you've been accused of a crime you did
not commit
it's impossible to prove your
innocence if you insist that you're
innocent anyway you might be found
guilty and sentenced to
death but if you confess apologize and
blame others You'll Go
free do you give a false confession or
risk being publicly
hanged this was the choice faced by
those accused of Witchcraft in Salem
Massachusetts between February 1692 and
May 16
93 they were victims of fear about the
supernatural religious fanaticism and a
justice system that cared more about
apologies than the
truth Salem was founded in 1626 by
Puritans a strict group of English
Protestants life in Salem was hard and
isolated there were frequent battles
with Native American neighbors and
French
settlers people feared starvation and
disease and Rel relations between
villagers were
strained in 1692 one of the coldest
winters on record made things
worse during that winter two cousins
99-year-old Betty Paris and 11-year-old
Abigail Williams started acting very
strangely a doctor couldn't find
anything physically wrong with them and
said that they were under the influence
of evil
forces Puritans belied that the devil
caused trouble in the world through
human agents or witches who ruined crops
conjured evil apparitions and tormented
children as news spread more girls
started showing similar Strange
Behaviors reports said 12 Afflicted
girls twisted their bodies had fits and
complained about feeling prickles on
their
skin soon four of the girls accused
three local women of attacking them
these women were Outsiders in some way
on February 29th the authorities
arrested Sarah good a poor pregnant
mother with a young daughter Sarah
Osborne who had not attended church in a
long time and tiaba an enslaved woman in
the Paris
household Tiba first denied hurting the
girls but later confessed to practicing
Witchcraft and blamed good and Osborne
for forcing her to do it Osborne and
good both maintained their innocence
Osborne died in prison while Good's
husband turned against her in court
testifying that she was a witch or would
soon become one Good's 5-year-old
daughter was also imprisoned and
testified against her own
mother meanwhile good gave birth in jail
her baby died and she was convicted and
hanged shortly
after Tiba was held in custody until May
and then
released these were just the first
victims
as accusations multiplied others like
Tiba gave false confessions to save
themselves the authorities even told one
accused woman that she would be hanged
if she did not confess but set free if
she did they were not interested in
carefully checking the
accusations the church preferred people
to confess ask for forgiveness and
promised to stop practicing
witchcraft the court accepted all kinds
of dubious evidence including so-called
spectral evidence where the girls
claimed they were being attacked by
invisible
ghosts complicating matters further many
of the jurors in the trials were
relatives of the accusers which made it
hard for them to be
fair those who dared to speak out like
judge Nathaniel Sultan stall came under
suspicion by the spring of 1693 over 100
people had been imprisoned and 14 women
and six men men had been
executed by then the accusations were
spreading to other towns and even
important people were being
accused when the wife of the governor of
Massachusetts was accused he stopped the
trials prisoners were released sentences
were changed and no more arrests were
made some believe the girls may have
been hallucinating because of a fungus
or a condition caused by brain
swelling but no one knows for sure what
caused their behavior
what we do know is that adults accepted
wild claims from children as solid
evidence today the Salem Witch Trials
are remembered as a warning of how
dangerous group think and scapegoating
can be and how easily fear can
manipulate people's
beliefs you've been accused of a crime
