the angel said to him
thou shalt call his name jesus for he
shall save his people from their sins he
was circumcised and made a child of the
covenant under the law he was made a
curse for us he was named jesus he was
made sin for us
in order to bear that name he had to go
to the cross and die made sin for you
and me
just take all of the sin you read about
in the paper all the sin
you see
announced on television all the
wickedness in this world and imagine
what it would be like to place that on
the lord jesus but he did it
call his name jesus he's the savior he
is the one who has died for us and like
joshua of the old testament that's what
the name jesus is jehoshaphat
jehovah is salvation
like joshua in the old testament jesus
has conquered and claimed the
inheritance for us
now the third event is given here he was
presented to the lord verse 22 to
present him to the lord this goes back
to exodus chapter 13.
when the first born in egypt were
delivered by the blood of the lamb god
said those firstborn belong to me
i'm not going to make them work for me
rather the levites are going to take
their place and so the levites took the
place of the firstborn in serving the
lord but said the lord
every firstborn of the cattle the flocks
the herds and every firstborn
of your family must be redeemed
and so they brought the lord jesus who
was the firstborn
and they had to redeem him down at the
temple you know how they did that they
brought five shekels
and they gave those five shekels in the
temple court and that redeemed the lord
jesus christ imagine now the law giver
put himself under the law
the sinless one was made sin
and the redeemer was redeemed this is an
amazing thing
now we know from our own study of the
word of god that we are not redeemed by
silver and gold in fact peter said that
didn't he let me read it to you first
peter chapter 1
and beginning at verse 18
for as much as you know that you were
not redeemed with corruptable things
with silver and gold from your vain conversation
conversation
but with the precious blood of christ as
of a lamb without blemish and without spot
spot
he was presented to the lord and they
brought the five shekels and they
redeemed him
he's our redeemer today and he shed his
blood to do that
the third event
mary was purified verse 22 and when the
days of her purification according to
the law of moses were accomplished this
meant that she had to wait 40 days after
the birth of the lord jesus
seven days
first of all and then 33 days
and then of course she was able to come
into the temple and to bring her sacrifice
sacrifice
now the mother was considered unclean
not because marriage is unclean not
because sex is unclean not because the
birth of a child is unclean but the
mother was considered unclean because in
the birth of the baby various bodily
fluids were released and of course
according to the old covenant law these
fluids brought uncleanness to her
also something else is involved it's a
good reminder to us
that all of us are conceived in sin even
david said that didn't he in psalm 51
verse 5 that he was conceived in sin and
it's just a reminder in leviticus
chapter 12 that even when a precious
little baby is born that baby is born a sinner
sinner
and so the mother has to come now to be
purified of her ceremonial uncleanness
let me make it very clear again that god
is not saying that birth is unclean or
that sex is unclean or marriage is unclean
unclean
he is simply saying because of the birth
process the mother now has to be made
clean well what did she do she brought
two sacrifices a burnt offering and a
sin offering the bird offering speaks of
total dedication to god the sin offering
of course speaks of atonement our sins
being cared for by the blood of the sacrifice
sacrifice
now we're told in leviticus chapter 12
that the mother is supposed to bring a lamb
lamb
and if she cannot bring a lamb she can
bring two turtle doves or two young
pigeons and of course that is what mary
and joseph brought verse 24 of luke
chapter 2 and to offer a sacrifice
according to that which is said in the
law of the lord a pair of turtle doves
or two young pigeons now follow our
reasoning he was circumcised made a
curse for us under the law
he was named jesus made sin for us
he was presented to the lord
he is our redeemer who has redeemed us
and mary was purified and the sacrifice
she brought was the poorest of the
sacrifices he was made poor for us
ii corinthians 8 9 for you know the
grace of our lord jesus christ that
though he was rich yet for your sakes he
became poor
that you through his poverty might be
rich here is the creator of the universe
the king of kings
and his parents are so poor they have to
bring the least expensive sacrifice he
was made a curse for you he was made sin
for you
he was made poor for you and yet he paid
the price
for your redemption
oh come
let us adore him
jesus christ
thank you for listening to back to the bible
