apologize and blame others You'll Go free do you give a false confession or risk being publicly hanged this was the choice faced by those accused of Witchcraft in Salem Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 16 93 they were victims of fear about the supernatural religious fanaticism and a justice system that cared more about apologies than the truth Salem was founded in 1626 by Puritans a strict group of English Protestants life in Salem was hard and isolated there were frequent battles with Native American neighbors and French settlers people feared starvation and disease and Rel relations between villagers were strained in 1692 one of the coldest winters on record made things worse during that winter two cousins 99-year-old Betty Paris and 11-year-old Abigail Williams started acting very strangely a doctor couldn't find anything physically wrong with them and said that they were under the influence of evil forces Puritans belied that the devil caused trouble in the world through human agents or witches who ruined crops conjured evil apparitions and tormented children as news spread more girls started showing similar Strange Behaviors reports said 12 Afflicted girls twisted their bodies had fits and complained about feeling prickles on their skin soon four of the girls accused three local women of attacking them these women were Outsiders in some way on February 29th the authorities arrested Sarah good a poor pregnant mother with a young daughter Sarah Osborne who had not attended church in a long time and tiaba an enslaved woman in the Paris household Tiba first denied hurting the girls but later confessed to practicing Witchcraft and blamed good and Osborne for forcing her to do it Osborne and good both maintained their innocence Osborne died in prison
